SQL Server Developer Edition Licensing

SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition states that it can be used for end client acceptance testing. My question is this.
Does every end client that will be doing testing need to have a license or cal to be able to use the database for testing, or do you only need to buy licenses for the developers that will be developing against it?

Each license of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition entitles one developer to use the software on as many systems as necessary and additional developers can use the software by purchasing additional licenses
Anyway for license related questions, it is better to ask Microsoft Licensing Team directly. You might want to look at these links:

  • Can I Install SQL Server Developer Edition 2012 on Windows 8

I am just about to buy this:
    http://www.amazon.com/SQL-Server-Developer-Edition-2012/dp/B007RFXQAM
I noticed that the 2 platforms listed are Windows 7 & Vista.  I'm pretty sure it will also run fine on Windows 8, based on what I read here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
I'm wondering if anyone has actually installed SQL Server Developer Edition 2012 on Windows 8.
    Thanks!!

  • SQL Server - Developer Edition - Downgrade to standard edition

    Hi,
So the developer edition is a great way to setup a dev and test environment for pretty much nothing. But it is fully featured as an Enterprise Edition.
Now, we are using Standard Edition on our production servers.
Is it possible to install Developer Edition with only the standard edition features ?
Or to buy the developer licences and install standard edition for the test environment ?
The risk being that our devs use enterprise editions in the dev environment that would not work in production and thus add dev cycles.
    Thanks

    Hello,
Probably you can block the use of some enterprise features using Policy Based Management.

  • SSIS - SQL Server Developer to Express Edition

    Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use SQL Server Developer Edition to produce SSIS packages that will operate on a remote SQL Server Express Edition database?
The situation is such that it is easiest to install a SQL Server Express Edition database on a remote server (for use within a company intranet) due to server availability and licensing restrictions.  It would be great to be able to do Excel round trips with the data though - would it be possible to use SQL Server Developer Edition to do this on another computer, and have it update the data in the Express database?
    Thank you for your time.
    Kind Regards,
    Ray Muirhead

SQL Server Express Edition does not contain SSIS, and you cannot execute SSIS packages on a box with Express Edition. However, you can read/write to an Express edition without any limitation.

  • Upgrade from SQL server developer 2008 R2 to SQL Server developer 2012

    Hi,
We have bought 5 licenses of SQL server developer 2012.
This licenses provided us an option to use SQL server 2008 R2. And we have been using 2008 R2 till now.
But now we want to upgrade to SQL server developer 2012 edition
I want to know the process for up-gradation. When I looked at the licensing portal, it says "This product does not require a product key"
    My questions are:
    1) Should I download the 2012 version from licensing center and pass the downloaded copy to respective team members?
    2) Can the team member download the SQL server 2012 developer edition from Microsoft site and install it on their machines?
    3) Do we need to first un-install 2008 R2?
    4) How the licensing can be managed in cases of products which say "This product does not require a product key.", i.e. how can I make sure that no more than 5 installations are done by the team

    1. Developer edition has license associated with it .And yes you can download it if you have subscription. But please be informed that you cannot use Developer edition in production, its not allowed and illegal.
2.You can upgarde from SQL server 2008 R2 to 2012 developer edition by Inplace upgrade method ,you can also follow side by side approach. For side by side approach you have to get new box ,intall OS,then install SQL server 2012 ,move logins and jobs and move
databases by backup restore. You must see supported upgrades

3.No not ins any case ,please dont do that
4.Licensing question should best be asked with Microsoft licensing expert.
reg process of upgarde first run upgrade advisor and look for error if any. Then run SQL server 2012  setup and in maintenance section select edition upgrade, other process is same as SQL Server installtion

  • SQL Server Enterprise Edition installation and V3

    Hi Team,
Our trial evaluation version of the SQL Server has expired. We already have a SQL Server Enterprise edition DVD which was shipped along with the SAP ECC 6.0 (2004S) software (which we purchased from SAP).
    1. Can we install this DVD on the Discovery system?
    2. If yes, what are the steps please?
    3. If no then, what are the steps to install the demo license again?
    4. What do we have to do to upgrade to Version 3 of Discovery system? Is there any cost involved?
Please respond. Your help and guidance would be of tremendous value to us. Points would be awarded for helpful answers.
    Thanks much for your time.

    Hi Suresh,
Microsoft SQL server is an evaluation version for 180 days.
you need to have a regular database license ready after that timeframe.
That licence you get from microsoft.
Try these steps for reinstalling DB server.
    Detach the databases,
    Uninstall the SQL eval version,
Reinstall a fully licensed Enterprise addition of SQL and then
    Re-attach the db's (using the script attach_dbs.bat, step 5,in
    the Quick Guide).
This should be all that is needed.
Please make sure you back-up the system before going through all
    the steps.
You are free to upgrade your v2.0 system by downloading patches
and service packs from SAP's Service MarketPlace and applying
them to the system.  As the DS is an appliance - bundled hardware
and software , there is no automatic upgrade from v2.0 to v3.0.But
we cant assure you about the compatiability of  new scenarios
developed for V3.0 for this upgrade version of V2.0.
I suggest you  easiest way of using  a full configured V3 is
buying new Hardware. Then you will have new scenarios.
yes, you are right DS V3.0 is packed with MAX DB5.5.
Hope this information will help you,
    Best Regards,

  • SQL Server Standard Edition with Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise

    Hi there,
I need some help figuring out what will be the ideal SQL Server Standard Edition that can run all features for SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Edition. I ordered CAL licenses for a Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise Server (Supports 500 users). Now I need to find out
if it is worth upgrading SQL server to the following:
Upgrade to SQL Server Standard R2 2012 or upgrade to SQL Server Standard 2014? Basically, I am looking for the pros and cons?
    -Esteban
Microsoft manager to programmer: You start coding. I'll go find out what they want ...

    Hello,
PowerPivot for SharePoint is a feature available only if SQL Server Enterprise Edition and Business Intelligence Edition is used. Reporting Services of SQL Server Standard has also some limitations that will impact SharePoint 2013.
Additionally, SQL Server Standard Edition do not offer AlwaysON, database snapshots and online index rebuild.
To me, the biggest difference between SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition is that SQL 2014 Standard now supports 128 GB of RAM. SQL Server 2012 Standard is limited to 64 GB.

  • Inserting data to a . SDF database (SQL Server Compact Edition connection)

    Hi, all.
I'm working on a project that worked fine while connecting to SQL Server 2008. I used a connection string like this:
    Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=myServerAddress;Database=myDataBase;Uid=myUsername;Pwd=myPassword;
Now, I've replaced all database connections in my project to work with SQL Server Compact Edition, and my connection string is something like this:
    Provider=Microsoft.SQLSERVER.CE.OLEDB.3.5;Data Source=myDir\myDataBase.sdf;
After changing the type of connection, I'm getting an error on "DB Tools Insert Data.vi". This is what I get:
Error -2147217872 occurred at NI_Database_API.lvlib:Cmd Execute.vi->NI_Database_API.lvlib: DB Tools Insert Data.vi->Main.vi
Possible reason(s):ADO Error: 0x80040E30 Exception occured in Microsoft SQL Server Compact OLE DB Provider: The given type name was unrecognized. [,,,,,] in NI_Database_API.lvlib:Rec Create - Command.vi->NI_Database_API.lvlib:Cmd Execute.vi->NI_Database_API.lvlib: DB Tools Insert Data.vi->Main.vi
This is a simplified block diagram (as I said, it worked perfectly while using SQL Server 2008 connection):
    Could you please help me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Francisco

Hi, Steve. Thanks for your answers.
I worked around this problem by using directly a SQL query instead of this function (you were right, using DBTools Execute Query VI). But now I'm getting problems with other functions, when inserting data into the DB including NULL values.
I make a SQL query like this using DBTools Execute Query VI:
    INSERT INTO Table1 (Column1, Column2, Column3, Column4, Column5, Column6) VALUES ('Value1', 'Value2', 'Value3', 'NULL', 'Value5', 'Value6')
    and get the following error:
ADO Error: 0x80040E07Exception occured in Microsoft SQL Server Compact OLE DB Provider: A literal value in the command could not be converted to the correct type due to a reason other than data overflow. [,,,,,] in NI_Database_API.lvlib:Conn Execute.vi->INSERT (new) restricción (DBCT).vi->Restricciones a Base de Datos (DBCT).vi->Definir - editar restricciones.vi->Main.vi
The same SQL query worked perfectly when using the SQL Server 2008 connection, so it's not a database structure issue.
    Could somebody please help me?

    Francisco

  • Sql Server Web Edition Reporting Services errors when trying to connect to Windows Azure SQL

I am using a preconfigured image from the Azure VM Gallery to create a VM.
    --> Sql Server 2012 SP1 Web running under Windows Server 2008 R2
After configuring Reporting Services I get the following error when trying to run a report that connects to my Azure SQL db.
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
An attempt has been made to use a data extension 'SQLAZURE' that is either not registered for this report server or is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. (rsDataExtensionNotFound)
On the VM using SSMS I can connect to the Azure SQL db.  On the VM in Report Builder when I define a connection I get a similar error to the one above when I test that connection.  I am using Microsoft Azure SQL as the data source type.
Interestingly in Report Builder, if I proceed past the connection definition, I can see the tables from my Azure SQL db in the dataset definition page.
One more note.  If I use a different image from the Gallery (Sql Server 2012 Standard SP1 on Windows Server 2012) my report builder connection works and the reports run fine.  I believe that the Azure documentation says that Sql Server Web edition
is an acceptable choice for the SSRS on VM for reporting.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks -- Tom Reilly

    Hello,
A VM with SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012 supports all Reporting Services features, including all supported data sources, customization and extensibility, and scheduled report execution and delivery.
Did you run the report in Report Manager,or preview the report in Report Builder? Which version of the Report Builder you installed in the Windows Azure VM? SQL Reporting does not support reports created from Report Builder 1.0 or 2.0. You can create reports
using Report Builder 3.0 and then upload the reports.
What's more, please also check the database source credential of the report.

  • Using BizTalk Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition

    Hi All,
I would like to know what are the Drawbacks of using BizTalk Server Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition.
We are currently using Enterprise Edition.
    1) Are there any adverse performance constraints? Microsoft mentions to use SQL Server Enterprise Edition for "Optimal Performance" but does not expand on the topic.
    2) Any features missing?
    2) Is there a supported way to downgrade SQL Enterprise to Standard for an exisiting BTS Environment?
    Thanks!

    1) SQL Standard is limited to 4 CPU's and 64GB of memory while Enterprise is 8 CPU and 2TB or memory.
    2) The only BizTalk feature dependency on a SQL Enterprise feature is BAM Real-Time Aggrigations which requires Analysis Services RTA.
    3) Yes, but it's not a SQL downgrade really, you would move the BizTalk databases:
