SQL Server Express - License Confusion
Good day everyone,
We were audited for Microsoft Installations recently and the auditing company indicated that we need to pay license fees for SQL Express installations as core components like Reporting Services have been installed with the SQL Express Instance.
Please advise if that is the case, because as far as I know SQL Server Express is free to use and free to deploy. Honestly this sounds like someone trying to make money for something that was provided free of charge to the community.
Thank you in advance for any wisdom shared.
Hello,
Have you considered calling Microsoft Licensing about this? You can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. You can also visit the following site for more information
and support on licensing issues:

Hope this helps.

Can we Install SQL Server Express with Advanced Services x 64 bit for our testing purpose without procuring any license? Also can we use it for commercial/Production
use if we are agree to take risk of using it on Production?Hi,
Yes you can, but you should be aware of the limitations of MS SQL Express version.
1. 1GB RAM
2. 10 GB database size per database excluding log file (SQL 2008 R2 and above)
3.Job Scheduling service is not available with SQL Server Express.
4.Data import and export feature is not available with SQL Server Express.
5.Limitation on number of CPU
Refer following article for features supported by different editions of MS SQL Server.

License for multi-core CPU on SQL Server Express
I would like to know is it Legal to use SQL Server Express 2008 R2 / 2012
on a machine using 6 cores CPU(e.g.Xeon E5-2440).
Thank you.SQL Express 2012 will USE a maximum of 4 cores, but there's nothing preventing you running on a server with more cores than that, it simply won't use those additional 2 cores.
For the limitations of the different versions of SQL Server 2012 see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=SQL.110).aspx#CrossBoxScale
I can't remember the exact situation with 2008 R2 unfortunately. From
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=sql.105).aspx#Scalability you'll see it's listed simply as being limited to 1 CPU with no mention of cores, so it MIGHT be the case that it will use all of that one physical CPU, but can't remember if that's
definitely the case or not. -
Having issues with getting SQL Server Express to start services and run.
Good afternoon everyone,
I have been working on a 2012 R2 server getting ready to move databases to new hardware. I had SQL Server Express 2008 R2 running on this server with no issues. I was handed another software package that ran SQL Express 2012 and had to for compatibility
reasons. I have had multiple versions run on Server 2012 before with no issues. This time, not so lucky. When the installer from the updated package put on SQL Express 2012 it completed with errors ( error log posted at the end of post) and
would not allow me to run software. I then tried the db that I had installed on 2008 R2 and it also gave the same error as the 2012 version. IN basic terms the required services attempted to start and shut back down again. I have received
Error 1068 about database handles and error %%945. I know this db has plenty of space and the permissions were added for the Admin account to access both db's. I then uninstalled both versions and tried again, with the same errors listed when
I tried to start the services. I am thinking that a clean install would fix the issue however I am not certain what files/folders/reg entries need to be deleted or modified. I have researched all the errors I can find, however I am very
new with SQL anything so I know I am missing something. I also do not have an "E:" drive on this server (not sure why it is going there). Input would be very welcome as I am not certain where to go from here.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi HMLunger,
Did you install the SQL Server instance successfully? If not, please help to post the summary and detail logs for analysis. By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
However, if you fail to start SQL Server Express service after successfully installing SQL Server,
you might have to change the paths of the files by running the following scripts from the command prompt. For more details, please review this similar
thread.
NET START MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS /f /T3608
SQLCMD -S .\SQLEXPRESS
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
go
exit;
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
NET STOP MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS
In addition, you can follow the steps in this KB article to uninstall SQL Server.

SQL Server Express 2008 and WOW64
Our software requires SQL Server Express 2008 to be installed on various computers. We have run into a problem with systems that have WOW64. When the SQL installer is going through it's check list, it marks the WOW64 as the reason that it cannot continue. In other cases I get a notification that tells me that windows installer 4.5 or higher is required but when I try to install windows installer 4.5 it tells me that the it is not the correct verson of windows installer for the system. I try a few different versions and get the same problem. I am confused as to why one windows software would not work with another.
Hi,
- Which version of Windows installer 4.5 are you trying to install ? For X86, X64 or IA64 ?
- Which version of your operation system ? Windows 2003 ? 2008 ? 2008 R2 ? .....
For information
Download the file that is appropriate for your operating system version and platform.
For Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008:
x86 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu
x64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu
IA64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-ia64.msu
For Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32-bit platforms):
x86 Platform: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe
For Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 and Windows XP 64-bit Editions:
x86 Platform: WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x86.exe
x64 Platform: WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x64.exe
IA64 Platform: WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-ia64.exe
Extract of the documentation :
Windows Installer 5.0 will be released with, and require Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7. Versions earlier than Windows Installer 5.0 were released with Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.
Windows Installer 4.5 requires Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later, and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later.
Cheers,
Michel.

SQL Server Express hosting and EULA
Hi, I have a (possibly stupid) question. I want to use SQL Server Express for hosting. It is for a small project and on a dedicated server, so I don't think there would be any problems with the limitation of express edition.
However, I have run into one formal problem:
If I look at the the SQL 2014 Express_Hosting_Redistribution_EULA (found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29693), it has section 2b. which permits hosting. But in the license terms that are in the installation, this section i missing,
so the "You may not use the software for commercial software hosting services" rule would apply.
Why is that? Is there another version of SQL Server Express that allows hosting? If so, where can I find it?
ThanksHi,
You can use Express edition for Hosting, its allowed and EULA is correct. Just because it is missing in License terms "does not means it is not allowed".

SQL Server Express 2008 instance fails to start
I've installed SQL Server Express with a named instance 'SQLSERVER2'. I was able to connect to it and reference it in the management studio. There was a problem though with Visual Studio 9 when running an ASP.NET web application that required connecting to the same instance. So, I went into the configuration manager to change the security level of the instance from network to local service. The change went through but could not restart the instance. That is what has created my next round of problems. I can't go in and change it back to network because the instance is permanently stopped. I cannot start it with the services manager. How can I fix this?

SQL Server creates a self-generated certificate if a certificate is not explicitly specified and/or is not installed. This information is saved in the profile for the SQL Server service account. If the profile has not been created then SQL cannot register the self-generated certificate.
If there are any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

What 'New Service account' are you referring to? SQL Server Express resides on my PC where I'm logged on as administrator. I don't know what you mean by connecting to the server. I only know about connecting to the database instance which is the root of the this problem because it can't be started. Sorry for my confusion... -
Connection problem in Crystal Reports for Eclipse(SQL Server Express 2008)
I tried to connect into a local SQL Server Express 2008 database in Crystal Reports for Eclipse (CR4E), but always got the Ping failed message(TCP/IP connection failed) even I tests completed successfully using my Window XP Adminstrators Tools (SQL Server ODBC Data Source Test). I can connect successfully to a remote network Oracle database in CR4E. I would like to know
that is there any one who connect SQL Server Express 2008 local database successfully in CR4E?Don,
Thanks for your suggestions. I will follow your instruction to connect to SQL Server Express 2008 database latelly. I can connect successfully with different Oracle databases (10g) in CR4E. I will try to connect MySQL database and Postgres database in CR4E to see if they can be successful or not. My project involves international entities with emphsizing in using OPEN SOURCE softwares (which means FREE - no license fees) in .NET platform for Oracle, SQL Server Express, MySQL and Postgres database servers. I am responsible for reports generation. I hope that CR4E can be connected successfully to SQL Server Express 2008 database server, otherwise I have to use JFreeReport/JFreeChart tools to do reports generation . -
What MS SQL Server Express version should I install?
Hi, I'm planning to use MS SQL Express for my LabVIEW app under Windows 7.
There are 3 versions available on the MS site: 2005, 2008, 2012. My first choice is on the latest, however I wonder if there may be any reason to choose an earlier version.
Also I wonder if the installation could conflict some way with the SQL Server Express 2005 the DSC module uses.
Sorry for my rather dumb questions but I'm not very strong on the relational databases subject.
Thanks a lot for any comment.

I am using SQLServer Express 2012 with TestStand 2012 and having no luck getting TestStand to log to the catalog that I have created based off of the standard NI SQL scheme.
When creating the tables using the build sql file I found that...
I ran ito issues with the 'constraint' SQL commands TestStand was using:
CONSTRAINT STEP_RESULT_FK FOREIGN KEY (UUT_RESULT) REFERENCES (ID))
this must actually be:
CONSTRAINT STEP_RESULT_FK FOREIGN KEY (UUT_RESULT) REFERENCES UUT_RESULT (ID))
Note.... the 'UUT_RESULT' infront of (ID), without this the statement fails.
I had to correct all the constraint commands in order to get the tables built.
Now when I try to use the catalog to log data using TestStand I get...
An error occurred calling 'LogResults' in 'ITSDBLog' of 'zNI TestStand Database Logging'
An error occurred executing a statement.
Schema: SQL Server Stored Proc (NI)
Statement: UUT_RESULT.
Description: Could not find stored procedure 'InsertUUTResult'.
Number: -2147217900
NativeError: 2812
SQLState: 42000
Reported by: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Source: TSDBLog
The procedure is present so I am confused.
FYI... I am currently using TestStand in eval mode as I am waiting on delivery, could the eval mode be the issue???
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have done this before with TestStand 3.5 and SQL Server 2008 with no problems so I am confused why it not working now.

Is this the right way to implement a database using SQL Server Express?
Purchase a single central server (if you don’t have one already) and house it in the Wild Wood Apartments headquarters located in San Francisco, California
Purchase and install Windows Server 2012 Datacenter onto this single central server.
Along with the Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, you will have to purchase a license called Client Access License or commonly referred to as CAL
Install SQL Server Express onto this single central server as well
You will then need to install remote desktop access to each computer in the 20 building complexes Wild Wood Apartments owns. This allows each complex manager to access SQL Server Express on their computer and input information into the database.
Is there anything that I would have to add on or include, am I missing something, or is something incorrect?
Thank youThis allows each complex manager to access SQL Server Express on their computer and input information into the database.
Yes, but application software must be developed or purchased.
Your design would work for a small scale database and application. More likely you need a pay SS product such as Standard Edition.

Can i use sql server express 2008, 2012, and 2014 for commercial purpose?
Good day,
I saw that the sql server express 2005 can be used for commercial purpose without buying additional license
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/8df18025-fc2b-43c2-8476-532336ff09e3/sql-server-express-for-commercial-use?forum=sqlexpress
the question is can I do the same for sql server express 2008,2012, and 2014?
can I install and use sql server express 2008, 2012 and 2014 on an azure vm? specifically
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/
A0 instance
just an off topic question, is it required to pay to use sql server on virtual machines?
why is there a different pricing here
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/#SqlHello,
Yes, you can use all versions SQL Server Express for commercial use. Please read more resources about it.

Migrating from SQL Server Express 2012 to SQL Server 2012
Hello,
I am running SQL Server Express 2012 on a Virtual Machine for my learning box.
My work load has brought me to the place where I need to be using the full blown SQL.
I have backed up my databases (in the Express instance) and am looking for an 'upgrade' path.
Can I install another instance of (full deal of SQL) on the same machine?
AndyHello,
Yes, you can perform a side-by-side upgrade by installing another instance of SQL Server (a full licensed/paid edition)
and them move the databases to the newly installed instance by using backup/restore or detach/attach.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189625.aspx
Make sure the new instance has applied the same updates/service packs of the Express instance.
You can have up to 50 instances/installations of SQL Server (standalone) on the same computer.
Alternatively you can perform an edition upgrade from Express to any licensed/paid edition.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc707783(v=sql.110).aspx
Hope this helps.

SQL Server Express - Hardware (cores) limitations ?
You find a lot of information about the physical limitations of SQL Server Express engine, but we have a question regarding the "licensing" (even when its for free ;o)))
Is it allowed to install a SQL Server Express on a physical machine with 8 cores ?
And if it's allowed, is it allowed for SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012 version ? Or are there differences because of the rather big changes in licensing model in SQL server 2012 ?Hi,
The Express edition is free and does not require license. However, it doesn't have all of the features of Standard. There are some limitations such as database size (10GB) and CPUs (1 socket or 4 cores) and SQL Memory (1GB).
You can refer to the following web page for more information:

Adding SQL Server Express to Visual Studio 2013 Pro on Windows 10 Preview
I have installed VS 2013 Pro on Windows 10. I need to delevop unsing SQL Server Express. Do I download the full SQL Server 2012 Express Advanced (with full text search), or do I need only part of it? I was going to download the SQLEXPRADV_X64_ENU.exe.
Is this a good way to go?
Do I also need to download any other .net frameworks?

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.
I have tried installing both SQL Server Express 2008 with Tools and SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.
Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and password, it says something like "The credentials you provided for the SQL Server Agent are invalid". BUT THOSE ARE THE CORRECT CREDENTIALS FOR MY ADMINISTRATIVE USER! So I'm forced to use one of the accounts without a password, like NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. That's the only way I can get past this step.
Also, just FYI, on the next step, which is Database Engine Configuration, I am using Mixed Mode for the Security Mode. I AGAIN provide a password, and then add my current user (who IS an administrator on my machine!) to the SQL Server Administrators box.
But yet, it fails every single time.
This is pathetic and ridiculous. I must have tried to install this thing 15 times, that is not an exaggeration. I'm posting this on several other forums as well, maybe an MVP or Bill Gates himself can help me.
I have one of the log files from a failed installation. If someone would like to see it, I will post it.Papy Normand wrote:

PS : if you are talking about the Sql Server Agent Service, it is disabled for Sql Server Express. It is enabled only for the Workgroup/Standard/Dev and Entreprise Editions
Sorry, but I've tried the suggestion in that link, and it hasn't helped me.
For anyone wonder, the link is talking about the problem in Server Configuration where I enter my Windows user account and password (which is in the Administrative group), but it says the credentials are invalid. The link suggests that you need to either enter your Windows account (which I did, and it wouldn't let me go to the next step), or to use one of the built in accounts (which I also tried, but it gave me the " '' is not a valid login" error during the installation).
Any other ideas?
I haven't had any answers from any other forums either, so I'll just post my log file in case anyone wants to look at this:
