SRP541w DNS Proxy issue

I'm running FW 1.02.01 (23) and I'm having problems with the DNS proxy.  I have DNS Proxy enabled for my DHCP server on the router and I have my dns server programmed into the global dns location.  I cannot ping any DNS names for my IPSEC VPN tunnel.
Thanks,
Adam De Lay

Hi Adam,
Could I first recommend that you upgrade to version 1.2.4.  This is available for free download, just go to www.cisco.com/go/srp500 and look for the link on the right.
If you are still seeing the issue after upgrade, could you please grab the device status file (Administration > Remote Support) and send to me please. [Don't post it here]

Andy

  • DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

    hi all .... looking for some suggestions
    I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
    I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
    Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
    Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

    Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
    This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
    TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
    When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
    Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
    Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
    The dead proxy is very clear:
    $ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
    ** server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.149.160.49
    I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
    Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

  • Best way to replace DNS Proxy

    I've always run BorderManager's DNS Proxy for our internal DNS server. It works great due to it checking the hosts file first before forwarding the DNS request to the Internet. So, I'd put all of the servers and their internal IP address in the hosts file and point all the workstations at the BorderManager server for DNS.
    Now, I need to replace that same functionality with something else. Preferably something that will run on SLES 11 or OES2.
    I'm not experienced with BIND or any other DNS server. Do other products reference the local hosts file first or was that something unique to BorderManager?
    All suggestions greatly appreciated!

  • E3000 - no dns proxy feature?

    I just purchased a E3000 and it appears that there is no DNS proxy feature with this router.   Is that true?  If so, any suggestions on how to use static IP addressing without having use static DNS as well.   I've always set my router as DHCP and then point all my computers to resolve DNS through the router.  This works great and I can't believe the E3000 doesn't support it?

    The issue is that since I can't use the e3000 as a DNS proxy I have to enter my ISP's DNS explicitly on all my computers.  I don't like to do this since my ISP can change/has changed DNS in the past and it requires me to touch all my computers.  I run lots of VM's (40 or so) and it requires me to change each one individually.   If I can point DNS @ the router then when the ISP makes any changes it is automatically picked up by the computers. I also perform some other voodoo with the VMware network settings which allows my VM's to move from office network to outside network with minimum config changes and this relies on the existance of the DNS Proxy feature.
    I know that I can use DHCP on the endpoints but for several reasons this is not an option in my environment.  I need to use static ip for my computers.
    This is enough of a hassle that I might need to return the router.   Any recommendations of a gig wireless N router that has DNS proxy functionality?

  • Full NAT dns proxy is not working in Windows 7

    Back in XP, I can activate the Windows full blown NAT service via RemoteAccess and IpNat (I turned off SharedAccess as it's not compatible with RemoteAccess) and use netsh to configure it. I activated the dns proxy via 'netsh routing ip dnsproxy' context.
    It works very well all these years.
    Now using Windows 7, I can't make it work anymore. I have copied over both ipmontr.dll & ippromon.dll from Windows 2K8 R2, and install those helper to my Windows 7 netsh. I can access 'netsh routing ip dnsproxy' context. But enabling the the DNS proxy
    doesn't do anything. DNS Request (UDP port 53) coming form the client in the private LAN served by this PC just sinked in, no response. I don't see any DNS request attempt on the public network interface of this PC.
    From 'netstat -na', I don't see UDP port 53 on private network interface is opened. In XP, I can see it's opened and closed as I enable or disable the DNS proxy on 'netsh routing ip dnsproxy' context. I enable the firewall log to see if the firewall block
    it, but I see absolutely nothing related to the DNS request.
    Is there a missing step to enable a full blown NAT service in Windows 7 that I missed? Pls help.
    Thx

    Thank you all for replies, but ICS is NOT an option. It can only handle 1 private network and limited to 192.168.0.0/24. In our test framework we need 2 private network and use 172.20.0.0/14. Using Windows Server is way too expensive, we have so many test
    benches that each having their private network the above for test isolation. We only need NAT functionality, not the whole Windows Server functionality.
    I also found out, despite netsh manage to configure the NAT, but actually no NATing is taken any place. Not only the DNS proxy, but the whole NAT just not happening.
    IMHO, removing it from Win7 is a mistake, not every one need the whole server functionality. We have decided to use linux instead. So we cancel the plan to upgrade to Win7 and go linux. Microsoft could have got some license fee from the Win7 we plan to puchase,
    but this is a deal killer for us as NAT is the core of our test framework based on. Not ideal for us as we have many win native based tools, but since we are already moving to python, I guess moving to linux is the answer for us.
    Had Win7 still has the full NAT capability as in WinXP, I do prefer to stay on windows, but we have to move on as WinXP is no longer supported.
    I consider this thread is close. Thank you all.

  • Web Service authentication and PROXY Issue

    HI All,
    Recently I developed an application in Flex 2 which uses
    webservices to access remote data.One more point to be noted, that
    these webservices are secured( i.e they need username and password
    to access)
    I got a production server ( say
    myProduction server) and all my webservices are deployed on
    it. We have a SAP portal running on this server. I have created a
    PAR file of my applications .SWF file and hosted it on the portal.
    When I run my application from myProduction, it runs fine, no
    issues with it.
    Now, I have a proxy server ( say
    myProxy server), which is used to make my application
    available on the internet.
    This proxy redirects all the requests to myProduction server.
    When I try to run my application from myProxy Server, I am
    getting the following error:
    [RPC Fault faultString="Security error accessing url"
    faultCode=
    Channel.Security.Error"
    faultDetail="Unable to load WSDL". If currently online,

    Do I need any configuration files to be maintained? How do I
    resolve this proxy issue??
    myProxy server is not able to load the WSDL from
    myProduction.I am not usinfgFlex Data Services. I am directly
    accessing the services.
    If anyone knows about this issue please help me. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated.
    This issues has been unresolved since 15 days now.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    I am not sure if what I am suggesting may be the source for
    the problem, but it could be that you will need a
    crossdomain.xml file deployed on your production server, so
    that it can accept the requests from the Portal. Also, I guess you
    will be using a
    flex-config.xml or
    services-config.xml. Just make sure that all server paths
    have been properly mapped to the values entered in the destination
    attributes of the WebService tags.
    I hope that helps.

  • Need help with load balancing and DNS proxy

    Hi,
    I need help on how to configure my router so it will work with my DNS proxy and load balancing.
    I have a Linksys LRT224 router. I have two broadband connections from two separate ISPs,500Mbps each (WAN1 & WAN2). WAN1 has a static IP and WAN2 is dynamic assigned. I use Unlocator (www.unlocator.com) so I can access geographically restricted sites (Pandora, Netflix, etc.).
    The problem I have is that unlocator registers only one IP address (WAN1 address) and since I am doing load balancing I have no way of knowing if the DNS request will go through the registered IP (WAN1) or through the other (WAN2). I am not an expert in routing or networking but I'm guessing I have a way of configuring the router so all the DNS requests go out through WAN1, right?
    In the router's Dual WAN config page there is a section for Protocol Binding. I tried to configure but only managed to screw up the internet at home. I used:
    DNS[UDP/53-53]->192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254(0.0.0.0-0.0.0.0)WAN2
    Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
    Alex

    Good solution though. That's probably the only way you could do true Load Balancing anyway.

  • LRT214 DNS Proxy stops working

    Hi,
    I have been using the LRT214 for a few months now. I have a few hostnames in the 'Internal DNS list' for internal devices. So I set DHCP to use 'DNS Proxy' and then set the LRT214 to use google dns.
    It works well most of the time - clients can resolve internal dns that I configure on the LRT and they are proxied to google dns for everything else.
    However about once a month the DNS proxy/server on the LRT stops working and doesn't resolve anything anymore.  The only way to get it back is to reboot the LRT and it then starts working immediately.
    This is very frustrating for my users and I am considering replacing the device.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Rob

    What firmware version are you running?
    An option would be to run a DNS Server on your LAN.

  • IWork '09 startup hang...proxy issue?

    iWork hangs at startup anytime that I launch the applications when I'm behind a firewall. I can reproduce this problem very easily by successfully starting up the application on home home network and encountering problems anytime I launch the applications under a VPN connection or at the office.
    Is iWork trying to check in with iwork.com at launch? If so, is there any way to disable this behavior or transparently handle the proxy issue without my having to edit preferences every time I switch network settings?
    Thanks for reading this!
    -Jamie

    I was able to eliminate the iWork '09 startup hang by properly configuring my global HTTP proxy. I ran "netstat -an" from the console during the hang and found that iWork was attempting to connect to one of the iWork.com servers at startup.
    Here's what I saw:
    hostname:~ username$ netstat -an
    Active Internet connections (including servers)
    Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state)
    tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.194.52595 17.250.248.128.80 SYN_SENT

  • Openbox and proxy issues[Solved]

    I am using openbox as my wm. I am facing a proxy issue.
    I have added two functions in my .bashrc (based on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Proxy_settings):
    function proxyon(){
    echo -n "username:"
    read -e username
    echo -n "password:"
    read -es password
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    echo -e "\nProxy environment variable set."
    function proxyoff(){
    unset HTTP_PROXY
    unset http_proxy
    unset FTP_PROXY
    unset ftp_proxy
    echo -e "\nProxy environment variable removed."
    but after login when i run the command 'proxyon' and then launch firefox from openbox menu, firefox doesn't pick up the env variables but if I launch firefox from the same shell where i run 'proxyon' command firefox picks up the variables perfectly.
    I have tried adding:
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    to .bashrc directly still launching firefox from openbox menu doesn't pickup proxy settings.
    Also I want to know how do I add proxy exception for a perticular url.
    Last edited by jaideep_jdof (2011-01-31 11:00:05)

    Try adding them to .bash_profile. I think .bashrc is only read when launching a shell.
    Edit .bash_profile, then log out and log back in to test it.
    If nothing else works, you can write your own wrapper script for Firefox and launch it via the script in Openbox, e.g.
    #!/bin/bash
    export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    export ftp_proxy="http://$username:$password@proxyserver:8080/"
    firefox "$@"
    It might not be the most elegant solution, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

    I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
    Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
    I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
    Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
    Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
    Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
    I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
    I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
    Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
    Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
    Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
    Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

    I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
    You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
    Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
    In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
    There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
    BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • Send a request using Http(s)URLConnection through proxy issue

    Hi all,
    Here are system environment,
    OS: Ubuntu 12.04
    Java version: 1.6.0_27
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.12.4) (6b27-1.12.4-1ubuntu1)
    OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)
    There are 3 roles introduction as below:
    1. A https client: It can not direct connect to https server. Because it is restricted in a enclosed network environment just like intranet(ip is 10.100.11.8).The only way out is proxy server.
    2. A proxy server: Locate between https client and https server. It have two network interfaces(ip are 10.100.11.10 and 192.168.11.10)
    3. A https server: It is on extranet(ip is 192.168.11.123) and it also cannot connect to https client directly.
    The other network environment setup is: There is no DNS server on https client network environment.
    The following is part of https client code section:
            public static void main(String args[]){
               String proxyIp ="10.100.11.10";// proxy server IP
               testConn(proxyIp);
            private static void testConn(String proxyIp){
                    String httpsURL="https://192.168.11.123:8443/httpsServices";
                    setSSLContext();// I thought this is not root cause so I do not post on
                    try{
                      InetAddress intIPAdd= InetAddress.getByAddress(convStrToByte(proxyIp));
                      InetSocketAddress proxyInetAddr = new InetSocketAddress(intIPAdd,80);
                      Proxy proxy = new Proxy(Proxy.Type.HTTP, proxyInetAddr);
                      URL httpsUrl = new URL(httpsURL);
                      HttpsURLConnection httpsCon = (HttpsURLConnection) httpsUrl.openConnection(proxy);
                      httpsCon.setDoOutput(true);
                      httpsCon.setDoInput(true);
                      httpsCon.setRequestMethod("POST");
                      httpsCon.setDefaultUseCaches(true);
                      httpsCon.setUseCaches(true);
                      System.out.println("Get OutPutStream start!");
                      OutputStream out = httpsCon.getOutputStream(); // or httpsCon.connect();
                      System.out.println("Get OutPutStream done!");
                      OutputStreamWriter owriter = new OutputStreamWriter(out);
                      owriter.write("<request>test</request>");
                      owriter.flush();
                      owriter.close();
            private static byte[]  convStrToByte(String ip){
            String str[] = ip.split("\\.");
            byte[] ipAry = new byte[str.length];
              for(int i=0;i<str.length;i++){
                ipAry[i] = (byte) Integer.parseInt(str, 10);
    return ipAry;
    All right, my problem is, while print out "Get OutPutStream start" untill "Get OutPutStream done", it always takes about 5 secs.
    No Error or exception. It was just hanging there approx 5 secs.
    I observed the packets flow with wireshark.
    Found out that hang time is to send a multicast to ask MDNS the proxy IP. No one reply this message. It would ask 3 times and then send request to proxy.
    About https trust and authentication issue. I use *All Trust* solution. because https server use self-signed CA by myself.
    If need, I would update this post with code section of setSSLContext() part.
    I wondering to know that I create proxy object using *InetSocketAddress(InetAddress addr, int port)*, or I create proxy ip instance using *public static InetAddress getByAddress(byte[] addr)* why it would ask to MDNS for proxy ip?
    On normal concept, I give an ip address and it do not need to resolve this ip for domain name.
    Check InetAddress getByAddress(byte[] addr) of JAVA SE6 API:
    It says: 'This method doesn't block, i.e. no reverse name service lookup is performed.'
    What can I do to let https client don't need to ask MDNS?

    Java does reverse DNS lookups for security reasons. Not sure you can disable it but if you can it will be described on the Networking Properties page.

  • WEB Proxy issue after Mountain Lion Update

    I had MAC OS X 10.6.8 on  my Mac mini before I updated it with MAC OS X 10.8. To connect to Internet we have some proxy setting in our company for which secure web proxy server is mentioned for web proxy and secure web proxy options in advanced setting of network preferences. Now after update I can only access safari web browser. For other browsers like Chrome and Firefox popup asking for authentication keep on popping up even after entering correct details. It's become quite irritating not to be able to surf on chrome. Please tell me how to solve it.

    Hi no real idea on this, but many Network connectivity issues have been solved by this...
    Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
    System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
    System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
    The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
    For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.
