  • Win2k8 Remote Control Not Working With SRSS 4.2 + SRWC 2.2

    Hi there.
I have an install of Windows Server 2008 (32bit) with SRSS 4.2 & SRWC 2.2 setup. I was previously on SRSS 4.1 & SRWC 2.1 and having the same issue I am having now, which to me tells me this problem is unresolved or i'm being a total muppet. (hopefully not the last one)
Windows Terminal Server environments has this awesome remote control feature where you can login to an RDP session which is already active and take control of the session while the end user is still logged in.With Server 2003 this works perfectly fine- it's brilliant. WIth 2008 it is a nightmare. It works for a split second and then closes off. The end users session also gets locked out (not logged out) and they have to put their windows credentials in to carry on working again.
Now... I can remote control users who are logging in via Remote Desktop on Windows XP/Vista etc.. but I can't with the Sun Ray Sessions. Does the SRWC 2.2 fully compatible with RDP 6.1 or is there any information anyone can give me to point me in the right direction of resolving this issue, like I said.. Win 2k3- Works like a dream....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    - Joe.

I just realised I hadn't posted the logs from SRSS Server with the issues. I have just tried on another WIN2K8 Server which wasn't configured by myself or my company and the same symptoms occurred. See logs below:

  • Srss 4.2 + srwc 2.2  Flash issue

I have installed the new SRSS 4.2 and SRWC 2.2 (EA1). The server is running Solaris 5/09 (u7) on a x86 server with 8 GB server. (physical box)
I have installed the MMR plugin on the windows XP SP 3 machine which as IE 8 with FLASH 10AX.
I have tried both a physical and a virtual XP machines as well as physical and virtual SRSS servers. This doesn't not seem to have any impact.
I am trying to play this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz902h6XxR0 which ive seen play smoothly on a sunray demo, but i cannot reproduce it. This video seems to play fine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf4PjtBqCcQ&feature=popular
Video seems to be smoothest when the FLASH redirection is disabled (uttsc -F off) at which point it is just run through the RDP protocol... Isnt this the opposite of what is supposed to happen?
The audio does stay synced and is smooth, however the FLASH video does NOT appear to have improved at all. Is there something im missing?
I will be happy to provide more information on my environment.
    thanks

I don't see any significant issues with the first video (the second one has been removed from YouTube since). What DTU are you using (it works fine with the Sun Ray 2 and 2FS here). How bad is it exactly? Do you see the blue interception icon in the tray while playing (if you move the mouse over it, does the tooltip mention SunFlash)? Do you have enough network bandwidth between the Sun Ray server and the DTU (and the Sun Ray server and the Windows server)? About 6.5 Mbit/s is needed at least for a YouTube video. Is the firmware of the DTU updated to the firmware of the Sun Ray EA release you are testing?

  • SRSS 4.2 + SRWC 2.2 with TS 2008

    Hi
I'm new to SunRays and SRSS. I have managed to install SRSS 4.2 and SRWC 2.2 on Solaris 10 x86 ok. I can get a Solaris desktop ok and a Windows desktop from a 2003 TS Server, but I can't get a Windows desktop working from a TS 2008 server using SUNWuttscwrap from either a SunRay 270 or the softclient.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a SunRay for use in a POC (Proof of Concept) so some of the things I tried when connecting to a Windows 2008 SP2 TS server were.
Logging on to a Solaris desktop opening a terminal session and running /opt/SUNWuttsc/bin/uttsc <ts server name>. This immediately returns to the command prompt.
Logging on to a Solaris desktop opening a terminal session and running /opt/SUNWuttscwrap/bin/uttscwrap <ts server name>. Entered the TS server details and user credentials and clicked ok. This immediately returns to the command prompt.
As soon as SP2 was uninstalled from the TS server I was immediately presented with a desktop from the TS server and able to logon using a domain user's credentials.
The Windows 2008 SP2 TS server was built from a VMware template used for our production Windows 2008 SP1 TS farm running on VMware vSphere. SP2 was then applied along with any available Windows updates.

  • USB Printer queue gets stuck - SRSS 4.2, SRWC 2.2, SRVC 1.1, VMware View 4

    Hi,
My environment is VMware vSphere 4 with a few ESX 4 servers. On that, I have a vCenter, a View 4 server and SRSS. Then I have a number of Windows XP desktops.
When the user logs into his/her desktop via the Sun Ray, everything works including the local USB printer (an HP laserjet). But...you can only print once...then the print queue stays at "Printing" and won't go away. Any further print jobs just get queued up. It also won't let you delete the print job from the queue. The first print job actually does come out on the printer, but doesn't disappear from the XP's print queue.
    Any ideas?
    Jim

I can duplicate the "white screen of death" with Early Access to vmware view, with Rays running from Solaris/x86. This is in fact not vmware-specific, as I can hang uttsc to an ordinary XP system. To duplicate fairly reliably, I run a Flash example and then "start -> logoff". uttsc doesn't terminate, and truss shows repeated
    /1: pollsys(0x08046690, 2, 0x08046728, 0x00000000) = 0
    /1: ioctl(10, AUDIO_GETINFO, 0x08046620) =0
This doesn't happen if the IE window is terminated before logout. The behavior appears to be independent of "-F off" in uttsc (but I'm using the Ray audio driver).
Is there a workaround (other than downgrading) in the vmware view scenario?

  • Delayed autio start/sart stop w/ SRSS 4.2 + SRWC 2.2 + Flash MMR + Sound

I've installed the most recent version of everything and made sure that the dtu's firmware was upgraded. I also installed the MMR which has the flash accel into my XP VM.
For the most part it all works as expected. Here are my observations:
When I start IE and go to youtube, the browser will occasionally crash. Generally browsing the web will result in random ie crashes. Before the MMR install I had no issues.
When playing flash videos, the audio start and stop will lag by a second or two. The audio is actually synced (i specified the sun audio rdp driver rather than the MS audio rdp driver). The little flash icon in the status bar shows that both video and audio are enabled.
So anybody else see the delayed audio start and stop?

I wonder if this is a bandwidth issue. You need about 6.5 MBit/s between the Sun Ray server and the DTU to effectively play a flash video from YouTube.

  • SRSS 4.2 + SRWC 2.2 (EA2) + Win 2008 = no audio

Using the latest Sunray5 ea2 bits, we are unable to get audio to work when connecting to a Win2k8 terminal server. We have no problems getting audio when connecting to a 2003 TS. Our wyse or windows clients have no issues getting audio from the same Win2k8 server.
This is not currently documented in the 2.2 connector release notes as a known issue.
    Anybody have any ideas?

Our setup is W2k8 R2 64bit (it may be the R2 that is throwing it for a loop). The media player is flash, wmp, etc.
Windows reports that the audio device is 'remote audio'
We have no issues with 2k3 or native solaris, just 2k8R2 (I dont have a non 'R2' box to test on)
I've verified via tsconfig.msc that all of the redirections are enabled and that I'm connecting in via RDP 6.1

Meta Kiosk would certainly do what you need and the USB pass through works.
    http://blogs.sun.com/danielc/entry/meta_kiosk_how_to_run
I think the problem you are running into is that you are using uttsc inside a Solaris environment as an app, looks like CDE, which isn't being supported to my knowledge to avoid conflicts between the two desktops. It is designed to work out of the box with SRWC kiosk mode.
The undocumented way to turn it on is to turn usb on by adding -r USB:on as an argument.

  • Full Screen RDP

I am just starting to play with Sun Ray and so far so good apart from a few minor hiccups.
Setup: Sun Ray 270; Solaris 10/09; SRSS 5.2; SRWC 2.2
RDP from the java desktop is working fine at the default 640x480 as well as all resolutions stipulated by the uttsc -g command, however, using the uttsc -m (fullscreen) fails.
I run it from a terminal window and it just hangs doing nothing. I have to open another terminal and kill the PID to stop it.
I've tried this to a number of different windows machines/OSs with the same result.
Resetting the SR270 to kiosk mode and going direct to those same machines works perfectly.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Klaus.

Installed uttscwrap and the issue has been resolved, and I can't replicate it.

  • Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 2008 R2 RDS

    Hello folks,
Using SRSS 4.2 / SRWC 2.2 with Sun Ray Connector Windows Components software installed on the clients.
Our test show amazing screen speed, and full 32 bit colour depth, great flash speed on Windows 2008 R2 RDS but no audio.
Our test using Windows 7 Enterprise displayed fast graphic speed, Windows Aero disabled, no audio and cannot be changed thus the user experience is not pleasant.
Anyone know when this will be addressed as it is crucial for any new deployments and upcoming desktop refreshes.
    Thanks!

After talking with Sun Support, this is a known bug that is slated to get fixed in the next SRWC patch. No timeline was available for the patch.

  • Signature Pad

I was assigned the task of testing a couple of signature pads Topaz siglite T-L460 with SUNRAY 270, Solaris 10 x86, SRSS 4.2 SRWC 2.3 in kiosk mode pointing to a windows 2003 terminal server.
However, after installing the windows components 2.0 with the usb redirector, it presents the pad to all the terminal server users. Does it's necessary to use the redirector? How do I isolate the device for the active user?
    Thanks .
    Estrar

    Hi estrar,
    - if this device is HID able, you don't need USB redirection et all. I use this approach for a barcode scanner or Wireless Keyboard like the Logitech MX5000, it just works.
    - on the other hand, I have the same issue then you when e.g attaching a USB disk to the terminal server. So we decided not to do USB redirection for WTS, but only for phyiscal or VDI XP or 7 Workstations.
    hope this helps, thomas

  • Windows terminal server 2003 cluster

We have a FOG with three Solaris 10 x86 servers, SRSS 4.2, SRWC 2.3 with the latest SRSS 4.2 patches. All Sunrays have the latest firmware.
Kiosk settings points to a windows 2003 terminal server cluster. The two nodes in the windows cluster have latest SRWC 2.0.
The cluster entitles, two terminal servers and a session manager server, we use roaming profiles.
When pointing kiosk settings to the cluster FQDN the sunray sessions are routed to just one server in the windows cluster. But if we RDP to Cluster's FQDN from a regular desktop the windows cluster load balances properly.
I do need help understanding how SRSS handles sessions? specifically if nodes are behind a cluster with session manager. Could it be that the session manager it's incompatible with SRSS in kiosk mode since it tries to route sessions at the mean time SRSS is doing the same task?
    Thanks,
    RE
Edited by: estrar on Dec 5, 2010 5:43 PM

    Hi Estrar,
Short answer: 2003 Session Directory does not do load balancing.
Long answer (to the above and your other questions):
The Sun Ray Server doesn't do anything with regards to load balancing the windows sessions. To the Sun Ray Server, or more appropriately the windows connector, it's just making the connection you tell it to.
With regards to the windows client "working", am I correct in guessing that you ran subsequent instances of MS-RDC to "prove" that it worked?
Most likely what happened there is that the PC, thus MS-RDC, received different IP addresses back from DNS for the FQDN with each launch. This is basically round robin, not load balancing. But I'd have to understand how you've done the FQDN of the cluster in DNS.
The most common initial reaction is that the DNS server is setup incorrectly (I'll plead guilty that I've had the same reaction). It is true that some DNS servers can be configured will return the same IP on the first dns query. This is called a cyclic ordering and results in the IP address of the resolved name every client to be identical. For example, if a DNS server is set for cyclic ordering, every first request for the IP of server A for xyz.com will be the same on all clients. The second query from the same client should result in server B being resolved, if not, then you do have a DNS problem.. However, in the case of Sun Ray Server, the "second query from the same client" would be the second session coming up, since, as far as the DNS server is concerned, all the Sun Ray session are coming from the same client. Therefore, even with cyclic ordering, round robin should work even better in a Sun Ray environment then a "fat" client environment. You can check the documentation for specific DNS servers on how to set a random order for round robin (which should be the default), but chasing down cyclic ordering of RR entries as a cause to this "issue" is basically a red herring in a Sun Ray environment.
More than likely the same IP being returned everytime is a side effect of the name service caching daemon (nscd). The job of nscd is to speed up name resolution. However, ncsd will break any round robin scheme as it caches the first server returned by the first query from the caller (i.e. the host doing the name lookup, aka the Sun Ray server) and all applications on the caller will use that address for the lifetime of the cache. The default lifetime of the nscd cache is 3600 seconds (an hour). To disable the name service caching daemon, run the following command on every Sun Ray server in the host group (aka FOG): svcadm disable system/name-service-cache
An über smart colleague mentioned the possibility of another problem that could exist even if nscd is disabled and the hosts are on the same subnet as the caller . This has to do with default behavior of the Solaris resolver library putting servers that reside on the same subnet as the caller at the top of the sort order. You can read the notes in the man page for "gethostbyname" and also the man page for nss(4) for more information, but both reference how this behavior can break round robin. The fix is to edit /etc/default/nss and uncomment (or add) the statement SORT_ADDRS=FALSE
While those two things will allow a Solaris based Sun Ray server (or any Solaris client) to properly recognize round robin entries, it still holds true that 2003 Session Directory does not do load balancing. The only role of session directory is to ensure that you don't get routed to a different terminal server in case you have an existing session on another server. Round Robin + Session Directory may be all you need, but bear in mind that it is not "load balancing". Users could still connect directly to one of the IP addresses vs the round robin DNS name and that would defeat the round robin scheme in place.
Load balancing is a separate component in 2003, either using an external device like F5's BigIP or using Windows Network Load Balancing (NLB) service.
The type of load balancing solution that can be used depends on what is meant when you use the term "cluster". If the cluster is a real implementation of Windows 2003 Clustering (i.e.the type of cluster you'd use for SQL, Exchange, etc) then you can't use NLB and would have to use an external load balancer. Sun Ray Windows Connector supports either IP based or token based load balancers, though we don't certify any third party products in this regard.
"Cluster confusion" occurs because Session Directory itself is supported by Windows 2003 Clustering in order to provide a highly available directory service. Easy to see how this would be desirable with a large number of terminal servers. However, NLB does not work, nor is it supported on Windows 2003 Cluster.
To further the confusion, when NLB is enabled on the NIC that is handling RDP traffic, one of the configuration tabs is "Cluster Parameters". But it is important to realize that this has nothing to do with Windows 2003 Clustering and is in fact incompatible with it. NLB makes use of independent servers (i.e. not clustered), which the primary requirement of those servers is that they are on the same subnet.
Finally, it is easy to get confused between 2003 and 2008 session directory when it comes to load balancing, but they are very different. 2008 "session directory" does do load balancing. In fact, to underscore this distinction/feature, Microsoft has renamed Session Directory to TS Session Broker. (See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772418%28WS.10%29.aspx)
To summarize, with Windows 2003 you have two choices when it comes to load balancing and session directory.
    1) Have a HA implementation of Session Directory and use an external load balancer
    2) Have non-HA implementation of session directory and use NLB to do load balancing.
Good how to article on setting NLB on 2003 with terminal services here:

  • SRWC 2.0 descriptor file and SUNWuttsc-kio not present

    Dear Forum users,
I have installed Solaris 10 11/06 OS in my SFV240 server. Also have installed the following:
    1) Latest Solaris 10 patch bundle
    2) SRSS 4.0 update 2 BETA.
    3) SRWC 2.0_15
I read through the SRWC Installation and Admin guide under Kiosk Session. There it mentioned about uttsc.conf descriptor file and uttsc script. In another page it says that SunRay Connector Kiosk Session installed automatically as part of SR Connector installation "SUNWuttsc-kio". The page mentioned to configure the Kiosk mode in SR Admin GUI and select Session "Sun Ray Connector for Windows OS".
Non of the said above files are in my system. The following files are missing:
    1) The descriptor uttsc.conf in /etc/opt/SUNWkio/sessions/.
    2) The script uttsc in /etc/opt/SUNWkio/sessions/uttsc/.
    3) No SUNWuttsc-kio package in the system.
    4) From SR Admin GUI, Advanced tab, Kiosk Mode tab, i sis not see the Sun Ray Connector for Windows OS option.
Why the above files are missing ? Do i have to install any packages ?
Waiting for help and thanks in advance.

    Hi Alisampras,
I had the same problem. Look in the main Sunray installation folder after you unzipped it, i.e: srss_4.0/Supplemental/Kiosk_Mode_4.0
...and go from there. I'm using SLES9, and it was a simple 'rpm -ivh' for me. It looks like the Solaris install might take a bit more effort....
    Hope this helps...

  • SRWC 2.2_13 Option not supported by Protocol

    Hi,
First of all, I know what i'm trying to do is unsupported however my question remains.
I'm trying to run the EA1 bits on my Vostro Laptop running Solaris Express Build 107.
Installation of SRSS 4.2 EA1 runs just fine, aswell the installation of SRWC 2.2. However if i try to connect
to a windows environment i'm getting
SO_KEEPALIVE: Option not supported by protocol
SO_KEEPALIVE: Option not supported by protocol
    /opt/SUNWuttsc/bin/uttsc[104]: 7543 Segmentation Fault
Does anyone have some pointers where I could check to get srwc 2.2_13 running on Solaris Express?
    Regards,
    patrick

You can ignore the SO_KEEPALIVE messages. They're caused by a bug in the 'uttsc-bin' program (which is the real SRWC program, 'uttsc' is just a launcher) but they're harmless. You might see similar messages in other SRSS logfiles, you can ignore those too.
The segfault is the killer. There's probably nothing you can do about that yourself, but if you can capture a corefile from the failing process and send that to Sun then they should be able to figure out what's going wrong and either fix it or tell you how to work around it. To do that you'll first have to use 'coreadm' to enable corefile collection for set[ug]id processes. By default cores aren't generated for programs that run with elevated privilege. That'll go something like this:
    mkdir -p -m 0700 /var/core/uttsc-bin
    coreadm -g /var/core/%f/%p-%t
    coreadm -e global-setid
Then run 'uttsc' and after it reports the segfault look in /var/core/uttsc-bin for a core file whose name is <process-id>-<timestamp>. That's the core file you should send to Sun. To do that, send a message to the SRS5 EA feedback mail address or follow up in this thread and someone will give you an address to send it to. (Don't send the core file to the EA feedback address. It'd be rude to broadcast such a large file to all of the people who are monitoring that address.)

  • SRWC 2.2 Hotdesking not working

Hotdesking between Sun Ray DTUs gives me a black screen and the mouse pointer.
    My environment is as follows:
SRSS 4.2 in kiosk mode using uttsc
    SRWC 2.2
    Windows 2003 R2 Terminal Server
    Observations
Hotdesking to the same DTU works (so pulling and re-inserting the card continues the session)
Hotdesking between DTUs works when not using SRWC 2.2.
No errors seen in the /var/opt/SUNWut/log/messages file
Before the black screen comes up I see the session flash momentarily
Returning to the original DTU gives the black screen as well
Terminating the Sun Ray session allows me to reconnect to the Windows Terminal session from any DTU

I reverted to SRSS 4.1 and SRWC 2.1 and everything works no issue.
Has anyone gotten hotdesking in kiosk mode to Windows Termina Server working with multiple DTUs?
