SQL Always On for FIM

I wasn't able to find any information regarding the support of SQL Always On
Does FIM support SQL Always On? If not what should I use? Cluster? Mirroring?
The data above this text is pseudorandom, brace yourselves.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/27dde96a-5305-446c-a3e8-edc2e617c55c/sql-2012-always-on-availability-groups?forum=ilm2
As Peter says: clustering is supported, mirroring is not, always on database availability groups are not, log shipping is not. Automatic failover with mirroring or database availability groups will not work. Mirroring itself works, just not the failover.
Albeit you have a big performance hit even in asynchronous mode. Ditto for Availability groups. Log Shipping works, but you do have to pay attention to the management of the log. Again, Mirroring, Availability Groups and Log Shipping are not supported by Microsoft
FIM Product group but they will work to the extent described and with the caveats described. So think carefully on what you want to do, being in an unsupported position isn't fun. Clustering can accomplish the goal of high availability. If I had to pick one
for providing DR in case of site failure I would pick log shipping. But again not supported and you must pay attention to your log management or you could suffer performance hits.

  • Are there benefits to adding crossover cable between two servers for DFS replication and SQL Always On?

I have two identical servers with 4 network interfaces each. The primary usage for two servers is hosting SQL Server instance with Always On high availability and dfs replication. Two network interfaces from each server will be used to connect to main network,
while for the other two (on each) I was thinking about using crossover cable to possibly provide shorter path for two servers to communicate.
Will there be any benefits to doing so, moreover, would teaming two crossover cable help more?
Edit: Below is the link to the article where I got the idea of moving DFS Replication traffic to crossover. I wasn't able to find any info whether same thing is applied to SQL Always On high availability.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to connect 2 servers by crossed cable(2 NICs).
Just as the blog suggested, directly connect the servers by crossed cable and configure corresponding route entries will improve efficiency.
If both servers have 2 NICs to connect, I recommend you to team the 2 NICs for bandwidth aggregation. NIC teaming is supported by Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, detailed information you may reference:

besides, for file servers, SMB Multichannel (a feature included with Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 and part of the SMB 3.0 protocol) will helpful for increasing the network performance and availability. Detailed information reference:

  • Lack of support for FIM database mirroring

The official line is that database mirroring is not a supported architecture for the FIM deployment. I am not proposing using this, however I'd like to understand 1) What the issues really would be with a mirrored database deployment, 2) Will support
ever be added for this, and will it come in the form of SQL AlwaysOn?
    Really appreciate help and input.
    Rgds,
    David

Database mirroring comes has two modes regarding transactions: synchronous or asynchronous.
Synchronous requires that the data be committed in both places before releasing the transaction. This has a big performance impact on the FIM Service database and to a lesser extent on the FIM Sync Database.
Asynchronous means that data isn't committed in both places at the same time, the mirror can fall behind and then in failover you could be behind. In order to have automatic failover with Mirroring you have to be able to modify the connection string to include
the failover partner or the client has to support getting that data at first logon. While you can modify the FIM database connection strings, it is not understood if FIM is using database clients that support mirroring. I believe it is. Even with asynchronous
you still have performance hit for copying every transaction to the mirror.
SQL Always On combines the best of mirroring and clustering to allow you to group databases together into an availability set, and then automatic failover the whole group to another server. It should be noted that Always On makes use of a similar underlying
mechanisms as mirroring to copy the data -- this is evident when you read that Always on also has an asynchronous and synchronous mode. You will most likely run into the same performance quandary.
Will the product group add support for it? My guess is that it depends on if they find a good way to address the performance issues.

  • Is Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.

All I want to know is if Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.
I have been planning and deploying my companies first Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2012 Always On cluster and Always On Availability Groups Multi-Subnet cluster and instances for SharePoint 2013, and I will be brutally honest, the documentation on either
the MSDN and TechNet leave alot to be desired. Continually finding links in the documentation will take me from a Windows 2012 reference to a page talking about Windows Server 2008 or R2, The differences of which there are so many when it comes to configurations,
settings, roles, services when working with SQL Server 2012. I have been confused, frustrated, screaming mad, with all the misdirection in this documentation.  The documentation takes me windows 2008 R2 which is different than 2012!
Tired and trying to pick myself up off the floor!

In general, DTC is not required for SQL 2012.  But, since you are asking specifically about SharePoint, it would be better to ask in a SharePoint forum.  They would be more likely to know those situations where FTC might be needed by SharePoint.

  • SharePoint 2013 and SQL Always On

How do I setup SharePoint with SQL Always On.
I have two servers SQL1 and SQL2.  I created Windows 2012 cluster and called it MyCluster.
I installed SQL Server 2012 SP1 on both servers. I created AlwaysOn group called MyAlwaysOn and added test database to sync between those two servers.
Now I have to install SharePoint 2013.  How do I specify the SQL server? Do I say that name is SQL1? Or MyCluster? Or MyAlwaysOn?
MyAlwaysOn does not have IP address or DNS record, so I do not think I can do it. So, is it SQL1 or MyCluster?
If it is SQL1, do I manualy add SharePoint databases to MyAlwaysOn group? How does it work? How will SharePoint know to switch to SQL2?
Anyone knows how to do it right?
    Thank you.
    Thank you. Eric.

    Create SharePoint Databases
    Prepare SQL Alias
We need to fool SharePoint into thinking the SQL server where we'll create the configuration database is called something else. That’s because when you create a farm, whatever destination server you use during the “create new farm” stage isn’t forgotten (to
simplify), so first thing’s first let’s create fake alias for our SQL “server” – “SP15” as it’s SharePoint 2013 that’ll use it (version 15). As far as SharePoint needs to know everything is going into a SQL box called 'SP15'.
Now assuming you don’t have SQL Server tools installed (which you shouldn’t if it’s on production!) you’ll need to use a tool called “cliconfg.exe” to create a SQL alias. Run it; click the “Alias” tab, and the Add button.
Add a name – SP15 for the alias name, but it can be anything - instead of referencing a server-name we’ll reference the name of the alias which will transparently redirect traffic to the alias destination instead.
And if you know Russian languages

Так как БД SharePoint в нашем случае будут расположены на удалённом экземпляре SQL Server 2012 SP1(CU9), перед началом установки SharePoint
можно установить пакет Microsoft SQL Server Native Client. Его можно загрузить например со страницы Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Native Client.
SQL Server Client Network Utility (%windir%\system32\cliconfg.exe)

  • Error Msg: SQL login failed for HOSTNAME? Upgrade task?

    Hi everybody,
Since some weeks we see an error message in all servers our SharePoint 2010 SP1 Farm, regulary every hour:
SQL database login for 'SharePoint_Config' on instance 'sqlsrv' failed.
Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.
    Login failed for user 'OURDOMAIN\SERVERNAME$'.
The interesting part is that the
server tries to connect to the SharePoint Config database, not a dedicated account, which is normally used for every SharePoint service.
What circumstances can lead to an access of a server?
Unfortunately I get no details of the service or application which is trying to access. The event log just states "SharePoint Foundation (Microsoft-SharePoint Products-SharePoint
Foundation)" , Task Category "Database". The user who raises the error is "SYSTEM".
In the ULS log I can find the Stack Trace below which indicates to an upgrade task. But why is the SYSTEM user trying an update? Normally we do an upgrade by running the Upgrade Wizard with an dedicated account. And only the SharePoint Administration
windows service runs as Local System.
And I never heard or read something like: Give Local System (so the server) access to the SharePoint Config database?!
    Thanks for your ideas :-)
    Benjamin

It  will  need to add user ‘NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE’
to your database  to get rid of this problem.
An asp.net application  is running under NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE account.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2806438/login-failed-for-user-domain-machinename
NETWORK SERVICE and LocalSystem will authenticate themselves always as the correpsonding account locally (builtin\network service and builtin\system) but both will authenticate as the machine account remotely.
If you see a failure like Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$' it means that a process running as NETWORK SERVICE or as LocalSystem has accessed a remote resource, has authenticated itself as the machine account and was denied authorization.
Typical example would be an ASP application running in an app pool set to use NETWORK SERVICE credential and connecting to a remote SQL Server: the app pool will authenticate as the
machine running the app pool, and is this machine account that needs to be granted access.
When access is denied to a machine account, then access must be granted to the machine account. If the server refuses to login 'DOMAIN\MACHINE$', then you must grant login rights to 'DOMAIN\MACHINE$' not to NETWORK SERVICE. Granting access to NETWORK SERVICE
would allow a local process running as NETWORK SERVICE to connect, not a remote one, since the remote one will authenticate as, you guessed, DOMAIN\MACHINE$.
If you expect the asp application to connect to the remote SQL Server as a SQL login and you get exceptions about DOMAIN\MACHINE$ it means you use Integrated Security in the connection string. If this is unexpected, it means you screwed up the connection
    strings you use.

  • JDBC, SQL-SELECT: Aliases for multiple columns?

    Folks;
using SQL, JDBC with MaxDB 7.6, I am used to doing something like
    SELECT A AS FOO_A, B AS FOO_B, C AS BAR_C FROM FOO, BAR WHERE ...
in order to make table columns have names sometimes more "meaningful" than in the actual database scheme. In a give environment, I will have to do a
    SELECT * FROM FOO,BAR WHERE ...
with the difficulty that FOO and BAR contain columns of the same name, yet they both contain too many columns to actually enumerate/alias each one of them manually. Playing around trying something like
SELECT FOO.* AS FOO_*, BAR.* AS BAR_* FROM FOO,BAR WHERE ...
of course didn't work, and browsing the web I found there is no "standard SQL" way of doing something like this. Using
    java.sql.ResultSet
    provides a
    getMetaData()
method which allows for determining the "table name" for a given column in the fetched result set, but unfortunately, the outcome returned by this method always seems to be empty. So to ask:
    - Is there any way in MaxDB-SQL to allow for "aliasing multiple columns"?
    - Alternatively, is there a way to make an SQL query joining multiple tables in MaxDB issued through JDBC generally return table columns in a <tablename>.<columnname> rather than just <columnname> style?
Thanks a bunch in advance, best regards.
    Kristian

    HI Kristian,
afaik the resultset.getMetaData() method should provide a MetaData-object that in turn implements methods like getColumnCount() or getColumnName() etc...
Can you provide a piece of code to demonstrate that this is not working?
I just tested DB Studio and Squirrel SQL (both use JDBC to connect to the database) and both are able to correctly figure out the structure of the result set for a query like yours.
Anyhow, the whole requirement is not supposed to be supported.
In fact, it's already a kind of 'glitch' that results with non-unique columnnames are actually produced, since relational theory forbids such results.
That's also the reason for why you cannot further work with such a resultset (e.g. use it in a join).
Therefore, no workaround in place here.
If you´re going to have a query like this rather often, you may think about using views and define the aliases there only once.
And besides all this, if you've got many duplicate column names it might also be a unlucky data design.
    best regards,
    Lars

  • Creating SQL-Loader script for more than one table at a time

    Hi,
I am using OMWB 2.0.2.0.0 with Oracle 8.1.7 and Sybase 11.9.
It looks like I can create SQL-Loader scripts for all the tables
or for one table at a time. If I want to create SQL-Loader
scripts for 5-6 tables, I have to either create script for all
the tables and then delete the unwanted tables or create the
scripts for one table at a time and then merge them.
Is there a simple way to create migration scripts for more than
one but not all tables at a time?
    Thanks,
    Prashant Rane

No there is no multi-select for creating SQL-Loader scripts.
You can either create them separately or create them all and
then discard the one you do not need.

When I go to update my software using the app store download, it always asks for the previous user's ID, not mine (my IT guy at school's-I am a faculty with admin priviledges).  I have signed in as me, have set the main preferences login user as me,and everywhere on the laptop I can use my apple ID except here.  It always shows me a greyed out ID of my IT.  How can I reset this to my ID? It doesn't give me an option to change the user ID, only a link to reset password.  I reset it, but it did not change the problem.  Can someone help me?

It's not an ID problem, it's an ownership problem.
When someone uses their personal Apple ID to buy and download content, the content is licensed to them and has their Apple ID engrained in it's DNA. It is an anti-piracy program. And when that personal Apple ID is used to setup a new Mac, it involves the Mac itself, the shipping OS and any pre-installed apps as well.
It's not the correct way to handle Macs that belong to a business or an institution. And had it been handled correctly they would not now be in this predictument needing a drastic remedy.

I do NOT like using my credit card if I don't have to, and I went out of my way to go buy an Apple gift card, which I successfully redeemed into my Apple account. However, when I use the Apple "Cards" app, it will not let me use anything other than my credit card. I tried purchasing a card, hopefulling it would come out of my Apple store balance, but no such luck -- it came out of my credit card.
Apple is becoming more like Microsoft every day.

  • CUPS: Printer always waits for more data, and finally times out.

I apologise if this should be categorised as" system administration" rather than "installation". The reason why I chose this category was that the error happened right after installing and setting up cups, so it should not have to do with fine-tuning or be the result of a particularly specific situation.
I have had a novel kind of problem with printing since I first installed Arch Linux:
Whenever I print - regardless of application -, my OKI 431 printer will always wait for more data after having completed the print job (as shown in its small display, where it keeps saying 'DATA' even after the last printed page has come out). After 25 to 30 seconds of such waiting, it will print out two pages, the first one empty, the second one saying:
    ERROR:
    timeout
    OFFENDING COMMAND:
    timeout
    STACK:
The printer display then goes back to saying 'ONLINE'. If I print several documents WITHIN this 25 to 30 sec delay, i.e. in fast succession, I only get the two pages once, i.e. after the last of these jobs has been printed.
What seems to be related to that is the status message on the "Printers" page of CUPS' Web interface: It says
Idle - "Sending data to printer."
all the time, even though I am not printing anything. (And this was the same before the update.)
Printing is otherwise completely fine - the one practical problem is I have an ever-growing pile of empty pages mixed with pages containing the above error message next to my printer, i.e. two extra pages after each printout. (The one workaround I have found so far is quickly switching off the printer after within the 25 - 30 secs time window.) I have tried to google this problem with various search term combinations, but have not been able to find pages specific to this problem anywhere.
What I have tried out was wiping the /etc/cups directory, updating cups, adding the printer again using lpadmin, and setting it as the default printer with lpoptions (both as explained in the Arch Wiki page). This has not changed anything relevant about the behaviour.
(The one effect this has had is that pointing some browsers (Opera, Dillo) to localhost:631 now gets a "Bad request" response from CUPS, but on most browsers (Mozilla, Qupzilla, Midori, Google Chrome, Lynx) it gets the normal Web interface. But this is probably not related to the problem.)
I will try to give some basic context:

It seems I have lost my first error_log, but I have produced a fresh one. It contains precisely what was logged since the reboot (albeit not the marker of when exactly I printed the document):

I always have trouble with my mailbox. It is always asking for my passwords but everything has been verified. How can I get it to stop doing it and start working????

There is only one thing that happens -- the Server does not respond.
Your mac concludes that you must have entered the wrong password. That may happen once, but then other issues become more likely, and it keeps asking for a new password.
Sometimes the Server is down for maintenance. Sometimes something is configured wrong. Some services do this on purpose to get you to use WebMail (pick up your Mail with your Browser) so they can show you some ads.
