SQL Query with Joins

Hi..I'm having trouble wiht my query.
I'm getting way too many rows when displayed.
I should have either 12 or 24 row...I think 12, but not sure.
What I am getting is 228 rows displayed.
This is all my code, including the select statment that dsiplays rows.

Suggestions:
You can use "CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW" instead of "DROP VIEW" and "CREATE VIEW", although either will work.
Preface column names with table names to avoid ambiguity.
Select from the fewest tables possible. In other words, if some columns are in multiple tables, and you can get all the columns you want from one of those tables, then don't use the others; It just overly complicates things. It looks like you can get all the columns you want from the class, course, and schedule_type_details tables, so eliminate the class_location and schedule_type tables. For example, instead of joining class.schedule_id to schedule_type.schedule_id and joining schedule_type.schedule_id to schedule_type_details.schedule_id, just join class.schedule_id to schedule_type_details.schedule_id.
Make sure you have all the join conditions that you need. For example, is the course_id unique by itself? Or, does it require a combination of course_id and department_id to be unique? You may need to add a join condition for department_id. If this is what you are missing, then this
would account for having more rows than expected.
What data type is school_year? Is it VARCHAR2 or NUMBER or DATE? You have used TO_DATE to convert the VARCHAR2 string '1/mar/1997' to a DATE, then used TO_CHAR to convert it back to VARCHAR2, which seems pointless. If school_year is a DATE, then you want to convert '1/mar/1997' to a DATE for comparison. The best way to do that is to use TO_DATE and supply a date format,
to avoid any problems with implicit conversions and conflicting date formats.
Please see suggested corrected code below:
CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW classes_schedule
AS
SELECT   class.class_id,
         class.school_year,
         class.semester,
         class.course_id,
         class.class_room,

         schedule_type_details.starting_time,
         schedule_type_details.day,
         schedule_type_details.duration

         course,
         schedule_type_details
WHERE    class.course_id = course.course_id

AND      class.schedule_id = schedule_type_details.schedule_id
AND      class.semester = 'SPRING'

  • Sql Query with Join

    I have a table called logon table which has some columns like userid, Firstname, lastname, email and Parent.
    Typically looks like this
    userid Firstname lastname email      parent
    101 Bob     Dan          [email protected]     309
    102     Riz     Bob          [email protected]     101

    106     Joe     Brooks     [email protected]          701
    Here parent is again an User id column and this represents the managers id.
    I want to write a query which would pull the data in this format.Manager id should be replaced by First Name and Last Name.

    I have the same query but instead running using bind variable (I test it with both oracle form and SQL*plus), it takes considerably longer with a different execution plan:-
    Execution Plan

    TABLEA has around 3million record while TABLEB has 300 records. Is there anyway I can improve the speed of the sql query with bind variable? I have DBA Access to the database
    Regards
    Ivan

    Many thanks for your reply.
    I have run the statistic already for the both tableA and tableB as well all the indexes associated with both table (using dbms_stats, I am on 9i db ) but not the indexed columns.
    for table I use:-
    begin
    dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(ownname=> 'IVAN', tabname=> 'TABLEA', partname=> NULL);
    end;
    for index I use:-
    begin
    dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(ownname=> 'IVAN', indname=> 'TABLEB_IDX_003', partname=> NULL);
    end;
    Is it possible to show me a sample of how to collect statisc for INDEX columns stats?

  • SQL query with parallel hint  running very slow

    I have a SQL query which joins three huge tables. (given below)
         insert /*+ append */ into final_table (oid, rmeth, id, expdt, crddt, coupon, bitfields, processed_count)
         select /*+ full(t2) parallel(t2,31) full(t3) parallel(t3,31)*/
         seq_final_table.nextval, '200', t2.id, t3.end_date, '1/jul/2009',123,t2.bitfield, 0
         from table1 t1, table2 t2, table3 t3 where
         t1.id=t2.id and
         t2.pid=t3.pid and
         t2.vid=t3.vid and
         t3.end_date is not null and
         (trunc(t1.expiry_date) != trunc(t3.end_date) or trim(t1.expiry_date) is null);
         Below are some statistics of the three tables.
         Table_Name          RowCount    Size(MB)
         table1 36469938 532
         table2 242172205     39184
         table3 231756758     29814
         The above query ran for 30+ hours, and returned with no rows inserted into final_table. I didn't get any error message also.
         But when I ran the query with table1 containing just 10000 records, the query completed succesfully within 20 minutes.
         Can any one please optimize the above query?

    As a side note: You probably don't want to insert a string into a date field, won't you?
    Under the assumption that crddt is of datatype date:
    crddt='1/jul/2009' needs to be changed into
    crddt= to_date('01/07/2009','dd/mm/yyyy') This is data type correct and nls independent.

  • SQL query with JSP and WML-parameters

    Hey,
    Could you help me?
    I'm trying to do the following. WML deck card 1 send parameter to same WML deck's card help. I try to read the parameter with JSP in card help by putting the parameter to SQL query, but it doesn't work. I can read the parameter with WML in card help. I can also print the value of the parameter with JSP if I generate WML with JSP.
    /*parameter sending from card 1 to card help*/
    out.println("<go href='#helpcard'>");
    out.println("<setvar name='valittukurssi' value='$(valittukurssi)'/>");
    /*parameter read with WML in card help */
    <p>Valitse kurssi.
    $valittukurssi</p>
    /'parameter read with JSP by generating WML with JSP*/
    out.println("<p>$valittukurssi</p>");
    /* SQL query with JSP */
    ResultSet uudettulokset = uusilause.executeQuery("select * from kurssi where lyhenne='$valittukurssi'");
    Thanks,
    Rampe

    You're problem is easy to fix. You're confusing WML variables with JSP variables. See below:
    >
    /*parameter sending from card 1 to card help*/
    out.println("<go href='#helpcard'>");
    out.println("<setvar name='valittukurssi'
    value='$(valittukurssi)'/>");
    Above you set a var that will work on the phone, not in JSP.
    /*parameter read with WML in card help */
    <p>Valitse kurssi.
    $valittukurssi</p>
    Yes the above does display the parameter, because it is a client side WML var, but you cannot use this variable in the JSP code (that's why your SWL fails).
    /'parameter read with JSP by generating WML with
    JSP*/
    out.println("<p>$valittukurssi</p>");Here's you're problem, the above line is EXACTLY the same as the one before it. When the container parses through this JSP code it translates the above line to:
    <p>$valittukurssi</p> on the WML page and the CLIENT uses it's local variable to display it.
    What you need and want is to have a variable that can be used in JSP code and output to your WML page. Here's how it's done:
    out.println("<go href='#helpcard'>");
    String some_name = "valittukurssi";
    out.println("<setvar name='"+some_name+"'
    value='$("+some_name+")'/>");
    //note that you may have to escape the ( and ) with a \
    //so we displayed the variable above into the WML page, now we can use it in the SQL query:
    /* SQL query with JSP */
    ResultSet uudettulokset =
    uusilause.executeQuery("select * from kurssi where
    lyhenne='"+some_name+"'");//the end of the command is: " ' " ) ;

  • Need help with SQL Query with Inline View + Group by

    Hello Gurus,
    I would really appreciate your time and effort regarding this query. I have the following data set.
    Reference_No---Check_Number---Check_Date--------Description-------------------------------Invoice_Number----------Invoice_Type---Paid_Amount-----Vendor_Number
    1234567----------11223-------------- 7/5/2008----------paid for cleaning----------------------44345563------------------I-----------------*20.00*-------------19
    1234567----------11223--------------7/5/2008-----------Adjustment for bad quality---------44345563------------------A-----------------10.00------------19
    7654321----------11223--------------7/5/2008-----------Adjustment from last billing cycle-----23543556-------------------A--------------------50.00--------------19
    4653456----------11223--------------7/5/2008-----------paid for cleaning------------------------35654765--------------------I---------------------30.00-------------19
    Please Ignore '----', added it for clarity
    I am trying to write a query to aggregate paid_amount based on Reference_No, Check_Number, Payment_Date, Invoice_Number, Invoice_Type, Vendor_Number and display description with Invoice_type 'I' when there are multiple records with the same Reference_No, Check_Number, Payment_Date, Invoice_Number, Invoice_Type, Vendor_Number. When there are no multiple records I want to display the respective Description.
    The query should return the following data set
    Reference_No---Check_Number---Check_Date--------Description-------------------------------Invoice_Number----------Invoice_Type---Paid_Amount-----Vendor_Number
    1234567----------11223-------------- 7/5/2008----------paid for cleaning----------------------44345563------------------I-----------------*10.00*------------19

    4653456----------11223--------------7/5/2008-----------paid for cleaning------------------------35654765-------------------I---------------------30.00--------------19
    The following is my query. I am kind of lost.
    select B.Description, A.sequence_id,A.check_date, A.check_number, A.invoice_number, A.amount, A.vendor_number

  • Extract Sql Query with Actual Parameters from Report

    Hi
    I am able to extract query from Crystal Report using the following code :
    ReportDocument.ReportClientDocument.RowSetController.GetSqlStatement(new GroupPath, out tmp);
    But the sql query retrieve comes in the following format :
    select name , trans_code, account_code from command_query.accounts
    where account_code = {?Command_query_Prompt0}  and effective_date < '{?Command_query_prompt1 }'
    The parameters which I m using in the reports are :
    Account_Code and Effective_Date .
    Why does my extracted sql translates it into {?Command_query_Prompt0} and '{?Command_query_prompt1 }' .
    Is there any way to map this to the actual parameter values ?
    OR
    Can we extract the query after assigning the values ?
    Any help is appreciated ...
    Thanks
    Sanchet

    hi,
    You can create nested sql query with conditional parameters,
    For example
    Select Code From OITT Where Code IN (Select ItemCode From OITM
    Where ItemName LIKE '[%0]' + '%%')

    From my mysql database, I want to allow the user to run a query and produce a csv / text file of our membership database.   Unfortunately,  I just found out my hosting company does not support the SQL query with OUTFILE clause for MySQL database.
    Are there any other options available to produce a file besides me running the query in phpadmin and making the file available to users.
    Thanks.  George

  • Sql query with multiple joins to same table

    I have to write a query for a client to display business officers' names and title along with the business name
    The table looks like this
    AcctNumber
    OfficerTitle
    OfficerName
    RecKey
    90% of the businesses have exactly 4 officer records, although some have less and some have more.
    There is a separate table that has the AcctNumber, BusinessName about 30 other fields that I don’t need
    An individual account can have 30 or 40 records on the other table.
    The client wants to display 1 record per account.
    Initially I wrote a query to join the table to itself:
    Select A.OfficerTtitle, A.OfficerName, B.OfficerTitle, B.OfficerName, C.OfficerTtitle, C.OfficerName, D.OfficerTitle, D.OfficerName where A.AcctNumber = B.AcctNumber and A.AcctNumber = C.AcctNumber and A.AcctNumber = D.AcctNumber
    This returned tons of duplicate rows for each account ( number of records * number of records, I think)
    So added
    And A.RecKey > B.RecKey and B.RecKey > C. RecKey and C.RecKey . D.RecKey
    This works when there are exactly 4 records per account. If there are less than 4 records on the account it skips the account and if there are more than 4 records, it returns multiple rows.
    But when I try to l join this to the other table to get the business name, I get a row for every record on the other table
    I tried select distinct on the other table and the query runs for ever and never returns anything
    I tried outer joins and subqueries, but no luck so far. I was thinking maybe a subquery - if exists - because I don't know how many records there are on an account, but don't know how to structure that
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

    The client wants to display 1 record per account.As someone has already mentioned, you should post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for both tables (relevant columns only). You don't have to post a lot of sample data. For example, you need to pick 1 out of 30 or 40 rows (max) for the same account, but it's almost certainly enough if you post only 3 or 4 rows (max) for an account.
    Also, post the results you want from the sample data that you post, and explain how you get those resutls from that data.
    Always say which version of Oracle you're using. This sounds like a PIVOT problem, and a new SELECT .... PIVOT feature was introduced in Oracle 11.1. If you're using Oracle 11, you don't want to have to learn the old way to do pivots. On the other hand, if you have Oracle 10, a solution that uses a new feature that you don't have won't help you.
    Whenever you have a question, please post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for some sample data, the results you want from that data, an explanation, and your Oracle version.
    Initially I wrote a query to join the table to itself:
    Select A.OfficerTtitle, A.OfficerName, B.OfficerTitle, B.OfficerName, C.OfficerTtitle, C.OfficerName, D.OfficerTitle, D.OfficerName where A.AcctNumber = B.AcctNumber and A.AcctNumber = C.AcctNumber and A.AcctNumber = D.AcctNumber Be careful, and post the exact code that you're running. The statement above can't be what you ran, because it doesn't have a FROM clause.

    Any suggestions would be appreciatedDisplaying 1 column from n rows as n columns on 1 row is called Pivoting . See the following link fro several ways to do pivots:
    SQL and PL/SQL FAQ
    Pivoting requires that you know exactly how many columns will be in the result set. If that number depends on the data in the table, then you might prefer to use String Aggregation , where the output consists of a huge string column, that contains the concatenation of the data from n rows. This big string can be formatted so that it looks like multiple columns. For different string aggregation techniques, see:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/StringAggregationTechniques.php
    The following thread discusses some options for pivoting a variable number of columns:

  • SQL Query with wrong result

    Hello.
    I have a query with LEFT OUTER JOIN that I think returns invalid results. Here are the problem details:
    CREATE TABLE DOGERR(
    IdDog INTEGER,
    SfPdg CHAR(1),
    IdVpl INTEGER,
    SfVpGot INTEGER,
    SfZrr CHAR(1)
    INSERT INTO DOGERR(IdDog, SfPdg, IdVpl, SfVpGot, SfZrr) VALUES (1, 'S', 1, 1, '7');
    INSERT INTO DOGERR(IdDog, SfPdg, IdVpl, SfVpGot, SfZrr) VALUES (2, 'S', 1, 1, '7');
    INSERT INTO DOGERR(IdDog, SfPdg, IdVpl, SfVpGot, SfZrr) VALUES (3, '$', 1, 2, 'C');
    COMMIT;
    CREATE UNIQUE INDEX DOGERR_PK ON DOGERR(IdDog);
    And now the query:
    SELECT D.IdDog, D.SfPdg, D.IdVpl, D.SfVpGot, D.SfZrr, T.IdVpl AS IdVplJoin, T.SfVpGot AS SfVpGotJoin, T.SfZrr AS SfZrrJoin
    FROM DOGERR D
    LEFT OUTER JOIN (SELECT * FROM DOGERR WHERE SfPdg = 'S' OR SfPdg = 'S') T ON
    T.IdVpl = D.IdVpl AND T.SfVpGot = D.SfVpGot AND T.SfZrr = D.SfZrr
    WHERE
    D.IdDog = 3
    AND D.SfVpGot = 2
    AND D.SfZrr = 'C';
    This query should (by my understanding) return only one row in wich the joined subquery columns should be NULL. And indeed query returns only one row on Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production and on Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production:
    IDDOG = 3, SFPDG = "$", IDVPL = 1, SFVPGOT = 2, SFZRR = "C", IDVPLJOIN = NULL, SFVPGOTJOIN = NULL, SFZRRJOIN = NULL
    But on Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 - 64bit Production it returns TWO rows:
    IDDOG = 3, SFPDG = "$", IDVPL = 1, SFVPGOT = 2, SFZRR = "C", IDVPLJOIN = 1, SFVPGOTJOIN = 1, SFZRRJOIN = "7"
    IDDOG = 3, SFPDG = "$", IDVPL = 1, SFVPGOT = 2, SFZRR = "C", IDVPLJOIN = 1, SFVPGOTJOIN = 1, SFZRRJOIN = "7"
    And now the interesting part: any of the following modified versions of query works even on Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 - 64bit Production, although modifications should not modify the result set:
    -- Removed unnecessary WHERE conditions
    SELECT D.IdDog, D.SfPdg, D.IdVpl, D.SfVpGot, D.SfZrr, T.IdVpl AS IdVplJoin, T.SfVpGot AS SfVpGotJoin, T.SfZrr AS SfZrrJoin
    FROM DOGERR D
    LEFT OUTER JOIN (SELECT * FROM DOGERR WHERE SfPdg = 'S' OR SfPdg = 'S') T ON
    T.IdVpl = D.IdVpl AND T.SfVpGot = D.SfVpGot AND T.SfZrr = D.SfZrr
    WHERE
    D.IdDog = 3;
    -- Removed unnecessary OR condition in subquery
    SELECT D.IdDog, D.SfPdg, D.IdVpl, D.SfVpGot, D.SfZrr, T.IdVpl AS IdVplJoin, T.SfVpGot AS SfVpGotJoin, T.SfZrr AS SfZrrJoin
    FROM DOGERR D
    LEFT OUTER JOIN (SELECT * FROM DOGERR WHERE SfPdg = 'S') T ON
    T.IdVpl = D.IdVpl AND T.SfVpGot = D.SfVpGot AND T.SfZrr = D.SfZrr
    WHERE
    D.IdDog = 3
    AND D.SfVpGot = 2
    AND D.SfZrr = 'C';
    -- Removed columns from joined subquery from SELECT part
    SELECT D.IdDog, D.SfPdg, D.IdVpl, D.SfVpGot, D.SfZrr, T.IdVpl AS IdVplJoin, T.SfVpGot AS SfVpGotJoin
    FROM DOGERR D
    LEFT OUTER JOIN (SELECT * FROM DOGERR WHERE SfPdg = 'S' OR SfPdg = 'S') T ON
    T.IdVpl = D.IdVpl AND T.SfVpGot = D.SfVpGot AND T.SfZrr = D.SfZrr
    WHERE
    D.IdDog = 3
    AND D.SfVpGot = 2
    AND D.SfZrr = 'C';
    NOTE: the query itself is a little stupid but this is just to demonstrate the problem. We have faced this problem at a customer with our real-world query.
    So, my question is: why different results ?
    Thanks.
    David

    I need to get out the column names in a VB program in the same order they would appear in the SQL query above...
    I want to use something like:
    select column_name from information_schema.columns where TABLE_NAME = ....
    except there are several tables involved above so I dont know the format!

    If you execute the query in your program using the SqlDataReader.ExecuteReader method, the column names will be available via the GetName method of the returned reader.  But note that your query may return multiple columns with the same name.
    Dim reader As SqlDataReader = command.ExecuteReader()
    For x = 0 To reader.FieldCount - 1
    Console.WriteLine(reader.GetName(x))
    Next x
