SQL Developer hangs after each query
I have a strange situation that just started. After every query, SQL Developer 3.0.02 just hangs for about 20 seconds and then returns to normal. The times displayed for the query completion are correct - it's just the UI freeze. I am running under Vista against a 10R2 database. All was working fine since 1/13/11 until last Friday. Running with the included JDK.
Any idea what changed?
This could be related to a problem with SQL History. If you have SQL History open, it can slow things down drastically.

SQL Developer hangs for a few minutes after being idle for a while.
Is anyone aware of any issues with SQL Developer hanging for several minutes after being idle for several hours? After being idle for several hours (and probably minimized), when we bring up SQL Developer we just get a blank white window for several minutes before it becomes functional. Obviously, this isn't a critical issue, but sure is annoying when you run into it.
Thanks in advance!!
RobThis is fairly typical java application behaviour. For whatever reason, they are particularly prone to being swapped out by the operating system and take time to swap back in.
There is an add-in around called "keepresident" which helps this but I thought it had been superceded in later JDK version. -
SQL Developer hangs periodically
Hi,
I'm connecting to my test instance (Oracle XE) and each 5mins-10mins SQL Developer hangs. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, I can be executing a big query or I wasn't doing anything for a while and then simply consulting Columns of a table and hangs...
I saw the underlying error is:
oracle.javatools.util.CanceledException
at oracle.dbtools.raptor.utils.Connections.getConnection(Connections.java:568)
at oracle.dbtools.raptor.utils.DBObject.getConnection(DBObject.java:323)
at oracle.dbtools.raptor.utils.DBObject.getConnection(DBObject.java:435)
at oracle.dbtools.raptor.oviewer.base.ViewerEditorAddin.getEditorWeight(...
What may I check?
Any help will be appreciated.

SQL Developer hangs when expanding table node
Hello All,
One of my schemas has 3035 tables. When I expand the "Other Users" node, then the schema owner, then expand "Tables", SQL Developer hangs. I have allowed it to run (as it indicates it is working) for 45 minutes, but it never returns.
I have one user with nearly the same behavior, but theirs returns after waiting 5 minutes.
Any ideas?

SQL developer hangs on Win XP if not admin user
Hi, I just installed Oracle 11g on Win XP sp2, as admin user.
Things appear working, except for SQL Developer which runs fine only when logging in to XP as administrator.
If I log in as a normal user, then SQL Developer hangs forever just after being started up, eating 50% of CPU. Task manager is required to stop it.
A few more details: it hangs just after asking about file name associations, showing on the left panel the connection I did while being admin.
SQL Plus runs just fine in any case.
If I run the alternative version (sqldeveloper.exe), the involved window reports:
WARNING: Unknown directive: SetSkipJ2SDKCheck
Using oracle.home=C:\oracle\app\Admin\product\11.1.0\db_1\sqldeveloper
Using ide.user.dir=null

javax.management.InstanceAlreadyExistsException: com.oracle.jdbc:type=diagnosability,name=main11.0
at com.sun.jmx.mbeanserver.RepositorySupport.addMBean(RepositorySupport.java:452)
then the ide windows hangs as reported above.
Any help is appreciated.- sqldev is slower - and yes my machine is fast
- sqldev needs a mouse; the keyboard shortcuts are severely lacking
- output window is separated from SQL window
- It doesn't show me anything I couldn't get to before by typing commands & using TextPad
As far as sqlplusw.exe vs sqlplus.exe, I won't get into that discussion- all I'll say is that the "workarounds" on the Internet have not addressed my concerns. (control-c exits by accident, having to edit every shortcut on every computer/server I touch which either needs admin elevation or shortcut copy/paste or both, etc)
Either way- thanks again to sperkmandl for the solution (running sqldev as non-administrative user)! I never run on my machine as local admin; I only elevate when needed. -
Folks,
I'm running production SQL Developer on Oracle Linux 5.8 and whenever I click the Java link in the Connections Navigator with a SYS AS SYSDBA connection SQL Developer hangs.
Oracle Enterprise Edition 11.2.0.1.0
SQLDeveloper 4.0.0.13.80
Oracle Linux 6
JDK Version 1.7.0_45
Doing the same thing with user SCOTT (no SYSDBA) works fine (although there are not any Java objects).
Thanks,
RichThis has been logged as a bug.
The bad plan/performance has been logged as a bug. SQL Developer didn't hang for me - I was able to cancel the query using the Task Progress panel. -
Sql developer hangs when saving pl/sql external package or package body fil
When I open a package body file I can modify the contents of the file.
Compilation of the file works fine but when I want to close or save the file SQL developer hangs. I use version 1.2 (previous version did have the same problem.)
Somebody has an idee what I'am doing wrong? Are you using 1.2.1.32.13?

SQL Developer Hangs when connecting for Remote Debug
Hello,
I've been trying to use the Remote Debug feature of SQL Developer. We are writing a Web Application that connects to Oracle and I would like to debug a package function on the database server (which is not the same machine as my SQL Developer client).
To test my configuration, I tried connecting on SQLPlus creating a connection (by calling exec dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); ) and calling a function which had a breakpoint and the debugging started immediately on SQL Developer. Then I tried putting the dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); call inside the stored procedure I was debugging (prior to the line with the breakpoint) and it connected and got to the breakpoint successfully as well. So I'm pretty sure my firewall / user privileges are set up correctly.
So I modified the function that my web application eventually calls to create the connection (in order to remain in the same session) but whenever it gets to the connect_tcp line SQL Developer hangs and I'm unable to debug. I've realized that it only hangs if I have a breakpoint there. If I don't have a breakpoint then it creates a connection just fine. Of course without a breakpoint it's a bit difficult to debug isn't it? :)
My Sql Developer version is 3.0 and I'm connecting to Oracle 11.1.0 Below you can find a dump when running SqlDeveloper with console. My OS is windows XP and my Oracle instance is running on Linux.
I appreciate any help you can provide.

Edited by: 910659 on Jan 27, 2012 7:45 AMWhat I mean is that I put the connect_tcp command inside the package function I want to debug in order to ensure it's going to remain in the same session. e.g.:
Function GetValue Return Varchar2 Is
Begin
dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', '25255');
return 'My Value';
End;
I'm afraid I cannot post our code which causes this problem due to our information security policies and simple console and web applications failed to replicate the problem. The function creates a connection to Oracle SQL Developer (which can be seen in the environment with the small ladybug icon) if no breakpoints are set which obviously doesn't allow breaking into the function. However if a breakpoint is also specified in the Return line the connection seems to freeze Oracle SQL Developer. No ladybug icon is shown and no Remote Debug Session seems to open. -
SQL developer 3.0 - Few Query Builder issues
Hi All,
I have just started using SQL Developer 3.0 so have not fully browsed thru all of the available options in SQL Developer. I have been trying to work on creating and editing sql statements using Worksheet and Query Builder.
I am working on to test this tool so I can give it to the users for them to try and use it - they used to work on the old Query Builder 6.0.7....since it is already de-supported long back to work against 11g database, I am hoping to tell them to use SQL developer 3.0 instead.
Hence, if an user doesn't know how to write a sql statement, he/she would try to do the same using Query Builder.
So, the following questions are more aligned towards a normal user who would try to create a query in the Query Builder window, instead of directly typing a sql statement in the Worksheet window.
1) How to establish/create a relationship between tables after you have dragged down the tables into the Query Builder window? - i tried but couldn't get any options!.
2) Sometimes I see 'Connection closed' error when i try to run a query. How to refresh the connection without opening a new Connection tab?
- I tried this but evertytime it opens up a new connection tab, while the old tab is still present.
3) Columns in the Expression field in Query Builder window can ONLY be displayed in the result set, if the 'output' box on the extreme left of the 2nd section in Query Builder window is checked.
Now when i try to check the output box for an expression (with few aggregate functions), the 'Grouping' check box automatically gets checked, which when run throws an ORA-00934 error: group function is not allowed here...but when I de-select the 'Grouping' check box, the 'output' box also gets un-checked!.
How to solve this out?
Please let me know the resolutions of the above - much appreciated.
With Regards,
Pamir

As Raghu noted above, and you also saw in rp0428's following reply,
Re: Problem with displaying sdo_geometry objects
drilling down to the cell edit details is your only recourse for now. Apparently there will be further work done in this area, but it is not clear exactly what or when it will be. For those with access to it, here is a bug reference:

SQL Developer 3.0 EA1 - Query Result assumes keyboard focus
In the Early Adopter 1 release of SQL Developer and noticed that after running a statement in a worksheet the focus for the keyboard is now in the query results pane. This change in behavior from version 2 is slightly disruptive and makes it harder to iteratively build queries or search for data without having to continuously keep moving the cursor back to the worksheet. I am using the linux version if it makes a difference and it happens both when click the run statement button or use the ctrl+enter shortcut key.
I have been trying out the preview release and all around it looks good and has some very nice improvements. Just this and the missing export to clipboard are the only issues I've had so far.
Edited by: user5490329 on Oct 14, 2010 9:06 AMI agree with the majority of people here that this is annoying and I'd also prefer to leave the input focus in the SQL Worksheet after I hit CTRL+ENTER, so I am looking forward to the fix.
However, in some cases, it would come in handy if there was a shortcut key to quickly get to the query result tab, just like in TOAD, where F6 is used for this purpose. The same key is reserved for autotrace in SQL Developer, so another function key could be used. -
SQL Developer version 1.0.0.14.67
The application immediately freezes (so quickly, in fact, that it doesn’t even remove the context menu from which I have selected “Text” or “CSV”). I can still utilize the general windows controls (minimize/maximize, restore, etc). If I minimize and then restore the application it doesn’t redraw anything bit the title bar. The entire application window is system gray.
The data set I retrieved included 2,208 records with 14 elements each.
I tested it again with a slightly smaller data set (1,982 records) and this time I selected “Text” as the export format. Same result.
The application still shows as “Running” in Task Manager, but the process “sqldeveloperW.exe” shows “00” under CPU activity and never moves. I am experiencing nominal Memory and CPU utilization (other programs are still open). Nothing is pegged @ 100%.
I’ve let the application sit in this state for 10+ minutes with no change. There have been several updates since 1.0.0.14.67. Could you upgrade to the latest version?

Sql Developer hangs/ crashes while debugging
While happily debugging a piece of an SQL package using the remote debugger, I get a hang/crash on SQL devleoper. This occurs when I highlight a piece of code in the debugging window. The application freezes and has to be restarted using WindowsTaskManager.
Is this a reported bug? I was not able to find any discussion on the OTN forums or a quick google.

Bill

SQL Developer 4.0 EA3. query result in export format problem
Query output in export format (insert, csv, xml,...) is not working in 4.0 EA3.
Query executed as script (F5) does not display anything:
select /*insert*/ * from dual;
SQL Developer 3 displays the result correctly:
REM INSERTING into dual
SET DEFINE OFF;
Insert into "dual" (DUMMY) values ('X');

Dear all,
dear Sue Harper,
we use Oracle 10g (upgrade to 11g is planed) and used the Oracle Query Builder Version 6.0.7.1 by now unless we got to know about the SQL Developer 2.1 including the Query Builder a few weeks ago to produce our SQL statements an efficient way.
Even tho the SQL Developer 2.1 Query Builder already has some nice features, like sorting the data fields ascending, export to excel, etc, that the Oracle Query Builder Version 6.0.7.1 did not have had, we miss some essential features, like the in-statement, define column, etc while on the other side tables are not included in SQL-code unless fields are selected or i.e. date fields cannot be queried in the where conditions.
I read the release notes and know that the SQL Developer 2.1 Query Builder is scheduled for rewrite in the next release.
Does it make any sense to summarized all things we noticed and get in touch with whomever it may concern?
Btw, if it would be possible to define a location for the stored connections within the SQL Developer 2.1 it would be very helpful... When starting SQL Developer 2.1 in our Windows Vista network environment it never finds the connection settings (file) automatically and we have to re-import the connections from a pre-defined directory.
Nevertheless, the SQL Developer 2.1 is a pretty user-friendly and most times reliable tool we are thankful for.
Kind regards,
Stefan Wagner

Yep, I saw your post; sorry for not replying, but i thought it's pretty the same problem i have. ;)
The missing possibility to query date-fields in the where clause is really one of a many things i miss in the SQL Dev Query Builder, i am sure you use an "in" statement as well as we do. I think going back to the manual creation of the where condition like we had in Version 6.0.7.1.0 should be okay with most users, at least additional to the current solution as long as the rest of the query can be built within the graphic user interface. Further to save and open a query in gui mode is really, really important for us. Not to mention that the boxes for the tables cannot be stretched over a certain extend and i cant separate the columns any longer :/
Other than that, SQL Developer is a pretty nice tool in my eyes, it's free and hopefully Version 3.0 will be closer to what we would like the SQL Developer to be like.
