SQL Compact 4 on Terminal Servers possible?

We want to use a SQL Server Compact 4 database for a local cached database.
We need this to work on Terminal Servers. It works fine but only for the first session which starts to use it. All newer session gets error messages like:
Error: There is a file sharing violation. A different process might be using the file.
We've tried all the available connection modes (like read or Shared Read) but nothing works. Does this sound familiair and is there a solution or good fast alternative?

Only the service has exclusive access to it.
If the database is open with "exclusive Access", then no other app can open the database file, even not for read-only.

  • InDesign CS6 or newer on terminal servers possible?

    Hi,
does anyone know, if it is possible to install InDesign CS6 or newer on a terminal server for a multi user environment and, if possible,
which license model would be appropriate for this?
    Best regards!

You'd have to contact Adobe Sales for your region, but I suspect the answer is no.

  • SQLite, Firebird or SQL compact

    Hi All,
I'm trying to replace an existing applications use of text and excel files for data storage with an embedded database model.  I've narrowed it down to 3:  Sqlite, Firebird, and Microsofts SQL Compact.
For simplicity i like sqlite, but i'd like some thread safety, and concurrency.
My biggest hang up in trying to finalize my decision, is that in the future i'll want to query another database (i.e query a customer's remote database to retrieve employee passwords) or allow another database to insert or query my tables to retrieve operational data.  My google-fu is strong, but I have yet to see examples or read documentation that specifically mentions whether this is possible.  What's the correct terminology?  I've seen discussions about linked databases (pros and cons), as well as cross database queries, but never a definitive "Yes, i did this... and it worked".  It could be so commonly done that noone mentions it, and i'm just retarded. :-/
If i adopt Firebird, will a customer with SQL Server just be able to use an odbc connection to interact with my database?  It's got to be a simple thing, i'm just missing it.
Please help me put this monkey to rest.

NI has a design pattern solution for SQLLite that even works on their CompactRIO RT controller hardware to use SQLLite from within LabVIEW. And http://www.ch-werner.de/sqliteodbc/ shows an ODBC driver for SQLLite. There are of course problems since the ODC driver contains the actual SQLLite engine and accesses the database file. So remote access through ODBC seems not trivial, though you could of course share the database file over the network and access it through an ODBC driver installed on a different computer. This probably still leaves the difficulty how to deal with concurrent access to the database file if your client tries to query the database file at the same time as your application has it open to write or query data from it.
Firebird also has an ODBC driver: http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=files&id=odbc. Firebird seems to either have a filebased access model that does allow concurrent access to the same database as well as a so called super server mode, where a service process controls access to the database file(s) and access is done through network communication to this service process. Not sure if the ODBC driver supports the super server mode transparently but if it does this would be a very easy solution to have your application use the database to store date and allow your clients to query the database from other computers directly.
Microsoft SQL Compact I'm not sure. If this is what was before the SQL Server Desktop Edition, then it is basically a full featured SQL Server installation with the database size limitation to 2GB. This would certainly work also with remote access through ODBC and/or ADO .Net. But if you have ODBC drivers for your database you can basically access it through ADO ActiveX or ADO .Net as well and it doesn't even have to be slower if the driver and interface are done well.

  • No Sound on virtual Windows 2008 R2 terminal servers

Hello. I have a hyper-v server with 3 terminal servers (in fact there are two hyper-v with a totall of 6 terminal servers).
Hyper-V server is W2K8R2 and so are the terminal servers.
Users connect to the terminal servers using RDP and are unable to play sounds locally on their thin and fat clients.
I installed Desktop Experience and offcourse done the steps below.
    Win2008
    Start -> Run -> services.msc
Change the Windows Audio service from 'Disabled' to 'Automatic' - and start it.
Lauch the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility by going to START -> RUN/SEARCH -> and typing entering the following command: tsconfig.msc <ENTER>
On the right-hand pane, double click on 'RDP-TCP'
    Select the 'Client Settings' tab
Clear/Uncheck the Audio and video playback check box
Log off the system and launch your RDP client.
Before you connect to the system, click the Options button/arrow to expand the RDP session options.
Click the ‘Local Resources Tab’ and under ‘Remote audio’ click the ‘Settings’ button.
On the window that pops-up, under ‘Remote audio playback’ click ‘Play on this computer’ and click OK.
Connect to the virtual machine and you now have sound!
(quick test, you can use START -> RUN -> c:\windows\media\tada.wav  (it may prompt you to configure Media Player for first usage).
After this, the users are still unable to play audio in their terminal session.
They have boxes or headphones connected to their devices and are able to play audio local on their fat clients. (Windows pc's)
    Does anyone has more idea's?

    Hi Brinkman79,
Please ensure that the "Audio service" is running , if it is not enabled please refer to following steps :
To start the Windows Audio service
1.On the RD Session Host server, open the Services snap-in. To open the Services snap-in, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
2.If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Yes.
3.In the Services pane, right-click Windows Audio, and then click Properties.
4.On the General tab, in the Startup type box, select Automatic, and then click Apply.
    5.Under Service status, click Start.
6.Click OK to close the Windows Audio Properties dialog box.
7.Confirm that the Status column for the Windows Audio service displays Started.

  • Java is very slow on terminal servers

Hi, we have several terminal servers for clients. But running Java (JRE) on a bank website, is very slow to load the Java plugin. So the whole login takes around 1-2mins to complete.
We run Windows Server 2008 R2 which is virtualized with VMWare, we run the latest Java client v7 Update 17. Java has always been slow on these servers, is there a way to teak it somewho, so it loads faster?

    WoOber wrote:
Its me who have setup the whole server, but users experience really that Java starts really slow when they try to login on their bank on the web.And how is that login done? In an applet? Because then the performance issue is on their own computer in their own private installations of browsers and Java runtimes, not your terminal. Applets tend to load 'slowly', especially on older versions of Java. The feeling of slowness tends to be because people compare the loading time to Flash, a completely different beast.

  • Office 2007 Licencing on 2008 R2 Terminal Servers

    Hi All,
Is Office on terminal server licenced per user accessing Office? or per user accessing the terminal server?
I am in the process of moving to terminal servers and thinclient rollout.
There are currently around 200 users, connecting to 4 Windows 2008 Terminal servers and all is looking good.
Exactly half of these users will not have access to Office at all, I currently restrict those users by software restriction policies.
I currently have 200 licences for office, 100 of which are being used.
As the rollout continues, eventually there will be 400 users on the terminal servers, 200 of which will use office.
Do I need a total of 400 licences for office? Or will the 200 we currently own suffice?

  • Client Side Rendering on Terminal Servers

I’m having horrible printer issues on my Terminal Servers such as slow printing, slow to add printers, some applications load slowly because they are enumerating the list of printer (thanks Procmon), slow logons, etc. I'm trying to get Client Side Rendering
(CSR) disabled. From what I can tell it still appears to be on. Terminal Server are Windows Server 2008 SP2 x86.
On my print servers I have verified that all printers have Render print jobs on client computer unchecked. I have a Group Policy linked to the OU that the Terminal Servers are in that has
Always render print jobs on the server set to enabled. Per
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/02/10/ws2008-client-side-rendering.aspx I have verified that on each Terminal Server in
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers the
ForceCSREMFDespooling value is present & set to 1 so the GP is being applied.
However I still have tons of entries in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider\Servers\<SERVERNAME>\Printers.
I have found KB958656 which seems to describe my problem that CSR is not being disabled. However one of the files it updates is older than a file that I have (win32spl.dll) & one is newer (printcom.dll).
Printcom.dll in hotfix is 6.0.6001.22288 mine is 6.0.6001.18000
Win32spl.dll in hotfix is 6.0.6001.22288 mine is 6.0.6002.18005
Has anyone else seen this behavior & been able to get CSR disabled?
Has anyone else had success with the KB hotfix mentioned or know whether or not installing it would causing any issues (since it has that older file)?
Thanks in an advance to any input.

    Alan/Patrick,
Hi, sorry, went away on leave for a while so didn’t respond.
Alan – our case was REG:112081612189183.
For someone who has been dealing with MS support for about 20 years, this was the most disappointing of any support call I’ve ever had raised – to have the call shut
down, without a perfmon trace, process explorer analysis, or hang dump analysis (of spooler) – and simply blame “3rd party drivers” without any proof – is utterly deplorable.
Anyway, for anyone’s benefit who has similar problems – trying to do direct printing from RDS – I’ve managed to get a solution working.
    Here are the details;
    A nightly print spooler clean-up script that;
    Stops the spooler
Deletes the entire key under “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider”
Re-creates the key (empty) and sets the value "RemovePrintersAtLogoff"=dword:00000000
    Note, this was vital.
MS support had recommended we set this to 1, along with some other keys (InactiveGuidPrinterAge,
InactiveGuidPrinterTrim) with specific values.  If we used these MS support recommended values, our RDS serer would not enumerate printers for more than 3-4 hours before requiring a restart of the spooler.
    Restart the spooler
Map a printer (just to make sure it works)
Clean up the USERS\.DEFAULT\Printers key on all existing servers
There was heaps of crap here, the default user NTUSER.DAT was over 800MB in size
    Modify the security on the registry, using GPO to deny SYSTEM write access as below, to stop the crap writing here again;
    USERS\.DEFAULT\Printers
    Deny Set value
    Deny Create Subkey
Run NGREGOPT on all servers to compress the DEFAULT and SOFTWARE hives back down.
Even though we had deleted the crap from “Client Side Rendering Print Provider” and the DEFAULT user hive, the registry files were still large of course, and needed to be compressed to reduce
    paged pool usage.
Note, make sure no users are on the server when this is run !
With the nightly spooler ‘refresh’ and the registry security changes, we are no longer seeing any problems.
In addition the paged pool has gone down from 5GB to 1GB – which I believe was related to the registry bloat that had occurred previously.
Cleaning up the keys and using NGREGOPT has fixed this.
In addition, I am running a spooler check script every 30 minutes on each of the 13 servers.
This script checks how long it takes to enumerate the printers for the specific test user.
If it takes more than 20 seconds, we get an alert.
Since I have made the changes above, we no longer have any printing problems… touch wood.. even using HPD 5.4 for most printers, and other (RICHO) 3rd party
    drivers.
If anyone wants the scripts (the spooler refresh or the check script) let me know on david.frith<at>glfconsulting.com.au

  • Error installing SQL Compact 3.5 sp2 on 2012 64-bit server.

Sql Compact 3.5 sp2 will not install on 2012 64-bit server.  I'm getting an error that the replication components need to be installed for Sql 2008.  My Sql Server is at sp1 (11.0.3393) and is replicating currently to another Sql Server.
Both 64 and 32 bit installs gives me this error.

First, you need the latest tools, build 8089, download links here:
    http://erikej.blogspot.dk/2010/08/sql-server-compact-35-sp2-downloadable.html
And secondly (I assume this is a 2 server configration, with separate IIS and SQL Server?) - you need to install the 2012 database engine as well, to get the replicaation components installed (just stop and disable the SQL Server service after install, so
it does not consume any unneccesary resources)
And thirdly, SQL 2012 SP1 is not enough, you must install the latest CU, both on the IIS server and on the database server.
Let me know if that was unclear.
Please mark as answer, if this was it. Visit my SQL Server Compact blog http://erikej.blogspot.com

  • Quicktime 7.04, Windows Terminal servers, and no sound

    Hi all,
I suspect this is related to all those posts I've already read here about sound problems with QT 7.04...
I look after a number of Windows 2003 terminal servers in schools. They used to have QuickTime 6.52 and played sound just fine. However, when I upgraded them to 7.04, the video played but no sound. Testing is easy; I just open up the SAMPLE.MOV in the QuickTime folder! On a terminal server with 6.52, it plays video AND audio just fine. But when I upgrade that same box to 7.04, the sound is then gone!
I suppose the quick solution is to revert back to 6.52. Our concern of course was all the talk about 6.52 having various security vulnerabilities--the fix was to upgrade to 7.04.
So now I have a secure version of QuickTime, but it doesn't play audio anymore. Not much of a solution!!!
Thoughts? Am I stuck waiting for a 7.05 fix? On the terminal servers, the safe mode (wave out only) was already the default option for QT 7.04, and I've tried making various adjustments to no avail.
    Thanks for any help,
    Sir Timbit

    Sir Timbit,
We are experiencing the exact same issue at our school. Most of our classrooms are thin client PCs connecting to a Win2003 terminal server. When we decided to go thin client, we tested all multimedia applications that we could think of. With the upgrade to QT 7, we now have stuttering audio. I certainly hope that Apple is woking on a fix for this as it is negatively impacting our instructors as well as creating a perception that Quicktime is not a good multi-media application.
So, while I don't have a solution... I hope that someone at Apple will address our needs.

  • Access GPU on PHYSICAL terminal servers

    Hello,
How can i get access to GPU on PHYSICAL terminal servers (2008R2/2012R2)?
GPU is required for D3D/OGL apps in remote sessions.
    Two variants are acceptable:
    1) access to server GPU
    2) access to client GPU

    Hi,
Currently there is no option to give access to physical GPU under RDSH.  For DirectX applications under Server 2012 R2, you
may see a benefit by having a physical GPU in the server, with RDSH running on physical, and Enabling Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions group policy setting.
You will need to test the specific DirectX application(s) to see if there is any benefit to the scenario described above.

  • CorrectFilePaths & SQL Compact Edition problems

    Hello,
I've got some problems using Application Compatibility Tool and the CorrectFilePaths fix for one of our Applications that use MS SQL Compact Edition 3.5 SP2 for storing users settings.
We are using redirected AppData Roaming (points to P:\Profiles\AppData, P:\ is a network drive), the issue originated with some users having trouble running 2 or more instances of the application. SQL CE only allows ONE process to write to the .sdf file
if it's on a network drive. This is not the case if the .sdf is on a local drive, ex. in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local, so I thought I'd try to use CorrectFilePaths to redirect that .sdf to the local appdata folder.
After many tries to redirect just the .sdf and no luck I decided to try to redirect the whole application folder in Roaming AppData to the Local AppData, this seems to work for everything except the SQL CE .sdf file.. D'oh!
The command I've used with CorrectFilePaths: "%userappdata%\Infor;%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Infor"

  • Network printers on Terminal Servers

    Hi,
We have 14 terminal servers (2008) that we work on and every time we add/remove a printer, I've been manually going onto each server and making the change (which is especially time consuming when adding network printers). I'm just wondering if anyone knows
a faster way to do this without going on to each TS and adding printer, etc? I know there is the Easy Print but we do not use it for various reasons. Also, all of our printers are on each TS, they are not user specific so it seems it should be easier. Any
    ideas?

    Hi,
Thanks for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
According to your comment, I can suggest you to try a script to add/remove printers. Go through beneath article for detail.
