but the it doesnt start after double clicking it.. i also created a listener using netca..
please help ..
thanks in advance .....

Do you have a jdk installed on your machine? You need java 1.6 jdk at least to run SQL Developer.
Go down to the bin directory in your sql developer install dir, and run the sqldeveloper.exe from there.
This will give you a command window and you'll see any error messages that are being generated.
There are plenty of blog posts out there where people have documented the exact steps to get SQL Developer going on their specific Linux derivative. Try checking those for help as well.

• SQL Developer will not start - no errors, no splash, nothing

Good morning!
My company no longer has licenses to use Toad, so all new hires here are instructed to install SQL Developer in order to connect to our Oracle DBs. I happen to have worked here long enough to have Toad, but also have SQL Developer (w/JD2K) in order to guide them through it, troubleshoot, etc.
Well, now the troubleshooter is in trouble. My own copy of SD no longer starts (it used to, and I had multiple connections set up). Period. I get no splash screen. No error messages. I can't even find processes running in the background (Windows XP, SP2). I can't find logs showing errors. I've changed sqldeveloper.conf to run in debug mode, hoping it would display errors - something, ANYthing - to give me a clue. I've downloaded the latest and greatest zip. I've deleted the "sqldeveloper" folders over and over and unzipped over and over.
I'm no DBA or Sysadmin, so don't know what other tricks I can try to debug this problem. Basically, if I didn't still have Toad for connecting to our DBs, I'd be hosed. I won't uninstall Toad because it won't be possible to "get it back," so to speak, in case that doesn't help SD run.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

I'm getting something similar. I just got a new work computer and I get the Oracle SQL Developer splash screen briefly before it disappears. The process shows on my XP task manager but not in the applications tab. It worked and still works fine on the old computer. From another post, I thought it may be a display setting, but I seem to be using the Windows Classic Theme (although, I can't verify it because it has been disabled on my PC). I also have several java related entries in the Add Programs Control Panel:

• SQL Developer will not start - could not install some modules

I just installed the Java JDK 7u51 as well as the JRE 7u51. Following that I extracted SQL Developer to a fresh directory. When I open SQL Developer I get the following error message:
Warning - could not install some modules:
JDeveloper/NetBeans Bridge - The module named oracle.ide was needed and not found.
Extensions Cache - The module named oracle.javaxide was needed and not found.
Extensions Cache - The module named oracle.ide was needed and not found.
Actions Bridge - The module named oracle.javatools was needed and not found.

Any idea why I'm getting this message? I installed it on my laptop with no problem.

What is the directory structure under you SQLDeveloper directory?
Is should be something like tthe list below.   If it isn't something has gone wrong with your extraction.

• Installation problem, SQL developer does not start

Hi,
I have tried to install both version of SQL Developer, with and without JRE.
But when I click the sqldeveloper.exe file nothing happens. Nothing at all!
Do any of you have any tips or ideas what the problem could be?
I have the latest java jdk installed and jre.
regards
Baran

What output do you get when if you run from the command line?

• SQL developer will not start/run

I have the latest version of sql developer. Java is also installed. When I click sqldeveloper.exe, nothing happens :( Please advise!

Hi Fury,
I have the latest JDK installed(I also tried 1.5). I dont believe its a Java issue. All versions of Java I've tried install and work fine w/ other progs/apps. The issue is simply w/ SQLDeveloper. Even w/o Java installed, I click the .exe and NOTHING happens. I just get a quick CMD box blip on my screen...nothing logs in task mgr or no error msgs. Just really weird why NOTHING occurs at all.
Please advise! Also, what did you mean by "try running <SQL Dev Dir>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.exe". I didnt see any bin files given w/in the zip that I downloaded. I'll check again.
Thanks!

• Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler start up error

Hi All,
I just downloaded Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009] by selecting the option "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE)"
After I installed the same and tried to run it by clicking datamodeler.exe, I get the following error message
"unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
On the same machine I can successfuly run the Oracle SQL Develper with no errors. My machine is having Windows XP Professional SP3.
Any ideas? If there was a problem with Java, than the Oracle SQL Developer should also not run. But as stated it runs with out any error but the Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler gives the above error.
Regards,
JAA149

1 - The above problem has nothing to do with the memmory. I tried on a 400 MB RAM, 900 MB RAM, 1.5 MB RAM & 2 MB RAM with the same arror.
"unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
http://i30.tinypic.com/9vkwf6.jpg
2 - There are two "datamodeler.exe: files
One is at D:\datamodeler\datamodeler.exe
2nd is at D:\datamodeler\bin\datamodeler.exe
The same error occurs with both the files.
3 - The Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler version is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009]" and the file I downloaded is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE) - (57M)"
If I look in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\README.txt" I find
"Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition Runtime Environment Version 6"
If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\javacpl.exe" I get
http://i30.tinypic.com/mt8ocn.jpg
If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\jureg.exe" I get
http://i28.tinypic.com/30boiyo.jpg
If i check at the control panle add/remove program
http://i30.tinypic.com/1428tba.jpg
If I go to "http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp" and download "jre-6u16-windows-i586-s.exe" and run it.
If I go to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6" I find the same files as in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre"
I am able to run Oracle SQL Developer with out any kind of error let alone the above one. But with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler I get the above mentioned error no matter what I try.
As the error states "unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll". The file "jvm.dll" is located at two places. One at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll" and the second at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll"
A similiar problem occurs with JDeveloper with the fllowing solution
http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=506339&start=0&tstart=0
Which states the following
"hello!
in the problem with JDeveloper i have a solution. The jdk have a file jvm.dll in the path: jdk/jre/bin/client/jvm.dll this is the problem ... now in the path:jdk/jre/bin/client/ojvm has a file with the same name if you copy and paste this file to the another path, now its works fine your Jdeveloper.
Jdeveloper use two files to jvm.dll to work one in the folder /client and other in /server copy the same file to the two locations for precaution
for me work fine thanks..."
I tried to do the same (Copy from client folder to server folder)
D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
COPIED THIS FILE TO
D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
Nada. So I reversed it (copied from server folder to client folder)
D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
COPIED THIS FILE TO
D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
Does not work. So I tried another solution stated at the same forum entry
"Well,
i solved the problem by this way :
<SQLDEVELOPER>/jdev/bin/ide.conf
In this file, change this line :
AddVMOption -Xmx512M
by
AddVMOption -Xmx256M
Now, the executable is lauching correctly. No more errors with Java Virtual Machine.
But is it a good thing to solve it like that ?"
But the ide.conf file is only at "D:\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf" which is for the SQL Developer and not the SQl Developer Data Modeler
Correct me if I am wrong but
JRE = Java Run Time Envoirment
JDK = Java Development Kit
And Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler needs JRE and not JDK. In any case I download JDK
jdk-6u14-javafx-1_2-windows-i586.exe (121,306 KB) and installed it but no succcess.
I tried every thing except completely re-install my whole PC.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cordially,
Jawad

• My SQL Developer is not working correctly! help

hello!!
My problem here is not like I can't live or work but it is REALLY annoying, see my SQL Developer is not taking any key different from letters and the space bar, I mean, if I use the enter key, doesn't change the line, if i use the backspace key doesn't erase if I use F5/F9 doesn't execute the query(s)!!!! and so the arrow keys don't work!!!
any ideas why is that happening? and if so howcan i fix it?

There is a well known but still unresolved bug causing this kind of behavior, if you are on SQL Developer 1.5.X you can work around the problem by loading default accelerators from:
Tools -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default
If you are on 2.1.X the preset can be loaded from
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Other Actions -> Load Keyboard
In 2.1 this problem has not been reported so far, so if you are in 1.5.X you may consider upgrading.

• Oracle SQL Developer does not browse Sybase's objects

I had installed and configured jtds-1.2.5.jar in Oracle SQL Developer for Sysbase connection. Oracle SQL Developer does not browse any objects. Why? Can you please provide a solution?

Hi,
Can you provide some more information into what you are experiencing.
What version of SQL Developer are you using?
Did you install the jtds jar under the
Tools > Preferences > Database > Third Party JDBC Driver
Is the Sybase tab available in the new connection dialog?
Did you select the default database in the connection dialog?
Can you run a query against the Sybase database from the SQL Developer worksheet?
Note that JTDS 1.2 is the only supported version. There maybe issues with other versions.
Regards,
Dermot.

• SQL Developer does not support Oracle 8i

Hi,
I was waiting a tool from Oracle like SQL Developer for a long time, finally it came, but I am a little disapointed, so Why SQL Developer does not support Oracle 8i? Other free tools like SQUIRREL can do it. I also have worked in previous projects using PL/SQL Developer and it works fine...Why a native Oracle tool can not do it?
I am in a project where we have to upgrade the Oracle database to a newer version, but I cannot have access to the old one...
I know there are some threads in this forum, and some people can work with 8i with no issues. Can anyone who works with SQL Developer and Oracle 8i please tell me how to do it?
Thanks,

That's what I thought, the issue is more commercial ($$$) than technical. Anyway...I downloaded the version 1.1 but now I am getting an ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION error. 00604. 00000 "error occurred at recursive SQL level %s".
Thanks,

• SQL Developer is not able to identify the Tnsnames.ora file

Hi,
I have installed the following in the laptop having Win XP:
1) Oracle 10gR2 Client software in the D: drive of laptop. Tnsnames.ora is located in this clients Network\Admin path. This client is used to access the databases on the other servers.
2) Oracle 10gR2 Database software in the E: drive of laptop. Right now there is not Tnsnames.ora file in this softwares Network\Admin path. This db software has been installed to create local databases in the laptop.
3) Oracle SQL Developer Version 2.1.1.64 is also installed in C: drive of laptop.
The problem which now I'm facing is that the SQL Developer is not able to identify the Tnsnames.ora file mentioned in the above point-1 which contains entries of databases on the different servers. Could you please help me out in solving this problem?
Thanks in advance.
MAK

I forget what version I was using at the time, but when I had an ORACLE_HOME defined for the environment and TNSNAMES file defined in SQL Developer (different one than was in ORACLE_HOME), that I would see results from both tns files. I don't know if that is still the case. I have since dropped my ORACLE_HOME environmental variable.

• Connection ... able to connect using sql developer, but not sqlplus or toad too

Hi folks, having this issue, with only one of my so many databases, what might be the reason and how to fix/correct this, please assist.
Able to connect using sql developer, but not sqlplus or toad too; sqlplus error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
thanks in advance.

SQLDEVELOPER works since it use JDBC Thin & does not use tnsnames.ora
ORA-12154 ALWAYS only occurs on SQL Client & no SQL*Net packets ever leave client system
ORA-12154 NEVER involves the listener, the database itself or anything on the DB Server.
ORA-12154 occurs when client requests a connection to some DB server system using some connection string.
TNS-03505 is thrown by tnsping & is same error as ORA-12154 thrown by sqlplus or others.
The lookup operation fails because the name provided can NOT be resolved to any remote DB.
The analogous operation would be when you wanted to call somebody, but could not find their name in any phonebook.
The most frequent cause for the ORA-12154  error is when the connection alias can not be found in tnsnames.ora.
The lookup operation of the alias can be impacted by the contents of the sqlnet.ora file; specifically DOMAIN entry.

• Developer does not start

Hi,
I had installed SQL-Developer on my laptop, connecting to a server and it was running OK.
Suddenly it hanged, windows was restating (without any interaction) and SQL-Developer was not startable anymore !!!
What's wrong ?
Heinz

BSOD?
If not a BSOD, do this and paste the results here:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/files/faqs.html#q2
If BSOD, I would suggest running a virus scan. I can't imagine what would cause a java application to kill windows. If that comes up empty, reinstall java..if that fails, reinstall windows.

• Query works in SQL Developer but not in Oracle APEX

The query below runs and produces the correct result in SQL Developer, but when I try to put it into a PL/SQL process in Apex I get the error shown. There is no semi-colon at the end of the query in APEX.
The error is:
ORA-06550: line 10, column 54: PL/SQL: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended ORA-06550: line 2, column 1: PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored ORA-06550: line 11, column 21: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "end-of-file" when expecting one of the following: ( begin case declare end exception exit for goto if loop mod null pragma raise return select update while with.
The query is:
SELECT *
FROM
(SELECT *
from T3_LEADS
WHERE
(SYSDATE - Last_Mailed_Date) > 60 OR Last_Mailed_Date is null
WHERE MARKET_ID = 'Salt_Lake_City' AND rownum <= 100

That is because when you run a SQL in SQL*Plus or SQLDeveloper the output is displayed on the screen, but in Apex you need to select those values into variables so you can do something with the data.
delcare
      v_emp_id    employee.emp_id%type;
begin
      select emp_id
        into v_emp_id
        from employee
      where lname = 'JOHNSON' and fname = 'BILLY';
-- Then do something with that data
      if v_emp_id between 1 and 10 then
      end if;
end;Probably a bad SQL for an example. For your SQL though, you are selecting * which you would be able to select into a rowtype variable, but you are probably going to start having problems like "Exact fetch returns more that one row" since your query will probably return more that one value. In those cases you want to use cursors, and loop through the data one record at a time. You can Google all of that.

• Why does the query work in SQL Developer, but not in APEX?

Hi, guys:
I have a silly question. I have a complicated query, and I tested it successfully with SQL developer, and result is correct. However, when I put it into APEX to generate a report, it always reports no data found. I also know the condition related to "other marks" select list in the where clause part causes this problem. It also looks strange: before I add this condition, everything works OK; after I add this condition, even I do not choose the "other marks" select list, other components do not work neither. I always got no data found result. Could anyone help me on this problem? You can also visit our developing site as http://lsg-solutions.com:8888/apex/f?p=206 to check the problem.
Thanks a lot

My suggestion would be to put some instrumentation into your query and see what values you are using.. Or even simpler take out ALL the where clauses you can until data starts to sho wup and then add them back in one at a time until you find the culprit..
My bet would be on any date comparisons you are doing between page items and database columns..
Thank you,

• SQL Developer will not come up.

I had SQL developer installed and working fine. Then I did something, not sure what, and now when I try to start SQL developer, it does not start. Something may flash. I still have all of my SQL developer files in the correct directories on my PC.
Do I need to re-install SQL Developer, or is there a quick fix for this?

You should provide a little more detail.
SQLDeveloper and java version to begin with, OS version would be nice too.
Besides i had a similar issue on SQLDeveloper 1.5.X with JDK 1.6.X, and it was related to the Look And Feel, the system would stop working when Windows Look and Feel was selected.
To restore this you need to manually remove the look and feel entry from a configuration file in the systemXXX directory unfortunately i dont remember the file name, to check you can backup and remove the whole system directory, it can be found under your user home in windows XP this is:
documents and settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\SQL Developer\system2.1.1.64.39\o.ide.11.1.1.2.36.55.30mind the Application Data folder is hidden.
