SQL licensing - server+cal on an internal website

Hi.
We have a internal web site connected to a SQL server. The website requires a login to access information. It's forms based so the website it self are configured for anonymous access.
I know that a SQL server can be licensed as core or server + cal. And I know that if using server+cal every user (or device) accessing a web page will require a CAL.
However what is the definition of a user?
It's an internal website where 500 users could potentially open the login page, but where only 15 named users can actually login due to a user database on the SQL server.
But some generic information (company information ++) on the login page are fetched from the database.
Trying to log in with a false user/password would also generate a SQL query to verify the user.
Will these actions be enough to qualify as a user?
Will a server + cal model with 15 cal cover this scenario? Or will Microsoft count all users that could potentially open the login page?

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards
    Matthias

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • How to specify RD USER cal for particular session host server on a licensing server.

    Hello,
I have 25 user cal license which I want to deploy to my 5 session host servers (5 user cal for each host)
I got 1 licensing server, where I have installed these licenses and pointed all other servers to it.
but I dont see any option to reserve 5 for each host. (4 win  2008R2, 1 win 2003 separate to each other no session host)
    Thanks

I would always have two licence servers for resilience.

  • Permanently Lost RD License Server - Regain Access to CALs

A RDS License server running Windows Server 2012 used to have two license packs installed (50 user CALs and 50 device CALs). The server was running in a Hyper-V virtual machine and is currently no longer available due to a human error, i.e. the VHD has been
lost. We installed a new RDS License server and activated it. Now I want to install the two license packs on the new server but as they have already been used, this is not possible.
I called the Microsoft Clearinghouse and opened a support request. They requested the License Server ID of the old server. I explained that I do not have access to this ID. Microsoft states that without the ID they cannot deactivate the old server and
release the license packs. Is this true? Is it possible to find this ID somewhere in Active Directory? Or is it only accessible through the Properties menu in Remote Desktop Licensing Manager? Overall, can I regain access to these CALs without the old server's
ID or they have been lost forever?

    Hi,
If the server is destroyed I do not know of any way to retrieve the old license server id.  As long as you have the authorization numbers, license numbers, agreement numbers, paperwork, emails, etc. for the original licenses there is no problem.
You provide the information about the original licenses and explain to the Clearinghouse that the old licensing server has catastrophically failed and they will re-issue the licenses.

  • Server CAL License for SAP Server

    Hi
Do we need Windows Server CAL for SAP Server, as we have Server 2008 R2 for our SAP Server.
    Please guide.
    Regards
    Ajay Goel

    Hi Wee,
By definition every device connecting to a Windows server needs a CAL. However, neither the OS nor the SAP system "counts" them.
Depending on which kind of clients you have (Windows XP/Vista OEM, Volume licenses etc.) you have a CAL included.
So based on SAP users created and other users required in your landscape , you may procure respective CALS.
    Hope this helps.

  • RDP License Server (Device Based CALs) is not issuing licenses to Devices.

    Hello,
My RDP license server is not issuing licenses at all. Here are my environment details:
    This is workgroup environment
RDP license is Device based CALs and is installed on Windows 2012
RD Session host server is Windows 2008R2.
Full communication is allowed both ways between license server and RD session host server.
Windows firewall is turned off on both license server as well as on RD session host server.
The Local Administrator’s password on license server as well as on RD session host server is same.
Now, on RD session host, when I run tlsbln.exe manually, it pops up the usual xxx days left balloon warning.
However when I run the License diagnostic utility under RD session host Snap-in, the utility connects to the license server fine and shows me the stats. However, in these stats, it show installed licenses are 20 and available license also as 20.
On the License server, under License server snap-in, My license server also shows that installed licenses are 20 and available are also 20.
This is not right. The installed should show 20 but the available license should show 19 as my desktop should have consumed one license.
I had 2 more laptops connecting fine to the RD session host sever and still the available licenses number was still 20.
Besides, on license server under the license manager snap-in, it did not mention any device names connected. Meaning, it is not aware of it at all.
Could you please help me understand what am I missing here. Why my license server is not issuing licenses?
    Thanks.

    Hello TP.
Unfortunately, there are no footprints at all. I have already checked the Even
viewer logs on RD session host server as well as the License server. No relevant events are logged.
Also, I have tried with numerous new instances (This whole set-up is on Amazon Web Services). So no, this is the only license server and the RD session hosts do not have any existing license server lurking
    around.
I know that this DOES work and I made is work in the past.
However, Our license server got infected and hence I had to crate a new one and now I am facing with this problem.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Migrate Windows Server 2008 RD TS/RDS Per Device CALs from a 2008 r2 RD License server to a 2012 RD License server

I would like to migrate my 2008 r2 CALs from current Server 2008 r2 to a Server 2012 RD License server.  Will the Migrate licenses Wizard in 2008 r2 Licensing server work for this or is there another process that I will have to use?

I have a 2008 license server with 2008 licenses that I need to migrate to 2012 servers and also provide some kind of fault tolerance in case one license server goes down.  I want to split the licenses since we can't have the same number of licenses
on both servers.  Do you know if the existing licenses can be split during the migration and be placed on two different windows 2012 license server as per Microsoft best practice?

  • VMWare vCenter Server SQL Licensing

I understand fully the difference between SQL user and core licensing. Though I'm not sure how to apply SQL licensing to VMWare vCenter server.
vCenter server is a management utility for VMWare that requires SQL. I have 20 users log into vCenter to make VM changes.
The application logs server events to SQL. The VM settings/files themself that end users log into are stored on disk.
Servers or their settings do not use SQL. The server that monitors the environment is what writes to SQL.
Can I get away with just buying 20 user licenses for the 20 that log into the vCenter server or do I need to license every user that access servers that are on VMWare?

  • SQL Licensing Requirement for E-Commerce

    Hi Experts,
Does anyone know the SQL licensing requirements for E-Commerce/Web CRM components?  Is it within Microsoft licensing guidelines to setup just a single user CAL for all users on the website, or do we need multiple user CALS or a Processor CAL?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Aaron

    Hi AAron,
You will need a SQL CPU License for the webserver or indeed if you plan to use a single server.

  • How many Sql licenses do i need

    hi ,
With one sql license how many users can connect concorrently to SAP Business One.If there are more than 50 SBO users how many sql licenses do i need to take?
    Thanks
    OmPrakash.

    Hi Om,
Generally if we install a SQL Server licensed version by default we get 5 user liceses, so i guess u need more no of CAL (Client Access Licenses) and generally 1 CAL would cost u around 3000-5000.
But when ur talking abt 50 users i suggest u go for the SQL Processor based license which will be cheaper.

  • SQL Licensing for Enterprise environment

    Hi Guys,
currently we are planing our possible ways to migrate to Lync2013. Due to our Microsoft-EA we already own Lync Enterprise CALs and 3 Lync Server.
Now we have some reallly important questions on the Backend SQL issue:
after all we got confilicting statements from our MS-Licensing Partner an some Consultants.
    1. ) it looks like, that Microsoft does not support an "activ/activ"-SQL Cluster even if LYNC gets an own instance.
this is an unbelievable statemen in consideration of the face a customer already spent a lot of bucks for the SQL-Core-LICs.
2.) if we'll use a dedicated SQL Standard Edition we also need SQL-CALs in addition to the Lync-CALs for all users using LYNC. the LYNC Enterprise-CAL does not contain the right to access the SQL-host. otherwise we need SQL-corelicenses which are ridiculous
    expensive.
Is there someone who solved this issue for an supported environment.
    regards
    Heiko

    Hi,
    First let's clarify some points
1- There is no requirements for SQL CAL licensing For Lync, disregarding the SQL version that you are using ( standard/Enterprise), why ? because :
Lync Users doesn't directly access the SQL backend
and also these licences are already covered by the Lync Server License that you already purchased.
2- The only way to have an Active/Active SOL Cluster, is by configuring Always On availability Features and indeed Lync server 2013 doesn't support these features.
3- When it comes to SQL licensing options the only the SQL Standard edition has Sever/CAL or Per core Licensing option. Where the SQL Enterprise Edition can only be licensed with the Per-core option.
4- Lync Server 2013 support SQL Mirroring or SQL failover cluster as database high availability options. I both cases the following is applicable:
Only active SQL instances requires licenses
dedicated SQL instances can be hosted on Servers which are part of always on availability groups or Failover Cluster

  • WSUS on a RD license server?

Is it safe to co-locate WSUS on a Remote Desk License Server / Connection Broker?
This is from the release notes on WSUS 3.0:
WSUS 3.0 is not supported on servers running Terminal Services
Although WSUS 3.0 may still run on servers running Terminal Services, doing so is not supported or recommended. WSUS 3.0 will not run on a server running Terminal Services in configurations
using remote SQL Server implementations. Because all remote custom actions (including installation) on a Terminal Server license server will be run as the system account, and the server's system account may not have permissions on the remote SQL Server, the
    installation may fail.
I know it's not supported to install WSUS on a server with the RDSH role but this is server is only acting as a License Server and Connection Broker.  Session Host role is not installed.  I'll also be using the internal Windows Database so I don't'
think the remote SQL server issues apply here.

Avoid unsupported configuration. No one will help you if you use unsupported system.
Try to use another way how to install WSUS. Consider virtualization.
    Regards
    Milos
I'm not sure that it would be unsupported.  Terminal Services is a very broad term.  I'm thinking that they don't want you to install it on a server that acts as a terminal server or RDSH.  The server in question is only a broker/licensing server.

  • SQL 2012 Device CALS

In Microsoft's SQL Server 2012 Licensing Reference Guide, it states on page 9 that for the SERVER+CAL Licensing Model:  Note: Devices not operated by humans require device CALS, even when connecting to SQL Server indirectly.   What types
of devices would this include ?  We have devices that are monitored in an automated environment and report back data that is then stored in a SQL Standard database.  Would these devices need CALs?  They are not operated by humans but our reseller
states that device CALs are not required.  Who should we trust for proper licensing of these devices ?  The SQL Eula does not make reference to this device requirement like the Licensing Reference Guide does?  Confused?

These are the Licensing Specialist answers:
    Device CALs are intended
for the clients/endpoints accessing the Windows Server.
You must assign each CAL to a user or device, as appropriate.
    The general requirement
is, any User or Device that accesses the server software, either directly or indirectly, requires a CAL.
Depending on the product and functionality being accessed, additive CALsmay
    be required as well.
However, the question of who or what needs a CAL
    varies by product.

  • Server 2012 - Problem with multiple instances of RDS looking to the same license server. Server Pools requiring the wrong servers.

    Hi All,
I have two domains, prod.local and test.local.  On prod.local, I have a license server living on the connection broker.  I have created a two way trust between the domains so that the RDS instance on test.local can use the license server on prod.local.
When I first setup the RDS instance on test.local and point it to use the license server on prod.local everything appears to work, all servers recognize the license server.
However when I log off and back on, and click the RDS dashboard in test.local, the Remote Desktop Services overview states I need to add every server from prod.local to the server pool.  This is bothersome because the Remote Desktop Services on test.local
is still functioning, but I am no longer able to manage it.  When I add the servers from prod.local to the server pool I am displayed the setup for prod.local instead of test.local
Is there a way around this?  Can I use the same RDS license server key multiple times?
tldr: Using a different domain's license server causes my RDS instance in Server Manager to display the wrong RDS farm.

    Hi Nathan,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Please check the required ports must be opened on firewall.
    - To issue RDS Per User CALs to users in other domains, there must be a two-way trust between the domains, and the license server must be a member of the Terminal Server License Servers group in those domains.
    - To restrict the issuance of RDS CALs, you can add RDS Host Servers into Terminal Server Computers group on RDS Licensing servers.
    - Configure RDS licensing server on all RDS Host Servers in each domain/forest. You can do it through RDS host configuration snap-in or through a group policy.
    - Add administrators group of each domain/forest in the local administrators of RDS licensing server. This way, you’ll not get a prompt to enter your credentials when you’ll open RDS host configuration snap-ins in trusted domains/forests.
