SQL*Plus Raises: ORA-3113 End of file on communication channel

I have a Win2000 machine running Oracle client 8i, connecting to an HP-UX server running 9i RAC, with an unknown collection of switches/firewalls in between. Using SQL*Plus I can successfully connect and run queries. However, if I leave the session idle for some time, approximately 15 minutes (though this varies), the next query I execute hangs for a few seconds, then returns with ORA-3113.
I have enabled client-side tracing (ADMIN level). The following extract shows the point at which an error first occurs:

A google search returned one page that suggests the culprit here is the line:
ntt2err: soc 660 error - operation=5, ntresnt[0]=517, ntresnt[1]=54, ntresnt[2]=0
This apparently indicates that the network timed out, a sign of a busy network.
Can anyone:
a) Confirm this or otherwise;
b) Suggest how I may go about proving this to a corporate network operations team;
Cheers, Si.

I think the reason can be timeout on one of the firewalls. Network administrators
quite often configure following setting:
"Disconnect idle connection after 15 minutes" - I facedd this problem several
times.

  • Import failing with ORA 3113 end of file on communication channel error

    While doing a schema level import on oracle 9.2.0.6 enterprise edition db, i get IMP 00003 with ORA 3113 error.
    The import job fails particularly at one point where it tries to create a view with around 7000 lines.
    Now I tried to create this view manually by executing the sql statement and get the same error.
    As an another exercise when i pick up just a few lines say first 10 or 15 of the view definition, the view gets created in no time.
    So, is there any limitation with Oracle as to how many lines a view can hold or buffer space or something.
    Here is the sample code:
    create or replace view uix_kana_kanji_c_evw as
    select 'EFBC90' as kana_kanji_char from dual
    union select 'EFBC91' as kana_kanji_char from dual
    union select 'EFBC92' as kana_kanji_char from dual
    union select 'EFBC93' as kana_kanji_char from dual
    union select 'EFBC94' as kana_kanji_char from dual

    ORA-3113 is a generic error. The bad news is there are slightly less than a million combination of OS, platform, versions and events that might cause it to happen.
    The good news is there should be a message in the alert log whenever this occurs. If you're lucky there may be .TRC file as well (check udump directory as well as bdump). The contents of the file(s) should give you some guidance about what causes it to happen. If you still need help from us you'll need to post some concrete details for us to ponder.
    Good luck, APC

  • ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel while running utlrp.sql

    Hi All,
    I am getting ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel while running utlrp.sql.
    Actually I ran utlrp.sql before in my test database and terminated the session in middle after that when ever I am running utlrp.sql i am getting the above error.
    how to resolve the issue.
    Kiran

    Hi,
    Check as follows;
    select owner,object_name,object_type from dba_objects where object_name like
    'UTL%'The objects should only belong to SYS, if they do belong do some other user (example HR, etc). Drop objects belong to other users (not sys).
    Then connect as sys as sysdba and rerun the script utlrp.sql.
    You can also review Oracle Metalink Document: ORA-03113 Error When Executing Utlrp.sql: Doc ID: Note:413922.1

  • Ora 03113 end of file of communication channel leads to coredump using svrmgrl

    hi,
    I have a similar problem. I installed Redhat linux version7 and tried to install oracle 816 but while connecting to SVRMGRL> it gives an ora-03113 end-of-file of communication channel. There is no database in the system. The dbassist also fails with the same error. I tried reinstalling for five times with different options but in vain. I analyzed the core using file core and strings core|head -10 it gave the following
    Core:ELF 32-bit LSB core file of 'oracle'(signal 6) Intel 80386, version1
    for strings command
    Core
    tl@#
    core
    oracle
    oracleoracle(Description=(local=yes)(address=(protocol=beq)))
    core
    oracle
    rminal
    ffffff
    n?sh
    Whenever i try svrmgrl it raises the ora-03113 error and creates a oracle<defunct> process. I tried relinking the oracle executables. I also tried chaning various options with listener and tnsnames. But in vain. Could any one please help me on this problem.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Hari

    Hi,
    Looks like your archivelog space is exhausted. Increase the db_recovery_file_dest_size size and check.
    SQL>  show parameter db_recovery

    db_recovery_file_dest                string      /oracle/flash_recovery_area

  • ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel ERROR

    After applying Database patch 3095277 to my 9.2.0.1.0 installation
    in order to update it to 9.2.0.4.0,I'm getting ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    ERRORS when attempting various tasks. This is a local installation running on a Windows XP Workstation.
    I've even tried creating a new test database but the result is the same.
    The reason for moving up to 9.2.0.4.0 is so I can start using Advanced Queuing, which I understand had problems in earlier releases.
    However before the update I could at least create the JMS queue tables without ERROR whereas now I get the following errors when attempting to create a queue table in SQL Plus from within Enterprise Manager Console.
    SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Thu Sep 18 08:20:08 2003
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
    Connected.
    BEGIN SYS.DBMS_AQADM.CREATE_QUEUE_TABLE(Queue_table=> 'JMSQTBL',Queue_payload_type=>'SYS.AQ$_JMS_STREAM_MESSAGE',multiple_consumers=> false); END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    BEGIN SYS.DBMS_AQADM.CREATE_QUEUE(Queue_name=> 'JMSQUE',queue_table=> 'JMSQTBL'); END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE
    I would be grateful of any pointers as to how to resolve this problem.
    Regards
    Gary.

    Chris, Thanks for the suggestion,
    I took a look in the trace log and found the following entries that point to a ORA-00600 as you mentioned earlier.
    This is only a test database so there's no great loss if
    I have to re create it, but in saying that I did create a new test02 from scratch and had the same problem.
    Is it posible something went wrong when applying the 9.2.0.4.0 patch ?.
    Regards
    Gary.

  • ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel, Please help

    hello Seniors,
    i have strange situation, facing it for the first time.
    i m/s detail form and i am entering data. i successfully saved few records.
    i completed entering one more record and for a reason i left it unsaved.
    after lets say may be a minute or so, i got back to work and then tried to save the unsaved record
    displayed on screen. when i pressed save button i got error;
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    leaving the form as is with this error displayed, i notice that i can very well use the db at server level
    by running other sqls, meaning other resources are functioning. even i tried to open the same application again
    leaving the erroneous form as is, and tried to enter in another form , it communicated well and saved without any errors.
    also there is one more errro along with this, when i query; says "Unable to perform query"
    ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
    and when exit the current form it quits the entire application and kills that particular session,
    but the db is still up and running with no errors.
    The Tnsping <hostname> is responding.
    i want to know while entring on a form, is there any time-out limit between the entry and saving point?
    or any other solution please help. vm thankful.
    my db

    I got this error
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    Please guide me what to do to resolve this problem
    Farhad

    The error, ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel, is a client driver error.
    The client driver simply says "hey, the database server process servicing me has torn down our communication channel!". The communication channel is usually a TCP socket connection.
    The client driver has no idea why. Thus you have to find the answer on the server.
    The usual cause of this communication channel being closed, is the Oracle server process servicing the client session, crashing.
    When an Oracle server process crashes, it does not tell the client. It usually writes an entry to the Oracle alert log, dump a trace file, and terminates. When terminating, it tears down any communication channels (TCP sockets) it may have opened.
    Therefore you must look in
    - the alert log file for an error message listing the crash (which will include the dump file name)
    - look at this trace dump file (which is difficult if you're not familiar with Oracle internals)
    - investigate the stack trace and error codes on Metalink (which often turns up the bug notes for this, plus any workarounds or available patches)
    Usually however, one should log these types of Oracle server errors as a TAR with Oracle Support.

  • Convrtd to Invterval Part- ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

    Hi all,
    I had a table as Interval Partitioned. In order to create XML- Xpath indexes on it, I converted it to Range Partitioned table.
    I am able to create the XPATH indexes but I get the error: ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    - When I revert the code to Interval Partitioned without the XMLIndex, it works fine(although takes time as no XML Index)
    - When I convert table to non partitioned table, create the XML Index, it works fine.
    But I need the partitons, so when I create the partitioned table I get the error.
    CREATE TABLE INT_PART_TABLE
    DB_ID VARCHAR2(10 BYTE),
    xML_mESSAGE SYS.XMLTYPE,
    LOAD_TIMESTAMP TIMESTAMP(6)
    XMLTYPE xML_mESSAGE STORE AS BINARY XML
    PARTITION BY RANGE (LOAD_TIMESTAMP)
    PARTITION MAX VALUES LESS THAN (TIMESTAMP' 2013-06-01 00:00:00')

    NOCACHE
    ENABLE ROW MOVEMENT;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_XMLINDEX.dropparameter('Indx_Par');
    END;
    BEGIN

    end;
    create index INDX_XPATHS on "INT_PART_TABLE" (XML_MESSAGE) indextype is xdb.xmlindex
    parameters ('PARAM Indx_Par') local;
    Now if I execute the following statement in
    SELECT T.xML_mESSAGE
    FROM INT_PART_TABLE1 T
    WHERE XMLEXISTS (
    declare namespace abc="ABCD";
    declare namespacedef="DEFG";
    declare namespace xyz="XYZA";
    let $tt as xs:boolean := fn:exists($p/main/id = ("144283","9085802")])
    return if ($tt) then true()
    else ()'
    PASSING T.xML_mESSAGE AS "p");
    - Is there any other way of writing this Select statement, which may work?
    - Any other thing I need to take care of when defining the table and partitions script so that I don't get this error?

    Hi,
    I think it's time you give a clear (and working) test case so that we can safely try to reproduce the issue.
    What you've given so far has syntax error and name mismatch.
    So please :
    - database version (SELECT * FROM v$version)
    - complete sequence of DLLs
    - some sample XML documents (it doesn't have to be the real ones, but at least something realistic)
    Thanks in advance.
    declare namespace abc="ABCD";
    declare namespacedef="DEFG";
    declare namespace xyz="XYZA";
    let $tt as xs:boolean := fn:exists($p/main/id = ("144283","9085802")])
    return if ($tt) then true()
    else ()'Why all that stuff? You don't have to return a boolean.

  • Error ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel in droppping  a table

    Good evening,
    I am very new on Oracle and I have a problem with some tables. Without any reason, apparently, I can't drop some of my table. Oracle gives me this error:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    and then close the connection of the user.
    What I should have to do?
    It is very important.
    Thanks a lot
