SQL Developer fails to query table

I am trying to use SQL Developer (v3.2.20.09) to query a particular table in an Oracle 10G database using a simple "select * from table" query.  When I run the query SQL Developer sits there forever waiting for results but nothing is every returned.
The table is relatively small, just a few thousand rows and just half a dozen columns (mixture of numbers, short text strings and datetimes).  I can run other queries on the table in question so I know I have privileges, it's just when run a simple query to return all columns and all rows it fails.  I even tried to an export of the table using Tools->Database Export but that too just sat there forever failing to complete.
Any ideas?  It seems that there is just something in the table that SQL Developer doesn't like.

I've never used sqlplus before but I just tried it and it runs the same query (select * from [table] where rownum <= 40) without any problems.  The strange thing is that once I could see which row was row 40 in sqlplus I queried just that one row in SQL Developer (using the primary key column) and it worked fine.
I did a bit more experimenting and it doesn't look like a problem with that row in particular just with displaying more than a certain number of rows.  The first column on the table is called OBJ_ID and is a unique integer which forms the primary key.  Row 40 has OBJ_ID = 53.  I tried running:
select * from [table] where obj_id between 40 and 53 - no problems
select * from [table] where obj_id between 30 and 53 - no problems
select * from [table] where obj_id between 20 and 53 - no problems
select * from [table] where obj_id between 10 and 53 - failure as above (no errors but SQL Developer never displays the results)

    Hi,
I've configured HTTP Proxy exactly like MS-IE. Anyway, sql developer fails to access web. This is the error message:

    I'm using sql developer 1.0.0.14.22.
    Martin

Given that the update centre worked for me with proxy authentication in v1422 (and Production v1467 - I would recommend that you upgrade to this with a full download if you can't sort out your proxy issues), I would assume that it is not a SQL Developer bug.
Are you still getting HTTP 407 errors when you have entered your username and password?
Unfortunately, I don't know what username/password expectations a RADIUS based proxy authentication would expect. The only thing I can suggest to try is to explicitly put your username/password in your MS-IE proxy setup and see if you can still access the http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=38606:2 URL through IE. If this fails through IE, the username/password that you are supplying are not what the proxy is expecting.

  • SQL Developer not fetching data tables while writting query

HI , I have recently started using SQL developer 2.1, the problem i face is that SQL DEVELOPER is not showing the tables names while writting the query, we have more than 5000 tables and each table name cannot be remembered.
    Thanks
    Essa

I'm using the Mac version of SQL Developer (Version 2.1.1.64 | Build MAIN-64.45) and I'm having similar problems. I'm currently using OS X Snow Leopard.
The issue does not happen consistently: If I start writing an anonymous block in a new SQL window, the Completion Insight features works well. I can start typing a name of a package (of which there are many in our db) and I'm quickly provided a list matching what I've typed so far. This is also true of variables, functions and procedures within the packages after I type a period following the package name.
However, if I open an existing package body and start editing, the Completion Insight feature becomes less reliable. If I move my cursor to the beginning of the main block of one of the package body's internal procedures, Completion Insight works. As I move down the package and try to insert new code, Completion Insight stops working. I should note that this package body I'm working with has no errors and compiles fine. I'm not sure what this indicates...whether it's an issue with the editors internal parser or some other issue.
I'm not sure the best method for starting SQL Developer via the console window on the Mac. I found the following sh file which does launch it from terminal:
    /Applications/SQLDeveloper.app/Contents/MacOS/sqldeveloper.sh
This does launch the application. As I navigate around and follow the instructions you had given (including ctrl-space) I see no output generated out to the console (errors or other messages).
I'm happy to assist in further debugging. Having Completion Insight work consistently will certainly increase my productivity with the tool.
Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

  • SQL Developer 1.1 Query Builder does not display connection tree

I have installed SQL Developer 1.1 on a PC running Windows XP SP2. I am connecting to Oracle 9.2.0.7.0.
After connecting to the database, I right click in the SQL Worksheet and select Query Builder and when the new window is displayed, there are no tables to select from.
    What is causing this?

    Hi Antony,
Upgrading from SP7 to SP9 fixed a lot of problems for me! It's worth trying.
    Problems solved for me:
Page requests take about 2 minutes to display page (now within a few seconds)
KM SQL logging (30-50Mb per minute) problem fixed.
There are some problems upgrading to SP9, but searching this forum will help you in finding some solutions for this

  • EUS password authentication in sql developer failing with username/password

We have recently changed to use Enterprise User Security (EUS) for our client authentication (password global authentication).
This is working fine but we are encountering an issue with SQL Developer whereby we can't logon using our EUS details, it simply returns the following on the logon screen:

Logging on via sql plus client and server software and other 3rd party tools like pl/sql developer works correctly.

We are using the latest Production release of sql developer 2.1
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Edited by: david butler on Jan 14, 2010 10:45 AM

Further to this, I have now found a suitable resolution to this that doesn't require an external client.
There is a jdbc setting that will allow you to use EUS password authentication.
Add the jdbc line option (below) in the sqldeveloper.conf file (backup the sqldeveloper.conf file first).
    AddVMOption -Doracle.jdbc.thinLogonCapability=o3
The sqldeveloper.conf file can be found wherever you have installed sqldeveloper, under <INSTALL_HOME>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf.
After you add this option, restart SQL Developer and you should be able to use your EUS username / password to authenticate via SQL Developer.

  • SQL Developer 3.0.03 table sql tab errors

In SQL Developer 3.0.03 EA3, when you visit the SQL tab for a table the result is not formatted to be readable or usable fashion.
The generated statements do not have terminating semi-colons or separating slashes, nor is there a line terminator after the end of each statement.
For tables with column comments, all the comment statements are generated in a single line. This is very difficult to read.
In order to make a usable or even readable script from this display, every statement has to be edited to add a statement terminator or separator and to start the next statement on a new line.
The same request, against the same database, using SQL Developer 2.1 displays the expected results.
Edited by: djhenderson on Jan 26, 2011 7:55 PM

You should be able to tweak this in Preferences - Database - Unload/View DDL Options.
Be sure to have the Options checked, along with Pretty Print and Terminator.
For the format, tweak Preferences - Database - SQL Formatter - Oracle.
    Hope that helps,
    K.

  • SQL Developer vs TOAD - query performance question

Somebody made me notice same queries are executing slower in SQL Developer than in TOAD. I'm rather curious about this issue, since I understand Java is "slow" but I can't find any other thread about this point. I don't use TOAD, so I can't compare...
Can this be related to the amount of data being returned by the query ? What could be the other reasons of SQL Dev running slower with an identical query ?
    Thanks,
    Attila

It also occurs to me that TOAD always uses the equivalent of the JDBC "thick" driver. SQL Developer can use either the "thin" driver or the "thick" driver, but connections are usually configured with the "thin" driver, since you need an Oracle client to use the "thick" driver.
The difference is that "thin" drivers are written entirely in Java, but "thick" drivers are written with only a little Java that calls the native executable (hence you need an Oracle client) to do most of the work. Theoretically, a thick driver is faster because the object code doesn't need to be interpreted by the JVM. However, I've heard that the difference in performance is not that large. The only way to know for sure is to configure a connection in SQL Developer to use the thick driver, and see if it is faster (I'd use a stop-watch).
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if you use "TNS" as your connection type, SQL Developer will use the thick driver, while the default, "Basic" connection type uses the thin driver. Otherwise, you're going to have to use the "Advanced" connection type and type in the Custom JDBC URL for the thick driver.

  • SQL Developer keeps dropping my table cols!!

    Howdy,
Really getting to the end of my tether with SQL Developer now, as it likes to drop all my columns (usually leaves one for me which is nice of it) in my tables if I decide to make a change to it.
for example, if I where to change a column to be NOT NULL it will throw an error saying (Could not drop all columns) and I look at my table and wow, I have ONE column left in the table and all my data is then f**ked. Or if I want to edit a constraint, or a index it will do the same! Its random cos it wont do it all the time.
This is unacceptable really, cos I then have to rebuild the DB table and get all contraints back to it. I would NEVER EVER consider using this for live data, oh that would be catastrophic!
Does anybody else have this problem? Is there anything I can do to maybe avoid the problem occuring again?
    Any help will be appreciated!

    Hi,
Sorry, this hasn't just started happening, been doing this ever since I started using SQL Developer, so now I just try to steer clear on making changes that I know has potential of causing me trouble.
At the moment I am on:
    Vista 64bit
    SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build 32.13
Latest version of Java (only downloaded it last week.
But this problem also occured on Vista 32bit witht he same version of SQL Developer. I tried it with the Java included version, and java installed on my machine, but it still done it.
I mainly get the problem if I Right Click > Edit and change Indexes or foreign key details.
I'm running from /bin/ at the moment as I am in a 64bit environment, but it makes no difference what .exe I use!
The error I get is always "Unable to drop all columns"... this is when I was NOT dropping columns, I was just making a change, but I assume oracle drops them and rebuilds it or sumin (im no DBA). Incidently it's usually a DATE column I am left with after its decided to drop all my other columns?

  • SQL Developer 1.5.5 Tables Node Works a few times

When I connect and then view my current users tables by expanding the Tables nodes on the left hand side it works. It will work several times bur after being logged in for a while it stops working although other portions of developer continue to function fine. To resolve this I have to completely close developer and then run it again and connect.

    java.runtime.version     1.5.0_06-b05
    Oracle Server is 10.2.0.3.0
    Oracle Client is 10.2.0.4.0
Client OS is XP Pro SP2
Lets say I add a filter to the Tables Node and then later change it or even remove the filter and no tables show up. Disconnect does not fix it. I have to exit SQL Developer and start it again and connect. the does not seem to be a real pattern as to when the tables no loger show. i will say remove or change the filter and you can see it thinking and then the + sign goes awya but no tables listed even when I know some match the filter or even when no filter.

  • SQL Developer Behavior When Gathering Table/Index Statistics

    Hey All,
Not sure if this has been posted yet. I did a search and did not find any threads on the topic though.
I noticed with SQL Developer 2.x, when you using the context menu to gather table/index statistics for a given table, you get no modal progress/waiting window like you did in 1.x. It just kind of "does nothing", even though it did actually execute the DBMS_STATS package. If you press cancel and try to navigate around, you get multiple "Connection is Busy" errors. Eventually it will come back and say "Statistics gathered for table <whatever>". In the old versions there was just a modal window with an animated progress bar while it ran the DBMS_STATS package. What happened to that? Or is this something unique to my install? Anyone else ran into this? Is there a fix or somewhere I can report this as an official bug? FWIW I'm running 2.1.1.64, and this did occur in the initial 2.0 release.
It is very confusing the first time you run into it... I pressed the "apply" button several times thinking it didn't take, but it ended up running the DBMS_STATS for every click I did.
    Thanks!

Same happens to all the other context menu opened dialogs. Indeed very confusing at first and disturbing.
The only official site to report bugs is Metalink/MOS, but you might be lucky if someone from the team picks it up here.
    Regards,
    K.

  • SQL Developer replacement for Query Builder?

Our developers use query builder to quickly develop sql code w/conditions, joins, where clauses, etc. I just installed release 2 of SQL Developer and am trying to figure out if this is a viable replacement for query builder. Is there a graphical "query builder" component as part of SQL Developer?

Barry, I would agree that it should be clean and easy to use. I started using Data Browser 2.0 and migrated to Query Builder 6.0.7.1.0 and while Query Builder is no longer it's own product it's integrated into Reports Developer 10g. The basic layout and operation has been consistent thru the life cycle and I would think you'd keep the "look and feel" consistent with what's currently available. (might simplify integrating it too). My biggest complaint with Query Builder 6.0.7 (se don't use the 10g version) is that it errors when opening a schema with more than 8192 objects. As an E-Business Suite 11.5.10 customer this is an issue for our developers when logging in as the standard APPS user.
So here would be my "wish list"
    1. consistent look and feel with "older" versions of Browser/Query Builder
    2. removal of 8192 object limitation
    3. ability to open older .brw format files
Certainly more improvements would be possible by integrating with SQL Developer and would be welcomed - this wish list is coming from a user who has MANY .brw files in the older 6.0.7 format.

  • How i can force sql developer to show just tables of HR schema ?

In sql developer we can filter the tables that it shows under table node ,
how i can force it just to show tables of HR schema ?
    Thanks

See my post in your other thread (How i can deal with DB schema in SQL developer ?
In this case, you let only the HR user in the right panel.

  • SQL Developer failed to start !

    Hi:
Sorry for posting new thread abot my problem. I found many threads talking about a similar problem but I couldn't find the answer.
I downloaded the last version -so far- of SQL Developer 2.1.1.64.45 (Oracle SQL Developer for 32-bit Windows (This zip file includes the JDK1.6._11)). and after extracting and running, the following error appears
This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
when I click "OK" button another message appears Unable to launch the Java Virtual Machine Located at path: ..\..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
I'm using Windows XP SP2 and JVM is version 6 update 19.
    Thanks,
    Saad

First of all, check if you have directory structure, more specifically the one mentioned above. If you haven't, unzip again with the proper structure.
Then check MSVCR71.dll on your system, which additionally should be in your PATH environment var (commonly \Windows\System32). If it ain't, get it from your search engine.
    Hope that helps,
    K.
