SQL server service and SQL agent service

Hi all. If I am going to use a Domain User to start SQl server service and SQL agent service,
does the domain user need to  be SYSADMIN ????

No. not at all required.
Service account should have below permissions to start SQL service and Agent services.
Log on as a service (SeServiceLogonRight)
Replace a process-level token (SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege)
Bypass traverse checking (SeChangeNotifyPrivilege)
Adjust memory quotas for a process (SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege)
Permission to start SQL Writer
Permission to read the Event Log service
Permission to read the Remote Procedure Call service

  • How to add sql server (SQLEXPRESS) AND sql server Agent(SQLEXPRESS) in sql server Configuration Manager

When I had uninstall Sql Server 2008 R2, that time I had uninstalled instances (SQLEXPRESS and MSSQLSERVER) and again installed sql server 2008 r2 setup .
Before uninstalling from control panel >Uninstall program showed two setups
    1) Microsoft sql server  2) Microsoft sql server R2 , I uninstalled both.
As i installed SQL R2 again, it is showing only 1 instance ie "Microsoft sql server R2" but the other instance is some how missing -"Microsoft sql server" and
also sql server (SQLEXPRESS)  AND sql server Agent(SQLEXPRESS)  services from sql server configuration manager are missing
How to retain the missing instance and the above services?
    Plz give replay

    Hi Tushar,
I need to ask you a question here.
Why you require SQL Express edition on your machine, if there is no need you can safely ignore it and continue using SQL Server 2008 R2 edition.
Express edition can also get installed if you happen to have installed Visual Studio 2010 for instance.
If you need it then you must install SQL Server Express edition, It is a freeware and can be download from Microsoft website.

  • SQL server 2014 and Sql 2012 installation on VMWare machine

    Hi ,
Please let me know Can we Install SQL Server 2014 RTM version and SQL Server 2012 SP1 On Vmare machine version 9.
Does it Supports on VMware 9 . If yes please give me the links .
    Thanks a lot

    Hello,
You can find that on VMware Web site for their high end products only as you can see in the following URL. For VMware
    9 you won't find it.
    http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/sim/interop_matrix.php
VMware 9 is a PC product that basically allows to install any product that works on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 or earlier. VMware 9 introduces support for Windows 8 and Windows 2012.
So, SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012 should install on Windows 8/Windows 2012 RTM with no issues on a VMware 9 virtual machine. Earlier operating systems may require installation of service packs and updates as explained on the following URLs.

  • How to switch between SQL Server Express and SQL Server Evaluation

I have both SQL Server Express and SQL Server Evaluation installed on my laptop.
I am wondering how to start SQL Server Evaluation; when I click All Programs > SQL Server Management Studio, I always get SQL Server Express (which I installed on my laptop a couple years ago).
I just downloaded SQL Server Evaluation (a couple days ago).
Whenever I try to access SQL Server Evaluation, I always seem to get SQL Server Express.
Sorry if this is a trivial thing; I just can’t seem to get it to work (and I Googled for a solution before posting this).
    Thanks everyone!!

Ah!  It worked!!  This is great!!  It seems like I can connect to my version of SQL Server Evaluation, named 'EXCEL-PC\EXCEL'.
Somehow, though, I seem to keep getting errors in my BIDS when I try to run an SSIS project.  See below:
Ah!  It worked!!  This is great!!  It seems like I can connect to my version of SQL Server Evaluation, named 'EXCEL-PC\EXCEL'.
I am getting an error that VS is unable to load a document:
BIDS has to be installed by one of these editions of SQL Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation.
To install BIDS, run SQL Server Setup and select Business Intelligence Development Studio.
#1)  I recently downloaded and installed SQL Server Evaluation (specifically for the opportunity to try using BIDS and learn about this technology).
#2)  When I run BIDS > SSIS, I get the error I described above.
#3)  I have had SQL Server Express installed for a couple years on my laptop
So, my question is this: is it possible that BIDS > SSIS is picking up my SQL Server Express, instead of SQL Server Evaluation?
If so, how can I get BIDS to point to SQL Server Evaluation?
You can see in the image above that I have my BIDS Data Connections pointing to EXCEL-PC\EXCEL, which is the name of my SQL Server Evaluation.
Is this correct?  Why doesn’t this work?
I’ve spent some considerable time on this.  I’m close to just uninstalling EVERYTHING pertaining to SLQ Server, and just reinstalling SQL Server Evaluation, but this will take some time, and I don’t necessarily want
to get rid of my SQL Server Express.  However, if that’s the only way to get this working, then that’s what I’ll do.
I’d greatly appreciate any insight into this!!

  • SQL SERVER 2014 Developer - SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) - Tools in Toolbox are disabled because of bad path to DTS

    Hello all,
after populating the Toolbox of SSMS  with the "Maintenance Plan Tasks" all task are disabled. The reason is simple a bad path to the DTS modules. The path in the Toolbox points to ...\DTSTasks\... Installation has created a path of ...\DTS\Tasks\...
This is clearly a bug. But perhaps there is a workaround by changing something in the configuration. Any idea where to look for the responsible configuration file?
    Regards Uwe

    Hi Uwe,
Based on my research, just as you said, the path of Maintenance Tasks in the Choose Toolbox Items dialog box points to ...\DTSTasks\..., but the actual path is...\DTS\Tasks\....I can reproduce the issue in my SQL Server 2014, SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server
2008 R2 environments. It seems that this is a known issue. But the issue doesn’t affect the use of maintenance tasks, we can still drag the tasks to design the maintenance plan.
If you have concern about this issue, it is my pleasure to help you to reflect your recommendation to the proper department for their consideration. Please feel free to submit your situation on our product to the following link
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service provided.
As to the issue that all tasks are disabled in the Toolbox of "Maintenance Plan Tasks", please make sure that you have selected the tasks in the Choose Toolbox Items dialog box. Then double-click the task in Toolbox pane or drag the task to maintenance
    design tab.
    Thanks,

  • Difference between database features - SQL Server 2008 R2 navtive vs SQL Server 2012 with SQL Server 2008 compatibility set?

I am investigating the impact of upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. To reduce the impact of the upgrade, I am planning to restore / create our application database onto SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 (SQL Server 2008 and
    SQL Server 2008 R2).
Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?

Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?
Yes there can be difference and impact there are few features deprecated in SQL Server 2012 you must be aware about that. Please see
Deprecated Database Features in SQL Server 2012

  • Error updating data source from SQL Server ODBC into SQL Native Client 10.0

I am converting Crystal 8.5 reports into Crystal XI release 2. The data source was ODBC using SQL Server 2000 and pointing to a stored procedure. In the new server the data source has to be ODBC again, but it uses the SQL Native Client 10.0 Driver, because the new server is SQL Server 2008. I have copied the same old stored procedure on the new server and it works fine as a data source to a brand new Crystal XI report. But when I am opening an existing 8.5 version crystal report and updating the data source to the new location I get the error message "Some tables could not be replaced, as no match was found in the new data source".
I thought I could tackle this error by creating a temporary data source using the standard ODBC SQL Driver linked to the SQL 2008 Server instead of the SQL Native Client 10 ODBC. So I first updated the crystal data source to link to this temp ODBC using SQL Driver and it worked fine. But after that, when I try to update the data source to link to the SQL Native Client 10 ODBC, I get the same error again.
So I guess that the problem is not the new server itself, but the switch between SQL Server ODBC and SQL Native Client 10 ODBC.
Does anyone know what's going on with this SQL Native Client 10 in updating crystal report data sources?

CR XI does not support that driver. Try selecting the Native driver or upgrade to CR XI R2 for free and use SP4, 5 and 6 and then FP 6.4 or upgrade to CR 2008 and SP 3 and Fix Pack 3.3
    Thank you
    Don

To be specific to your question. You can very well attach SQL 2005 database to SQL server 2008 and SQL server 2012.But how your application will respond to New database will be difficult to tell.

  • [Forum FAQ] How do I disable all subscriptions without disabling Reporting Services and SQL Server Agent?

    Introduction
There is the scenario that users configured hundreds of subscriptions for reports. Now they want to disable all the subscriptions, but Reporting Services and SQL Server Agent service should be enable, so the subscriptions will not delivery reports to users
and users could run the reports and create jobs on the server.
    Solution
To achieve this requirement, we need to list all subscriptions and their schedules by running query, then use loop statement to disable all the subscription schedules by Job name.
On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server instance, and then click SQL Server Management Studio.
Type Server name and select Authentication, click Connect.
Click New Query in menu to open a new Query Editor window.
List all subscriptions and their schedules by running the following query:
    Use ReportServer
    go
    SELECT   c.[Name] ReportName,
    s.ScheduleID JobName,
    ss.[Description] SubscriptionDescription,
    ss.DeliveryExtension SubscriptionType,
    c.[Path] ReportFolderPath,
    row_number() over(order by s.ScheduleID) as rn
    into
    #Temp
    FROM
    ReportSchedule rs
    INNER JOIN Schedule s ON rs.ScheduleID = s.ScheduleID
INNER JOIN Subscriptions ss ON rs.SubscriptionID = ss.SubscriptionID
    INNER JOIN [Catalog] c ON rs.ReportID = c.ItemID AND ss.Report_OID = c.ItemID
    select * from #temp
Use the loop statement to disable all the subscription schedules by Job name:
    DECLARE
    @count INT,
    @maxCount INT
    SET @COUNT=1
    SELECT @maxCount=MAX(RN)
    FROM
    #temp
    DECLARE
    @job_name VARCHAR(MAX)
    WHILE @COUNT <=@maxCount
    BEGIN
    SELECT @job_name=jobname FROM #temp WHERE RN=@COUNT
    exec msdb..sp_update_job @job_name = @job_name,@enabled = 0
    SET @COUNT=@COUNT+1   P
    RINT @job_name
    END
    PRINT @COUNT

    Thanks,
Is this a supported scenario, or does it use unsupported features?
For example, can we call exec [ReportServer].dbo.AddEvent @EventType='TimedSubscription', @EventData='b64ce7ec-d598-45cd-bbc2-ea202e0c129d'
    in a supported way?

Assign "Log on as a service" to the service account on this computer. You can use Local Security Settings (Secpol.msc) to do this.
If this computer is a node in a cluster, check that this user right is assigned to the Cluster service account on all nodes in the cluster.
If you have already assigned this user right to the service account, and the user right appears to be removed,
check with your domain administrator to find out if a Group Policy object associated with this node might be removing the right.

  • What is the different between Sharepoint fast search service and Sql server fulltext search?

    HI ,
I want to kow what is the different between Sharepoint fast search service and Sql server fulltext search?
Or Can I abstract the Sharepoint fast search from the Sharepoint platform as a isolate component?
    Thank you.
    James

They are very, very different beasts.
Firstly FAST Search for SharePoint is the old name for the product and is only relevant for SharePoint 2010 not 2013. It got merged into the standard SharePoint search for the 2013 release.
SharePoint search is aimed at providing a Bing or Google like experience for your intranet content, as well as providing some nifty features that are purely SharePoint releated along the way. That means it can crawl SharePoint content, file shares,
outlook mailboxes, internal and external websites and probably fifty other different things if you really tried. Whilst i'm not an expert on SQL full text search I believe it's intended to provide a search feature for content held within SQL databases
    and tables.
Can you run SharePoint purely for Search? Yes, definitely.

  • Data services with SQL Server 2008 and Invalid time format variable

    Hi all
Recently we have switched from DI on SQL Server 2005, to DS(Date Services) on SQL Server 2008. However I have faced an odd error on the query that I was running successfully in DI.
I validate my query output using a validation object to fill either Target table (if it passes), or the Target_Fail table (if it fails). Before sending data to the Target_Fail table, I map the columns using a query to the Target_Fail table. As I have a column called 'ETL_Load_Date' in that table, which I should fill it with a global variable called 'Load_Date'. I have set this global variable in the script at the very first beginning of the job. It is a data variable type:
    $Load_Date = to_char(sysdate(),'YYYY.MM.DD');
When I assign this global variable to a datetime data type cloumn in my table and run the job using Data Services, I get this error:
error message for operation <SQLExecute>: <[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid time format>.
However I didn't have this problem when I was running my job on the SQL Server 2005 using Data Integrator. The strange thing is that, when I debug this job, it runs completely successfully!!
Could you please help me to fix this problem?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Thanks for your reply.
The ETL_Date is a datetime column and the global variable is date data type. I have to use the to_char() function to be able to get just the date part of the current system datetime. Earlier I had tried date_part function but it returns int, which didn't work for me.
I found what the issue was. I don't know why there were some little squares next to the name of the global variable which I had mapped to the ETL_Date in the query object!!! The format and everything was OK, as I had the same mapping in other tables that had worked successfully.
When I deleted the column in the query object and added it again, my problem solved.

  • Configuring Service Broker between SQL Server 2008 and 2012 on Intranet

Hello, I would need help in configuring Service broker. As both servers are on the intranet, I wanted to remain the most simple so I used no certificates and allowed anonymous access but still, using SSBDiagnose, I can see errors.
I would like to paste here my configuration and my usage of SSBDiagnose, I already asked a question about SSBDiagnose usage but this new question is rather on the usage of certificates and the configuration of SSB, for me to know if I am doing this in the
    best possible way.
Reading on the web, I have read in few places that certificates are not mandatory and that Windows Authentication only can be used. Then, I read that even if endpoints don't request certificates, the communication between two servers will still requires
certificates so I am wondering where is the truth...
    I have two servers:
EmployeesSvr (SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition with Always On, EmployeesSvr is the listener name in front of two virtual servers)
    CREATE MESSAGE TYPE [//E/S/ETChanged] VALIDATION = WELL_FORMED_XML
CREATE CONTRACT [//E/S/ECContract] ([//E/S/ETChanged] SENT BY INITIATOR)
    CREATE QUEUE [dbo].[ECQueue] WITH STATUS = ON , RETENTION = OFF , ACTIVATION ( STATUS = ON , PROCEDURE_NAME = [dbo].[SSB_ECQueueProc] , MAX_QUEUE_READERS = 1 , EXECUTE AS N'dbo' )
    CREATE SERVICE [//E/S/ECService] ON QUEUE [dbo].[ECQueue] ([//E/S/ECContract])
    CREATE ROUTE [RouteToSECService] WITH SERVICE_NAME = N'//S/S/ECService' , BROKER_INSTANCE = N'F...' , ADDRESS = N'TCP://SoftwaresSrv.test.com:4022'
CREATE REMOTE SERVICE BINDING [SECServiceBinding] TO SERVICE N'//S/S/ECService' WITH USER = [domain\SvcBrokerTestUser] , ANONYMOUS = ON
    CREATE ENDPOINT [ESBEndpoint] STATE=STARTED AS TCP (LISTENER_PORT = 4022, LISTENER_IP = ALL) FOR SERVICE_BROKER (MESSAGE_FORWARDING = DISABLED, MESSAGE_FORWARD_SIZE = 10, AUTHENTICATION = WINDOWS NEGOTIATE, ENCRYPTION = DISABLED)
    SoftwaresSvr (SQL Server 2008 R2)
    CREATE MESSAGE TYPE [//E/S/ETChanged] VALIDATION = WELL_FORMED_XML
CREATE CONTRACT [//E/S/ECContract] ([//E/S/ETChanged] SENT BY INITIATOR)
    CREATE QUEUE [dbo].[ECQueue] WITH STATUS = ON , RETENTION = OFF , ACTIVATION ( STATUS = ON , PROCEDURE_NAME = [dbo].[SSB_ECQueueProc] , MAX_QUEUE_READERS = 1 , EXECUTE AS N'dbo' )
    CREATE SERVICE [//S/S/ECService] ON QUEUE [dbo].[ECQueue] ([//E/S/ECContract])
    CREATE ROUTE [RouteToECService] WITH SERVICE_NAME = N'//E/S/ECService' , BROKER_INSTANCE = N'2...' , ADDRESS = N'TCP://EmployeesSvr.test.com:4022'
CREATE REMOTE SERVICE BINDING [EECServiceBinding] TO SERVICE N'//E/S/ECService' WITH USER = [domain\SvcBrokerTestUser] , ANONYMOUS = ON
    CREATE ENDPOINT [SSBEndpoint] STATE=STARTED AS TCP (LISTENER_PORT = 4022, LISTENER_IP = ALL) FOR SERVICE_BROKER (MESSAGE_FORWARDING = DISABLED, MESSAGE_FORWARD_SIZE = 10, AUTHENTICATION = WINDOWS NEGOTIATE, ENCRYPTION = DISABLED)
    My SSBDiagnose command :
    ssbdiagnose -E CONFIGURATION
    FROM SERVICE //E/S/ECService
    -S EmployersSvr
    -d EmployersDB
    TO SERVICE //S/S/ECService
    -S SoftwaresSvr
    -d SoftwaresDB
    ON CONTRACT //E/S/ECContract
    The result :
    Microsoft SQL Server 10.50.1600.1
    Service Broker Diagnostic Utility
    D 29978 EmployersSvr EmployersDB
No valid certificate was found for user domain\SvcBrokerTestUser
    D 29977 SoftwaresSvr SoftwaresDB
The user domain\SvcBrokerTestUser from database EmployersDB on EmployersSvr cannot be mapped into this database using certificates
    D 29933 SoftwaresSvr SoftwaresDB
The routing address TCP://EmployeesSvr.test.com:4022 for service //E/S/ECService does not match any of the IP addresses for EmployersSvr
An internal exception occurred: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.
Thank you for any help, I am searching for several answers :
Can I use the setup as I defined, with no certificate ?  Is it risky ?
Is there too many objects defined ?  Is it mandatory to have a Route and a Remote Service Binding ?  I don't understand how those two are working togheter...
Is it ok to use the same windows account on each side, do they only need an 'Open' access rigth or do they need to be db_owner ?
    Best regards,
    Claude

    Hi Claude,
1.Can I use the setup as I defined, with no certificate ?  Is it risky ?
Service broker does not have to use certificate. The Certificate is necessary when you want to use dialog security, by which you can encrypt all messages sent outside a SQL Server instance.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms166036(v=SQL.105).aspx
2.Is there too many objects defined ?  Is it mandatory to have a Route and a Remote Service Binding ?
Remote Service Binding is used to privde dialog security. If you donnot need the dialog security, the Remote Service Binding is not mandatory.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms166042(v=SQL.105).aspx
By default, each database contains a route that specifies that messages for any service which does not have an explicit route are delivered within the SQL Server instance. Since you have communications between different instances, creating a route between
    them is necessary.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms166032(v=SQL.105).aspx
3.Is it ok to use the same windows account on each side, do they only need an 'Open' access rigth or do they need to be db_owner ?
The windows account must own the certificate used for authentication. You can find more information below.
