SQL Developer hangs when expanding table node

Hello All,
One of my schemas has 3035 tables. When I expand the "Other Users" node, then the schema owner, then expand "Tables", SQL Developer hangs. I have allowed it to run (as it indicates it is working) for 45 minutes, but it never returns.
I have one user with nearly the same behavior, but theirs returns after waiting 5 minutes.
Any ideas?

  • [4.0] Production SQL Developer hangs when attempting to expand Java in the Connection Navigator

    Folks,
I'm running production SQL Developer on Oracle Linux 5.8 and whenever I click the Java link in the Connections Navigator with a SYS AS SYSDBA connection SQL Developer hangs.
    Oracle Enterprise Edition 11.2.0.1.0
    SQLDeveloper 4.0.0.13.80
    Oracle Linux 6
    JDK Version 1.7.0_45
Doing the same thing with user SCOTT (no SYSDBA) works fine (although there are not any Java objects).
    Thanks,
    Rich

This has been logged as a bug.
The bad plan/performance has been logged as a bug. SQL Developer didn't hang for me - I was able to cancel the query using the Task Progress panel.

  • Sql developer hangs when saving pl/sql external package or package body fil

When I open a package body file I can modify the contents of the file.
Compilation of the file works fine but when I want to close or save the file SQL developer hangs. I use version 1.2 (previous version did have the same problem.)
Somebody has an idee what I'am doing wrong?

    Are you using 1.2.1.32.13?

  • SQL Developer Hangs when connecting for Remote Debug

    Hello,
I've been trying to use the Remote Debug feature of SQL Developer. We are writing a Web Application that connects to Oracle and I would like to debug a package function on the database server (which is not the same machine as my SQL Developer client).
To test my configuration, I tried connecting on SQLPlus creating a connection (by calling exec dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); ) and calling a function which had a breakpoint and the debugging started immediately on SQL Developer. Then I tried putting the dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'xxxxx'); call inside the stored procedure I was debugging (prior to the line with the breakpoint) and it connected and got to the breakpoint successfully as well. So I'm pretty sure my firewall / user privileges are set up correctly.
So I modified the function that my web application eventually calls to create the connection (in order to remain in the same session) but whenever it gets to the connect_tcp line SQL Developer hangs and I'm unable to debug. I've realized that it only hangs if I have a breakpoint there. If I don't have a breakpoint then it creates a connection just fine. Of course without a breakpoint it's a bit difficult to debug isn't it? :)
My Sql Developer version is 3.0 and I'm connecting to Oracle 11.1.0 Below you can find a dump when running SqlDeveloper with console. My OS is windows XP and my Oracle instance is running on Linux.
I appreciate any help you can provide.

What I mean is that I put the connect_tcp command inside the package function I want to debug in order to ensure it's going to remain in the same session. e.g.:
    Function GetValue Return Varchar2 Is
    Begin
    dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', '25255');
    return 'My Value';
    End;
I'm afraid I cannot post our code which causes this problem due to our information security policies and simple console and web applications failed to replicate the problem. The function creates a connection to Oracle SQL Developer (which can be seen in the environment with the small ladybug icon) if no breakpoints are set which obviously doesn't allow breaking into the function. However if a breakpoint is also specified in the Return line the connection seems to freeze Oracle SQL Developer. No ladybug icon is shown and no Remote Debug Session seems to open.

  • SQL Developer 1.5.5 Tables Node Works a few times

When I connect and then view my current users tables by expanding the Tables nodes on the left hand side it works. It will work several times bur after being logged in for a while it stops working although other portions of developer continue to function fine. To resolve this I have to completely close developer and then run it again and connect.

    java.runtime.version     1.5.0_06-b05
    Oracle Server is 10.2.0.3.0
    Oracle Client is 10.2.0.4.0
Client OS is XP Pro SP2
Lets say I add a filter to the Tables Node and then later change it or even remove the filter and no tables show up. Disconnect does not fix it. I have to exit SQL Developer and start it again and connect. the does not seem to be a real pattern as to when the tables no loger show. i will say remove or change the filter and you can see it thinking and then the + sign goes awya but no tables listed even when I know some match the filter or even when no filter.

  • SQL Developer Behavior When Gathering Table/Index Statistics

    Hey All,
Not sure if this has been posted yet. I did a search and did not find any threads on the topic though.
I noticed with SQL Developer 2.x, when you using the context menu to gather table/index statistics for a given table, you get no modal progress/waiting window like you did in 1.x. It just kind of "does nothing", even though it did actually execute the DBMS_STATS package. If you press cancel and try to navigate around, you get multiple "Connection is Busy" errors. Eventually it will come back and say "Statistics gathered for table <whatever>". In the old versions there was just a modal window with an animated progress bar while it ran the DBMS_STATS package. What happened to that? Or is this something unique to my install? Anyone else ran into this? Is there a fix or somewhere I can report this as an official bug? FWIW I'm running 2.1.1.64, and this did occur in the initial 2.0 release.
It is very confusing the first time you run into it... I pressed the "apply" button several times thinking it didn't take, but it ended up running the DBMS_STATS for every click I did.
    Thanks!

Same happens to all the other context menu opened dialogs. Indeed very confusing at first and disturbing.
The only official site to report bugs is Metalink/MOS, but you might be lucky if someone from the team picks it up here.
    Regards,
    K.

  • SQL developer hangs on Win XP if not admin user

Hi, I just installed Oracle 11g on Win XP sp2, as admin user.
Things appear working, except for SQL Developer which runs fine only when logging in to XP as administrator.
If I log in as a normal user, then SQL Developer hangs forever just after being started up, eating 50% of CPU. Task manager is required to stop it.
A few more details: it hangs just after asking about file name associations, showing on the left panel the connection I did while being admin.
SQL Plus runs just fine in any case.
If I run the alternative version (sqldeveloper.exe), the involved window reports:
    WARNING: Unknown directive: SetSkipJ2SDKCheck
    Using oracle.home=C:\oracle\app\Admin\product\11.1.0\db_1\sqldeveloper

then the ide windows hangs as reported above.
    Any help is appreciated.

    - sqldev is slower - and yes my machine is fast
    - sqldev needs a mouse; the keyboard shortcuts are severely lacking
    - output window is separated from SQL window
    - It doesn't show me anything I couldn't get to before by typing commands & using TextPad
As far as sqlplusw.exe vs sqlplus.exe, I won't get into that discussion- all I'll say is that the "workarounds" on the Internet have not addressed my concerns. (control-c exits by accident, having to edit every shortcut on every computer/server I touch which either needs admin elevation or shortcut copy/paste or both, etc)
Either way- thanks again to sperkmandl for the solution (running sqldev as non-administrative user)! I never run on my machine as local admin; I only elevate when needed.

  • SQL Developer hangs for a few minutes after being idle for a while.

Is anyone aware of any issues with SQL Developer hanging for several minutes after being idle for several hours? After being idle for several hours (and probably minimized), when we bring up SQL Developer we just get a blank white window for several minutes before it becomes functional. Obviously, this isn't a critical issue, but sure is annoying when you run into it.
    Thanks in advance!!
    Rob

This is fairly typical java application behaviour. For whatever reason, they are particularly prone to being swapped out by the operating system and take time to swap back in.
There is an add-in around called "keepresident" which helps this but I thought it had been superceded in later JDK version.

  • Missing SQL Developer functions when connecting to MS SQL Server 2005

    Hi all,
I've connected SQL Developer to a ms sql server db. Now I can't use the functions from SQL Developer like
    - Drag&Drop tables to the sql-sheet,
    - autocompletition of attributes (Strg+Space).
Is this function not supported or do I have to change some preferences?
    THX Steve

Unfortunately most of the advanced functions of SQL Developer are supported only for oracle databases, so on ms sql, or almost anything else you can do little more than browse data.

  • SQL Developer crashing when opening or testing a connection

SQL Developer closes abruptly when opening or testing a connection.
    Here's what I do.
    Open SQL Developer.
    Create a connection:
    Connection Name: [some string]
    Username: [username]
    Password: [password]
    Save password: checked
    Oracle tab:
    Connection type: TNS
    Connect Identifier: somedatabasename
Then I click on "Test" and the application immediately quits. No error messages. The app does the same thing if I save the connection and try to expand its node on the list of connections.
Mind you, if I use sqlplus like so:
    [username]/[password]@somedatabasename
    It connects just fine.
I captured the output from the command console after SQL Developer crashed:

  • 1.5.4 - Slow to expand tables node for a oracle 9 connection

    Hi
I have been trying out version 1.5.4 and have found that expanding the tables node on the connections tab is extremely slow (approx 3 min) for my oracle 9.2.0.6 connections.
As with this [this bug |http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=867600&tstart=0] it is ok on a 10.2.0.3 connection.
Expanding the tables node for the same connection in 1.5.3 is also fine. I'm abit concerned that this latest version of sql dev has not been tested particularly thoroughly with oracle 9.
Is oracle 9 still a supported version with sql developer?
    thanks
    paul

It's not just Oracle 9 that is having problems with the table node. I am connecting to a 10.2.0.3 DB (basic connection) using JDK 1.6.0_06 and filtering for a single table (using = and case sensitive). On 1.5.4 this takes 25 seconds but on 1.5.3 this only takes 2 seconds. However, without a filter, the 1.5.4 performance is significantly better than the 1.5.3 performance without a filter.
The queries SQL Developer uses certainly have been changed between 1.5.3 and 1.5.4.
    1.5.3 query:select * from (

  • Import an excel file into SQL Developer and create a table

    Hello everyone!
I have an Excel file I want to Import into SQL Developer. Do I need to Create a table first than import the file into the table?
Or is there a way to import an Excel file and it automatically generate or turn into a table?
I would really appreciate any directions or explanations.
    Thanks everyone!

I suspect that you are having memory problems opening the excel file. This is a known issue with excel files for importing and exporting. Check this post for suggestions:

SQLDeveloper TeamThanks for the reply but the problem was I needed to convert the file to a csv format. To do this open the file in Excel and re-save as CSV Comma Delimiter. Don't worry about data-types because when the file is uploaded to SQL Developer, you will have the chance to set all the parameters, data-types and so on.
Once I did this and try opening the file, the setup window opened and I was able to do all the additional tweaking and convert the data to a table.
Because of this I am speculating that SQL Developer does not work with Excel XLSX extension.
    Thanks again!

  • Not showing objects in left pane when expanding the nodes (V 1.5.1)

    Hi All,
When expanding DB objects nodes (tables, procedures, packages etc), not showing objects in node.
Can anyone know why it is so and what has to be done?

If they're other users' objects, use the Other Users node. All are owned by me (not speaking about other's objects).
Do give OS/JDK/DB versions when you post, and mind v3.0 is production.OS Windows Xp

  • SQL Developer 3.0.03 table sql tab errors

In SQL Developer 3.0.03 EA3, when you visit the SQL tab for a table the result is not formatted to be readable or usable fashion.
The generated statements do not have terminating semi-colons or separating slashes, nor is there a line terminator after the end of each statement.
For tables with column comments, all the comment statements are generated in a single line. This is very difficult to read.
In order to make a usable or even readable script from this display, every statement has to be edited to add a statement terminator or separator and to start the next statement on a new line.
The same request, against the same database, using SQL Developer 2.1 displays the expected results.

You should be able to tweak this in Preferences - Database - Unload/View DDL Options.
Be sure to have the Options checked, along with Pretty Print and Terminator.
For the format, tweak Preferences - Database - SQL Formatter - Oracle.
    Hope that helps,
    K.
