"squares" in text?

I use Acrobat 8. When I edit and save a PDF, I get "squares" instead of letters throughout the document. Anyone have a solution?

Your system does not have the requisite (what ever they are) fonts installed.

I am working on a clients art in InDesign
some of the text has gold squares behind it (not always the entire word)
    what does this mean
I know pink means font is missing
    but have never seen this

Glyph replacement highlight. Looks like you chose all caps for style.
Check your prefs under composition if you want to turn it off.

  • On many websites I am seeing all A's in squares for text.

    Hello
I am seeing all of the text as the letter A in a square. This is happening on quite a few websites. One major site is YouTube. All of the overlaid text on the videos is showing up this way.
Do I have a corrupt font? Am I missing a font? I have no idea how to diagnose or fix this issue, but it's quite annoying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Cooch

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • How to square up texts and flow through these pages ?

    Hi!
I have to square up and shading numerous paragraphs of different loguitudes in Indesign CS6 .
These have them identified in the xml for tag
Often there tour of pages in second tests so I thought convert a table but not if it is the best solution because no party cells and lose a lot of time adjusting the pages so you are not left me out of square .
Can you think of any other solution that does not require much manual work ?
    Thank You

    Hi
I am not sure about your question 1 exactly (may be you can elaborate) but you cannot probably track that information module wise.
For the second question, you can count the number of httpd processes in 11i and get a estimate of how busy the system is . there wont be one to one mapping between client and application server connections but you can check the access logs if you are troubleshooting an issue.

  • What's with all of the squares of text that pop up?

I just bought my first mac in over 4 years. What is with all of the pop ups? I disabled the tool tips in Firefox, but I still get white boxes that pop up at the oddest times. What can I do to disable them? Some of them seem to be connected to Flash Player.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. They're driving me crazy! I'm running Lion.

Can you tell if these are generated by the browser (i.e. ads or browser-specific tooltips), or are they generated by the operating system or component, such as Java?
I unfortunately don't have an answer for you, but I am using Safari, and I get random Java po-up windows causing anything full-screen to jump back to normal view, etc.  If you're having the same issues as I am, then I'd be happy to get an answer as well.  I've updated to the latest OS release from Apple, updated my Java, flash, etc.  I'm still getting pop-up windows.  The windows, however, close by themselves.  They pop up for only a second or so, and then close.
    Same issue?

Yesterday I was sending out repeat emails to customers. It was the same content, I just click sent again and changed the email address and the customers name on the content page. After a while I was being rejected by my server and a que was formed in the outbox. On checking the emails they had squares but text or underlines.
Any had this? Now I have it all the time when I return a reply to an email?

  • Why is it necessary to have the boilerplate text in every email?

    This one:
    >This message was sent to: p taz
    >To post a reply to the thread message, either reply to this email (recommended) or visit the message page: http://forums.adobe.com/message
    >/1906449#1906449
    >If you post by replying to this email, be sure to leave the square-bracketed text at the end of the subject line as it is. This will help ensure that >your message is posted correctly.
Firstly, it just highlights the dodgy-looking thing with the subject line, and secondly, I usually automatically flag any post with my name in it in case I need to respond to someone but now EVERY email that comes in gets flagged and I cannot (automatically) differentiate between high and low priority emails.
Really, guys, was there a point to that or did the page just look too empty!  Of course I know who you posted it to, I am reading it!!!!!!

If at the first place I am getting all the methods synchronized by calling
    Collection c = Collections.synchronizedCollection(myCollection);
that means no two threads can enter the data structure of this collection, I am not getting how ConcurrentModificationException will be thrown while iterating thru this collection?
Can u please explain in a little depth?

  • Unwanted small boxes/squares in PDF

When I convert my files from FreeHand MX to PDF using the
Export command, I get tiny squares on most of the pages. These tiny
squares are inline with the text and usually occur where there is a
tab. Sometimes they are at the end of the line where there is a
return. It's not on all of the pages.
The squares show up in Adobe Reader 9.0.0
These squares do NOT show up in Adobe Reader 7.1.0
The squares show up in Preview 3.0.9
It's a document that I update and convert to PDF every year
and have not had problems until this year.
I suspect that the squares have alwasy been there, but have
not shown up until this latest version of PDF viewer.
I need to get rid of these squares so I can send the PDF to a
professional printer to be printed. The squares show up at the
    professional printer. Can anyone help?
Does this mean it's finally time to upgrade to Illustrator?

The red squares are text overflow boxes in Adobe applications, which use a different text engine than FreeHand.
You can avoid the overflow boxes by using a modern Adobe application to generate the PDF.
Method 1: From Freehand, Print to a Postscript file. Use Acrobat Pro/Distiller to distill the file into a PDF. This will keep the exact positioning of text as set in Freehand, but the text is no longer in contiguous blocks and easily editable.
Method 2: Open the FH file in Illustrator CS4 or later. Adjust the size of the text boxes. Save as PDF. There will be some line spacing changes and text reflow with this method.
PDF export directly from FreeHand has many limitations. This technote may help you understand them.

  • Is it possible to change the format of an image so that it mimicks MS Word's 'square' option.

Is there any way to make images, format-wise, the equivalent to MS Word's 'Square' in text wrapping, in order that i can write more that just 1 line of text along-side it?
At the moment the text is restricted to one line along-side the lower right-hand corner of the image.

  • Recovering texts from March 2013

I am looking to recover texts from my old iphone from Feb-March of 2013.  I have been searching the boards a couple of days and have found helpful tips on how to do it, however what I'm looking for is not coming up so I guess I am curious if they are even on my phone.
I have restored and done backups on my school computer and the furthest back it will pull info from leaves messages from Dec 2013 on my phone.
My computer back at home says I have one back up in itunes from 1/2014, however I know I deleted many pics/messages/other data from then to make room for music.  I hardly ever connected my phone to my computer at home since I had an ipod I used for music when running.  I did use the cloud for music but again, was never connected to my computer, just used the apple account.  I also no longer have an iphone (got a diff phone in January) I just have all my music on my old one.
I have logged into the "My cloud" website and when the menu options (contacts, calendar) come up, there is not a square for text messages.  There is one for mail however.
I guess my question is, if I have deleted the texts I am looking for before I ever backed it up to the computer, would I be able to recover them with an itunes back up?
I will be home tonight so if anybody knows who I could go about doing this I would appreciate it!
Sorry if this is confusing, computer knowledge is not my greatest strength.

Thank you.  As I said, I am not quite sure what I am doing so any help is great.   Do you know if any third-party apps will recover these at all?   Sorry it seems like a dumb question, just asking what my friends are suggesting I try.   Thanks again.

  • Can we put margin for text inside available Tile Templates ?

    Hi all ,
We are developing a windows phone silverlight 8.1 application. Using WNS as push notification service. For tile notification using the template "TileWide310x150PeekImage02" for wide tile . Text attribute with id 2 is
appearing a little bit left as compared to text with id 1 .We need all texts inside tile should be on the same vertical line . Here is the Tile images for both square and wide tile . Also is there any way to change the square tile text to small size?
Please tell me how to resolve it
    Thank you

Here is a complete list of the tile templates:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh761491.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
You could choose a different template to get larger text.  In your case you would use TextID 2,3,4,5 and eliminate Text ID 1 to get the text to align left correctly.  The TextID 1 is indented just a bit.

  • Custom Views: Set style of text in custom HTML tags

hi all, I'm using an extended JEditorPane to render HTML containing custom tags e.g. <mytag>Text</mytag>
My ViewFactory dynamically loads a class based on the name of the tag to return the View for that tag. (The idea being you can add any tag, by just providing a View class to render it). It's working to the extent that I can use the View.paint() method to paint a square of text before and after the content element.
What I need to do is set the style (attributes) of the text contained in the custom tags. Is this possible?
A call to doc.setCharacterAttributes(startoffset, endoffset, attrs, true); from the View results in a "Attempt to mutate in notification", possibly because the HTMLDocument is locked at this time.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'll rephrase. Is it possible to change the HTMLDocument from a View object. Forgive my lack of understanding.

  • IMac won't boot, cursor has strange block of 'text'

My iMac crashed during simple timeline editing in Final Cut Pro X. Upon reboot, it would get stuck at the grey apple logo screen. It would boot in safe mode, but the cursor has a mysterious square of 'text' following it around. All hardware tests indicate no problems.
A friend who has worked on Macs for years suggested that it was a fried graphics card and that the whole logic board needed to be replaced. I ordered a logic board that claimed to be fully tested, replaced it myself, and reassembled the machine. To my shock and amazement the same exact problem presented itself: won't boot past the apple logo, and a square of 'text' is following the cursor around.
I also reinstalled OSX 10.8.3 to no avail.
Any suggestions for diagnostics or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated. I'm nearing my wits' end.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac G5: Is my hard drive failing?

I have an iMac G5 that I've had for less than a year (shipped April 16 2005). It's a 1.8 Ghz PowerPC G5, with 1GB DDR SDRAM, and 250 GB hard drive. The machine model is PowerMac8.1. I'm running OS 10.4.6.
I've been having reliability issues starting 5 months after I got the machine. I'm quite dismayed with this; I've been using Macs for years and have been happy to pay the high Apple prices for the ease of use and reliability of the machines. Every other Mac I've had, I've used for at least 3 years (that includes two that were used when I got them), then gave to someone else who got several more years use after I upgraded. I've heard that the iMac G5s have overheating problems and a high failure rate, and am concerned that I've gotten one of the lemon machines. I've got to say that I'm really missing my iMac G4.
Here's a history of my ongoing iMac G5 woes:
Fan runs loudly (pretty much since I first got the machine).
October 2005: Kernal panic -> Apple replaced logic board. The repair techs also overtightened and stripped the screws holding the back of the chassis on.
February 2006: Machine begins to sporadically make a rhythmic noise (this sounds like "tongky tongky tongky". The noise sounds like something internal and mechanical (i.e., not a weird speaker noise output), and comes from the left side of the machine (where the hard drive is). When the noise happens, it becomes impossible to click on any OS X functionality, including the desktop, shutdown or restart. However, the screen is not frozen; I can move the cursor, but get the spinning icon. Restarting the computer using the power button rescues this behavior.
3/20/06: Boot from Tiger update disk, run Disk Utility Program. Did "repair disk"-> "Volume Header" needed minor repair. Did "repair disk permissions".
3/21/06: do chat with techs (2 sessions). Tech suggests pressing the SMU button inside (which I'm not altogether comfortable with, as the machine is heavy for me), and also suggests booting from the Apple Hardware Test disk and running the hardware test. This proves to be impossible; after booting while holding down either the "C" or "option" key (I tried both), the cursor would be unresponsive (stuck in the upper left corner of the screen). I'm using a non-Apple trackball instead of a mouse (but could run the HTD last fall when I had the logic board failure using the exact same trackball).
3/22/06: spoke with AppleCare tech. He also suggests pressing the SMU key. This time I try it, only to find that the screws had been stripped when the logic board was replaced in October, and that I can't remove the back the chassis. He then suggests that I run the Tech Tools disc that came with AppleCare. I do so; it takes about 6 hours. The report resulting says that everything passed. However, when I restart the machine, I get a grey screen with a black square with text saying that I must restart the machine (this is the same screen I got when I had the repeated kernal panics in October). I was able to boot from the Tech Tools disc, and ran it again. THis time it ran much faster, however, I still couldn't restart the machine. I also couldn't eject the Tech Tools disc. I made another call to AppleCare the next day. The tech who answered said it definitely sounded like a hardware problem, and suggested that I take it in for repair.
3/25/06: I take the machine in to the Apple Store at the Cambridgeside Galleria. The Genius is able to start the machine from an external drive, but can't access my hard drive. I leave the machine for repair, and retrieve it on April 3.
4/03/06: The repair techs wipe the hard drive, reinstall the operating system, and replace the chassis. They say they can't reproduce the problem. I bring the machine home, and restore some of my files from my external backup drive. Within 4 hours, the rhythmic "tongky tongky" noise and accompanying crash recur. I restart and get another crash with 20 minutes.
4/04/06: I call AppleCare; the tech refers me to someone higher up. She has me boot from the Hardware Test Disk. I again have the frozen cursor problem. She talks me through running it using keyboard commands. Two hours later, my computer passes all the tests. She say there must be a problem with how I have my preferences set, and suggests creating a new user (which I haven't yet figured out how to do), and to keep track of when the machine crashes again, and what programs I'm running.
4/10/06, 10:15 PM: Machine starts making a different noise (again from the left side). This time it's a slower ticking, more a clicking noise. I have open: Safari, Firefox, Mail and Preview (I will note that I had not downloaded and installed Firefox before the earlier crashes); I'm also connected to the external drive via FireWire. I restart the machine successfully.
At this point I'm noticing some other odd behaviors:
I have to force-quit Mail (i.e., quitting from the pull-down menu doesn't work, nor does quitting from the dock)
    • The machine goes to sleep after a few minutes of being idle (I have the "start screen saver" time set for one hour)
    • The screen saver does not come one when the machine puts itself to sleep; it goes straight to the black screen
    • The machine wakes up slowly, and programs open slowly, and sometimes respond slowly (I have a gig of RAM).
    • Image icons show only the application icon, not a thumbnail of the image (I saw thumbnails before the most recent repair).
4/13/0, 3:46 PM: Sudden start of "tongky tongky" noise. I have open Safari, Firefox, Mail, Preview and Quicktime (the latter two have no documents open). Again, I can't shut down from the menu, and have to use the power button.
3:54 PM: "tongky tongky" noise recurs, this time interspersed with a "whirr-click" noise. I discover that I actually can shut down the machine from the menu bar; it turns out that the response is very slow...it takes minutes to respond to a command.
5:00PM: "tongky tongky" noise recurs. I'm running Safari, FireFox and Mail. I don't do anything, and it resolves for a while.
5:30 PM: No weird noises, but nothing but the cursor works. I can't click between different open windows. I power down using the power button at 5:33.
11:30 PM: Machine makes ticking and whirring sounds (again from the left side). The machine's response is very slow when this is happening. I'm running FireFox and Safari.
I'm now noticing a few more weirdnesses: RealPlayer flies now have a blank white rectangle icon, rather than a RealPlayer icon. Also, I can no longer play music samples on Amazon (neither RealPlayer nor Windows Media Player). I know these are both minor issues, but it's still yet another functionality that my machine has lost since early March.
I strongly suspect that my hard drive is failing. Do my problems sound like they might be due to something else? However, I can't seem to get the AppleCare or Apple Geniuses to acknowledge that I have a hardware problem. Am I likely to have a better service experience if I take my machine to an Apple-authorized dealer other than the Apple store?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for the answer. I've been backing up my data all along. The Apple Care phone support people have been insisting that it must be a software problem because of the extended hardware test showing no errors. When I took my machine to the Apple Care store, they only wiped the hard drive, reinstalled the OS, and replaced the chassis that had been damaged in an earlier Apple Store service visit.
I forgot to mention that I've also replaced one of the RAM cards (which failed the EHT in October, when the logic board also failed), so I'm now on my third problem. I've done a bit more examination of the machine, and I'm fairly sure I've got a Rev A iMac. The serial number falls within the range of the ones that had problems, though mine aren't the ones described on the info page.
I've been trying the Apple Care suggested solution of creating a new user (the last Apple Care person I spoke to insisted that the problem was created by some bad preferences). I haven't yet had another experience of the "tongky" noise followed by the response slowing to a crawl, but I do hear an ominous single click several times a day. Response times continue to be sluggish (again, I have a GB of memory), and the machine continues to go to sleep after about 5-10 minutes of being idle (I'm currently set for one hour), with the screen saver never coming on.
I guess my bottom line question is what exactly do I say to Apple Care to convince them that I've got a hardware problem and get them to replace the hard drive?
