SQLDev 4 EA2 is too unstable

We were happily using 4 EA1, despite the obvious bugs it seemed stable enough and not so slow..
We have started using EA2 since it came out, and it seems much more buggy, very slow, and very unstable - crashing several times per day on Mac OSX and Win 7 environments.  It is not obvious to reproduce these problems, and seems pretty random when it occurs.
Is there anywhere I could download EA1 from again - we cannot work with EA2, and don't really want to go back to 3.2 either.
FYI - we have been using SQL Dev since it was project raptor back in the end of 2005, but am ready to give up on this tool unless the stability / performance improves.  So many nice features, but so frustrating at the same time....arrgghhh!!

And, just as obviously, 3.1 is NOT in your repository. But as a manager what you 'want' is irrevelant; you need to have a backup plan in case the original plan goes awry. Your backup plan is to ask a forum of strangers if anyone can bail you out of your problem.
You have to accept responsibility for the risks that you took:
1) using beta software as a key component of your development process
2) not performing adequate (or perhaps ANY) testing of that beta software before destroying your existing software
3) not having a suitable way to recover if the beta software turns out to be unsuitable
4) decreased productivity of the development team having to deal with issues due to that beta software
As an individual you are free to take any level of risk that you choose. It's great that you want to help beta test a new product. But you aren't talking like an individual. Most of the statements you make use 'we':

And then the last one:
We don't backup beta software either obviously. 3.2 is in our repo, but I don't want to go back to that.
You are ready to give up a tool you have been using for 8 YEARS because the latest early adopter beta release has bugs?
That isn't a rational decision that an experienced manager would make.
My comments aren't just for you but for everyone.
Make responsible decisions.
Take responsibility for those decisions.
Always have a backup/recovery plan.
Make backup copies of key software that you use.
Don't use untested or unreliable software as a key component of your infrastructure.

  • K7N2G-ILSR: On-board video too unstable to use

    Putting together a new computer for my son.  Using K7N2G-ILSR and was really looking forward to the onboard video.  Using Athlon XP 2100 (from my prior machine -- 100 percent solid CPU) and initially bought Corsair 2700 256MB with the new board.  As an immediate downer, the board refused to work with the memory (nonstop beeping/D-LED stuff, etc.) at power up (tried all slots -- same result).  Observation: this compares very unfavorably with my highly-favorable experience with Soyo boards, by the way.  Swapped out that memory with Kingston 2700 256MB from my daughter's machine, which is running Soyo Dragon Lite.
    Ok, so after some immediate (and unnecessary) memory hassle, got system to boot.  CPU is running fine and cool at 50 deg C.
    Next (BIG, BIG) problem: Onboard Video is WAY, WAY too unstable in Windows 2000 to be usable.  At the outset, the video is showing random horizontal streaks (of trash) across the screen.  The only time I've seen that before in my 15 years of PC use is in a Diamond video card a long time ago that was also defective.  However, I can live with streaks.  The problem is that the machine crashes every time, 100 percent of the time, within 15-90 seconds of booting into Windows 2000 (SP3).  (Of course, used latest video driver from a web site, different settings, different refresh rates, and all the other usual stuff, etc., etc., etc.)  By the way, I had the patience to try this with and without SP3, and tried a zillon different bios settings.  Nothing worked -- same immediate crash problem.  Also booted into safe mode and same deal -- but at least that confirms that the problem is probably underlying hardware-related problem, not software/driver problem.  (If it can't run under generic Windows VGA driver, then it probably can't run under anything  else.)
    Only solution is to swap in an existing AGP card.  That solves the problem 100 percent but I am not exactly happy camper since I paid for the on-board video (and for budget reasons the card that I am swapping in is not exactly cutting-edge.)
    If anyone has a silver bullet fix for this, I would love to hear it.  Otherwise, I will assume that the onboard AGP is defective and/or poorly designed, whereupon I would have been better off not spending the extra money for it.  My best guess is that the memory and/or other video circuitry is defective.
    Otherwise, happy with the underlying performance of the motherboard itself but the video fiasco is a BIG letdown. :O
    Thanks.

    SILVER BULLET FOUND!!! (and it was free)  BIG, BIG, BIG cigar to Bikeman for his above post, which focused my attention on the BIOS.  Had considered it at the outset, but figured there was no way I was going to need to flash a brand spanking new board.  But when you read the BIOS update notes, one of its fixes is with Kingston memory which is currently in the board.  Recall from above, however, that Kingston was a fallback as board complained bitterly about the Corsair memory that I bought with the board.  (My daugher's Dragon Lite is quite happy with either memory.)
    So here's the rundown.  Actually couldn't see what bios ver. I had at POST as text went by way too fast.  So install live update software which confirmed that I had older v. 1.2 bios.  (Interestingly, the live update itself was old enough that it itself had to self-update before I could use).  Flashed BIOS to 1.3 using the Windows version of update, which I will report worked real smooth.
    Rebooted and proceeded to install fresh nVidia driver from nVidia website.  However, I can tell you that the BIOS was definitely the problem because before I wouldn't have been able to easily get to the point of installing video driver without 5-10 crash/reboot cycles -- so the new-found stability made it very clear that the BIOS update was the "silver bullet" I was looking for.
    Postscript impressions:  (1) MSI boards are VERY finiky about memory (which is a problem that I have never had with Soyo boards), and (2) this is the 2nd MSI board I have bought and the 2nd one that has had severe bios issues.  The first board was a low-end A socket board with AMI bios that arrived faulty/trashed -- half way thru POST, bios would start spitting out garbage ASCII characters.
    Again thanks again to Bikeman for saving me from spending any more money (on psu or other memory) and for letting my son's system now run 8X AGP.

  • Can't Use Safari Any Longer.  Too Unstable......

    I've tried everything.  I've deleted, reloaded, gotten rid of preferences, deleted all extensions, stopped using Flash and all the other suggested "fixes" all to no avail.  Safari continues to to extremely unstable and usually, right in the middle of doing something impolrtant.  I've gone to using Firefox, which isn't my favorite either, but at least it doesn't crash during use.  These problems seemed to increase/intensify with the latest update.  I can't tell you how many times I reported a "bug" but obviously, it's not a priority even noting that there are many out there with the same issues.  What's goin' on here?  This is not typical Apple!  C'mon guys and gals........let's get this fixed before there's an all out revolt and we all lose confidence with what used to be a great browser.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • CC Crashes.... rendering too unstable

    I work in TV News, and I started using Adobe Premiere Pro CC when it first became available. I was intrigued by the new features, as I felt they would be beneficial to the type of editing I do. I have to say I am extremely disappointed with how it's performed. From the start I was having compatibility issues with AVC-Intra 50 P2 video. Even after rendering and playing back at 1/2 resolution I was still having issues with dropped frames. That's assuming that rendering was even possible. Most of the time attempting to render would cause the program to crash. I should also mention that I edit on a top of the line MacBook Pro laptop that far exceeds Adobe's minimum system requirements. I found Adobe's Support system to be horrific. Posting on a forum and hoping someone will respond to your issue is a joke. I also tried to chat with a support specialist and that too was a waste of time. Attempting to get someone on the phone that understood my issue proved futile.  I'm going to revert back to CS6, which is a shame because I do need some of the features that CC has. I've come to the conclusion that CC is far too unreliable for what I do. Hopefully someday this won't be the case.

    I know the setting is in there to render h264 out of AE, but it is very inefficient. After Effects renders a frame at a time and adds it to the end of a movie. h264 encoding looks at blocks of video an determines the areas that can be discarded. This helps the final product maintain a smaller file size. Rendering h.264 straight out of AE won't give you the smallest file size or the best results.
    My recommendation is to either render out a high resolution movie and then encode it to h.264 using Adobe Media Encoder, Episode, or ffmpeg. If you are just looking to save a step, you might try rendering the the video using the h.264 settings in Adobe Media Encoder.

  • HT201263 network connection too unstable to download update through itunes

    I cannot update the ridulously large 753Mb update as the connectivity collapses on my slow netork and the Apple dowload ability to be paused doesn't work either as it goes back to zero every time.
    This has to be the worst download service on the planet and Apple only want more money to help.
    Is there any way to download the update outside of iTunes and get the update done as I can download large fles successfully from other services. It's just APple that is incapable of delivering.

    Yes I found that and dowloaded what I thought was the correct version (taking about 5 hours with multiple pauses and restarts to keep the useless download server working) only to find that it now says the version is incompatible!
    I have and iPad 3G (all the information that Apple gives out in my account when I type in the serial number not whether it is an iPad 1 or whatever) and there is not an obvious equivalent on the osxdaily.com site that matches that definition. I have to say that Apple's support of its registered customers is not exactky helpful and in fact I would say it is positively obstructive.
    Apart from the poor performance of it's website , it is clear that the restrictive practises of this company needs more scrutiny from the regulatory authorities. One day they might even understand that American English is not the only English dictionary in the world.

  • Problem with wpa_supplicant unstable

    Hello, I have some problems using wpa_supplicant. I didn't really noticed since when, because my router wasn't working for some time, but I suspect it was the upgrade to the kernel 2.6.32.
    Anyway, my connection is too unstable, very slow most of times, but sometimes fast(between 0k/s to 1500k/s), and drop after a minute.
    At the beginning, the connection is obtained slower than usual.
    And after around a minute(sometimes more), I have in wpa_supplicant logs this message:
    RTM_NEWLINK: operstate=1 ifi_flags=0x11043 ([UP][RUNNING][LOWER_UP])
    RTM_NEWLINK, IFLA_IFNAME: Interface 'ath0' added

    Already associated with the selected AP.
    In general, when I got this message after the connection(somtimes it's after the second time), the internet doesn't work anymore, even if the interface is still there, and iwconfig and iwlist scan shows the right information. There's no message in the logs, no error, no nothing. And I have to kill wpa_supplicant to reconnect.
    I wonder if anyone have the same problem, or knows why I have this "wireless event".

    Not solved, but my workaround was to downgrade to kernel 2.6.31+madwifi0.9.4096. Apparently there was nothing special to the suspicious message from the logs, as it was already there and it still works.

  • Internal Errror when saving as a png

    Hello,
    I use Fireworks to create a map with some special information. I have three layers, one contains the map itself (3 pictures), one contains a lot of circles (vectors, round about 40) and the third contains the additional text. Till now everything is fine. But when a place one more circle (vector) and I want to save my project (as png) I get the error message "Internal Error". That's it, no hint or something like that what the problem is. Does Fireworks only supports a maximum count of vectors? Or some problems with the memory, maybe the ram is to low... (Can I configure I much ram fireworks should use?)
    I work with Fireworks CS 4, Windows 7 on an Intel i7 with 8 GB ram. Thanks for your help.

    7251 x 8054 pixels? Wow. This is what causes the issue...
    Fireworks is mainly a tool for screen design. It handles pretty well files of approx. 2000-3000 px (width and/or height), but not much larger than that.
    In my personal experience, I can say that Fireworks is pretty fast and stable when file is under 2000-3000 px in size, but if once you make the file larger than 4000-5000 px, Fw can become a bit slow, sometimes unstable. After 6000 px, I rarely can work normally -- the biggest file I was ever able to edit and successfully export was ~ 9000x6000 px, but at this point Fw becomes too unstable and slow...
    Do you need such large size? Are you preparing something for screen? Maybe you can split the file into 2-3 smaller files?

  • How can I set Firefox (in about:config?) to NEVER bother me with update notifications?

    Welp, the question says it all. Or almost all of it. I DETEST the latest, MENU-LESS version of Firefox (and it DOESN'T help that, by standing on my head and spitting wooden nails in a particular direction, I CAN actually find everything contained in the old menus), and therefore I force-installed the previous version (28.0), but my problem is that I am still pestered with prompts that urge me to upgrade to version 29.0. I resent THE HELL OUT OF THAT! I resent ANYTHING NANNY-LIKE that is IN MY FACE!
    So, I thought that by setting certain app.update parameters, I could be rid of that UPDATE SCOURGE - and in fact, it seems to have worked on my Linux-only desktop - but, alas, no, it is still there, still very much IN MY FACE on my dual-boot (openSUSE & Win7) desktop PC!
    What, then, can I do to be rid of those update prompts? (Note that I am hoping that at some point in a not too distant future, Mozilla will offer, for each new version, a WUS and an I'M THE MAN variant, where the latter allows the user to steer the vehicle, as it were... if this never materializes, then at some point (when I deem Firefox 28.0 to be too unstable to use any longer), I will ditch Firefox in favor of an alternative that retains a semblance of the male's hobby-garage look (as oppose to HER slick, everything-hidden, kitchen-cabinet look!).
    Thanks!
    I am running openSUSE 13.1 in dual-boot iwith Window 7, and it is only on the SUSE interface that I am having the problem (on Win7, earlier versions allow me to tick a 'don't install anything, ever' box via preferences, rather than having to seek a solution in about:config). Right now I am using Firefox 28.0, having force-downgraded from the latest version.

    The Link I gave you above won't tweak Firefox but rather give you a brief overview on what's new in Firefox 29.
    The link below will show you how to customize Firefox 29 to look like previous versions of Firefox before 29.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-make-new-firefox-look-like-old-firefox
    I also mentioned you can toggle some prefs in about:config to disable automatic updating
    You can set these prefs in about:config to disable automatic updating:<br>
    app.update.auto - false<br>
    app.update.enabled - false<br>
    app.update.silent - false<br>

  • How did you feel about your first mac?

    As an early christmas present I received a 13 inch macbook air, 2GB RAM and 1.86GHz dual core cpu.
    I am mostly used to PC laptops running linux or often I put solaris on them. I study Computer Science and have Asperger's Syndrome.
    I got my mac as windows had too much bloatware and Linux was too unstable on my 64-bit hardware (needed 6 GiB RAM for large compilations). I was going to use the macbook air to take notes and some minor work between classes such as writing assembly subroutines, C and java. The primary use of this system was going to be as a personal assistant to have my calendar and files etc.
    The system is so powerful with a full 12 hours battery life when working on the localhost that it can out-do a 2.4GHz dual core with 6 GiB RAM PC running any OS. This system is now used for all my work due to it's capabilities and portability. After only one week with a mac I dont know how I lived without one, and my carer says it has made me show immense improvements day-to-day. I am now tempted to learn Objective-C as well as how to use Cocoa from Python to be more efficient, especially after seeing the perfection in this system.
    How did you feel when you got your first mac?

    A related question might be, what did you think about the introduction of the IBM PC?
    I had been designing digital systems and working with computers for a few years before the PC's introduction in 1981. The mainstay systems were 8 bit Z80 or 8085 machines running at 4 or 6 MHz. They ran CP/M with its command line interface. Although the maximum memory these systems could use was 64 MB, being a single user, single-task operating sytem, even the most resource-hungry programs (word processors for instance) ran very fast. CP/M itself needed only a few K.
    Dual floppy disk systems were common, 180 KB per disk unless you had double sided floppies - 360 K. The A drive booted the operating system, after which you could insert a program disk. The B drive held your data. I had one machine with a whopping 5 MB hard disk - the C drive. I treated it with special reverence.
    When rumors began about IBM producing its version of a desktop PC, many people including myself had grand expectations. Clearly Big Blue would emerge as the leader in desktop computers, since they had the resources to dictate what the standard would be. Everyone knew the others would be left in the dust. What kind of processor would it use? How much memory? Would it have a slimmed down version of the multiuser, multitasking operating system used in its System/34 minicomputer? Or would it resemble something that DEC used in its PDP-11?
    Well, when the IBM PC came out in 1981, needless to say it was an enormous disappointment. It wasn't much better than anything else I had already been using for three or four years already, except the PC was much, much more expensive. No hard disk unless you wanted to buy an upgraded power supply (more $$$) and then all they offered was 10 MB. Forget about multiple users or multitasking. It didn't even have the equivalent of CP/M's PIP. The whole thing seemed... intentionally crippled. This was supposed to be the future of computing? In my opinion it was a major step backward. The XT that followed it offered only minimal improvements. I rejected the IBM PC as not cost effective and kept using my CP/M dinosaurs.
    So, when Apple introduced the Macintosh a couple years later I finally saw, in the flesh, what I thought a computer ought to be. A totally bit mapped display, a robust 16/32 bit processor, real sound capability (everything before it could only "beep") and a true graphical UI. You could name a file anything you want, no 8x3 idiocy. +To this day+ Windows carries remnants of 8x3 filenames!
    The Macintosh blew away the PC, if not in performance, in its potential. Unlike the "crippled" PC the Mac seemed limitless. This was cool. The Mac wasn't without limitations though - there was no good way to install a hard disk for instance - but for some reason I considered those limitations trivial and believed they would be overcome in the near future. I waited for the first "upgrade" - the "Fat Mac" with a whopping 512K memory. Half a megabyte!
    I used that computer for several years, until the SE/30 came out, which I kept in service for about ten years. I ultimately expanded its memory to 32 MB while PC users were struggling with extended memory or expanded memory - you had to know which was which - to get beyond the PC's stupid 640K barrier. My 30 MB HD eventually grew small, but that was easily remedied with an external SCSI drive. Although the computer did everything I ever expected it to do, the Internet eventually made it functionally obsolete. It could run a browser (forget which one) but the black and white limitation made it marginally useful.
    I eventually replaced it with an iMac, which echoed the original Mac's introduction with its forward-thinking design. The iMac opened up a new world in much the same way the original Macintosh did in 1984.
    All my Macs still work.

    That pretty much sums it up.
    In retrospect, I believe that IBM and its marriage of convenience with Microsoft delayed the evolution of desktop computing a decade or more. I cringe whenever I think of the aggregate productivity loss and utter frustration shared by millions of PC / Windows devotees all these years.

  • Error 1722 when installing Adobe Flash Player 10.1 (Active X MSI)

    Hi,
    I'm experiencing an issue with installing the latest Adobe Flash 10.1 (ActiveX MSI) on Windows XP.
    It's coming up with error code 1722 stating...
    "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action NewCustomAction1, location: ...\InstallAX.exe, com..."
    I've tried many things such as SubInACL resets, ISScript 11 installer, adobe uninstallers, manually register ocx files, using the local administrator account, changing Internet Explorer Security settings, running Proc Mon to identify the issue - to no avail -, downloading the MSI file again, running the EXE file, but I can't seem to install the player.
    The real scary side to this is that it seems to me that it's too unstable for me to deploy it across the entire corporate network due to using these fixes to have the player installed.
    Is anybody able to comment or assist in finding a solution to this problem.
    Regards,
    SG

    Success!!
    I found the reason why the Adobe Flash Player Active X Control wasn't installing properly was due to McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise.
    The Access Protection - Anti-Spyware Standard Protection module was causing the executables (when installing) to NOT accessing specific parts of the registry to complete the installation.
    I've had to make the following changes to my McAfee policies in order to allow the Adobe Flash Player Active X Control to install successfully.
    Anti-Spyware Standard Protection - Protect Internet Explorer favorites and settings
    Processess to exclude:-
     InstallAX.exe
    FlashUtil10h.exe
    Uninstall_flash_player.exe
    You might be able to make similar changes to your environment if you're using another product.
    I hope this helps anyone who is experiencing the same issue that I was experiencing whilst trying to understand what was happening in our environment.
    All the best,
    spirosl

  • Installed Snow Leopard, and Movie Media Player Won't Work.

    My problem is literally as stated. I recently installed the new OS update, Snow Leopard for those few cave dwellers who don't know about it, and the Move Media Plugin doesn't work in Safari. If you go to FOX Network's website, you can watch full episodes of already aired shows. Before the update it worked fine, nd now with the new Safari update and everything else, it won't play large videos.
    I have allowed it to use unlimited space, uninstalled and reinstalled it, restarted the computer, and everyhting else I could think of. Anybody have any ideas?
    (This is a recurring problem, Move Media Player has had issues with Safari and/or Mac users in the past, but nobody has anything on the latest issue.)

    Any plans they would go 64 bit?
    Because I tried running a plug in in 32 bit, and after running in Safari in 64 bit for long time, I now realize that 32 bit just *****, it's horrible, it's too unstable, period. I'm NEVER running it in 32 bit again.
    Any hacks to get 32 bit plug in to work in 64 bit environment?
    I know they rely on Input manager, but that's the problem!
    Many developers are hoping for an API that works, when in reality, it's over. Apple killed Input Manager and there is no plan to release a successor plug in. It's up to the developers to now find their own way to write a code that works just like Input Manager, and it's actually really easy.

  • Displaying Images Stored on a Server In Flex

    My original idea for my app was to have live thumbnails of websites by screenshotting a html component in the app and saving these screenshots as jpgs which are applied as the source of the thumbnails. I now realise this is a bit too unstable as if the site doesn't load the images won't display. What I want to do instead is use the same idea but instead of the application writing to the application directory writing to a server where the images are stored so that it will overwrite these images.
    What I need to know is how to display server stored images in flex in either an image component or an array collection so they can be applied to a tilelist. The problem is I have zero experience at using server side data with flex. Can anyone point me in the direction to some examples/tutorials on how to display server stored data or more specifically images within a flex application or give me advice on this? Cheers.

    quick and easy way to do it would be with PHP.
    Make a script, scan a server folder and return the results in an XML format that can simply be fed into a datagrid/tilelist/whatever. To give you a few hints of what to look into.
    You'll need an initial HTTPService request fired off to the php script. The PHP script will then need to parse through the folder finding all the images, i'd recommend the glob() function in PHP to do this. eg:
    print "<images>";
    foreach (glob("directory/*.jpg") as $filename) {
        print "<screen><name>".$filename."</name><location>directory/".$filename."</location></screen>"
    print "</images>";
    then you'll need to handle the result event, simply feed each item into its respective place and ta daa.
    there are loads of examples around with this same methodology principle like this one:
    http://www.vipercreations.com/tutorials.php?t=28&page=1&c=Adobe%20Flex
    and i'm sure if you search around for 'flex php gallery' on google you'll probably even find a totally relevant example.

  • Can't find the right clipboard manager

    I need some help finding a clipboard manager that meets my needs. I'm wondering if anyone here has found an app that does these different things and does them well:
    - the obvious requirement to save a specified number of clipboard entries for future use
    - easily allow access to saved items via mouse or hotkey
    - organize saved clips into different folders or projects. For example, one with the name of my business, another with the URLs for key blog posts I continually reference in emails to clients, another with the URLs for books I recommend to clients, etc...
    - the ability to name my clips. Along with the prior requirement, these two are really important in allowing me to organize and easily use my clips. If I can't organize them into different projects or folders, then that's just not going to work. But then if the app allows me to do that but doesn't allow me to name them (like PTH Pasteboard Pro), then trying to differentiate one item from another can be almost impossible if it's a cryptic URL.
    So far, I've seen very few that do both of the last two items. I've tried Clips, and I actually like it a lot but it's a resource hog. They made it into a nice piece of eye candy but it consumes a ridiculous amount of system resources. I settled on iClipboard, and it works OK. The user interface is a little cumbersome, but then it will periodically just 'lose' one of my folders or projects and all the clips in it. That's now happened twice, hence my new search for a replacement. The app is simply too unstable to continue using.
    If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be most grateful. Thanks.

    lol, um, yeah. I've been searching for the right app for a long time now. I've probably demoed over a dozen of them. Have paid licenses to several (either through direct purchases or bundles).
    Am simply amazed that the combo of features I want does not appear to be available in anything other than Clips (which will quickly consume over 400 MB of real memory) or iClipboard (which loses my data).
    I figure there's gotta be something else out there that I'm missing. At least I hope. My requirements don't seem like that big a deal, but apparently they are since so few apps actually do them.

    My line can handle a higher Upstream but just not my lines highest, so is there
    any way BT can cap the Upstream at a slightly higher sync rate, something like
    512 kbps or etc on ADSL2?
    I asked about this a while ago but according to them, Upstream can only be
    capped down the lowest for ADSL2 it can go and they can`t cap it higher so
    this means you either have it capped the lowest on ADSL2 or uncapped.
    I don't see why they can't cap it higher like they can do with the Downstream sync.
    I am not even getting ADSL Max Upstream speeds which had a sync rate of 448 kbps.

    Hi what you have been told is correct it is a pre-set settings that they can use it will most likely have been capped at 448K

  • First attempt at a package - rstudio-desktop-preview

    Hi all - I've been interested in providing a package for the preview release of RStudio for quite some time now and I figured that I might as well just give it a shot - what's the worst that could happen.  I read through some of the threads but I guess I just want some feedback on if everything looks alright and if it would be reasonable to submit this to the AUR.  It builds for me and works great on my system.  However I feel like I cheated a little because I just modified the PKGBUILD of rstudio-desktop-bin so that it would work with the preview release; this seems sensible to me but I'm not sure if I need to give the maintainer of that package any credit somewhere.
    PKGBUILD:
    # Contributor: dasonk < dasonk at gmail dot com >
    pkgname=rstudio-desktop-preview
    pkgver=0.98.788
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A new integrated development environment (IDE) for R (binary version from RStudio official website)"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    license=('GPL')
    url="http://www.rstudio.org/ide/download/preview"
    depends=('r>=2.11.1' 'qtwebkit')
    conflicts=('rstudio-desktop' 'rstudio-desktop-git' 'rstudio-desktop-bin')
    provides=("rstudio-desktop=${pkgver}")
    options=(!strip)
    _x86md5=be7da6269c6499770957f478f4eeaf2f
    _x64md5=db2fc2ce37dc4d16e12bc95c85eaa731
    case "$CARCH" in
    'i686')
    _arch=i386
    md5sums=($_x86md5)
    'x86_64')
    _arch=amd64
    md5sums=($_x64md5)
    esac
    source=("https://s3.amazonaws.com/rstudio-dailybuilds/rstudio-${pkgver}-${_arch}.deb")
    install="$pkgname".install
    package() {
    msg "Converting debian package..."
    cd "$srcdir"
    tar zxpf data.tar.gz -C "$pkgdir"
    install -dm755 "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/lib/rstudio/bin"
    rm lib*.so.*
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    ln -s -f ../lib/rstudio/bin/rstudio rstudio-bin
    rstudio-desktop-preview.install:
    post_install() {
    [ -e $(which xdg-icon-resource) ] && xdg-icon-resource forceupdate --theme hicolor
    update-mime-database /usr/share/mime &>/dev/null
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install
    post_remove() {
    post_install
    Now I've read that just converting debian packages isn't best practice but it seems reasonable here.  I also read that you really should only provide PKGBUILD for architectures that you've personally tested on - I only tested on amd64 so should I get rid of the i386 (even though I'm pretty sure it'll work just fine)?
    Thanks for any feedback.

    Trilby wrote:There are already two (redundant) -git packages in the AUR for rstudio - what's different about this one?
    Good question!
    rstudio-desktop is built from the sources (not the binaries) but it out of date and I'm not interested in the official release
    rstudio-desktop-bin is what I based my PKGBUILD off of.  This is using the debian binaries from the official releases to install.  These only get updated every so often (not quite often enough for my liking with how quick Rstudio has been adding new features).
    rstudio-desktop-git is the git version of rstudio.  I can't get this to build at the moment and is a little too unstable for my liking.
    Rstudio provides 'preview' releases which offer a decent compromise between stability and getting the newest features.  This is what I want to offer.  Honestly if you think that this would just clutter the AUR with something that is unnecessary then I don't need to upload it to the AUR but figured that if I was interested in it then somebody else might be as well.

    In these cases it's common practice to add them as contributor.
    Note that you should put yourself as maintainer.
    i386 : you could comment those lines, and add that they may work but haven't been tested.
    you should add -bin to the name of the package.
    Thanks for the feedback! I changed the name to rstudio-desktop-preview-bin.  I added Meow as a contributor and changed myself to be the maintainer.  And actually since yesterday they updated the preview release so I upped the version and updated the md5sums. Here is the updated PKGBUILD

    case "$CARCH" in

    #_arch=i386
    #md5sums=($_x86md5)
    'x86_64')
    _arch=amd64
    md5sums=($_x64md5)
    esac
    source=("https://s3.amazonaws.com/rstudio-dailybuilds/rstudio-${pkgver}-${_arch}.deb")
    install="$pkgname".install
    package() {
    msg "Converting debian package..."

    tar zxpf data.tar.gz -C "$pkgdir"
    install -dm755 "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/lib/rstudio/bin"
    rm lib*.so.*
    cd "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    ln -s -f ../lib/rstudio/bin/rstudio rstudio-bin
    Is that how you envisioned me commenting out the i686 stuff?  Is there anything glaringly wrong with this? Thanks for the feedback and do you think it would be worth it to upload to AUR or should I just keep this to myself...
