SQL to work with character string

I've got a simple bit of SQL:
SELECT DISTINCT pj.NAME job_title
              , LENGTH(pj.NAME) len
              , INSTR(pj.NAME, ':', 3, 1) find
           FROM hr.per_jobs pj;This lists job titles, their length, and the position of the first ":" in the job title. E.g:
JOB_TITLE              |LEN    |FIND
Acc Asst/Auditor::::   |20     |17
Acc Asst/Auditor:A:::  |21     |17What I'd like to do is to use SQL to output the character to the right of the 1st ":" in the job title. E.g. in the above 2 rows, that'd be a ':' for row 1, and an 'A' for the second row.
I can export the job titles out to Excel and use that to do what I want, but I wanted to see if there was a way to use SQL to do it.
In Excel the LEFT() and RIGHT() functions allow me to do the trick, but I can't see how to do it using SQL. I can see that there are LPAD and RPAD functions, but I don't think they do the same job.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,
Given below is the query:
CREATE TABLE x5( c1 VARCHAR2(50));
INSERT INTO x5 VALUES ('Acc Asst/Auditor::::');
INSERT INTO x5 VALUES ('Acc Asst/Auditor:A:::');
COMMIT;
C1 LENGTH(C1) POSITION C
Acc Asst/Auditor:::: 20 17 :
Acc Asst/Auditor:A::: 21 17 A
SELECT
c1,
LENGTH(c1),
INSTR(c1, ':') position,
SUBSTR(c1, INSTR(c1, ':') + 1, 1) char_right
FROM
x5;
Hope it helps,
Muthu

  • SQL Prepared Statement with a string parameter including a colon

    Hello everybody,
    I'm recently experiencing a problem using Prepared SQL Statements if one of the parameter is a string containing a ":" (colon).
    I'm able to insert a date (as a string) record using the format "hh:mm" into a MySQL database table but when I execute the query I cannot retrieve the record.
    Does anyone know any problem with ":" character?
    Replacing ":" with "." solves the problem...
    Thanks a lot.

    Huh?
    One of the points in using PreparedStatements is that they handle the formatting for you. You shouldn't be setting dates with String values at all. Create a java.sql.Date (or timestamp or time as the case may be) and use the appropriate setXXX method of PreparedStatement. If you have String values then you can use SimpleDateFormat to parse them into dates.

  • Working with Character Styles in Photoshop CC

    Hi,
    I upgraded to Photoshop CC and was quite excited about the Character Styles Panel. But now, I'm completely puzzled.
    It almost looks like Adobe didn't finish the feature before shipping 14.1.2
    1. I can't reorder the character list? Why use a different list implementation than that for "Layer Comps?"
    2. I want to copy and paste a character style from one selection to another (Basically the workflow from Apple Keynote). It should be possible with character styles, but it just didn't work:
      - I select a formatted text section
       - I press "New Character Style icon"
       - I double-click the new style -> The font-size in the style differs from the font-size of the orginal selection?!
       - I'm pretty sure it has to do with style of the original text not being directly overwritten from "None", but there is no feature to "bake" style-formatting either.
    3. I can't remove and restyle the Character-Style "None". But when I accidently assign "None", it is defined as 12px Arial Black . So the default-style HAS a style definition and should therefore be editable like the other character styles.
    I'm completely blow away how non-intuitive the whole process is. I never had problems to understand character styles in InDesign, Pages, Word and Illustrator. But in Photoshop is either completely broken or non-intuitive.
    Just my two cents.

    Your sure your using photoshop cc on windows vista?
    I was under the impression that photoshop cc would not even install on windows vista.
    What version of camera raw do you have?
    In photoshop under Help>About Plugin does it list Camera Raw and if so which version is it?
    (click on the words Camera Raw to see the version)
    Camera raw doesn't work if it's a camera raw file or some other file type such as jpeg or tif?
    What camera are the camera raw files from?
    Officially camera raw 8.3 is the latest version of camera raw that will work on windows vista.

  • SQL statement works with SQL/Plus - but not with ODBC

    Hi all,
    I have a rather copmplex SQL statement:
    BEGIN
    UPDATE ContentDataTable
    SET SYMBOLIC_PATH_PARENT = N'/Test',
    SYMBOLIC_NAME = N'HAWK01.GIF',
    VERSION_NUMBER = 1 +
    SELECT MAX(VERSION)
    FROM
    (SELECT MAX(VERSION_NUMBER) AS VERSION
    FROM ContentDataTable WHERE
    SYMBOLIC_PATH_PARENT = N'/Test' AND
    SYMBOLIC_NAME = N'HAWK01.GIF'
    UNION
    SELECT MAX(VERSION_NUMBER) AS VERSION
    FROM RevisedContentDataTable WHERE
    SYMBOLIC_PATH_PARENT = N'/Test' AND
    SYMBOLIC_NAME = N'HAWK01.GIF'))
    WHERE SYMBOLIC_PATH_PARENT = N'/Test' AND SYMBOLIC_NAME = N'HAWK02.GIF' AND VERSION_NUMBER = 1;
    END;
    It works fine in SQL/Plus or SQL Worksheet and does what it should do ;-)
    But when using it via ADO (ODBC Driver) I get the following error:
    PLS-00103 found 'string' but expected one of the following: 'string'"}
    Any idaes?
    Thanx,
    Christian
    null

    Pardon my ignorance, but what's the significance of the N'<string>' construction? That's not one I'm familar with.

  • Working with a String

    Hi!
    Trying to teach myself java.
    String cat = new String ();I was reading about a command charAt, I would like to use this command to populate an array.
    private static final char[] animal = {};I want put 'c' in the zero spot, 'a' in the first and 't' in the 2nd. How would I do this.
    thanxs,
    Warren

    There are two ways of doing this - First off, as part of the array initialization:
    private static final char[] animal = { 'c', 'a', 't' };Alternatively you can define a char array of length three and then populate each position:
    private static final char[] animal = new char[3];
    animal[0] = 'c';
    animal[1] = 'a';
    animal[2] = 't';

  • Working with strings and cell references

    Hi all,
    I'm a fairly new user to the Mac world but I'm a power user of Excel trying to moving into the number environment. I'm currently experiencing some very inconsistent behaviour working with text strings in Numbers.
    I've used both '&' and CONCATENATE to try to concatenate strings and cell references and regualarly I'm getting the situation where the formula initially works and then when I save and reopen the file the cells containing the error return a syntax error.
    Upon examining the formula it appears that the cell references are converted from cell references to simple text so & (b2) & becomes &b2&.
    Any ideas what is causing this?

    I apoligise for this tardy response. Firstly, the issue occurred not when I first create the formula but when I save, close and reopen the document.
    Upon examining the formula, the cell reference is not being recognised and so instead of A2 referencing a cell it's simple A2 which causes an error.
    And this is happening in more than one cell (whole rows of cells actually as I've often created a formula and copied it down 10 or 200 rows).
    It is also happening on more than one file Badunit so I don't think it's a corrupt file.
    It's more than a little annoying though as it means every few days when I go back in to a file I need to spend a few minutes recreating the formulas.
    Any other suggestions?
    Oh and I've tried both methods of formula creation of typing the reference and clicking, but the result is the same.

  • Cannot get ODBC to work with Instant Client

    Hi,
    I am having problems getting ODBC working with instant client. This is what I have done so far:
    1. I installed Instant Client from this page: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/winsoft-085727.html
    The file I downloaded was: instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip
    2. Next, I installed SQL*Plus with this file: instantclient-sqlplus-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip
    Now I have SQL*Plus working with instant client.
    3. After that I downloaded instantclient-odbc-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip for ODBC.
    4. I unzipped the odbc zip file into the Instant Client folder and ran odbc_install.exe. Now I have 'Oracle in instantclient 10_2' showing up in the drivers tab of ODBC Data Source Administrator.
    5. Now, if I try to add add a DSN and choose 'Oracle in instantclient 10_2' as the data source, I get an error "ODBC Administrator has stopped working" (http://i50.tinypic.com/jifl2g.png)
    I can add DSNs using any other data source without problems. The aforementioned error comes up only when I use 'Oracle in instantclient 10_2' as the data source.
    Can someone please let me know how to resolve this?
    I am running Windows Vista Business edition 32-bit.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ubaidullah Nubar.

    Two dimensions of compatibility/requirements:
    Vertically - This is your application, APIs, .Net, operating system etc. that may define requirements on Oracle Client version, and vice versa.
    Horisontally - "on the wire" or connectivity wise - Oracle certifies client - server interoperability at least two releases or major versions back/apart, so yes, 10.2 is/was* supported. See MOS interoperability matrix for your specific case.
    (*was since 10.2 Database is out of support or even Extended support by now. Perhaps it is time to upgrade the server side also ;-))

  • ScanFile with scanning string modifier %s[in]

    For skipping over non-numeric characters by reading ASCII files I used to write, e.g.
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s[i8]>%f", &x);
    This method works well with CVI 5.0 to 8.11 but no more with CVI 2009 and 2010.  I have modified my old code using other scanning string modifiers:
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s>%s[dt#]%f", &x);    or
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s>R1= %f", &x);
    The first one does not work with a string like “R1=200”.  The second requires the exact string and is more inconvenient.  Although the modified code works well now with CVI 2009, I would like to know why the scanning string modifier [in] does not work with CVI 2009 and 2010. Is there something wrong in my code, is it a feature of the new versions of CVI or is it a bug? How about CVI 2013?

    Thank you very much for your reply.
    I would not use "%s[i8]>%f" to read the number 200 in string "R1=200".  I just wanted to take this string as an example to say that I couldn't simply change all of  "%s[in]>%f"s  in my code to  “%s>%s[dt#]%f"s, somewhere I had to use a quite inconvenient "%s>R1= %f". Therefore I do hope that "%s[in]>%f" works by a new version of CVI.
    In my code I use a lot of Scan (string, "%s[in]>%f", &x) and all of them work always correctly, also with CVI 2009-2010. But none of ScanFile (fhandle, "%s[in]>%f", &x) works with my CVI 2009, they work only with earlier versions.. That’s very strange to me as I couldn't find in the documentation/Help of CVI 2009-2010 a description that "%s[in]>%f" should not be used with the ScanFile function,
    My further tests showed that this problem seems to be related to CVI Run-time.  By reading the same ASCII file, the same executable created by CVI 8.11 works with CVI Run-time 8.1 but does not with Run-time versions 9.0 to 10.0.1.419.

    There is not a chance in the world, especially not knowing column definitions that I, and I suspect most anyone else, is going to wade through this much unformated code looking for an error you couldn't bother to copy in full.
    Either tell us, specifically, the line on which the error is occurring or, better yet, start whacking stuff out of your code until you find the offending definition. That is certainly what I would do. Commenting out sections is a marvelous way to quickly find an issue.
    Before you post again please read the FAQ. It will explain to you how to properly post and use the tags.

    You can search the forums for that error message and find previous discussions - they all boil down to the same problem.  Somewhere in your query that calls this function, the code invoked implicitly converts from string to date/datetime.  In general,
    this works in any version of sql server if the runtime settings are correct for the format of the string data.  The fact that it works in one server and not in another server suggests that the query executes with different settings - and I'll assume for
    the moment that the format of the data involved in this conversion is consistent within the database/resultset and consistent between the 2 servers.
    I suggest you read Tibor's guide to the datetime datatype (via the link to his site below) first - then go find the actual code that performs this conversion.  It may not be in the function you posted, since that function also executes other functions.
    You also did not post the query that calls this function, so this function may not, in fact, be the source of the problem at all.

  • ORA-6502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small WWV-11230

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create an UI Template. I've generated the html using Frontpage and am successfully able to see in a browser.
    I've copied the html to the UI form, but when I try to preview or execute the UI template, I get the following error:
    Error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small (WWV-11230)
    null

    I AM FACING SIMILAR PROBLEM, THE EXACT ERROR IS:
    Error: Excepcisn de wwv_generate_component.build_procedure (WWV-01821)
    No se ha podido generar la pantalla de interfaz de usuario: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small (WWV-16409)
    (SORRY , PART OF THE ERROR IS IN SPANISH!)
    I CREATED A FORM , WORKED WITH IT A LOT WITHOUT PROBLEMS. NOW I NEED TO DO SOME CHANGES ON CERTAIN FIELDS AND WHEN I TRY TO SAVE IT I GET THE ABOVE ERROR.
    THEN I GO BACK TO AN OLDER VERSION, COPY AND TRY TO DO CHANGES AND AGAIN THE ERROR COMES UP.
    THE CHANGES I AM TRYING TO DO ARE TO SOME OF THE EXISTING FIELDS IN THE FORM WHICH NEED TO BE PUT AS "INSERTABLE".
    THE SCREEN LAYOUT IS DISPLAYED WITHOUT PROBLEM.
    (THE FORM IS BASED ON A TABLE WITH APROX 80 FIELDS).
    I NEED SOME URGENT HELP. PLS LET ME KNOW ANY OTHER INFO YOU MAY NEED TO HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
    FYI I AM WORKING ON PORTAL VERSION 3.0.9 / ON Windows 2000 (DATABASE 8.1.7.0 AND iAS ARE ON DIFFERENT MACHINES).

    Hi Helios,
    Many thanks for your reply.
    I am able to figure out the issue. In the code we have
    l_analysis_report  := l_analysis_report ||'<tr><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.analysis_name
                          || '</td><td align="center">' || curr_refresh.start_time || '</td><td align="center">'
                          || curr_refresh.end_time || '</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.RUN_TIME_SECS ||
                          '</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.status ||
                          '</td> </tr>' || UTL_TCP.CRLF;
                      exit when length (l_analysis_report) > 32500;where "l_analysis_report VARCHAR2(32767);"
    The issue is report has more characters, and when executing it throws the error " ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small ".
    Can you please let me know how to have more characters/data in the report. Will CLOB help if yes, please let me know how to use it.
    Kindly suggest some options.
    Regards,
    Sunny

  • Working with clobs or extremelly large strings - please urgent

    Hi,
    i have a VARCHAR2 variable that is VARCHAR2(32767), is this possible?
    and i receive to the procedure a VARCHAR2 with almost 28000 character, then i have to insert that value as a CLOB in a xmltype table. This would look like a question to XML DB forum, but what i really need to know is how i can insert a string of that value in a table with a CLOB field. When i try i receive missing expression error. here goes the code:
    Procedure Insert_Data(xmlSTR in VARCHAR2)
    IS
         SQLStmt                                   VARCHAR2(32767);
    xmlDoc clob;
    BEGIN
    xmlDoc := 'xmltype(''<?xml version="1.0"?>' || xmlSTR || ''')';
    xml_table_name := 'XML_TABLE';
         EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'create table XML_TABLE of xmltype';
    -- EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'INSERT INTO ' || xml_table_name || ' VALUES (' || xmlDoc || ')'; --> with this expression i receive "PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type" error in compiling time.
    -- and with this i get "missing rigth parentesis" error in run time
         SQLStmt := ' INSERT INTO ' || xml_table_name || ' VALUES (' || xmlDoc || ')';
         EXECUTE IMMEDIATE SQLStmt;
    i'm working with oracle 9.2.07 in windows xp and also tried creating a table with a CLOB column and insert xmlDoc value for it, creating a loop and concatenating value from the string
    can someone help please

    You need to match your datatypes. Either insert an xmltype into a table of xmltype or insert a clob into a clob column. I have demonstated both below.
