SQL Server 2012 with Visual Studio 2013 with SSIS/Integration services project?
I wanted to build an integration services project to import data from multiple sources using a vendor's API.
I wish I could recall how I got to the point where I was able to build one and have it run successfully, but I had to install so many things that I honestly don't remember.
However, I noticed my PC booting really slowly after that, and I saw that I had components of VS 2010, VS 2012 and VS 2013 installed, along with SQL Server 2008 and 2012. So I uninstalled a bunch of stuff, hoping to get to where I had only the most
current versions of all, that were compatible with my corporate environment. So I was aiming for Visual Studio 2013 (Premium, I think) and SQL Server 2012.
Took me 2 days. Now I'm at the point where I think - and I'm here to learn if I'm correct - that I cannot get an oData Source component into my project and use VS 2013 IF I want to stick with Sql Server 2012. Is that correct?
I get very confused when trying to determine how the acronyms relate: SSIS, SSDT, SSDT-BI, etc.
Hi Anonymous11847,
SSDT: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2010, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2010. This can be installed when SQL Server is
installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2012: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2012.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2013: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2013.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2014
So if the SQL Server version is SQL Server 2012, we should install SSDT or SSDT-BI for VS2012 to create SSIS project.

SQL Server Express and Visual Studio 2013
In February I installed Visual Studio 2013 Professional. Looking in the Control Panel at all my installed programs, I see that I have a bunch of SQL server-related programs loaded, from the 2013 install and also from installs of previous Visual Studio versions.
I've never done a thing with SQL server express, and am completely clueless about using it. I've already wanted to take a crack at it but it always seemed too daunting, so I backed off. It seems, however, that over the years the integration of SQL Server Express
with Visual Studio is getting more and more seamless. Here is a list of all the SQL Server-related programs on my computer, with the ones installed automatically from the Visual Studio 2013 install bolded so they'll stand out. What I'm wondering is if I have
everything I need to use SQL Server Express with Visual Studio 2013:

Adding SQL Server Express to Visual Studio 2013 Pro on Windows 10 Preview
I have installed VS 2013 Pro on Windows 10. I need to delevop unsing SQL Server Express. Do I download the full SQL Server 2012 Express Advanced (with full text search), or do I need only part of it? I was going to download the SQLEXPRADV_X64_ENU.exe.
Is this a good way to go?
Do I also need to download any other .net frameworks?

I am trying to create a silent installation package for SQL Server 2012 Express Management Studio SP1. (both x86 & x64)
Prior to installation I have performed the following :
1. Turned ON the Windows feature 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1' (I had read somewhere on the internet that this is required prior to installation)
2. Installed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
I am using the following command line to perform an unattended install :
<EXENAME> /Q /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
However, the installation fails abruptly.
The application installs successfully with the following command line :
<EXENAME> /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
The error occurs only while attempting to install the application with the /Q switch appended.
Please help.Hello Fanny,
Thanks for providing the link to the SQL Server 2012 unattended install guide.
However, I must highlight that I was running the setup.exe with "Run As a Administrator" option and still facing the issue.
Anyways, I found out the root cause and I must say that it was a rather silly one.
As I had stated previously, the following command line was causing the issue :
<EXENAME>
/Q /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=Tools
I simply changed it to the following and it worked....
<EXENAME>
/QUIET /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=INSTALL /FEATURES=TOOLS
It so seems that everything must be in CAPITALS for this to work.

SharePoint Connection not available with Visual Studio 2013
I've installed Visual Studio 2013 in my SharePoint 2010 environment. When I try to add the existing SharePoint Connections I've used in Visual Studio 2010 there is always the same error: Remote SharePoint site connections are not supported. The SharePoint
site is located at the same server, I'm able to access the Central Administration with Visual Studio 2013, but I can't access my development SharePoint Web Application.
I'm sure I do have access to the configuration database, in Visual Studio 2010 I'm able to delete and add SharePoint Connections without any problems. The URL of the development SharePoint connection (like sp1.sharepoint.contoso.com) is not named like
the URL of the Central Administration (like servername:5000). The port of my development SharePoint is 80, but I can't access with servername:80 too. My account is in the group of the local administrators, Visual Studio is started as Administrator
and my account is a SharePoint farm administrator and additionally a site collection administrator of all site collections in my SharePoint web application.
Any idea what's wrong with this SharePoint connections?
Thanks in advance. GeorgCan you try the following workaround and see if it helps? First try adding host entry for your server name and if that works change it to sp1.sharepoint.contoso.com.
SharePoint
2013 Visual Studio Project Error – “Cannot connect to the targeted site”
I understand your situation is different than the one mentioned in the blog but given you seem to have all the permission so may be you try and see if the error is because of above issue. Actually if above does not work (assuming your are on your development
environment), try adding your account to DB Owner on your site collection database as mentioned here.

Any and every ideas on how to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.Three weeks passed and I am yet to find a fix for the the failed installation of the database engine on sql server 2012 express installation. I have tried various work-around including uninstalling, deleting all the directory paths, and reinstallation. Still
not able to successfully install sql server 2012 express.

SQL Server 2012 PowerView & PoverPivot in combination with SharePoint 2013
Hi,
I have been reading articles on the internet about this, and I am little bit confused. I understand this is also changed since in SP2013. Could someone with experience clarify.
1. It looks like Power View has become a part of Reporting Services and can not be installed without Reporting Services, is this correct? If this is true, then what is this
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35577 If not, why do I see a lot of links referring to PowerView as a part of Reporting Services? for example
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/615462/Configure-Power-View-Reporting-Services-Features-o
2. Do I need Analysis Services in order to use PowerView, is other words is Analysis Services a requirement?
3. Where do I run the SQL Server 2012 Setup? I was assuming that I need to run it on SharePoint in order to add and register dll's on the SP servers, they are needed in order to create Service Applications (PowerView & PoverPivot). However in pictures
on the
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/615462/Configure-Power-View-Reporting-Services-Features-o link I see they are adding features to SQL instance. So do we run it on SharePoint or SQL server? If we run it on SharePoint server, what to do with instance name?
If on SQL server, how will SharePoint server get dll's in order to create Service Applications?
4. Can SQL 2008 be used for PowerView & PoverPivot configuration databases? I mean a scenario when SharePoint has 2012 versions of PowerView & PoverPivot DLLs (i.e. PowerView & PoverPivot Service Applications created
with SQL2012 version), but configuration databases itself for these applications are in SQL 2008? I know that such a scenario was supported with SSRS on SP2010(you could simply run the SQL2012 setup on SP server and add SQL2012 SSRS, later when you configure
SSRS in SharePoint mode SQL 2008 database could be used as a SSRS configuration database)...
Thanks in advance!
Tofig1. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that there are several versions of powerview: powerview for SharePoint and PowerView for Excel. But yes, for SharePoint integration it's part of SSRS. (If you're not talking about SharePoint, then you can create
and use PowerView in Excel. No SSRS or SharePoint required. But, the link you provided is for PowerPivot for SharePoint. This provides additional functionality for folks that want to surface PowerPivot workbooks in SharePoint. (which is different than PowerView).
(PowerPivot = tabular data mode in excel = the ability to create pivottables/charts with millions of rows of data in Excel with jaw dropping performance (sorry for the advertising speak, but in my experience, it's true). PowerView = the ability to create
dashboards / eye candy / other neat visualizations like maps for data that is stored in a tabular data model (PowerPivot or SSAS in tabular mode)).
2. No. PowerView was originally designed to use "tabular data models" as their source of data. There are two ways to create a tabular data model: An SSAS instance in tabular mode, or an Excel Workbook with a powerPivot data model (PowerPivot is the excel
version of the tabular data model). So, if you have a workbook that has data loaded in through PowerPivot, you can create a PowerView report in that workbook and surface it with excel services, with no SSAS needed.
3. On a SharePoint box. The only way to install SSRS in SharePoint integrated mode is to install SSRS on a SharePoint WFE. (The databases they use will go on the SQL box, but the bits for SSRS go on the SharePoint box)
4. According to the following doc, SharePoint 2013 only supports SSRS 2012 SP1 (which means only SQL 2012):

How do I use infopath 2013 with visual studio 2013 to modify forms with code?
Dear all,
I am using sharepoint online and infopath 2013, I wonder how do I edit infopath 2013 forms with visual studio? When I try to edit form code it says I need visual studio 2012 and some other tools, I installed them and visual studio 2013, I wonder how
do I get rid of the message and start coding? Can someone provide a detailed procedure of doing so? I am having trouble with creating multiple items with single infopath form with repeating table on sharepoint online. Thanks.

Unit Testing with Microsoft Sharepoint Emulators and Fakes with Visual Studio 2013
Hi All,
I have created Test Project and now creating Test cases for Sharepoint. I found a link on MSDN which suggests using Fakes framework but it supports VS2012 and I am using Visual Studio 2013.
So how can I use it with VS2013 or is there any other way with which I can implement the Test cases with VS2013.
Please suggest.
Thanks in advance.
Himanshu NigamHi HimanshuNigam,
According to your descrition, my understanding is that you want to use Fakes framework to create test case for SharePoint project in Visual Studio 2013.
If you want to test using Fakes Framework, you can use the codeplex extension to achieve it. It supports Visual Studio 2013.
Here is a detailed article for your reference:

Sql Server Express Error Visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment
Hi everybody,
We are working with MSSQL 2014 Express edition in a Windows 8 machine, this version was working ok, but one day stopped working.
When we tried to run mssql manager tool we have the next error:
Microsoft visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment:
Unknown error
ThanksHi element111,
According to your description, unfortunately there are little information for troubleshooting. So could you please help to post SQL Server error logs ? By default, the error logs can be found in : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log.
In addition, we need to verify if you can successfully log in SQL Server via local SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). If not, please post the full error message for analysis.
Thanks,

Please share your suggestion....Hi,
If you are developing an app for SharePoint, the app can call into a user’s MySite site collection and access their OneDrive for Business documents using REST or CSOM.
The REST call to get to the file would be:
https://YourO365DomainHere-my.sharepoint.com/personal/YourUserName_YourO365DomainHere_onmicrosoft_com/_api/web/GetFileByServerRelativeUrl('/personal/YourUserName_YourO365DomainHere_onmicrosoft_com/Documents/Shared%20with%20Everyone/myDocument.docx')/$value

Problem 2) In a Query Initellisense works intermittently but most of the time it will not display anything. I have tried Edit|Intellisense|Refresh Cach size and also seperately, Edit | Intellisense | List Members but neither has helped. Also
tried different selections for Tools|options| T-SQL | Intellisense| Maximum Script Size; no luck either.Hi WallyJim,
For your first problem, possible workaround:
In Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs), right click the Microsoft Enterprise Library 5.0 Optional Update 1 program and select change. Remove the VisualStudio2010 integration.
Then, install the EnterpriseLibrary Configuration extension from Microsoft via the Extension Manager in VS2010. This will allow you to launch the configuration editor from VS2010, but will not be installed for SSMS.
For more information, please refer to
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/620532/error-message-on-new-query-window-opening.
For your second problem, the following conditions might affect the behavior of IntelliSense:
There is a code error above the cursor.
The insertion point is inside a code comment.
The insertion point is inside a string literal.
The automatic options are turned off.
For more information, refer to Troubleshooting IntelliSense (SQL Server Management Studio):

Maggie

Management Studio Fails when added Integration Services step to SQL Server Agent Job
Hi,
I have two new servers I've setup with Windows Server 2012, SQL Server 2012 SP1, Visual Studio 2012 SP4. I've previously been on SQL 2008 and VS 2008 so this is new to me.
I am finding SSMS is throwing an exception on both machines when i do the following:
1. Go to SQL Server Agent | Jobs
2. Create a new Job.
3. Select Steps and click New Step
4. Change the job type to SQL Server Integration Services Package.
Following error occurs:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
The type initializer for '<Module>' threw an exception. (SqlManagerUI)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The C++ module failed to load.
(DTEParseMgd)
Index was outside the bounds of the array. (DTEParseMgd)
I also find if I take an existing job with SSIS package steps and attempt to edit those steps the same message appears. This issue happens on both my servers as they have been configured almost identically. This doesn't occur when selecting any other job
type.
I've also tried installing cumulative update 8 in a hope that this may fix it but with no success.
As my entire environment is based around SQL Agents running SSIS i'm a little bit concerned, especially since I have some tight deadlines getting these servers running.
I have found nothing relating to this issue. Any help greatly appreciated.
Simon

at _getFiberPtrId()Hi,
I hadn't installed CU3 however as a test i tried installing CU4 and this didn't help. Since my first emails i have more issues that have brought a complete hault to the upgrade project.
If i double click on a package to run it manually I basically get the same issue. This means i have no way of running any packages except throught VS.
I've also found that regardless of the order of the software installs it still fails. It's related to SP1 of SQL and SP4 of VS.
I'm on Server 2012. When install in the following order SQL 2012, SQL SP1, VS2012, BIDS, VS SP4 i have no problem until VS SP4 is installed. If i install VS SP4 then BIDS it also fails at the last step. If i install all the VS and BIDS software first, then
SQL then SQL SP1 it fails at the SQL SP1 step.
This means i could actually install everything and either ignore the SQL SP1 or the VS SP4 and i'd be fine however this is not really a solution as i will never be able to patch the software and once live this is very dangerous.
I am still surprised there is no obvious solution to this. I'm only installing MS software on a fresh box and only installing 5 pieces of software (including the SPs). I would have though if this was an issue others would have come across it too.
Has anyone else installed all these components and got them working on the same OS. I believe early on in my testing i installed these in Windows Server 2008 and didn't have the issue.
Regards.
Simon.
