Sqlplus throwing ORA-12560 error while tring to login

Gurus I am having logon issue when I try to logon to oracle via sqlplus. I find the same error when I use impdp or expdp utilities from command line. The error I am getting is this "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
BTW I am using oracle 10.2.0 on Windows XP and Windows 2003 machine and in the past I was able to run impdp and expdp utilities successfully on these machines.
I double check every thing, and I have the proper tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora file on my network admin directories on both machines. I also check that all the required services e.g console, database service, TNSListenerService, isqlPlus service etc is running properly too. Besides this I don't have any problem logging in with EM or Oracle sqldeveloper.
Can some one please help and shed some light on this issue.
Regards,
RJ.

Gurus I just would like to add one more point here; is it possible that this issue can be caused by symantec antivirus services installed on these machines recenlty. The reason I am mentioning it is that I have tested every thing on another machine where we don't have symantec installed and every thing is behaving as expected.
To make thing more confusing even when I disable and stop all the symantec services on the machines where I am having this issue don't make any difference.
Regards,
RJ.

  • ISql*Plus works well, but sqlplus throws ORA-12560. Why?

I installed Oracle DB 10.2.0.1 on Windows XP. After the installation, everything works like clockwork. ... well, until I installed Oracle Application server 10.1.2.0.2.
For the most part, it still works fine. But now, whenever I run sqlplus from command line, I get ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. I can still connect using the same login from iSql*Plus without any problem. Why?
Now I'm supposed to cd into a directory, fire off sqlplus and run a sql script. How do I do this in iSql*Plus?
    Any help? Thanks,
    -M

Thanks for the replies. I got the idea. I need to set
those variables myself, although I personally think
the installer should take care of that during
    installation.
Now, out of curiosity, why did iSql*Plus never have
the problem even though I didn't have any those
variables set in my environment? No idea why those aren't set automatically, but they aren't, as you found out. :)
iSQL*Plus is a web based service, and I believe it uses JDBC, not straight OCI calls.

  • Get ORA-12560 error while accessing 11g database

    Database version: 11.2.0.1.0
This is a development database running on CentOS. We had setup this database recently and everything has been fine. Today I noticed that when I connect to the database from remote, I get the following error -
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
I'm able to get in to the database after logging in directly into the database server via putty. I have stopped & restarted the database, but with no help. I have checked the environment variables (ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID) and they seem to be fine.
Can you please help on what might be the problem here? Is this something to do with some change in the OS firewall setting?

    > "UPDATE PRODUCTS SET pPrice = newPrice WHERE pID
    = productID"
The newPrice and productID are variables and you need to append them to the SQL string. Also, you need to provide single-quotes around those values.
Your update SQL should look like:
String updateSql = "UPDATE PRODUCTS SET pPrice = '" +newPrice
+"' WHERE pID = '" +productID +"' ";A better way is to make use of PreparedStatement. In that case, the sql string would be:
String updateSql = "UPDATE PRODUCTS SET pPrice = ? WHERE pID = ?"and use setString() in PreparedStatement to set the parameters.

  • ORA-12560 error in VS2010

I'm getting "ORA-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error" when trying to Add Connection in VS2010 (Server Explorer > Add Connection > Username: hr, Password: hr, Data source name: Local Database). This is sample HR database in Oracle XE 10g.
I'm guessing this could be something related to installation? My installation was like this: Oracle XE 10g which I've been using for couple of weeks. I then installed VS2010 Ultimate x86 followed by ODT with ODAC 11.2. This is on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I've noticed that ODT is installed in D:\app, while XE is in D:\oraclexe.
I can access my database through APEX interface. Running 'sqlplus' in command line issues same ORA-12560 error. Running 'Run SQL Command Line' from Start > Oracle XE 10g works. This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it? That depends on the type of client connection initiated - local IPC connection (also called a bequeath connection) or a network (TCP) connection.
For a local IPC connection to work, the client driver needs to know the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID of the local database instance - this is usually set via the environment.
For a TCP connection to work, you need an Oracle Listener running on the Oracle server, the local Oracle database instance to have registered itself with the Listener, and for the client being able to connect to the Listener via TCP.
Oracle Listener is a service on Windows - but the command line program is called lsnrctl and via it one can start/stop the listener and determine its status and registered services. With the Listener running, the local database should automatically register itself with the Listener, unless one manually changed database or Listener parameters.
For TCP connectivity, the usual applies - firewalls must not block TCP access, the client needs to resolve the server hostname into an IP (if hostnames are used), that server IP must be reachable, etc.

Sorry i am giving the full erro but omitting exact table names
    Hi ,
I have an error while taking tkprof of a trace file.
I gave the following command ---
    tkprof <source.trc> <file.prc> sys=no sort=exeela,fchela,prsela explain= /
    error is --
Error in create table of EXPLAIN PLAN table : unix_session_user.prof$paln_table

i searched for the error and in oracle forum i found a solution .. http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=844287&tstart=0
but after giving the table option it is giving the same error
    tkprof <source.trc> <file.prc> sys=no sort=exeela,fchela,prsela table=old_schema.plan_table explain= /
it again gave the same error.
In both two cases it gives elapsed time results, library cache missing etc but before giving this it throws ORA-00604 error as stated above
then i again correct the tkprof statement ..
    tkprof <source.trc> <file.prc> sys=no sort=exeela,fchela,prsela table=new_schema.plan_table explain= /
say this schema name here i used is dummy schema name.
My question is did this error came as we had not sufficient previlages in the old_schema but that previleges we have in new_schema?
    My databse version is 9.2.0.4.0
    Thanks in advance

Please post here full error message, there should be lines with ORA-00604 and then some other ORA as well.
And are there any trace files generated during this error?
And as You can see from error description, probably You will have to contact with Oracle support in order to solve this case:
    oerr ora 00604
00604, 00000, "error occurred at recursive SQL level %s"
// *Cause:  An error occurred while processing a recursive SQL statement

// *Action: If the situation described in the next error on the stack
// can be corrected, do so; otherwise contact Oracle Support.

You can create the database with WE8DEC character set
and to use the WE8ISO8859P9 on the client or even on Linux.
The NLS_LANG setting doesn't effect the database, but the
interface with the database. The same setting can be used in de
    windows 95/98/NT registry.

Dan Hoover An ORA-12560 WinNT is usually an indication that
the OS system/environment is not set up correctly.
You don't need a listener when you connect locallay without alias
    name (sqlplus scott/tiger@alias).
    Please try the following:
    - start cmd box
    - set ORACLE_HOME = <your home>
    - set ORACLE_SID = <your SID>

  • ORA-12560 problem while installing 8.1.7

I have a HP Netserver LC2000 with 256MB RAM and Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services enabled. I downloaded a trial copy of the Oracle 8i3 (8.1.7) database from the OTN website and tried to install it. I have to mention that I tried a TYPICAL install on the machine console, not from a remote terminal client. And I had a problem.
Universal Installer copied all the files and invoked the optional parts configuration. Then it configured network successfully, it configured Apache web server successfully, but it halted for a long while trying to make the starter database and resulted with error. I clicked Retry and again the same.
The I cancelled and the installation finished as if successful, but without the database and its service. When I try svrmgrl from command prompt I get an ORA-12560 error.
When I try to invoke the DBCA (database configuration assistant) by myself it fails to create either a typical or a custom specified database (I suppose it's the same problem).
Anyone has any thoughts on this?
    null

    When you create the service
    and start it, everything should
work just fineActually it doesn't. I uninstalled Terminal Services, and maybe because of that, and maybe because of something else, I managed to create a customized database with the Database Configuration Assistant. So, now the problem is solved partly. When I run
    svrgrml
it starts and I can connect to the database.
But if I try to connect from another PC, I can't get through. I get these messages:
    ORA-01034: Oracle not available
The help says that SGA was not started, then how am I able to connect local, and also it says to check the next message, which is:
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Cause: Unable to locate shared memory realm.
Action: Verify that the realm is accessible.
BUT!!!! This is is located in the help files under Unix messages!!?!?!?! I have installed it under Linux and I know where and how and what to check for SHM parameters. But under Windows2000?!!?
    I'm confused.

    Hello,
We are facing the ORA-12571 error while creating / replacing packages from Windows Clients connected to a 8.1.7.2.0 db on a Solaris server.
    However, there are
    1. no errors in connecting and creating transactions from a Sql session

    3. no errors in connecting from a Unix session (remote telnet sessions inclusive).

Can somebody help me resolve this issue. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I had unintentionally left my custom tablespace in READONLY state after an earlier experiment with transportable tablespaces. After putting the tablespace back into READ WRITE mode and creating a new template, I was successfully able to create a new db from the template.
I'm still a little curious why this procedure wouldn't work properly with a READONLY tablespace, however.

    Hi,
undo tablespace UNDOTBS1 datafile 'D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\ORACLE5 \datafile\undotbs1.dbf' size 10m autoextend on maxsize unlimited
After ORACLE5 there is a space character. Typo? Create proper directory or delete this character.
