SQL Server 2003 on MBP

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to buy Macbook Pro, but can SQL Server run on MBP? Actually SQL Server is the backend of the system that we are selling and I needed it to be installed in my MBP for demo purposes. I hope somebody can shed light on this concern.
Thanks

SQL Server is offically not supported on Apple products, regardless of how you run Windows:

  • SQL Server 2003 support?

I need to migrate a lot of SQL Server 2003 databases to Oracle 10g. It looks like the migration workbench doesn't have support for 2003. is that True?
is there a beta version coming that might support 2003?
What expectation should I have if I run it against SQL Server 2003 anyway -- is it possible that I'll still get all of my data, and some of the stored procedures, etc?

We are not aware that a SQL Server 2003 existed. Only 2000 and 2005.

  • JDBC Adapter for SQL Server 2003

We are trying to connect from XI to SQL Server 2003 for the first time.  Does anyone know what values to use for these 2 parms in the JDBC receiver channel:
    1) JDBC Driver
    2)  Connection

    Hi,
    JDBC Driver :
    jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://<server name>;DatabaseName=Nameof database
    Connection:
    com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
If Driver is not installed for SQL than use this doc:

  • Which is the best way to migrate the SQL SERVER 2000 Database to SQL SERVER 2003 Database?

    Hi,
I  need to migrate the Production database sql server 2000 to Sql server 2003, Please give me the best idea to migrate the database without any loss data, credentials and  Objects.
    Nandha Kumar

SQL server does not have any version named SQL server 2003 please check the version correctly it should be either SQL 2005,2008,2008 R2,2012
You can use the backup/restore to upgrade the SQL 2000 database to till SQL 2005,2008,2008R2
For SQL Server 2000 to 2012
First upgrade from SQL 2000 database to either SQL 2005, 2008 or 2008R2 and than upgrade it to SQL 2012.
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/eaa1eb44-729f-466b-8233-cb768fbb4208/upgrading-to-sql-server-2008-from-sql-server-2000?forum=sqlsetupandupgrade
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/4fac7511-2c75-46a0-802b-807dd26b12bf/sql-2012-will-not-convert-a-sql-2000-database?forum=sqlservermigration
And after migration to SQL 2005 or 2008, if you want to script the database than can generate scripts pick DB and check off "script all objects in the selected database".
    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2011/05/07/sql-server-2008-2008-r2-create-script-to-copy-database-schema-and-all-the-objects-data-schema-stored-procedure-functions-triggers-tables-views-constraints-and-all-other-database-objects/
You can upgrade from SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008, and SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012.

  • Connecting to MS SQL Server 2003 with JDBC.

I have a problem connecting to the MS SQL Server 2003.
When i execute my sample example coded in JDBC it gives me the error :
TCP/IP Connection failed . Connection Refused.
The authentication used in MS SQL Server 2003 is the SQL authentication. The port number used is 1433. But when i telnet the remote machine on which the SQL Server is installed on port number 1433 it gives me the error : Connection to the host lost.
Is this the problem with MS SQL Server 2003 ?
I changed the port number to 1400 but still the problem persists .
Are the settings of the SQL Server a problem . Because i have not used it much & it is been set by others.
The JDBC code is surely not a problem as i have checked that code on different machine with the databases.
I have tried other drivers but the error remains the same. ?

Thanks for the replies but as u suggested to check
As u have suggested to check the firewall i
dont know the way to check it. So can u please
explain the way to do it.You need to talk to the owner of the server on which the database is running and ask if it's behind a firewall. The best way to check is to talk to some other people who know about your network.
I'd also ask which port the listener is running on. Maybe they changed from the standard port 1433 to confound hackers.
Is there any way to check whether there is a problem
with the particular port. I changed the port number
to 1400 but still the problem persists. The port change won't help. The only person who can change the port on which the SQL server listener is running is the database DBA. You can tell your client to try to connect to different ports, but the listener on the server side won't change.
If the SQL server client won't connect, you've got a very serious problem indeed. Sure you have the server name correct? Start with that. Check the easy things before you thrash around with harder problems.

  • Boot Camp or Parrarels to Run Microsoft SQL Server in MBP

Hi i have this question for you all mac expert here.
I'm a switcher , My MBP is my first apple product that i buy (except of few ipods of course :P ) ,
Anyway i really glad that i made the switch, everything is simple and easy to learn especially with mac user forum like this, every problem that i met are solved easilly (except the part taht i still can't figuree out how to use iphoto :P )
Anyway i use my MBP mainly at home for surfing the net, keeping photos and music, and editing photos and videos.
However i'm gonna set up a bussines now , and it uses Microsoft SQL Server for the stock data and finance accounting, my bussines is quite small, and the network consist of 1 Win XP PC at warehouse , 1 Win XP PC at cashier, 1 Wirelles router to connect all of the computer to a network harddrive where the data for the microsoft SQL server is stored.
However I need another Win XP PC/notebook in my office to connect to the network, but since i have my MBP, i think "why should i buy another WinXP PC/notebook?"
Okay so i searched the forums about WIn XP on MAc, and found Boot Camp and Parrarels, but i still can't decide which one to use or better for my needs.
my needs is simply to run the **** Microsoft SQL Server on my MBP and connect it to the rest of the network.
I read some post before that the parrarels didn't support networking yet, is that true ?
If that;s true, that's mean i shoud go for boot camp instead, but i don't like the idea that i must restart my MBP to get to WinXP , and that's also mean that about 8 hours a day i'll fix my eyes to that ugly interface again
can anyone give me any solutions?
First of all Thank you very much.
and sorry for my broken english :P

Since your software is custom made I won't be able to tell you what you'll need on your system. However, the purpose of having a database on a network is so that multiple computers can access the same database. That's what SQL Server does; it stores and shares the one database to other computers on the network. A "front end" application such as Microsoft Access or even a web browser is typically used to connect to the SQL Server.
I suspect that what you're calling SQL Server is actually just the front end application, which is why I was confused.
Regardless, if you'll be using your MBP to connect across the network to the database then you'll be fine using either Boot Camp or Parallels. I would recommend Parallels simply because it is currently supported (Apple is not yet officially supporting Boot Camp) and Boot Camp only allows you to run Windows or Mac OS X one at a time. Parallels is worth the price for the capability of using both systems at once.
Keep in mind that you'll have to purchase a copy of Windows for your MBP as well.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Version 2003-2008 Microsoft SQL Server

I was working with connection to SQL Server 2003, but, on the next days we switch on SQL Server 2008, my question is:
The drivers with i was working on 2003 works on 2008? If don't, where i get them because i don't have the media of SQL Server 2008.

As far as I know , no they do not work with 2008. The JDBC driver version 2.x works with 2008 and not 1.x. You will get get from MSFT site -
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=99B21B65-E98F-4A61-B811-19912601FDC9&displaylang=en
and java version which it is compatible with is Java 1.6.x.
Try it and let us know.

  • Unable To Select From SQL Server table with more than 42 columns

I have set up a link between a Microsoft SQL Server 2003 database and an Oracle 9i database using Heterogeneous Services (HSODBC). It's working well with most of the schema I'm selecting from except for 3 tables. I don't know why. The common denominator between all the tables is that they all have at least 42 columns each, two have 42 columns, one has 56, and the other one, 66. Two of the tables are empty, one has almost 100k records, one has has 170k records. So I don't think the size of the table matters.
Is there a limitation on the number of table columns you can select from through a dblink? Even the following statement errors out:
    select 1
    from "Table_With_42_Cols"@sqlserver_db
The error message I get is:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message [Generic Connectivity Using ODBC]
    ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from sqlserver_db
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not a very efficient and space friendly design to do name-value pairs like that.
Other methods to consider is splitting those 1500 parameters up into groupings of similar parameters, and then have a table per group.
Another option would be to use "vertical table partitioning" (as oppose to the more standard horizontal partitionining provided by the Oracle partition option) - this can be achieved (kind of) in Oracle using clusters.
Sooner or later this name-value design is going to bite you hard. It has 1500 rows where there should be only 1 row. It is not scalable.. and as you're discovering, it is unnatural to use. I would rather change that table and design sooner than later.

  • Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server

We are running into an error on a SQL request from SQL-IDA to the SQL-IDB server. Both servers are on Windows 2005 with MS SQL Server 2003 SP3.
OLE DB provider "SQL-IDA" for linked server "SQL-IDB" returned message "Login timeout
    expired".
OLE DB provider "SQL-IDA" for linked server "SQL-IDB" returned message "An error has
occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005,
this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
    allow remote connections.".
    Msg 53, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53].
It seems to suggest that SQL-IDA cannot find the network path to SQL-IDB. We've followed the steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;914277 but it did not resolve our issue. Is it possible that the MSDTC dynamic port range
should be set to a specific range on both servers?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Albert

    Hi Albert,
Can you try to use the SQL Server Management Studio on server ‘SQL-IDA’ to connect to the instance on server ‘SQL-IDB’ to see if it works or not?
There are possible reasons to error 53:
     a) typo in the server name, or using "/" rather than "\" between server name and instance name, e.g. "myserver/myinst" is not correct.
     b) name resolution to the server name is not correct, "ping -a yourserver" would tell if that's the case
     c) The server machine is firewall'ed and file sharing is not in the exception list. You need put "File and Printer Sharing" in exception.

Hi,I have a problem with the BO Supervisor 6.5: I can't connect to my local Microsoft Sql Server 2003 using OLE DB, but only  with ODBC...The system hangs for a while after I've choosen this option, and then I receive this error message: "Cant edit NetworkLayer" Any idea? Thank you  Daniele Tiles

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting here.
Connecting to Microsoft Azure SQL Database by using OLE DB or ADO is not supported on SQL Azure.
    Ref: http://www.connectionstrings.com/sql-azure/
Microsoft does not announce support for OLE DB connections to Azure and there are limitations. Some required OLE DB schema rowsets are not available from an Azure connection, and some properties that identify features in SQL Server are not adjusted to represent
SQL Azure limitations. For most common connect/query/update tasks it seems to work fine.

  • Connect SQL Server 2012 from Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0

    Hi,
I currently have a setup where ETL tool Ab Intio, running on a Linux server, connects to the SQL Server 2005 through a passthrough Wintel server with Windows Server 2003 OS using SQL server native client 9.0
Now I have the requirement to upgrade the SQL server from 2005 to 2012.
My question is, will it be possible to connect to SQL server 2012 through Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0?
As per the specs, I need native client 11.0+ to fully support SQL Server 2012, but then, as per specs, native client 11.0 doesnot run on Windows server 2003. OS upgradation is currently not on the cards.
So will it be possible to the run the basic queries we use currently, if we can connect SQL server 2012 through Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0/10.0, without updgrading the OS of the Wintel server?
    Thanking you in advance!

    Hi Soumya,
Yes, you can use the SQL Server Native Client shipped with SQL Server 2005 to connect to a SQL Server 2012 instance, and there is no need to upgrade the operating system.
