SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation Media Root Directory location for XP SP3?

Where is the SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation Media director?  This question asks during a 'new installation or add features to an existing installation'.  The installation media root directory is not indicated under 'options'.  I trying side-by-side
installation next to SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.
It appears that C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2 (where 1033_ENU_LP, Resources, and x86 dirs are installed) is the installation media root directory, but is is not a valid folder.
Also tried copying the 1033_ENU_LP, Resources, and x86 dirs from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2 into a directory that I created in c:\2008R2installationDir, and then running setup.exe, but still do not have
an installation media root dir specified under options.

There is no DVD; SQLServer2008R2SP2-KB2630458-x86-ENU.exe was downloaded.  This problem occurs when setup.exe is run, after running *ENU.exe to download the files.  Specifying the directory where the
SQLServer2008R2SP2-KB2630458-x86-ENU.exe doesn't help.
>>It doesn't seem like any instances have been installed, yet.  Nothing shows up under Administrative Toos | Services.  Under Start | Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 , there are two choices:  Configuration Tools and Documentation&Tutorials.
Hello,
What seems to me that you have downloaded SP2 for SQL server 2008 R2(SQLServer2008R2SP2-KB2630458-x86-ENU.exe ).And as you say you dont find any thing under SQL 2008 r2.So i guess that is why SP2 installation is not moving
ahead. Can you download SQL server 208 R2 setup again and install database engine and ither fetures with client tools. And then you can move ahead with SP2 installation

Below is some details about the machine.
    Machine processor count:       2
OS version:                    Windows Vista Home Premium
OS service pack:               Service Pack 2
      OS region:                     United States
      OS language:                   German
      OS architecture:               x86
      Process architecture:          32 Bit
      OS clustered:                  No
C drive has 200GB+ free space and is formatted with 'Allocation unit size' = 4096 bytes
Also, chkdsk initially found a file system problem but it had been fixed by running the 'chkdsk /F' command.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I ran into this as well, but was able to resolve it using the Intel Rapid Storage Download link referenced earlier in this thread.
Here's the scenario:  Dell Latitude E6500, Win 7 x64.  I run 3 instances of SQL Server on this machine (05,08, and 12); it is a development machine.
Recently, the 500gb drive in my spare media bay drive, where my database files are, started reporting USB device errors.  After scanning it, I discovered that the Dell utilities were reporting a Western Digital drive error code.  So, I backed the
drive up (it was still functioning), and then replaced it with a 1TB Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive.  (Same brand and type as the original, drive, just in the large format 1TB option).
Everything "seemed" ok... until I started accessing SQL Server 2008 databases.  SQL 2k5 and 2k12 didn't seem to mind, but SQL 2k8 started throwing:
Cannot use file 'd:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL2K8\MSSQL\DATA\mastlog.ldf' because it was originally formatted with sector size 4096 and is now on a volume with sector size 3072. Move the file to a volume with a sector size that is the same as or smaller than the original sector size.
I fell back to my "dying" 500gb drive while I tried to figure out what to do.  I found some information about bios/firmware issues with Dell, that turned out to be a bad path.  I ran the Intel Rapid Storage Win 7 x64 installer (didn't need all
that floppy/non floppy stuff the Intel site talked about).  I put my 1TB drive back in the bay...and tada, all 3 instances of SQL Server (and my instance of DB2) are all happy... so far.
I did find in the windows event log the following for both the SQL 2k8 and 2k12 instances after coming back up on the 1tb drive with the Intel Driver update:
The tail of the log for database DataMart is being rewritten to match the new sector size of 4096 bytes. 1024 bytes at offset 553905152 in file D:\MSSQL\LOGs\DataMart5.ldf will be written.
    So far no ill effects...

    Hello,
Please try to uninstall all SQL Server components using Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.
If you have already uninstalled SQL Server before trying to reinstall, please perform the following steps to manually uninstall SQL Server:
    1. Uninstall all SQL Server components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and Features
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer like
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.
Once you have uninstalled, please try to reinstall again.
    Hope this helps.

Have you found any error in event logs?
In my case even after uninstalling all 2005 related components it didn't worked. I had to resort to a brute force way and
    remove following registry keys
    32 Bit OS: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90
    64 Bit OS: HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90

  • Service accounts rights in Sql Server 2008 clustered installation.

I have to install  Sqlserver 2008 in a 2 node clustered environment in
Windows Server 2008 R2. For that I have set up 4 less privileged
a/c in domain for Db engine, Sql agent, Reporting services and Analysis
service. During the installation I plan to specify these a/c's in the
domain to run the above 4 services under these a/c. I understand the sql server agent
a/c should have 6 rights in the local computer security policy
ie a)Adjust memory quotas for process,b)Act as a part of os,c)Bypass
traverse chechking,d)Log on as a batch job and e)Log on as a service.
Will these rights get automatically assigned during installation
or should it be manually assigned in each node under its local security
policy. Also what are rights for the other 3 service a/c and do these
rights get assigned automatically during installation.

You should get Domain account created before starting cluster installation and specifically give these rights to the account.
Regarding rights below link might be helpful
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/askjay/archive/2011/02/28/required-rights-for-sql-server-service-account.aspx
When installing cluster make sure you use Domain account which is added as local administrator on both nodes.
It should have righst to create Computer name object(CNO) in domain where cluster is being created
Windows CNO must have complete rights on SQL server CNO.You should also take help from AD team in providing these rights and understanding if any.

  • I have a sql server 2008. What is the best placement for the tempdb.mdf?

The sql server has three drives c, d and e. The c drive contains the program. The D drive contains the main db and the tempdb.mdf. The E drives contains all the logs. I've seen the disk queue for drive D spiked up to 50 sometimes. The majority of the read/writes
came from maindb and the tempdb. I was wondering if it is a good idea to separate the tempdb from the maindb to another drive? Thanks.

    Hello,
Disk queue value you posted does not qualifies exactly which counter you are talking about. If you are getting instantaneous high value for Avg disk queue length it is not a issue but if this queue length is for long time and continues to be a straight line
then it can be issue. Its always good practice to put tempdb on separate drive to gain performance. Please post the value which counter shows not the value shown by graph.Refer below link

  • Adding instance to SQL Server 2008 R2 on SBS 2011 Standard

I need to add an instance to my SQL Server 2008 R2 that is part of Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system. When I click on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation" I get another pop up
window asking for SQL Server 2008 Installation Media. Where can I find this installation media?

    Hi BruceR80,
According to your description, SQL Server installation center asks for SQL Server 2008 installation media and you don't know where to find it. This could happen when the temporary folder to which the installation file is extracted doesn't exist. You could
follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue.
1.In Microsoft Download Center, download the SQL Server 2008 installation file to your local drive and click the file, you will see that the file will be extracted to a temporary folder. Please make a note of what directory it is extracted to. For example,
it could be in c:\ followed by a folder name which will be a set of random letters and numbers "fd7667bgbb33gg2g".
2.Copy that temporary folder to your desktop and close the SQL Server Installation Center window.
3.Reopen SQL Server Installation Center. Click on the installation tab and install. When it asks for SQL Server 2008 installation media, browse to the instillation media folder(that temporary folder) which is copied to your desktop and continue the installation
    process.

    S S Manne

    Hi Manne,
As your description, you come across an error when trying to install SQL Server 2008 express Service Pack 1 on windows XP Service Pack 3 machine. From your error log, I get the error(unable to read registry value). As my analysis, the issue could be due
to that your account doesn't have access to registry. Below are the recommendations for troubleshooting the issue.
    1. Make sure that you log in as an administrator of the machine.
    2. Please follow the steps below to make sure that you have granted the right permission to registry.
    a. Located HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server in registry.
    b. Right click and go to Permission, then you could see user accounts or groups. If your user account is not in the list, you could click Add to add your account there.
    c. Select your account and Click on Advance.
    d. Check on both check box ('Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent'.
and 'Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object'), click OK.
    e. Click OK again.
    Regards,
    Michelle Li

When installing SQL Server 2008 Express, I continue to get the following info in the install log.  I notice that I only get this issue with 64-bit PC's (win 7 & win 8.1).  Ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Need SQL Server service packs installation procedure

    Hey Guys,
I am in the process of installing service packs to my SQL Server 2008 and R2 editions, I was searching for the installation procedure in technet for this but nothing was provided for this, I tried to read the
"readme" and setup documentation provided in the SP 4 download page but its useless since its redirecting again to some other page which again points to same download page, It makes me wonder if there are any procedures provided by Microsoft for
this. Let me know if anyone has it. I don't want to follow any third party websites/ individual bloggers providing best practices/installation procedures.
My Environment: SQL SERVER 2008/ R2  (STANDARD)  and these are standalone
    machines.
OS: Windows server 2008 R2 STANDARD
    With regards,
    Gopinath.
    With regards, Gopinath.

Copy the patch files to the server
Run the patch file and follow the on-screen instructions
Select the instances that you wish to patch
    Allow the patch to finish
Reboot if a reboot is required (the patch will tell you if there were any locked files)

  • Package 'Microsoft SQL Management Studio Package' failed to load in Windows 7 OS/Sql Server 2008 R2

I encountered this error while setting up a new machine. I have VS 2008 with SP1, VS2010 installed. I tried to re-install Sql Maangement Studio 2008 R2 and Sql Server 2008 R2 but to no avail. However, I were able to isolate this to missing dlls.
It is looking for this dll. I don't see it installed on the system. Anyone can tell me why?

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 with Tools Evaluation Copy

    Hello,
Is the SQL Server 2008 R2 software (SSMS, BIDS) still available for evaluation download?  I was only able to find the Express edition, but I cannot open my solutions using Express.  I tried to upgrade Express to Evaluation, but I get the below
    error.
    Rule Check Result
Rule "SQL Server 2008 R2 edition upgrade" failed.
The selected SQL Server instance does not meet upgrade matrix requirements.
    OK
    Thank you - Brett

    Hello,
SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation Edition seems no longer available on Microsoft Download as you can see on the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8158
However, if you are a MSDN subscriber you can download the full media of any paid edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, run SQL Server setup and choose Evaluation Edition
on the “Product Key” page of SQL Server setup.
    Hope this helps.
