SQL Developer UI on Windows 7 is clunky

HI,
I have SQL developer on Winodws 7 and the screen refresh rate is really bad.
By this I mean have a lot of SQL in the SQL editor and scrolling up and down in the box the screen does not refresh cleanly. We use this as a development tool and it is stopping the roll out of Windows 7 to the development team.
Is there a work around to this or is anyone else experiencing this problem. ?
By the way Java version is
java version "1.6.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)
Any help appreciated.

Drawing issues are typically due to other soft and drivers. At least make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.
The latest JDK may also have improvements.
Generally, disabling Direct Draw in the \sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf avoids all there issues:
AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=trueHope that helps,
K.

  • SQL Developer / JDK On Windows Server 2008 64 bit R2

Does anyone have the recipe to fix the annoying message:  "Cannot find a J2SE installed at path:  C:\Program Files\Java\jre6"?  I get the same message, when trying to set up and run SQL Developer on a Windows 2008 server with SQL Developer 32 bit, Java 1.6 and Java 1.7 32 bit, and now trying with SQL Developer 64-bit with JDK 64 bit.  Thank-you.

SQL Developer requires a JDK, not a JRE.  When you are asked to select the path you need to into "C:\program files\jdk1.6.0_35\bin" (or whatever) rather the the jre6 directory.
If you are using SQLDeveloper 3.2, then you need to be using the latest JDK 1.6 release.  The bittage of the JDK should match your SQL Developer (and your oracle client if you are using one).

  • Can SQL Developer run in Windows ME?

    Hi people,
Does SQL Developer run in Windows ME? I got an error message saying the .exe is in an invalid format, and that it was improperly linked. If not, is there a version supported by Windows ME?
    Thanks in advance!

oracle.ide.boot.Launcher is in the ide/lib/ide-boot.jar. This is definitely included in the download.
    A couple of other things might be happening, so please provide the following;
output from running java -versionthe contents of your sqldeveloper.bat file.. which should be the following:
    java  -Xmx512M -Xverify:none -XX:JavaPriority10_To_OSPriority=10 -XX:JavaPriority9_To_OSPriority=9 -Doracle.ide.util.AddinPolicyUtils.OVERRIDE_FLAG=true -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=false -Dwindows.shell.font.languages= -Dide.conf="sqldeveloper.conf" -Dide.home.dir.name=.sqldeveloper  -classpath ..\..\ide\lib\ide-boot.jar;..\..\jdev\lib\xmleditor.jar;..\..\ide\lib\oicons.jar;..\..\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar;..\..\jlib\jewt4.jar;..\..\jlib\share.jar;..\..\sqldeveloper\lib\jle2.jar oracle.ide.boot.LauncherThanks,

  • How can I get SQL Developer working on Windows 7 64-bit

    Hi all,
I've followed the download instructions for SQL Developer v4 as per the download page (
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/sqldev-download-v4-1925679.html
    Install instructions: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/sqldev-install-windows-1969674.html
I've  installed SQL Developer requires JDK 7 (jdk-7u25-windows-x64.exe) - with no issues.
I've also downloaded and unziped to sqldeveloper-4.0.0.12.27-no-jre.zip to C:\Program Files\
SQL Developer successfully starts, but when I try to connect to a data source, I get the following error:
Status : Failure -Test failed: C:\Oracle11g\product\11.2.0\client_1\BIN\ocijdbc11.dll: Can't load IA 32-bit .dll on a AMD 64-bit platform.
can any tell me how I fix this issue........... I getting fed up using clunky toad

You're trying to use a 32 bit Oracle Client with 64 bit SQL Developer.
You're doing something in SQL Developer that's requiring us to load OCI - in your connection properties, use Network Alias instead of Connect Identifier for TNS, or make sure in your Advanced settings you don't have 'Use OCI/Thick driver' enabled.
Or, install a 64 bit copy of the Oracle Client and tell SQL Developer to use that home instead.

    Hi Gooddy,
I exported Cyrillic comment fine as UTF8 and my database is ALU32UTF8 is utf8 an option?
It is unclear where the corruption is.
-You have saved a package to the database with Cyrillic in it.
Can you retrieve the package on screen with no '????'? i..e is it successfully in the database?

  • Running SQL Developer as a Windows 7 App-V

    Hello,
Is anybody out there running SQL Developer as a Win7 virtualized application?
I've noticed a difference in behaviour with v3.0.04-34 between virtualized and non-virtualized app:
    App-V
    - error when SQL Developer starts. Log shows: "SEVERE     50     0     oracle.ide.IdeCore     Exception firing mainWindowOpened to oracle.dbtools.crest.fcp.DataModelerAddin$1@117e6b6"
    - Cannot save data modeler design. Everything looks ok, but it saves nothing. I'm using data modeler embedded inside SQL developer.
    Local Installation
    - no error in log.
    - data modeler design saving is ok
    Anybody experienced this?
    Kind Regards,
    Olivier.

  • SQL Developer on Windows trying to connect to M/F with RACF authentication

I am currently running the latest downloaded version of SQL Developer on a Windows XP client machine.
We have recently upgraded our z/os Oracle version to 10.2.0.3
I was advised to use the thin java client in SQL Developer by inputting the URL into the advanced window - jdbc:oracle:thin:user/******@ukmet-***:3010:***
This returns an ORA-28037 Cannot get session key for RACF authentication
If I however substitute oci for thin then I get a test successful but the subsequent attempt at a connection crashes SQL Developer.
Any ideas on how I get a stable connection greatly appreciated

The tns list might be empty due to the bug that it's only looking for lower case tns file names. This is a bug in 1.1 and has been addressed with the patch. Also in 1.1, there are some instance where the tns file is not picked up through the registry setting, you might need to set the PATH variable to address that. This too has been fixed in the patch.

I have Java 1.6 installed on that server (applet shows up under x86 control panels)
I can reproduce this on two different win 2003 x64 servers, but it works fine on a windows 2003 standard (32 bit)
Any idea how to fix this?

  • Explain plan results are different in SQL Developer than SQL Plus

    My Environment:
    SQL Developer 1.0.0.15.27
Platform where SQL Developer is running: Windows XP 2002 SP2
    Oracle Database and Client 9.2.0.7
    Optimizer_mode: FIRST_ROWS
I have the following SQL statement:
    SELECT a1.comp_id
    FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    WHERE :b2 = a0.temp_emp_code
    AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    AND a1.last_mdfy_date > :b1
When I run an Explain in SQL Developer I get the following access path (which is the one I really want):
SELECT STATEMENT                          TABLE ACCESS(BY INDEX ROWID) FEDLINK.AU_COMPANY          NESTED LOOPS                                   INDEX(RANGE SCAN)
    FEDLINK.UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY
              INDEX(RANGE SCAN) FEDLINK.PX1_COMPANY
However, when I execute the statement with sql_trace turned on and use tkprof to generate the actual access path, the statement executes as follows (which is WAY more expensive):
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Fetch 1 3.58 6.68 28136 29232 0 0
    total 3 3.58 6.69 28136 29232 0 0
Misses in library cache during parse: 1
    Optimizer goal: FIRST_ROWS
Parsing user id: 979 (FEDLINK) (recursive depth: 1)
    Rows Row Source Operation
    0 NESTED LOOPS
    0 TABLE ACCESS FULL AU_COMPANY
0 INDEX RANGE SCAN UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY (object id 49783)
Notice the FULL access of au_company.
I understand that SQL Developer has nothing to do with why the statement executed the way it did, but why is the Explain in SQL Developer different than the actual execution plan?
Added note....when I run the explain in SQL Plus it is the same as the actual execution. Here is the explain from SQL Plus:
    explain plan for SELECT a1.comp_id
    FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    WHERE '1' = a0.temp_emp_code
    AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    AND a1.last_mdfy_date > '01-MAY-2006';
    PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 2 | 76 | 2597 |
    | 1 | NESTED LOOPS | | 2 | 76 | 2597 |
    | 2 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | AU_COMPANY | 2 | 42 | 2595 |
    | 3 | INDEX RANGE SCAN | UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY | 1 | 17 | 2
    Thanks,
    Brenda

The explain is different (full scan of au_company in SQL Plus / index access in SQL Developer) even when I use variables in SQL Plus. Here is the output for SQL Plus using variables instead of literals:
    SQL> variable b1 varchar2
    SQL> variable b2 char
SQL> explain plan for SELECT a1.comp_id
    2 FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    3 WHERE :b2 = a0.temp_emp_code
    4 AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    5 AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    6 AND a1.last_mdfy_date > :b1
    7 /
    Explained.
    PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 3184 | 118K| 2995 |
    | 1 | HASH JOIN | | 3184 | 118K| 2995 |
    | 2 | INDEX RANGE SCAN | UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY | 3187 | 54179 | 3 |
    | 3 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | AU_COMPANY | 24009 | 492K| 2983 |
Any other ideas? They should be the same.
    Brenda

  • SQL Developer crashing when opening or testing a connection

SQL Developer closes abruptly when opening or testing a connection.
    Here's what I do.
    Open SQL Developer.
    Create a connection:
    Connection Name: [some string]
    Username: [username]
    Password: [password]
    Save password: checked
    Oracle tab:
    Connection type: TNS
    Connect Identifier: somedatabasename
Then I click on "Test" and the application immediately quits. No error messages. The app does the same thing if I save the connection and try to expand its node on the list of connections.
Mind you, if I use sqlplus like so:
    [username]/[password]@somedatabasename
    It connects just fine.
I captured the output from the command console after SQL Developer crashed:

    @Jim:
Thanks for your suggestion. After several hours of experimenting, I've managed to fix my problem by copying the ojdbc6.jar from my ODAC installation and replacing the one in [sqldeveloper root]\jdbc\lib

  • Tnsnames.ora file does not seem to load in SQL Developer

I've really tried my best to figure this out on my own ... through the Help, this forum, and Internet in general. I apoligize in advance for having to ask this, since I'm sure this is a common issue. This particular form entry was really close:
Database Connections will not load tnsnames.ora
But, I just can seem to figure out why, or where entries from my tnsnames.ora file are loading into SQL Developer.
    - I have the TNS_ADMIN system environment variable defined to the directory where tnsnames.ora is stored - C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
    - I do not see a TNS tab as the forum entry above indicates anywhere in SQL Developer - This may be my problem.
It seems that this issue could be cleared up with better directions on how to import tnsnames.ora entries into SQL Developer. Is there any specific direction on how to get your tnsnames.ora file setup correctly with SQL Developer running on Windows XP - Besides the Help which mentions the setup of TNS_ADMIN, but doesn't really tell you what the expected result is, or where the entries will be, or how to verify this is working?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Using Windows XP/Vista...
After testing in our environment, it appears that SQL Developer 1.5.1 (5440) does in fact ignore the TNS_ADMIN environment variable and ONLY looks in the Oracle Home directory (network/admin). We define a central network location for our tnsnames file and have the tns_admin setup to point there instead of locally for our users.
When selecting to add a new connection (in 1.5.1, it works in previously releases... meaning 1.2.something) and selecting TNS, the drop-down remains empty. However, if I exit SQL Developer and then copy the tnsnames file to the local network/admin directory I can then re-launch SQL Developer and the drop-down is populated. Exiting SQL Developer again, deleting the local copy of tnsnames, and then launching SQL Developer yet again results in the drop-down being empty.
All other Oracle-related applications function as expected (as they have for years) using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.
    Any suggestions/ideas?

  • New to Oracle SQL Developer

Getting the followung error, which I assume is a privs error, when using debugger:
Executing PL/SQL: ALTER SESSION SET PLSQL_DEBUG=TRUE
    Executing PL/SQL: CALL DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP.CONNECT_TCP( '10.200.10.79', '3824' )
ORA-30683: failure establishing connection to debugger
    ORA-12535: TNS:operation timed out
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP", line 68
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    Process exited.
    Please advise.
    Thank u

I just got this working yesterday. I'm using SQL Developer on my Windows XP box. When I started the Remote Debugger I was prompted for a Port and Local Address. I accepted the default of port 4000 and entered my PC's IP Address as the Local Address. If you're also on a Window's box you get this address by going to the command line and typing "ipconfig".
When your DBA is talking about the Oracle listener being on port 1521 he's talking about the Oracle server having a process on it listening for outside processes that want to connect to the database. I'm guessing that your DBA doesn't understand what you're trying to accomplish. In your case starting the Remote Debugger is creating a listener on your development box which listens for something like ApEx to connect to it. If the bottom left of my SQL Developer I see a little satellite icon that says Debug Listener (Port=4000 Timeout=0 Local address=xx.xx.xx.xx). This lets me know that the Remote Debugger is waiting for a connection.
    Your call...
CALL DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP.CONNECT_TCP('remotedb','1521')should be connecting to the box that you're running SQL Developer on, not your Oracle database server. It's values should match those that you set when you started the Remote Debugger.
I followed the tutorial found at:

  • SQL Developer, UTF8 Oracle DB, extended ascii characters appear as blocks

I have this value stored on the database:
    (Gestion Económica o Facturaci
Notice the second word has an extended ascii character in it. When I use SQL Developer on my windows machine to view the data, I get a box in place of the o, kinda like this:
    (Gestion Econmica o Facturaci
If I log on to the AIX server where the oracle database in question is and run sqlplus from there, I see things properly. I also managed to regedit oracle home to get sql plus on my windows machine to display this properly. I still cannot get sql developer to work though...
    Details about sql developer:
    font: arial Unicode MS
    environment encoding: UTF-8
    NLS Lang: American
    NLS Territory: America
    windows regional options:
    English (United States)
    Location: United States
    Database NLS settings:
    NLS_LANGUAGE     AMERICAN
    NLS_TERRITORY     AMERICA
    NLS_CURRENCY     $
    NLS_ISO_CURRENCY     AMERICA
    NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS     .,
    NLS_CALENDAR     GREGORIAN
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT     mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss
    NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE     AMERICAN
    NLS_CHARACTERSET     UTF8
    NLS_SORT     BINARY
    NLS_TIME_FORMAT     HH.MI.SSXFF AM
    NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT     DD-MON-RR HH.MI.SSXFF AM
    NLS_TIME_TZ_FORMAT     HH.MI.SSXFF AM TZR
    NLS_TIMESTAMP_TZ_FORMAT     DD-MON-RR HH.MI.SSXFF AM TZR
    NLS_DUAL_CURRENCY     $
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET     AL16UTF16
    NLS_COMP     BINARY
    NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS     BYTE
    NLS_NCHAR_CONV_EXCP     FALSE
Any ideas on how I can fix this. I'd rather NOT log onto the server to run queries.... thanks in advance for your thoughts!

This problem is quite strange in that when I've been able to manually set American_america.utf8, things work.Sorry to say, but it seems you may have an incorrect setup.
In general, you should set char set part of NLS_LANG to let Oracle know the code page used by the client. With win-1252, NLS_LANG should include .WE8MSWIN1252.
The display from sqlplus was "lying", due to incorrectly stored data coupled by incorrect nls_lang setting (char set part). The pass-through or gigo scenario can be dangerous this way. Search the Globalization forum for the term 'pass-through' for previous discussions on the theme.
The setting on AIX servers may be incorrect as well, but it depends how you use it (e.g. for database export or data load with utf-8 encoded files it may be correct).
The output of the query you recommended looks odd to me:
    (Gestion Econmica o Facturaci     Typ=1 Len=30 CharacterSet=UTF8:
28,47,65,73,74,69,6f,6e,20,45,63,6f,6e,f3,6d,69,63,61,20,6f,20,46,61,63,74,75,72,61,63,69;This is the telling part. The 0xF3 is not legal in UTF8. Actually, the code units for ó, U+00F3 Latin small letter o with acute, are C3 B3. So instead of f3 you should have expected c3,b3 from the dump output.
    >
So it looks like what's under the covers is correct, but I'm still not seeing the correct character in sql developer. The opposite is true. Data is incorrectly stored and SQL Developer is correctly showing you this. Sqlplus is not the best tool in Unicode environments, SQL Developer is better.
    >
ACP according to my windows registry is 1252. OEMCP is 437Also, if you use database clients in console mode (such as sqlplus), NLS_LANG should include .US8PC437 to properly indicate that code page in use is 437.
