SQL*Plus Help system

i have Win2000 Pro with Oracle 8.1.7 installed and it seems to be working fine.
however, in SQL*Plus (both windoze and command line versions), if i type 'HELP' i get the error:
SP2-0171: HELP not accessible.
does this mean the help files weren't installed for some reason? or is it referring to my win2000 user security?
how can i install the help system for SQL*Plus? what files should i check for to see if it is already installed?
TIA...thanks... erick

I find the online help at http://tahiti.oracle.com/
very useful when I am connected to the internet.
The iSQL*Plus web interface has online HTML help related
to iSQL*Plus.
iSQL*Plus is available with Oracle 9.0.1 for Windows. Other platforms will be supported in future versions.

  • How to install SQL*Plus help facilities and demos.

    Hi, everyone
    It appears error message say "failure to login" during SQL*Plus
    part of the Oracle8 full installation. I knew that system want
    to install SQL*Plus help and demos through logining one of
    dba account(maybe system user account). However, due to
    password's reason, can not log in SQL*Plus, so installer can't
    execute named pupbld.sql script, result in SQL*Plus help and
    demos can not be installed.
    Now, I am intend to install these stuff lonely.
    Could anyone help me? thank a lot.

    Hi,
    The pupbld.sql isn't the correct script to create the help
    facility, it just creates product and user profile tables.
    The help script is at $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/help (run as
    system)
    cd $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/help
    sqlplus system/<password> @helptbl
    sqlldr system/<password> control=plushelp.ctl
    sqlldr system/<password> control=plshelp.ctl
    sqlldr system/<password> control=sqlhelp.ctl
    sqlplus system/<password> @helpindx
    I think it is necessary to run the pupbld.sql script, without
    this script everyone who logins in oracle with sqlplus will see
    an error message, but... Run the script again:
    $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/pupbld.sql
    Best regards,
    Ari

  • Installing Oracle 8i and Forms 6i Messes up SQL PLUS HELP PLEASE!!!

    I have Win2K, originally I had Oracle 8i (home was "orant"), and I was able to connect to oracle through SQL PLUS. Then I installed the Forms 6i (downloaded version from OTN) on separate home , and I couldn't invoke forms, so I copied tnsnames.ora from 8i to forms' directory, and I lost connection with oracle sqlplus.
    I then re-installed first forms on "orant" and then 8i on "ornat\ora8i" and I still cannot connect sqlplus. I have homeworks due, and cannot afford to go to lab late nights, so please help me!!!

    hI,
    I have the problem backward!
    I created a profile then assigned it to the user, then I launched the apps thr the browser, it worked prompting the message "...password will expire in 3 days..."
    Now I reassigned the Default profile back to the user which does not expire the password, launched the apps again it still prompted that password warning message! I even deleted the profile that was first created, still got the warning.
    I tried to do it alter user in SqlPlus but not able to connect to database using the same System account as Sysdba (used to connect in Enterprise Console successfully), received error :Insufficient Privileges.
    What is wrong ? Thanks.

  • Sql Plus Help! (the window remain open)

    I'm currently using sql plus to export data from oracle to text with spool command, in this way:
    sqlplus user/[email protected] @F:\pathtosql\query.sql (this line is in a bat file)
    where the file query.sql contain the spool comand
    spool F:\textfile.txt;
    set head on;
    set pagesize 0;
    set linesize 512;
    set trimspool on;
    set feedback off;
    set termout off;
    select field1, field2, ..., fieldn
    from table;
    spool off;
    exit;
    mi problem is when I run .bat (contining the sqlplus command) and for some reason the source database is not available the windows remain open requesting for a logon information, I want the windows close if are connection problem
    Can I do that with sqlplus
    Thanx

    Specify the -L command line option to SQL*Plus, i.e.:
    sqlplus -L username/password@db @blah.sql
    (this will prevent the second prompt for username/password if the initial login is unsuccessful for any reason, like an invalid password).

  • SQL*PLUS help to query tables

    Is it possible to query tables of other users from a dba account?
    My problem is that when i connect to sqlplus using:
    sqlplus system/manager@mymachine
    I can only see my tables... I cannot see the tables of other users of the same database... What is the correct syntax of doing it? (Is there a good newbie doc about sqlplus?)

    Yes.
    select owner, table_name from dba_tables;
    (for example)
    OWNER TABLE_NAME
    XYZ123 MYTABLE
    desc XYZ123.MYTABLE;
    select * from xyz123.mytable;
    If you get tired of prefixing the table name with the owner, you can do the following:
    alter session set current_schema=xyz123;
    select * from mytable;

    I personally don't like SQL Developer or TOAD, though perhaps I'm in a minority. I agree completely. Toad does a lot of things but many of are ill thought out, the most obvious is the default feature of displaying a result time after fetching the first screen of rows. This alone has led to hundreds of posting along the lines of, I have this query that returns 12 billion rows. In a stored procedure it takes days, but it completes in 12 milliseconds in TOAD?
    The last I looked SQL Developer had that typical Java sluggishness on a Windows box, and I am still not interested in whether that is a Windows or Java problem. I just know that if I have to use Windows I tend to choose applications that are not written in Java if possible.
    It also was unable to connect using OS authenticated accounts which effectively ruled it out as anything other than a toy as our development environment mandates it. I believe there may be a workaround, but there are always hints of waving a rubber chicken at it and frankly why bother at this stage.
    PL/SQL Developer is by far the best.

  • Connecting to SQL*PLUS

    Good afternoon. I have a strange issue when I try to connect to SQL*PLUS, Designer and Discoverer too, with an id other than SYSTEM or SYS. I have 10G database installed on my local PC, with the 10G client, Developer Suite with Discoverer and Designer. I connected in the command window with SYS to create the Designer repository and everything worked fine. I can CONNECT to SQL*PLUS to my local db with the SYSTEM id, but not with my own id. I can't connect to Designer repository with the REPOS_MANAGER id either. It looks as if it is trying to connect, but I get an hour glass and a NOT RESPONDING in the Windows task list. I have checked the id's by logging on to SQL*PLUS with SYSTEM id, and they are set up correctly. Any thoughts or suggestions? I can connect to my local database through GUI tools like TOAD or SQL*Tools using my own id. I would greatly appreciate any ideas you might have. Thanks. DLD

    Hi D Moran,
    You don't mention the platform and/or Oracle versions you work with, but generally speaking, did you check:
    - the tns service (windows) is started?
    - did you wait for a moment after the database service started, so that it had the time to "announce itself" to the tns service?
    - do you have only one tnsnames.ora file? if more then one: did you select the corresponding oracle home?
    etc...
    Maybe some of these checks help!
    Regards,
    Sabine

  • Logging into ORACLE 9I using SQL*PLUS.TNS Error

    I have installed Oracle 9i for windows and am trying to login using SQL*PLUS
    user: system
    pwd: manager
    Host String: BHURU
    It says TNS could resolve service name.
    I have all the services running in the admin monitor.
    Am I missing something? Please advise.

    Can you post your tnsnames.ora file contents and listener.ora contents here?
    There may be tons of things wrong with the error actually,
    ORA-12154:     TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Cause:     A connection to a database or other service was requested using a connect identifier, and the connect identifier specified could not be resolved into a connect descriptor using one of the naming methods configured. For example, if the type of connect identifier used was a net service name then the net service name could not be found in a naming method repository, or the repository could not be located or reached.
    Action:
    - If you are using local naming (TNSNAMES.ORA file):
    - Make sure that "TNSNAMES" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA)
    - Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists and is in the proper directory and is accessible.
    - Check that the net service name used as the connect identifier exists in the TNSNAMES.ORA file.
    - Make sure there are no syntax errors anywhere in the TNSNAMES.ORA file. Look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters. Errors in a TNSNAMES.ORA file may make it unusable.
    - If you are using directory naming:
    - Verify that "LDAP" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA).
    - Verify that the LDAP directory server is up and that it is accessible.
    - Verify that the net service name or database name used as the connect identifier is configured in the directory.
    - Verify that the default context being used is correct by specifying a fully qualified net service name or a full LDAP DN as the connect identifier
    - If you are using easy connect naming:
    - Verify that "EZCONNECT" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA).
    - Make sure the host, port and service name specified are correct.
    - Try enclosing the connect identifier in quote marks. See the Oracle Net Services Administrators Guide or the Oracle operating system specific guide for more information on naming.

  • Please Help, cant get 8i Enterprise working on my system...cant get into sql plus

    Hello,
    I am trying to get my oracle 8i working. I installed it, and it went ok, except two optional programs didnt work, though it was recommended to get them working, i didnt know how and just went on. Also some of the programs are not working either...which i dont understand since the software installed successfully.
    I am using 8i enterprise on my win2k system. I am not on a network and am using it only on my local machine. I CANNOT get into Sql Plus as it is asking me for a user/password/host string. i tried so many combinations. scott/tiger, system/manger, sys/system_change_on_install and various other things on this discussion board.
    Nothing is working for me and I have no idea whats wrong. I have used installed Oracle systems before and used to just login those systems as scott/tiger and no problems. This is the first time i have installed it from scratch and i havent been able to get into the system.
    Any help would GREATLY be appreciated. Thank you.

    the programs that do not work are:
    Database Configuration Assistant
    INTYPE File Assistant
    Net 8 Assistant
    Net 8 Configuration Assistant
    Net 8 Easy Config
    I click the programs and nothing happens. Not sure even if something is supposed to happen though.
    the error when i type in the pass/user is:
    ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error
    thank you for helping.
    samir.

  • Can I use username = system when I log into SQL plus?

    I am new to Oracle and SQL plus and I have some questions to ask?
    I managed to get SQLPlus working using  sqlplus system/password
    When I installed Oracle I created a database called ORCL and set a  password.  My question is when I am using SQL Plus is it OK
    to use username= system.  The problem is that I created 3 tables in this database but when I list the tables I get about 181 tables returned.
    It seems that I have  logged into the master database.
    In fact I just used the password I set when I  installed Oracle (not the @asi past)
    from:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E13212_01/wles/docs42/installadmin/database.html
    Configuring an Oracle Policy Database
    To configure an Oracle policy database, you must create the policy database, create a security role and a user, and grant the security role and user access.
    To configure a policy database, perform the following steps:
    Open a command window, run the Oracle SQLPlus utility, and login as user SYSTEM with the password you set for that user account when you installed the Oracle database software.
    sqlplus system/password@asi
    where: password is the password you set for the system account when you installed the database software and asi is the database instance name.
    The name of the database I set up when I installed Oracle was ORCL.
    I can set up a data source using WebLogic Server Administration Console using  the following data:
    Database name:             ORCL
    Host name:                      localhost
    Port:                                 1521
    Database USer Name:   System
    Password:                        the password I set when I installed Oracle
    This is different form the book I am using where the writer used the database name XE as in the following:
    Database name:             XE
    Host name:                      localhost
    Port:                                 1521
    Database USer Name:   OE
    Password:                        .......
    Confirm Password:        .......
    Anyways I managed to create some tables  using SQL script.  I assume these are in the ORCL database.
    SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM USER_TABLES  will list all the tables in the database.
    Apparently there are a lot more tables in this database (181 tables) than I thought.  I have only created  3 tables.
    Article
    Section
    Edition
    Is this how it should be?
    Also I am trying to create another table Catalog  but SQLPlus is not allowing me to do this!
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00955: name is already used by an existing object
    Next I create an EJB project using Eclipse (Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse).   Then
    I add a JPA (Java Persistence API) project facet.  In this I  specify the following:
    SID:                         ORCL
    Host:                       localhost
    Port Number:       1521
    User name:            System
    Password:               The password I set when I installed Oracle.
    Here there is a GUI called Select tables which gives a list of tables I assume the same list of table
    I had listed in DOS however there appears to be more tables here.
    Anyways,  I am just wondering am I on the correct path and would this Database I am using be the
    ORCL database.  Would all these tables be tables that are in the ORCL database?
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Brian.

  • Need help in sql plus

    i install in my computer the oracle9i
    my problem is that : i can login to sql plus
    althoge i was tring all the passwords that i know
    scott/tiger
    sys/change_on_install
    system/manager and the result is allways the same
    ora-12560 error
    how can i solve that problem?
    did i missed somthing during the installation?

    Thank you to EVERYONE!!
    I have been searching every possible forum to find out how to install/run SQL *Plus on a home computer without a server/network to work within.  As most just learning, I could not figure out how to get past the SQL Plus Username/Password/Host String logon.
    After much trial and error, I got through and I hope this helps a lot of people just starting out.
    I used 'SYSTEM' as my username and my password created on install.
    When installing I created a database and fixed the password so my default password was the password I created on install.
    As long as I had those two fields filled in, I could leave the Host String blank and I could still get into the SQL Plus workspace.
    Since I also created a database on install, I found that I could also use the name I gave the installed database (I didn't leave the default database name so I do not remember what the default name was, but I think the default password was 'manager' for those who were not tempted to change it).
    Worst case scenario if you forgot your database name given during install, you can do a search for all of your .ora files (usually in the drive you installed Oracle on). Open the tnsnames.ora file in Notepad and you can see which database names are available on your system. The path to my file was:
    D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    You want the SERVICE_NAME = 'databasename'
    I hope this reduced someone's stress...and thanks for all the helpful hints on these threads...they led me to the final outcome!!
    In the end, I tried a lot of other combinations for the username/host strings with plenty of errors. You would think this information would be on page one of every Oracle install!! Or maybe it is and I am just a bit slow. : )
    Thanks again to all that posted with this initial question (years ago)...
