SQL Developer Data Modeler: free of licensing costs like SQL Developer?

Sue and SQL Developer Team,
At what release did Data Modeler become free? And by "free" does this mean free for development only? Or free of cost for any and all production use? From what I recall, early releases of Data Modeler were "free" to download but required for-pay licensing to use.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/overview/index.html
"SQL Developer Data Modeler is a free data modeling and design tool..."
If there is a license fee for Data Modeler, then the above statement would be as misleading as one like the following:
"Oracle Enterprise 11g is a free database..."
Free to download, yes. Not free for production usage.

Evidently the answer is "yes" this time. Free as in free of licensing costs:

  • Represent interfaces in data model

How can a Java interface with its own properties be represented in a data model? It would be like multiple inheritance for implementing classes from a data perspective, but in some data modeling it says that multiple inheritance is an illegal data modeling construct...
How do you go about representing interfaces? For example, many classes that are in their own inheritance hierarchies but all implement an interface with getters and setters for a particular persistent property?
    Thanks.

How can a Java interface with its own properties be
represented in a data model? It can't.
    It would be like
multiple inheritance for implementing classes from a
data perspective, My experience says that is a bad idea. For version one it seems like employee should be a child of person. And then for version two you have to add contractors, and volunteers and even companies (as an entity that produces work and gets paid an hourly rate) and then the inheritence model completely fails.
How do you go about representing interfaces? For
example, many classes that are in their own
inheritance hierarchies but all implement an
interface with getters and setters for a particular
persistent property? In a modeling tool I might have one page that lists impementations of some interfaces.
On another page I just show relationships with the interfaces (no implementations are shown.)
A data object itself should not be an interface.

  • Will SQL Developer always be free? Evidently Data Modeling extension won't.

After learning the Data Modeling extension to SQL Developer was actually a for-pay product (only the Early Adopter release is free, evidently), I now wonder:
Will SQL Developer always be free, or is there a chance it will be converted into a for-pay product? I don't want to invest any more time learning the tool if there will be future license fees to pay.
I was sad to learn Data Modeling won't be free. Not knowing how much it might cost, I don't want to invest any time at all playing with it.
    Thanks.
    Dana

Thanks K. Hope to learn more about the Data Modeling extension pricing--not that I'll be able to afford it. Too bad--I see Oracle going in a great direction with SQL Developer being free. It's a shame Data Modeling won't be. Right now, I am stuck using Enterprise Architect--and that's very limited for database design. Evidently it can be modified to do a lot more, but I don't have the skills or time to turn it into something it should do out of the box.
What other free data modeling tools are out there? I liked Druid III, but that doesn't seem to be under active development. There's an Open Source tool called Power Architect, but it was rather buggy the last time I evaluted it:

Maybe it has improved since then (about a year ago).

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler 2.0.0 - Licensing  Terms?

    Hi Sue & Co.
I just downloaded SQL Developer Data Modeler 2.0.0. Very cool.
Any news regarding the Licensing terms?
    Cheers,
    Patrick

    Hi Patrick,
All licensing questions and details can be accessed through the [Oracle Electronic Delivery|http://edelivery.oracle.com/] site. You'd be looking for the "Oracle Database Tools Media Pack for Microsoft Windows (32-bit)". The price list is available on the Oracle [Price Lists | http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/pricelists.html] site (see Technology).
The product will be available on the Oracle Store later in July.

  • Does SQL Developer Data Modeler fit-in??

    Hi Everyone,
Wish you happy new year 2011.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler support conceptual, logical and physical in our modeling or only logical and physical?
We all use Erwin for modeling. Erwin works without database repository storing models in desktop folders and provide additional reporting. I find some place SQL Developer Data Modeler talked about repository need.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler store the models in local/network folders instead of Database server?
What are the functions need database based repository to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler?
We are thinking of using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our conceptual, Logical, and data dictionary need. Will it help in our need?
Do we need to face any surprises on using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our need?
Thanks in sharing your experience and helping me out.
    RI

    1) Do we need to have Oracle database at back end to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler? No, Data Modeler use Oracle database only if you create reporting repository.
Data Modeler is free, you need database license only if you want to log service request
    2) Will SQL Developer Data Modeler create any tables (as backend repository ) in Oracle database to store Model details? no
    3) Do we need to create reporting schema in backend oracle database to generate reports of SQL Developer Data Modeler's items such as Entity/attributes etc?no, reports can be created out of current loaded design. However having reporting repository will give you additional benefits - history (reports can be generated for every snapshot of your designs there) and multi-user usage, you can create your own reports
    4) Do we to use SQL Developer Data Modeler reverse engineer from DB2, SqlServer, Terra data etc?Data Modeler has full support for Oracle, DB2/390, DB2/UDB(LUW) and MS SQL Server. Reverse engineering from other databases (including Terra Data) is at generic JDBC level - you'll get some and some will be missing (no check constraints for example).
You can read release notes http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/ea2-releasenotes-185793.html

  • SQL Developer Data Modeling pricing

I just downloaded the EA version of SQL Developer Data Modeling. I read in the release notes that the production release won't be free - any idea about the pricing ?
    Matthias

Once the pricing for SQL Developer Data Modeling has been confirmed, we will release the full licensing detail. This will not affect the SQL Developer licensing that exists today. We plan to release SQL Developer Data Modeling as a stand alone product and then as an extension to SQL Developer, for those who want to work in an integrated environment. You can download the second early adopter release of SQL Developer Data Modeling and test and use the product. Once we have a production release, we will not answer queries on the early adopter releases and the feedback application we are currently offering for this will be shut down. As such you can continue to work with the early adopter release, but it is incomplete and would be unsupported.

  • Problems with printing from SQL Developer Data Modeler 2.0

    Hi,
I am not able to print my Relational Model (SubView) from Data Modeler 2.0 Build 584. Only an empty page comes out. If I don't reduce the Print Scale (usually to 10-30%) I get something but then it is lots of pages. I have tried A4 and A3 format. Printing to JPEG or PDF seems to be ok.
I have relational data model with 25 tables in my SubView.
Is there any restriction on Print Scale or number of objects in the diagram?
Do I have to install SQL Developer as well? I have just Data Modeler insalled.
    Regards,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
There is newer version of Data Modeler (3.0 EA2) and it is free
You can download it from here

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Versus SQL Developer

    Friends,
I'm trying to understand the differences between Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler and the ability to use the Data Modeler in SQL Developer.
I've looked at both products home pages on OTN, http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/datamodeler/index.html & http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html and would appreciate your comments on my findings so far
    1) The Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler is a stand-a-lone chargeable product whereas the use of the Data Modeler functionality of SQL Developer is free
    2) The Data Modeler functionality within SQL Developer is basically a "viewer" I can create ERD's of my existing tables by dragging them into the modeler from the object navigator but that's about it. I can't save the diagram for later use or use it to change the structure of the table(s)
    3) If I need to have "Oracle Designer" like ERD capabilities then I need to use Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (after purchase!)
    4) Are there any other differences I have missed?
    Thanks in advance

You can open any diagram created in the stand-alone product in the SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer and navigate through all property dialogs and the full navigator, just like you can in the stand-alone product, but with no update capabilities. This allows developers to fully review the model and all properties, without making changes.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler - 3000$???

The price is a joke, isn't it?
In which point is that tool better than the PL/SQL-Developer from Allround Automations for 180$?

You're not comparing the same things.
Oracle SQL Developer is FREE - compare that with All Round Automations in terms of functionality.
Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler is a separate tool. It's a separate product and is comparable to tools like CA Erwin Data Modeler and Embarcadero's ER Studio - which are certainly not free.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer - domain datatypes

I'm using the SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer (that comes free with SQL Developer) to view a model that was created in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (the chargeable product). The colums have all been defined using domain datatypes. I have an XML file defining the domains but I cannot see where in the viewer you can import a domian file into or where in the model's directory structure the file can be placed to be read by the viewer. Without this the columns are all showing as datatype 'Unknown'.
    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

two set of domains can be maintained in Data Modeler:
    - per installation - they are in file defaultdomains.xml in "datamodeler\domains" directory
    - per design - they are in "domains" directory under your design directory -
"Per installation" domains are used in your case - "per design" domains are "attached" to design - when you send the design to someone else, they are in design structure.
Your solution - to get defaultdomains.xml file from installation where design is created and to put it in your "datamodeler\domains" directory.

  • Foreign key Mapping based on Data - in SQL Developer Data modeler

    Team
Do SQL Developer Data modeler supports Foreign Key mapping based on the Data in the Schema rather defined at the DDL ? For e.g if we implement a Objects Relation ship mapping in Data base, we don't define Foreign keys at table creation.
Toad does this feature through "AUTOMATIC FOREIGN KEYS MAPPING IN TOAD DATA MODELER" more info at (http://toadworld.com/Blogs/tabid/67/EntryId/905/Automatic-Foreign-Keys-Mapping-in-Toad-Data-Modeler.aspx)
any one know how to implement through some scripts also helps me
    Regards
    Raj

If you have table PKs defined and the candidate columns match those PK columns, then you can use the Discover Foreign Keys utility. Right mouse over the relational model name (node) in the left browser. It is about half way down the menu. I did a blog post about it last week on kentgraziano.com.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0 Bugs, Resolution and workarounds

The purpose of this thread is to list bugs discovered while using ORACLE SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0
Mainly with SQL SERVER 2005 and ORACLE 10g models.

SQL Server Physical model doesn't save table identity column.
here are the steps to get this bug:
    1. create a table in relational model with a column as an integer to be used as an identity.
    2. create or open a physical model for SQL-SERVER 2005
    3. open the table in the physical model
    4. edit the integer column property dialog
    5. tick the identity check box and close the property dialog
    6. save the model and close it
    7. open it again, you will find the identity check is removed! (probably not saved from the start)

  • Customising the Legend  (Legend Box) - SQL DEVELOPER DATA MODELER

    Hi,
Is there a way to customize the legend Box (obtained when you right click Show->Legend in the Relational or Logical model window) in the latest latest version of SQL Developer Data Modeler.
For example i would like to remove a particular attribute from the legend say Changed by or Author.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    It is not possible.
There will be such option in the future.
