SQL Server 2012's Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) Optional Add-on?
Hi, I work for the State of Illinois and though we have progressive IT shop, we tend to be a bit behind the curve. We are still using SQL Server 2005 for all our data needs and have been planning to move to 2012 for the past two years (may actually
occur soon, even though I have been trying to influence our department to just go straight to the new SQL Server 2014). Because I was selected to work in our new Data Warehouse team, I have a keen interest in learning what I can about the PDW.
However, I suspect that just because we are moving up to 2012 does not mean that any PDW licensing will automatically be included, or does it? Can someone point me to an article on PDW licensing (I have seen something hinting at more than one
level of PDW licensing)?
Hi Ron. PDW is a scale-out SQL Server data warehouse workload on the Microsoft Analytics Platform System appliance. You can learn more about APS here (http://www.microsoft.com/aps). As for the licensing, PDW is licensed separately from SQL Server 2012/2014.

SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) Licensing
Hi All,
We have a customer that's interested in SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse
(PDW). I'm told this is an appliance sold by a manufacturer like Dell or HP. But
I also see Licensing price on the EA price list.
Can they also purchase PDW under a VL Agreement?
Regards,
DSaraoYes. Microsoft sells PDW as an appliance with a software and hardware purchase. Note that the PDW requires both the software and hardware purchase.

How to connect from InformixDB to SQL Server 2012 (and copy data)
Hello guys
I try to build a connection from an Informix (Informix2000) database to my SQL Server 2012.
I really dont know how to do this...
The plan is to build a job in the night in which data is beeing copied from the InformixDB to my SQL Server 2012
The SQL server should be like a "archive server" (same data as informix DB , but the data should stay for 2 years)
Any idea if this is possible ? (what im trying to do)
Can i do this with ODBC Connection ?
Thanks a lot and Regards, DominicThanks a lot guys... but what im trying to do is not to migrate the hole Informix DB to SQL 2012, i just want to copy some data into my SQL Server (archive). in the informix DB the data is only 30days back... i want to transfer every week
the data and let it on the SQL Server 2 years back. (SQL Server should be like an archive system)
Hello ,
Then you need to create an SSIS package to migrate data from Informix to SQL Server 2008 since Informix is old I dont know which connection provider to use but you can try ADO.NET connection provider
Can you check below link

What rights do you have on windows machine where SQL server 2012 resides, the one who you want to start stop remotely. Are you connecting SQL server 2012 with SSMS 2012 or some lower version SSMS ?

Importing Data into Sql Server 2012 from Excel Data
Hi,
I got errors like this when i am doing import data into sql server from excel Data. Can you please help us?

(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)Are you attempting to import into a newly made table or into an existing table? It looks like it's trying to insert data where it cannot be inserted (invalid column or lack of data size in your column).
Try the following:
1). In your excel sheet, highlight the whole sheet and make sure the cells are in 'text' form and try re-importing
2). save the document as ms dos TEXT and import as a text document.
3). double check your columns are correct for the data, for example if you have a column that has a string of 100 characters and your column is 'NvarChar(90)' - that might cause the error? Or just correct data type in your column
3). If that doesn't work and you're inserting into a new table, try importing it as string first and writing a query to insert columns that should be float/integer or whatever. You may want to convert float texts to a 'bigint' first rather than string
> float as that can cause problems if I remember correctly. -
Using SQLCMD need to SET NOCOUNT OFF for Sql Server Parallel Data warehouse (PDW) V2
Using SQLCMD to copy data to a flat file that is imported into Oracle using SQL Loader.
At the bottom of the files created by SQLCMD there’s a blank row (ALL NULLs) and then there’s a row that shows the total number of rows, e.g., (12571 rows affected).
SQL Loader allows us to remove headers (SKIP = 2), but it does not allow us to skip trailing records. Using the WHEN TABLE_ID != BLANKS command I can remove the blank row above the count marker, but SQLLDR still tries to load the count marker into the first
column, which fails the import.
When using SET NOCOUNT in the PDW I receive the error ‘NoCount is not a recognized option’.
Any suggestions on how to get around this and remove the trailing count?Hi Waldropj,
Thank you for your question. I am trying to involve someone more familiar with this topic for a further look at this issue. Sometime delay might be expected from the job transferring. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Adding racks/nodes to parallel data warehouse v2
Hi,
Wondering what the mechanism is for redistributing data among nodes when you add a rack to PDW V2. Recall the way mentioned to do it was backup and restore in V1 and didn't see anything new discussed on the topic at pass 2012. Thanks.Hi SQLpro26,
Could you have a look the following blog as well as the white paper for SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse?

How do you create a buffer of a geometry in SQL Server 2012?
Hello,
I am new to SQL Server 2012 and spatial data. I built a geometry object of coordinates from a polygon that I stored in a database. The code is below:
DECLARE @digb GEOMETRY;
SET @digb = GEOMETRY::STGeomFromText('POLYGON ((-79.927138 40.362654, -79.91883 40.364224, -79.915966 40.361067, -79.917897 40.359266, -79.927398 40.360142, -79.927138 40.362654))', 4269);
I am using SRID 4269 (Latitude/Longitude NAD83). I have no issues getting this geometry to load properly when the query is executed. (shown below)
My problem is that I am unable to create a valid buffer of 150 feet on this geometry. I have tried using these 3 statements below (I assumed BufferWithCurves() would be the one that would work); however, ALL of them returned to an invalid buffer of
the polygon (shown below):
- DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.STBuffer(2);
- DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.BufferWithCurves(2)
- DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.BufferWithTolerance(@BufferSize,250.0,1);
Does anyone have any idea of how creating this buffer of a geometry object (polygon mentioned above) in SQL Server 2012?
Thanks in advance for any help.
NickHi Nick,
BTW, please do ask questions on the forum, that's what it's for. I only meant "if my explanation in that specific answer was unclear, let me know and I'll clarify". Feel free to start a new thread for each topic because that way, it's
might be easier for folks to search on.
Specific answers:
I haven't worked directly with the MapInfo loader but if you're working with SQL Server, I assume what they may be doing is looking for "geodesic SRIDs" that SQL Server supports (the ones listed in sys.spatial_reference_systems) and loading those
as geography, else geometry. That may be a good thing to do.
If you want to decide yourself, here's some (short) background.
Only SQL Server (I think PostGIS might have added it) has separate geography and geometry types. Everyone else always uses "geometry" and gives you (maybe) the ability to convert between SRIDs in the database. SQL Server doesn't have
this built-in; you'd need to use a library like PROJ4.
You can use geometry type to refer to geodesic SRIDs, but it doesn't have a way to "take the area using spatial instances in decimal degrees and come up with meters". So, if you only use it to display on a map, it will display correctly.
Or close enough. Same with intersects, intersection and the like. But anything like area, distance, or, in your case buffer using a specific number of meters, you need to use geography. You could have gotten somewhat similar-looking
results with geometry by making your input to STBuffer a sufficiently small fraction, but it would be a guess on your part, not a "150 feet" buffer.
You can't CAST/CONVERT between geometry and geography because they didn't want people to assume that these would do SRID conversion. However, there is a codeplex library "SQL Server Spatial Tools" (http://sqlspatialtools.codeplex.com/) that
has two methods: VacuousGeometryToGeography and vice-versa, that does the equivalent (but optimized) of taking one type, spitting it out in well-known text format, then using it to initialize the other type. Or you can do this in your own code.
In general, geography is for anything geodesic; geometry is for planar or projected coordinate systems (e.g state plane coordinate systems in US, that don't use Long/Lat). But geography is slightly slower in calculations (like intersects) because it's more
complex than simple Euclidian geometry. And folks in other platforms are used to using "geometry" and having the platform do the (sometimes fairly expensive) conversions on-the-fly. Or maybe you don't care about the area, distance, etc.
Even in the geography type, WKT specifies (Long Lat) not (Lat Long). This is because the OGC standard doesn't distinguish and calls things (X Y), and if you think about it, (X Y) is (Long Lat) not (Lat Long). The SQL Server geography-specific method MakePoint
has latitude first as a parameter. OGC or SQL/MM standard methods and property names start with "ST" in SQL Server (e.g. STIntersects); SQL Server-specific methods and properties do not (e.g. MakePoint, ReorientObject).
Finally, attempting to do spatial calculations with unlike SRIDs (e.g. intersects between SRID 4269 and 4326 instance) returns NULL.
One more post coming on this thread with some info/links.
Cheers, Bob -
SQL Server PDW(Parallel Data Warehouse)
Dear,
There are several features which are unsupported at SQL Server PDW(Parallel Data Warehouse) version.
Such as
UDF(User Defined Function) / Extended Stored Procedure, CLR / Cursor / Trigger /
@@SPID, @@SNAME_SUSER so on.
I'm wondering when these features will be supported.
Would you let me know approximate target date or road map?
Thanks, JungwonAs far as I can tell , these features do not exist because the appliance purpose is to limit any components that can introduce a chance of performance degradation such as CLR and extended stored procedures beside also focusing on the core features for now.
The word in the street is you have have your own CLR code in a business layer while PDW is for mass data analytics.
for something like @@SPID , you should use the management web console & DMVs where they provides more rich information

SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse Appliance - Cross-domain Watcher node
Hi,
Is it supported to have the PDW appliance in one domain and the watcher node in a different domain?
If so, is a domain trust required or can certificates be used?
Thanks! Thanks for the response Mai, but it does not answer my question.
I had already read the MP guide for System Center Monitoring Pack for SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse Appliance before asking the question.
The guide identifies that all monitoring of the SQL PDW appliance is performed from a dedicated server that acts as a "watcher node". What the guide does not indicate is whether the watcher node must be in the same domain as the SCOM management
servers or if it can be located across an untrusted boundary.
In my case, the untrusted domain that requires monitoring includes the PDW appliance which has already been deployed and I plan to leverage a new SCOM gateway to simply the configuration, minimize the number of required certificates, firewall exceptions,
etc as other servers also require monitoring.
I want to locate the watcher node within the untrusted boundary and need to determine if this is a Microsoft-supported configuration or not.
Is there a more appropriate forum for this question, please?
Much thanks! -

Master Data Services not available under shared feature while installing SQL server 2012
Hi,
I am trying to install Master Data Services but do not see the option to select MDS under the shared features when going through the SQL server 2012 installation. I have the SQL server 2012 SP1 (64 bit) install files. I have also installed SP2. I havent
found anything online about the issue.
Can someone please advise?
I have a screenshot of the installation screen which I will attach as soon as I am able to get my account verified. Thanks!Hi Revees,
This might be a very naïve and also out of the original scope of the thread question.
We are thinking of going with the developer edition. We have 2/3 developers and some other testers and business users.
1) I understand that we need a developer license for each developer. But would we need a license for the business user. Can they have a sort of read access to the dbs?
2) If a developer has MSDN subscription, Would they need to purchase the license too assuming we purchase the developer edition of the software (and not download it using the MSDN subscription)?
Thanks for your assistance! -
Hi Experts,
I am trying to install sap IDES ECC 6 EhP 7 from scratch. Everything was doing well but I got an error on starting instance. SAPMMC Console Process disp+work.EXE do not change from status: "Server in State STARTING" (Yellow). I have been searching and most of the problem is related to Kernel. I upgraded Kernel to the latest version: SAPEXEDB_101-20012221.SAR and SAPEXE_101-20012222.SAR. I also check my host file and set my IP address with my computer name. I check logs dev_disp and dev_w0 but I am not able to see the error. I am installing IDES into Virtual Machine, Windows 7, SQL Server 2012, 8 Gb memory.
Best Regards.

Hi all,
Has anyone come across SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8/9 failing to install with a “Failed to retrieve data for this request.” error.
The error is too generic for a useful search on web, for me at least anyway.
Had no problems patching a whole bunch of other servers in the same environment.
I’m no good at reading these error logs. For some reason the primary replica is referenced in the detailed log???
The CU8/9 patch has been run by both Domain Admins and local Admin with no luck.
We are trying to patch a secondary failover replica. (SharePoint 2013 is installed on this server.)
This is from the summary log:
Overall summary:
Final result: The patch installer has failed to update the shared features. To determine the reason for failure,
review the log files.

IMO I strongly feel it is issue with the account. Microsoft has also documented about this for SQL Server 2008 .Have a look at following links
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2000257
Please also assign privilege mentioned in below link

Hope this helps
