SQL Server 2012 Licensing Development - Production
I currently have 4 environments dev, qa ,staging and production each has a separate SQL 2012 instance on its own server (4 Instances). My question is on licensing SQL Server and when developers edition licensing can be used and when it become production
licensing. For Example: If developers are working local connecting to development DB and/or local DB. What is the proper licensing model? Can I consider these three environments development and not use a SQL Enterprise license?
If so each developer must have an MSDN account for the licensing? I am a little foggy on when is developers edition becomes SQL Enterprise License.

Question about MS SQL Server 2012 License on a server (renting/buying)
Hi,
I am currently paying about $300 per month to the hosting company for the MS SQL 2012 Standard Edition (for 4 cores) on my server, my question is, can I just buy MS SQL 2012 STD outright ( for example here http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/SQL-Server-Standard-Edition-2012/productID.281182400
) for around $3k and stop paying hosting company $300 monthly ?
If I am able to just buy it outright, is it possible to switch the licensing code to the new one that I bought without reinstalling or loosing database?
Thank you.Articles:

How to install sql server 2012 using the license of sql 2014
Hello,
We want to install sql server 2012 on a server because of an application that can not work with sql server 2014.
We have a license for sql server 2014. The license is not visible for sql 2014 in our licenses because it is now included in the installation package. We also can not get a license key for SQL 2012 server now.
How can we get a valid sql server 2012 license key?
Thanks,

Sql Server 2012 Evaluation - How many connection allowed ?
Hi all
I'm testing the replication, everything Works fine, but I'd like to know how many connections allow the evaluation of the SQL Server versión I'm testing on.
We are testing 2 stores with 2 server in replica with about 20 users in each side. So we can get an idea of the prices of the licences my customer have to buy.
Thank you very much.
James SmithsSQL 2012 license usually is per core and/or per CAL and it depends on the edition.
All editions don't impose any limit on connections but rather on maximum memory, CPUs and other features.
You need first to decide which SQL version suits your needs (and your hardware) and then call for suggestions and prices.

SQL Server 2012 Install Failure
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition with SP1 as a standalone installation. This is the downloaded version. en_sql_server_2012_developer_edition_with_sp1_x64_dvd_1228540
Here is my environment. Windows 7 X64, SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition,
I've tried to bypass the update step by executing as: "setup.exe /ACTION=Install /UpdateEnabled=False". While this did eliminate the two KB downloads, the same error still occurred.
I've extracted the ISO to my local machine and attempted the install according to another thread. Still no joy.
I installed a hotfix recommended by another thread but still no joy. System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [August 2013]

SQL Server 2012 downgrade to SQL Server 2008
Hi, we purchased license for SQL Server 2012 recently. However, we realized that some of our existing softwares could not work well with SQL Server 2012. Are we still allowed to install SQL Server 2008 in this case? Thank you.
Hello Gan
see
http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/3/D/B3DE4C1D-5A2F-4DE4-ADAC-9209BF1A1B87/SQL-Server-2012-Licensing-Reference-Guide.pdf => Page 15 = Upgrades, Downgrades and Step-Ups
Anyway, you will have a problem to bring the databases back to 2008, because it's not possible to attach/restore a 2012 database to 2008 (R2).
Have you try to change the compatibility level of the database down to 2008, if the application works then?

Hi Olaf Helper,
Thank you for the documentation :) No worry, we are not downgrading the database yet. We are still at the development stage.

Limiting no of core with Sql Server 2012
Hi All,
we are planning to use Sql Server 2012 EE on a hardware with 64 logical processors but want to limit Sql Server to use only 16 logical processors. Please assist for a solution which should also comply with MS licensing.

Restrictions on Installing SSMS and SSDT (SQL Server 2012) on multiple clients
Our company has a license for SQL Server 2012 (either Standard or Enterprise, I'm not sure which). We need to set up several client machines to manage the server and want to install SSMS on those machines. In addition, a couple users need
to be able to edit SSIS packages using SSDT.
My question. Using the SQL Server 2012 license we own, are we free to install SSMS, Books Online, and SSDT on any computer in our company, without any additional cost? We won't be installing any other SQL Server component on those machines.
If someone can post a link to the Microsoft web site that verifies that, I would appreciate it.
Russel Loski, MCT, MCSE Data Platform/Business Intelligence. Twitter: @sqlmovers; blog: www.sqlmovers.comHi,

Server 2012 Licensing Guide:
Management tools and other software identified as additional or supplemental software—such as product documentation, client connectivity tools, software add-ins, and SDKs—can generally be distributed and run on any number of devices for use with a licensed

SQL Server 2012 DB Engine does not start (clean install with server 2012 and 2008 R2)
I'm trying to do clean installation of SQL server 2012 on Server 2012 (which is runnning as a VM on ESX server) and getting this "wait on the DB engine recovery failed" message. Initially, I though this issue was related to some permission issues
but changing the permission or service accounts didn't help. I'm not seeing any "denied" messages in the log files either. Even with Server 2008 R2 (clean built VM), the installation gives the exactly the same error messages.
My setup is purely for test purpose; so, the security is not a concern. Can someone help or give me a clue where to look?

As you are telling this is a test installation process...
In the logs i m seeing the error message "An error occurred while processing the log for database 'model'. If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.".
1) If the SQL Services was installed successfully and SQL Service was not able to start because of model database issue...
1.1) If you have model database SQL back file, start the SQL Server in single user mode with minimum configuration and try to restore MODEL database
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2011/05/11/inf-hey-my-sql-server-service-is-not-starting-what-do-i-do.aspx
1.2) If you don't have backups., try to rebuild the system databases but make sure that you are not losing any data critical data on master and SQL Jobs on MSDB
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207003%28v=sql.110%29.aspx#RebuildProcedure
2) As if this is a new installation try to repair the instance with the help of setup media file
3) If the repair option fails., the last option wipe out the complete SQL Server components from Services.msc and Registries and start new installation.
4) Make sure when you are doing un-installation all the required SQL Server components on services.msc should be in stop state.
Hope this helps and let me know any questions...

SQL Server 2012 - Capacity Limits by Edition
I have a question about the capacity limits of SQL Server 2012.
The documentation http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143760.aspx points to an interesting limitation of the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition:
Enterprise Edition with Server + Client Access License (CAL) based licensing is limited to a maximum of 20 cores per SQL Server instance.
This sounds like a technical limitation. How does the Enterprise Edition know that it is running in CAL based licensing and not in Core mode? I know that older Editions like SQL 2000 had a tool to set the license mode. Is there a similar tool available for
SQL 2012?Hi Tron,
Once the decision on the licensing vector is made, the DBA or organization must decide whether to license under the Server & CAL model, or under the Core-Based Licensing model. Server & CAL has been around for years, and simply refers to the model where
one license applies for the server on which SQL Server is installed (note that multiple instances are allowed) and one CAL applies for the user or application service accessing the licensed SQL Server. One CAL is required for every user or application service
regularly connecting to SQL Server.
Please refer to the articles below for the details.

Installing SharePoint 2013 with SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition
Hi,
Can we use SQL Server 2012 Developer edition with SharePoint 2013? One thing that came to my mind was setting max degree of parallelism, is that supported in Developer edition? Looking forward to your assistance here.
Thanks,
kashifI'm slightly incorrect. See http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/4/A/64A1EC8F-F575-41E1-9D34-821FA9F98F8E/SQL_Server_2012_Licensing_Reference_Guide.pdf.
Licensing SQL Server for Non-production Use
The SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition is a full-function version of the SQL Server software—with all the
features and capabilities of the Enterprise edition—licensed under the Developer Tools model, which is a “per
user” model. One license is required for each person that accesses or uses the software.
When using SQL Server software for development, test or demonstration purposes, only the users are licensed
and there is no need for a corresponding license for the actual server systems running SQL Server software in
this case.
As long as only licensed users have access to the software, customers can install as many copies of the software
on any number of servers that are used exclusively for development, test or demonstration purposes. This
is significant, because it allows customers to run the software on multiple devices (for testing purposes, for
example) without having to license each non-production server system.
But no, as you can see above, you'll have no issues with the software (Developer Edition is Enterprise Edition with licensing restrictions, but no functionality restrictions).
