SQL Server Expres 2008R2 on Windows 7 peer to peer network using MS Access to connect - ODBC Login Timeout

Hello,
I have had a Microsoft Access database that was running on Windows XP against a SQL Server 2000 database.  We are running on a peer to peer network.  This all worked fine.  Recently I upgraded all the systems to Windows 7 and the Access database
to Office 2013 and setup SQL Server Express 2008R2.  I am running into strange problems trying to connect the access database to SQL Server Express.
SQL Server Express was setup with mixed authentication mode.
What is strange to me is that if I run the Access database on the same server as SQL Server Express 2008R2, everything works fine. However, if I run the Access database from a separate system (Windows usernames and passwords are identical on all systems
for all accounts).  I get a spinning circle, then after 5 minutes or so I get an error box that says "Connection Failed SQL State S1-T00 - ODBC Login Timeout Expired.
I click OK and then there is a ODBC login box,  It has trusted connection  box checked.  So, I just click ok and everything runs fine.
I have checked with the Access database the ODBC connection string (How do you change this to imbed a username and pwd?) and the connection specifies that trustedconnection = yes.
I have tried setting the odbc connection up to use a SQL Account, I have setup all of the security in SQL so that Windows accounts have access and either works on the system that is hosting the SQL database.  But when I try to connect from a separate
machine we have to wait with the timeout and then click okay.
Any Ideas.
Thank you!!!

I have TCP/IP and named pipes.
I will take a look at the kb article.
What puzzles me is that odbc connection is set for trusted connection, the access database is set for trusted connection.  But yet it seems that it wants to do a SQL authentication.  Then it fails, and then if you simply hit okay to do the Trusted
Connection then it is fine.
I will read about setting the UID and PWD in code.  Been a long time since I have done that, but very doable.  Then see if the Access DB is setup with the UID and Pwd in the odbc connection string, then switch the odbc connection to be a SQL Server
connect, then maybe it will work..  Crossing my fingers.
I will be back on site next week and will give it a try then.
I will check the ports, but suspect they are fine as it works fine after it has it timed out and you hit okay to connect with a trusted connection.
Thanks for your ideas.

  • Error while installing SQL Server 2008 R2 in Windows 7 SP1 machine

    Hi Team,
Error while installing SQL Server 2008 R2 in Windows 7 SP1 machine. I can confirm this machine has .Net
Feature enabled and with Latest version.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup
    The following error has occurred:
Error 25541.Failed to open XML file C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\machine.config, system error: -2147024786
    Regards,
    Muthukumar.S.P.

    Hi,
Can you follow workaround mentioned in below msdn blog
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2007/11/01/5826719.aspx
As per the blog you have to open the msi log files which must be located at
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
In MSI log files search for the error mentioned in blog. Below link will help you read setup log files
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms143702%28v=sql.105%29.aspx
PS: Please read links carefully and patiently and if it does not solves issue please post summary.txt file and details.txt file on skydrive for analysis
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it

  • SQL Server Express compatibility with Windows 8.1 - Which version(s) are compatible?

We have purchased a new computer that has Win 8.1 Pro. We are migrating an application from a Win 7 Pro machine we are currently successfully using (the vendor migrates it for us) and they have said that the application will require the installation of SQL
Server 2008 Express (which we do have on our Win 7 machine).
In looking at the requirements for SQL Server 2008 Express (on the download page for it), it does not mention it being compatible with Win 8.1
In addition, Installation Instructions  says that it requires:
     Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1
     Windows Installer 4.5.
     Windows PowerShell 1.0
I see that 3.5 is already listed as a program feature of Win8.1 and I've enabled it. Do I need to install SP1? I downloaded it, and launched it, and nothing happened.
I also looked at the Windows Installer 4.5 download page, and it's not clear if that is compatible with 8.1. Do I need to download and install it?
Power Shell 2.0 is already installed. I assume that will be backwards compatible with PowerShell 1.0; is that correct?
I saw another question about SQL Server Express Compatibility with Win 8.1 (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/038ec00e-4fc1-41ba-9fdc-21c022aad67e/action?threadDisplayName=sql-server-express-compatibility-with-windows-81) and the response
said that SQL Server Express 2012 will work, but the link contained in the answer led to a page for SQL Server Express 2014.
My vendor has told me that SQL SERver Express 2012 will be backwards compatible with their product. But they said that I would first have to install 2008 first. Is that correct for Win 8.1?
    So, the ultimate questions are:
    1. What is the link for Sql Server 2012 Express for Win 8.1?
    2. Will the SQL Server 2012 Express download require prior install of the 2008 version
    3. What other component requirements are required for SQL Server 2012 Express, and how can I determine if they have already been installed. (This is a brand new computer with a clean Win8.1 Install).
    4. Finally, can we use the 2014 version of SQL Server Express for Win 8.1? If so, questions 1, 2 and 3 apply, too.
Thanks for your help on this!! HIGH ANXIETY.

    Hello,
The following article provides which updates are required to make SQL Server versions compatible with Windows 8 or 8.1:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562/en-us
    1. You can use the product updates feature on SQL Server 2012 to make it compatible with Window 8.1. Apply SP1 as described on the following
    article:
    http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0008.htm
    2. No.
    3. Download and install .NET Framework 4.0 and enable .NET Framework 3.5. For more information:
    http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0017.htm
    4. Yes, you can use SQL Server 2014 with Windows 8.1. Please refer to the Support article provided above.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express on Window 8.1 64 bit version?

    Hi,
I´m trying to install SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows 8.1 64 bit version. When I reach the point of "Installing Setup Files", of the installation process, the installation seems to halt. I´ve tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of SQL 2012
Express. I´ve installed SQL 2012 Express several times before on other Windows versions but I´ve never encountered this problem. Is it a known SQL Server 2012 Express/Windows 8.1 64 bit compability problem?
    Thanks in advance!
    Martin

  • SSMS for SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows Embedded 8 Standard

    Hello,
I have installed SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Tools (SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe, downloaded from MS website) on Windows Embedded 8 Standard 64-bit. But, when I try to find SQL Server Management Studio, I realized it's not installed (same installation
package works fine on my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit laptop, where SSMS gets installed). How do I fix this? And any other ways for trouble-shooting DBs on Windows Embedded 8 Standard?
    Thanks,
    Jay

Below is the content of a summary file for the installation. BTW, I also try to find its ConfigurationFile.ini file for future installation on other computers, but it's not in the folder specified in the summary file either (see below).
    Thanks.

  • SQL Server not functional after Windows Sysprep

    Hello!
I sysprep generalized a full configured Windows Server 2012 Standard copy with SQL Server 2012 configured on it but not set up using the sysprep prepare method. I only want to generalize the windows copy but have the SQL install work as previously configured.
After i boot back into the server after the generalize finishes i am unable to access the SQL server using windows authentication even after i changed the computer name and use the same user accounts as before. I have seen the sysprep prepare for imaging
documentation for syspreping an SQL instance however i already have SQL installed and i just want to migrate this install to newer hardware. Does anyone have any advice for this? Thank you.

    Hello Kabitokaii,
It seems that sql server is not recognizing your new computer name. Since your new name is different from the name when SQL Server has been installed, you have to change the also in sys.servers....
you can query the name by submitting the following statement: (once you´re told you can´t connect only with windows autentication, i`m assumin that you can connect with SQL Server autentication.)
    SELECT * FROM SYS.SERVERS.
If the names are different (from SYS.SERVERS to current machine name), you have to change is, following the bellow steps:
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2525/steps-to-change-the-server-name-for-a-sql-server-machine/
    Steps to rename SQL Server
Execute the below commands for each instance on the machine.
    -- for a Default Instance
    sp_dropserver <old_physical_server_name>
    GO
    sp_addserver <new_name>, local
    GO
    --for a Named Instance
    sp_dropserver <'old_physical_server_name\instancename'>
    GO
    sp_addserver <'new_name\instancename'>, local
    GO
    </new_name></old_physical_server_name>
     Restart the SQL Server services.
Execute the below query in each instance to verify the updated system metadata.
    SELECT @@SERVERNAME

  • Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people
have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.
I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.
I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Zack
