SQL Management Studio -- Windows open off-screen!
I used to have three monitors hooked up to this computer, now I only have two. Most applications don't have any problem with this, except SQL Management Studio which keeps opening windows off the right-hand side of the screen which are impossible to move back on-screen! All I can do is right-click the window in the taskbar, then choose "maximize" to temporarily work with the window. (I don't want the window maximized, but that's the only way to make it visible!) Import/Export data wizard window does this, as does the "add new users to DB" window.
How do I reset window locations in SQL Management Studio? This is getting extremely annoying. And please, please fix this bug! It's the year 2007, your program should be able to cope with multiple monitors! (Imagine how many laptop users who hot-swap monitors all the time are running into this.)
Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry if I gave the immpression that you couldn't move your screen around - and I did look into the bug. I would never knowingly lie to anyone. Once again, I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Microsoft has looked into the bug, and in fact, we've done a lot of work on the mulitple monitor support in SQL Server 2008, as I mentioned in my post. You should see an improvement there.

Your last reply on this thread was telling me that, and I quote: "SSMS has no notion of monitors - it just uses whatever Windows says are there. If you will remove the monitor from the video card settings then SSMS will not show the screens on something that does not exist." Which is incorrect, as my screenshot in the next post proved. Normally when people make a claim, and it's refuted, they respond in some fashion.
The annoyance is that it took a full year (and an irate post from me) for you to respond to that screenshot, and it still seems like you're unclear about the issue. It has nothing at all to do with "I can't move my screen around". Let's review the repro instructions one more time:
1) Start with a computer running Windows XP Pro and three monitors plugged in, arranged in a horizontal line. The center monitor is the default.
2) Open SSMS. Maximize it in the left-most monitor.
3) In the Object Browser, select a database, expand "Security", expand "Users", then right-click in the list and select "New User"
4) Move the New User window to the right-most monitor and maximize it.
5) Close SSMS, then re-open it and bring up the New User window again. Notice that SSMS saves the window position so that it continues to open on the right-most monitor. (This is good!)
6) Now unplug the right-most monitor and restart the computer. Go to the Monitors property sheet to ensure that there are only two monitors listed, and that the right-most (of the two) is still the default monitor.
7) Open SSMS, then bring up the New User window once more. Notice that the New User window now opens off-screen.
The irony is that this bug doesn't even apply to me anymore as, after about 6 months, I got my third monitor back. But for those 6 months, I was getting this behavior MANY TIMES A DAY, driving me completely and utterly furious and crazy each time, because it's such a stupid and moronic and easy-to-fix bug. I don't understand how your QA process could possibly have missed windows opening off-screen.
(Like you suggested, if SSMS actually ensured that windows opened on monitors that actually exist, this whole thing would be a non-issue.)
I don't know what you mean by "can't move my screen around," as this has nothing to do with moving or repositioning screens. It has to do with a window that opens off-screen, so that it's impossible to use the window without doing one of the ugly hacks outlined in this thread.
I'm glad SQL Server 2008 has "lots of work on multiple monitor support" and I'd be extremely happy if it did what you <i>claimed</i> SSMS 2005 did a year ago.
Sorry for the tone. It's so upsetting to me that bugs related to multi-monitor support could exist in a product in use in 2005, after a full decade of Windows supporting multiple-monitors. Isn't this stuff perfected by now? Doesn't Microsoft have any kind of minimal quality control process, and why isn't this on it? It's hard to express how frustrating this is, both the bug and the lack of response to it.

Browser window opening off screen

It used to be that when I clicked "enlarge" under the item picture, on items that offer this feature, the new window opened to the left of the screen, which is useful. Now, however, only the left-hand edge of the new window with the enlarged image is visible on the right hand side of my screen and I have to pull it across every time, which gets annoying. I think this started after I created two windows in eBay, one of which was on the right of my screen. Now it seems that the enlarged image window always opens where the second of the two eBay windows was located.
I look forward to your suggestions.
Thanks, SimonOk, I figured it out, I clicked "i don't have device available" and it let me log in to my account.

Using 3 screens, and if I create a new window from within a FF window located in one of these screens (happens to be the one positioned on the left) then the new window opens offscreen - no way to see or recover it.
(New window opens normally if initiated from a FF window in either of the other two screens.)You should have picked up 10.6 DVD to get BC 3.x for Windows 7 support.
Your workstation needs graphic driver (ATI? Nvidia?) so just get the July drivers from them.
You also use RealTek audio so add that to your list of things that need to be installed yourself.
As for 4.0, no idea what "improved compatibility and performance" under the hood and the marketing.

SQL 2012 SP2 - Cannot open Maintenance Plans in SQL Management Studio
Hello...
We have a number of SQL 2012 SP2 instances running on Server 2012 R2 where we cannot open any Maintenance Plans via the SQL Management Studio.
At times we've received an error message screen when attempting to open the Plan, but most of the time just nothing happens when you try to open the Plan.
I cannot get any of them to display the error now to even provide more information there.
This happens even after a reboot and/or restarting SQL server.
Everything else seems to be working and we can examine the individual pieces under the SQL Server Agent -> Jobs, but we cannot open the Maintenance Plan itself.
We can even create new Plans via the "Maintenance Plan Wizard" but not from "New Maintenance Plan" and once a Plan exists, we can't open it.
As a test, I tried connecting from a SQL 2008 R2 server and am able to open the plans, so it appears to be a SQL 2012 Management Studio issue rather than the Plans.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you...Hello,
Once you modify and save a maintenance plan with a greater version of SSMS (let’s say SSMS 2014) you cannot modify it again
with an earlier version of SSMS again ( SSMS 2012 or earlier). That may be a possibility.
If you did not modify the maintenance plan with SSMS 2014, then try to repair SQL Server 2012, apply the latest service
pack (SP2), or try to uninstall only SSMS and reinstall it again.
If you have Visual Studio installed, please apply the latest update.
Hope this helps.

Save/Open Window Goes Off Screen Bug
There's this one particular bug I've been having ever since I upgraded from OS X Maverick to Yosemite. Whenever I open/save a file, whether it's on the web browser or Finder, the open/save window goes off screen. I can still see the window but the bottom portion where you normally have the open, save, new folder and cancel buttons - is all the way at the bottom of the screen.
I can't scale it to its proper size because the window is buried beneath the Docks. The only way to rescale it is to click the arrow key button near the Save As drop down list but sometimes, this button is not there.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any idea how to fix it?Hello Steve:
It definitely sounds like the hot corner "all windows" is enabled. There is a preference file that needs to be trashed, but I cannot figure out which one (no help to you).
Be sure that none of the hot corners are enabled and then restart.
You might also try resetting PRAM (although I do not think that will do anything).

Choppy/blurry text in SQL Management Studio Scripts
Hi All I hope someone can help.
For some reason my SQL Management Studio scripting window looks blurry; there seems to be a lot of missing pixels.
I've restarted my machine, tried reset the font options but still can't see why this has started suddenly looking like this.
I would add a screen shot but this forum won't allow me to do this yet.Ok, has your machine been updated recently?
When there is an issue with rendering it tends to be a performance issue and a reboot of your machine would normally fix this; however as you have done this then it is something else that is causing the issue.
Check the AV settings in case SSMS is constantly being scanned. Check any recent updates in case these are impacting SSMS. Has something else been recently installed that could be impacting performance? If you have a desktop support
team then engage with them as they will probably have a better understanding of your machine.
How many versions of SQL Server are on your machine? Again older versions can cause an issue if you're using something like Version 7 or 2000 on a recent Windows OS.
Please click "Mark As Answer" if my post helped. Tony C. -
Don't have permission to do anything in SQL Management Studio 2012
I have installed SQL Server 2012 with SQL Management Studio on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1. When I log into Studio, it won't let me do anything other than view. I am using Windows Authentication and am logged in as a domain user with local admin
rights. I installed SQL with this same account. If I try to use SQL Authentication, I can't figure out the default password for "sa". Any ideas as to how to get access to this so I can create new databases from within Studio?I am using express. Should I try developer instead? I should mention that I also have whatever version of SQL Server Express came with my Visual Studio 2013 when I installed it.
Express should work fine.
When you install SQL Server, there is a screen where you are supposed to enter a Windows user that is to have sysadmin permissions. There is a button "Add Current User" which is convenient.
On the same screen you can also specify that you want to have SQL Server authentication enabled, and in this case you must specify the sa password. That is, there is no default password.
Now, I don't install Express Edition very often, but I seem to recall that the Express install by default skips some of the screens unless you press an "Advanced" button along the way. The screen I'm talking about may be one them. But in
that case, I would expect the user under which you ran the install to be added as sysadmin.

How to delete the line for 300SAP* in table USR02 in SQL Management studio
Hello
I used to delete the line for 300SAP* in table USR02 in SQL Enterprise Manager. After I could log on with pass.
I wander how to delete it in SQL Management studio. When I expand tdatabase it takes so long time and it is uncontrollableHello,
you have to delete the row by a sql statement.
Open a new query and run a script like this:
use <Your SID DB> -- e.g. use PRD
setuser 'your sid in lowercase' --- e.g. setuser 'prd'
delete from USR02 where MANDT = '300' and BNAME = 'sap*'

Run a complete backup before deleting data manually.

SQL Management Studio Installation Problems
My hard drive crash and I'm forced to use Windows 8 on my laptop for a while. Visual Studio 2012 installed okay but I cannot get the SQL Management Studio to install.
I have SQL Management Studio 2005 CD's and I've also tried to download and install the 2008 version.
But no matter what I do I cannot get one to them to install and run. It always tells me I have compatibility problems.
I'm desperate. I need this to work.
Can someone please tell me how to get SQL Management Studio 2005 32 or 64 bit to run on on this Window 8 box?
Or any version of SQL Management Studio to install and run.
BTW, I've tried running in compatibility mode.FIrst of all, please notice that SSMS 2005 will probably not fit windows 8, but I am not sure about this (the SQL
Server 2005 do not fit). Please check this link before you wasted your time :-)
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0
"SQL Server 2005 (the release version and service packs) and earlier versions of SQL Server are not supported on Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, or Windows 8. You will receive a warning in the Action Center if Windows 8.1
or Windows 8 detects an instance of SQL Server 2005."
You can use any version from 2008 and above.
* If you are using 2008 express, then you must manually install Service Pack 3, after you install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. In any case we are not at that point since your issue is with the installation itself :-)
**** For our case *****
1. You did not post your errors log till this time :-(
You only gave us stories, and no facts
2. If you are using the free edition EXPRESS, then you probably be better with the new version SQL EXPRESS 2014.
* You are talking about the SSMS which is not the SQL Server, but just a client application. Do you have a server to connect to?
if not, then you probably wanted to install the SQL Server with the SSMS tool, no?
You can get the new version (no so new) 2014 here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299
There are several files to download there:
* SQLEXPRADV: include the SQL Server and all the extra tools (including the server, Express Tools, Reporting Services, and Full Text Search, and more), is my prefered option for all developers and people that learn and use the SQL Server locally.
* SqlLocalDB: This is a different version that is much better for developers in most cases which they need to store the database in the application, it came to replace the EXPRESS "user instance".
* SQLManagementStudio: this is only the SSMS without the server!
* SQLEXPRWT: this is the basic version which include the basic tools
* SQLEXPR: this is only the server (this is what people install on production in lot of cases, when they do not want any extra tools)
*** If you have option to use windows 8.1 instead of 8, then you will feel that it is easier. I have to say that I too don't like the windows 8/8.1/2012/2012r2 but the 8.1/2012r2 brought back some of the old features and are better.

Permissions disappearing from tables and views in SQL Management Studio
As a CRM person, I sometimes have to update the database to cope with custom reports that I have written. Usually, I will
Go into SQL Server Management Studio 2008
Open the database
Locate either the table or the view
Right click on permissions
Add in the role or user that's needed
Grant them Select permissions
This allows the report in CRM to access the database and this works.
The problem I have is that after a certain amount of time, the user or role will disappear from the permissions meaning that the report will not run. Sometimes, this can be as soon as a couple of days or it can be months. It happens on views more than tables
and, whilst it's not too difficult to put the permissions back, it is annoying for the users.
I don't use SQL Server Management Studio very regularly, only to write a few queries and set up these permissions so I'm not sure if there's anything else in there that might be doing this. All suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks.Sounds like some process is removing/resetting permissions periodically
if you are using enterprise edition you could try to catch this using auditing
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd392015%28v=sql.100%29.aspx
otherwise you would need some other custom tracing mechanism (SQL Trace, Extended Events, catching statements.. not fun)

Ms Sql Management Studio 2014 Express + Azure

Now I have the restricted access to my DB from ssms, but there (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlreleaseservices/archive/2014/12/18/sql-server-2014-management-studio-updated-support-for-the-latest-azure-sql-database-update-v12-preview.aspx) talks about the enhanced

But in the local database in the GUI
all the features are present
Hi AndrewG42,
I notice that you are using the latest version of SQL Azure database (13.0.15). I suspect there’s no update in SSMS 2014 for this version of SQL Azure database.
In other words, these features (select top 1000 rows, table designer, etc) are only going to be present with SSMS connecting to Azure v12 which version number is 12.0.2000.8.
Personally, regarding to above issue, I recommend you submit a feedback at
http://feedback.azure.com/forums/34192--general-feedback. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service provided.
