SQL Server 2014 License compatibility

I have SQL Server 2014 core base Licenses. Can I use these licenses for SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 and 2008R2 as well?

  • SQL Server 2014 CAL

    Hi Guys,
I'm planning to setup RDS and  SQL  server(2014 standard)
our application will runs on RDS box and database's will be on SQL box
As users will access the application on RDS remotely hence we are planning to apply RDS and windows CALS on RDS server
For SQL box we are planning SQL server license + cals
As sql functionality will only be accessed by RDS box through application hence i'm thinking that single device CAL for sql box will be sufficient
Could you please confirm if i'm correct or i'll needs to purchase any other license
    Many Thanks,
    Sandeep

    >Only RDS machine will be accessing SQL box so wouldn't single device CAL will be sufficient ?
    No.
Licensing SQL Server in a Multiplexed Application Environment
"Multiplexing” refers to the use of hardware or software to pool connections, reroute information, or reduce the number of devices or users that directly access or use SQL Server. Multiplexing can also include reducing the number of devices or users
    SQL Server directly manages.
When licensing SQL Server software under the Server+CAL licensing model, users and devices that indirectly access SQL Server data through another application or hardware device still require SQL Server CALs. 
Multiplexing does not reduce the number of Microsoft licenses required. Users are required to have the appropriate licenses, regardless of their direct or indirect connection to SQL Server.
Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Licensing Guide
You need one CAL per end user or end-user device connecting to the RDS server.  Whether the users run the client on their desktop on an RDS server does not affect the number of CALs required.  Similarly whether you deploy a client/server application,
an N-Tier application or a Web Application does not affect the number of CALs required.

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2010 compatibility with SQL Server 2014

Due to a requirement to use Sharepoint without Active Directory access.  I am trying to find explicit confirmation whether Sharepoint Foundation 2010 is compatible with SQL Server 2014.  I have seen that Sharepoint Server 2010 and 2013 are compatible
with SQL Server 2014 as of CU 1 (released in April).  But there is no mention of Sharepoint Foundation.
This chart is great except it doesn't mention whether the Foundation versions are supported.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg492257.aspx
    Thanks.

Note that that is for the Reporting Services component, but not necessarily for the SQL Database Engine component (which comes from the SharePoint Product Group, rather than the SQL Product Group). I haven't seen any confirmation that SharePoint 2010 is
supported at all with SQL 2014 as a Database Engine.

  • SQL Server 2014 Expired-Not allow the licensed Standard Edition SSMS

    Hi
I have installed SQL server 2014 Enterprise edition Trial version, It is expired, So i install the SQL server 2014 standard edition , now if i type ssms in my server,It show , Evaluation period has expired, guide me how to change the ssms instance
to my sql server standard edition
    Thanks & Regards Manoj

Manoj - For upgrading the evaluation edition , the only upgrade option will be to upgrade it to Enterprise Edition. There is no downgrade path for it.
Having said this, you can either upgrade to ENT edition or follow these steps:
    Take backup of User Databases
    Un-install/Remove the existing instance
Install SQL Server 2014 Standard edition and restore your databases over it
    Few important considerations:
You can restore user databases to standard edition provided you are not using any enterprise class features such
           Database Partitioning
           Data Compression
           Change Data Capture
           Transparent Data Encryption
To know whether any of the above are enabled use this query:
    SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_persisted_sku_features

  • Sql server 2005 reports with sql server 2014

Can i upload SSRS 2005 reports as it is on SSRS 2014 and use it without doing anything extra or without changing anything ??
I can use SSRS 2005 reports as it is with SSRS 2012. But for SSRS 2014 not sure.
    h2007

You can upgrade the the RDL schema will be upgraded.
Report definition (.rdl) files are automatically upgraded in the following ways:
When you open a report in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), the report definition is upgraded to the currently supported RDL schema. When you specify a SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 report server in the project properties, the report
definition is saved in a schema that is compatible with the target server.
When you upgrade a Reporting Services installation to a SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services (SSRS) installation, existing reports and snapshots that have been published to a report server are compiled and automatically upgraded to the new schema the first
time they are processed. If a report cannot be automatically upgraded, the report is processed using the backward-compatibility mode. The report definition remains in the original schema.
Reports are not upgraded when you upload a report definition file directly to the report server or SharePoint site. Upgrading a report definition in SQL Server Data Tools is the only way to upgrade the .rdl file.
After a report is upgraded locally or on the report server, you might notice additional errors, warnings, and messages. This is the result of changes to the internal report object model and processing components, which cause messages to appear when underlying
problems in the report are detected. For more information, see Reporting Services Backward Compatibility.
For more information about new features for SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services (SSRS), see
    What's New (Reporting Services).

Thanks Shanky, that fixed my issue.  I reinstalled, specifying NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSYSTEM for the SQL Server Database Engine account.  After the successful installation, I used Sql Server Configuration Manager to change the account to LocalService
(NT AUTHORITY\LocalService).  The Database Engine is restarting OK.
    So, my accounts are:
    SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER):  NT AUTHORITY\LocalService
SQL Full-text Fiter Daemon Launcher (MSSQLSERVER):  NT Service\MSSQLFDLauncher
SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER):  NT Service\ReportServer
    SQL Server Browser:  NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSERVICE
SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER):  NT AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE
    I check out the link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Serv_Perm.  I'm a bit confused how the NT Service\* accounts are created, such as NT Service\MSSQLSERVER.  However, I did see this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191153.aspx#manual;
perhaps I need to read it further.
Regardless, this is my desktop machine, the installation is for development only, it's inside our network, and no external users will be accessing this SQL Server instance.  So, while I haven't fully read the details on running under LocalService, I
believe this will meet my needs.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Problems installing SQL Server 2014 Dev on Windows 7 64 bit

I just purchases Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Dev edition from the Microsoft store, downloaded the 64bit version, and tried to install it. The install fails consistently on the Install File Setup (after the product code and accepting the license) with
    the following error:
    The following error has occurred:
Unable to open Windows Installer file 'D:\SQL2014Dev\Sqldev_eng_mar14\redist\VisualStudioShell\VC10SP1\x86\vc_red.msi'.
    Windows Installer error message: 1: 2203 2: D:\SQL2014Dev\Sqldev_eng_mar14\redist\VisualStudioShell\VC10SP1\x86\vc_red.msi 3: -2147286960 .
Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.
My system is running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, which looks like it's supported for this product.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi
Please make sure firewall is turned off when you are installing SQL Server. Also make sure you are not installing from CD drive, install it from Local Drive.
For such issues MS has released support article to fix any missing installer. You can refer to below support article

  • Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014

    Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014 ?

What sort of databases do you have OLTP? Data warehouse? What requirements do you have for High Availability?
The main features for SQL 2012/2014, as I see it:
o  Support for window functions, which makes it possible to write fast queries for running totals, sliding windows etc.
o  Columnstore indexes, which can speed up your data warehouse enormously. But of no interest for OLTP. Only writable in SQL 2014.
o  AlwaysOn and Availability Groups, a vastly improve story for high availability and disaster recovery.
o  try_convert/try_cast, you can now easily filter out values from a column which does not convert to a number. A small but essential feature.
o  In memory-OLTP, a new in-memory engine in SQL 2014. This far with very limited feature set, and quite specialised.
Of the points above, the second and third require Enterprise Edition, the first and fourth are in all editions. For the last, I don't think Microsoft has announced anything yet.
There are also new stuff in the BI area, but that's out of my league.
And, oh, there is a new licensing model - which I think is holding more than one customer back.

  • Moving databases from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2014

    Hi
I need to move all my SP 2013 databases from a SQL Server 2012 to a SQL Server 2014. I have read these articles:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(v=office.15).aspx
    http://sharepointpromag.com/sharepoint-administration/simple-guide-moving-sharepoint-content-databases-new-server
    The TechNet article says:
The new database server must run either the same version of Windows Server and SQL Server as the existing database server or one of the following versions:
    SQL Server 2008
    SQL Server 2012
    SQL Server 2014
And the article in SharePoint Pro Magazine says:
Obviously you’ll need your target SQL server (or instance) installed and configured. It should use the same version and patch level of SQL Server as the source SQL server
So I'm a bit confused. Which article is right?
    Thanks
    Jakob

it is fully supported and a simple process to move to a new sql server (anything 2008+ works).  just don't go back in versions.  you can go 2008-2012, 2008-2014, 20120-2014, just not 2012-2008, etc.
just be sure not to detach/attach the databases in sql, do a sql database backup, then a sql database restore on the new server and point sharepoint (hopefully using aliases, as it makes this all much smoother) to point to the new server.
Also, be sure to put SP1 and the April 2014 CU or newer on the farm BEFORE moving the databases.  2014 is "supported before the April CU, but there are several compatibility issues prior to april CU.  one example is that user profile sync doesn't
work properly with sql 2014 if sharepoint is not at least april 2014 CU.
hope that all is clear and helps you out, let me know if there are more questions.

  • Sql Server 2014 Problem

    Hello,
Can anyone help me that i installed sql server 2014 after installation when i open it it is asking for server name ,how to solve this problem?

    Hello,
Can anyone help me that i installed sql server 2014 after installation when i open it it is asking for server name ,how to solve this problem?
First please tell did you installed named instance or default instance. Did you installed licensed version/evaluation edition  or express edition.
You always connect to SQL Server using SSMS like
Hostname\instancename. You can go to Run type cmd and in command prompt type hostname the name returned is your hostname. Instance name is name of SQL Server instance which you created with installation ( if you created one or else it will be default instance)
If it is default instance and not a SQL Express you can just type dot. Dot like
. and can connect. If it is SQL express you can connect like Hostame\SQLEXPRESS.
If it is named instance connect like Hostname\instancename.
PS: Use account which you have added as administrator while installing SQL server as shown by Javier. if you selected mixed mode authentication you can connect by SA.

  • SQL Server 2014 purchase in UK

How do I buy SQL Server 2014 development edition in the UK?  The UK version of the MS online shop doesn't have it, Amazon UK doesn't have it, I can't find an MS Partner in the UK who sells that license.  I've tried a few other places (FR, ES)
    to no avail.
The same problem existed for SQl 2012 deveoper edition in the early days.  Does MS have a policy of not making developer edtion available in Europe until months after the other editions?

    Hello,
    Please try the following resource:
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.298540400?VID=299171800&mr:trackingCode=CB3768AE-23C6-E311-98D0-B8CA3A5D9DDA&mr:referralID=NA
Buy it there, and Microsoft Store will send it to your address in the UK.
    Hope this helps.
