Srw224g4 fiber link down

Support,
Yesterday for no apparent reason the fiber link between my SRW224G4 and  SLM248G went down. Luckily I have a backup SRW224 switch with a mini-GBIC. I tried both ports on the SRW224G4 switch. Neither would sync with the SLM248G switch. I moved the mini-GBIC to the SRW224 switch. This got the network back up.
Why did not SRW224G4 switch fail? I've looked through the logs and only see link down entries. Is there a way to test the switch to see why it failed? Do I need to relpace the switch? Is it still under warranty? What are my options??
Thanks,
Bill V

i've checked the datasheet for the device and the warranty period is 5 years. you already tried to use a different mini-gbic card for the device, right? i suggest that you try to swap the gbic card also to verify if that will work.

  • Five Story Building Fiber Link Speeds

I am designing a new model and am really grappling with the fiber uplink speeds.  I am trying to build a network resilent enough to support data for the next ten years.  I am trying to decide if I need a 10 gig fiber uplink to my data center on the third floor of the building from each of the adjacent floors.  I am planning on running a 48 port gigabit switch on each floor, and at the moment without VOIP.  But I'm trying to peer into my crystal ball for years down the road to see what my requirements will be.  Currently we are a 10/100 based LAN with all the normal windows domain things, file shares, exchange, internet, etc.  I could also concatenante some 1 gig fiber links, say 4 per floor, to get to almost half the bandwidth but with multiple fiber strands.
Either way I was just hoping for some feedback.  There are advantages to each, I'm just worried as my switches begin to max out the ports, and the computers and network start utilizing the gigabit bandwidth more that my uplinks will begin to be the bottleneck, not today or tomorow, but a few years down the road.  Am I crazy?  Any help would be greatly appreciated, or a link to a thread that has already addressed this issue.
    Thanks,

It’s not easy to comment on how your technology strategy for the next 10 years should be since I do not know anything about what the organization is doing or which applications we can expect on the network.
The easy answer will be to use the highest bandwidths and best switches you can get but this comes with a price that might give you a bad ROI the next 5 years. So what you can do is to look in to the future and predict if video, cloud computing, or any other high bandwidth applications will be present in this infrastructure. And the answer to that should be yes – sure… etc. But when is also a key question. So for your design you should plan ahead and see what you need now and if there is better to upgrade later. Do you then want to do a forklift upgrade and replace everything, or do you want to replace some components / interfaces to get higher bandwidth? You can address now that you have a technology strategy that points out the direction for the next 10 years, and you have a plan on how to build this new network now according to this strategy. You should address that i.e. after 5 years you need to do the next step and invest to upgrade the network according to the strategy to gain higher bandwidth, better SLA or any other upgrade that is critical for the business.
Even if you go for 10Gbps now it might not be what you need in the future. And even if you have a 10 year scope for your strategy you should occasionally do a sanity check and patch up your strategy to meet the requirements from the organization you are going to support, and to be aligned with the technology development.

  • 5500 Controller link down

I have a new 5500 controller and the fiber link shows down and I cannot get it to come up. Does anyone have any advice? I changed GBIC's fiber patch, ports etc and cannot get the link to come up. I did walk through the inital config as well.
    Thanks.

Are you getting error messages saying that the SFP modules you are using are fakes or non-Cisco supported?

  • Can't establish Fiber link between 7609 and 4006

Our Service Provider runs a 7609 and has Q in Q tunneling to provide us L2 vlan services over a MM Fiber link.
We have a 4006 on 12.2.25 (EWA9) with a 6 port Gig blade WS-X4306-GB and are trying to establish connectivity on the link, but the conenction remains in down/down state, regardless of the configuration changes we have tried (speed nonegoiate, flowcontrol send/receive on/off, switchport mode trunk/desirable/auto).
Oddly, the same Gbic and fiber feed, connected into a Cisco 3550 switch comes up with no problem.
Below are the configurations of the Service Providers 7609, as well as the configuration of the 3550 (which worked), and the configuration we tried on the 4006.
Please review and advise of any problem you see in the configurations.

  • Occasional problem with eth0 link down after booting

    Hi,
Every so often after booting up the PC there is not any working network connection. Looking through the output of dmesg, I find "eth0 link down" messages. Not knowing a lot about networking lead me to resort to rebooting to resolve the problem, and rebooting does indeed resolve the problem. Today I discovered the post at  [url http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117728] which suggests similar behaviour.
I played around with ifconfig and initially thought I was seeing the same behaviour, but believe I was mistaken. I can't actually confirm until it happens if my new found knowledge will actually resolve the problem without rebooting.
I'd like to try and track down the source of the problem, and either file a bug report or take some other (configuration) measure, but need help tracing it.
Hardware in question is: Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
and I'm using the testing repository in Arch. Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    James.

I have the exact same problem and I have the exact same ethernet controller/chip.
I've not looked that much why it was doing this. Maybe auto-negotiation fail for I don't know which reason, maybe something else, hard to tell. I might try to investigate this a bit more next time it does me this.
That said, what I'm doing when I'm seeing that my eth0 has no carrier, I'm doing a "ip link set eth0 down", wait a few seconds, and then a "ip link set eth0 up", and then it's usually fine. Since I'm personally using static IP addresses, I also have to re-add the default route after that, i.e. a "ip route add default via 192.168.1.1" to be able to go out of my LAN again. This will be different if you are using DHCP.

  • Solaris 8 says: "Link down, Cable Problem?"

I have these on my home LAN:
    1. Sun Ultra 5 Solaris 8
    2. Win 2000 PC
    3. Win NT laptop
They are all hooked into a LinkSys Router.
The Router is hooked into my Motorala Cable Modem.
    Here's the problem:
The PC and the laptop can see each other on the LAN.
The Solaris 8 is only visible on the Lan INTERMITTENTLY.
The lights on the Router for the PC and laptop are always ON.
When I reboot the Solaris box, the lights on the Router sometimes come ON, and sometimes they stay OFF. When they stay OFF, I see the message: "Link down, Cable Problem?" during reboot.
I have tried different cables, and tried various combinations of the 4 avalable ports on the back of my Router.
If I plug in the Sun box DIRECTLY into my cable modem, then I don't see the above message. (but then I don't have a LAN anymore)
Please help, I've been struggling with this for a while now.
    Thanks,
Irshad Ahmed (I am relatively new to Sun)

    Hi
You have not indicated if you have the router ethernet ports working
at 100Mbps or 10Mbps. Depending on this sometimes, Sun systems may
not be correctly auto-negotiating their ethernet port settings.
You may set these parameters to force Sun Ultra 5 to a 100Mbps mode or a 10Mbps mode.
For forcing it to 100Mbps, Full Duplex mode and disabling the auto-negotiation, put these entries in /etc/system:
    set hme:hme_adv_autoneg_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_100T4_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_100fdx_cap=1
    set hme:hme_adv_100hdx_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_10fdx_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_10hdx_cap=0
Conversely, if you want to force your Sun to work on 10Mbps, Full
duplex mode, (if your router does not support 100Mbps) in the same
/etc/system file, put the following entries :
    set hme:hme_adv_autoneg_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_100T4_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_100fdx_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_100hdx_cap=0
    set hme:hme_adv_10fdx_cap=1
    set hme:hme_adv_10hdx_cap=0
One of these should solve your problem. You need to reboot the system
    after putting these entries.
You can also check the port at the OK prompt using the command
"watch-net". This test the onboard ethernet interface.
You may also apply the hme patch released by Sun that fixes many
known problems with hme ethernet driver. The patch id is 108981-03.

  • Link down and Link Up Snmp trap C#

Hi i've configure my cisco router to receive the SNMP traps if the link goes up or down. However i found out that when i plugged out the cable i'm not receiving any link down on the network management system. Until i plugged in again the link will then show up or down state. May i know whats the reason why i can't receive the link down when i plugged out my cable?

If your router has only fa0/0 as active interface, then this would be the interface that the router would use to communicate with the network management system. However when you unplug that interface now the router has no interface that it can use to send the link down trap to the network management system.

  • Fibre Link Down

We have been using an Apple RAID with 8 disk (4 in each controller side) for almost 6 months, each controller in the raid is conected to a Qlogic 5600 and from there to 3 IBM servers using slicing and LUN mapping.
Suddenly since two weeks ago we have been receiving this logs AT IRREGULAR intervals:
Upper Controller 04/01/08 08:51:09 PM RAID Controller 1 Fibre Link Up
Warning Upper Controller 04/01/08 08:51:08 PM RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP
Warning Upper Controller 04/01/08 08:48:48 PM RAID Controller 1 Fibre Link Down
And the windows server report that the SCSI disk have been disconnected, when we stop all the servers and reboot the raidfabricsservers works for 2 to 5 days and again the same messages.
Any idea of what is happenning and how to handle this ?

+ the ports on the fibre switch should be configured right for storage/hosts:
RSCN suppression on / device scan off for hosts
    and vice versa for storage
+ the logs from the FC are hidden, you can access them following the next procedure. (As explained in the [qlogic event manual|http://www.servants.co.jp/qlogic/pdf/2-259060-00_A-QLogicFCSwitchEventMassageGuideFW40.pdf]
Archiving and Downloading the Event Log
You can use the command line interface to create a file on the switch that contains
the most recent 200 entries plus the previous 1000 entries. This file can then be
downloaded to the workstation using FTP. To create and download a log file, do
    the following:
    1. Log into the switch through Telnet and create an archive of the event log.
The Set Log Archive command creates a file on the switch named logfile.
    QLogic #> admin start
QLogic (admin) #> set log archive
    2. Open an FTP session on the switch and login with the account name images
and password images. Transfer the file logfile in binary mode with the Get
    command.
    ftp ip_address
    user:images
    password: images
    ftp>bin
    ftp>get logfile
xxxxx bytes sent in xx secs.

the led on the switch is on (it's green)
    maybe i need some patch
    how can i do?

    gio,
You didn't necesarily do anything wrong.
You do not necessarily have any broken equipment.
There may just be somthing that is incomplete in the setup.
Begin by checking if your network settings were set up correctly by running:
    <b># ifconfig -a</b>
(it's usually best to troubleshoot while you are root user)
If the output from the <i>ifconfig</i> command seem to be complete, you could always think about reconfiguring the NIC all over again.
If you are not sure, then just paste the entire output results back here.
Also, use the forum search function, using keyword <u>sys-unconfig</u>.
Next, read the Solaris man pages for sys-unconfig.
That command will force you to repeat the setup of the connection.

  • Howto Link Down-Cable problem?

    Hi,
I am having a Ultra Sparc 5 with a hme interface and a quad card. When the machine boots it checks at boot prom level all 5 interface and reports for all qfe interfaces "Link Down-Cable problem?". All qfe interfaces do not have a ethernet connx but I also do not want to deinstall the quad card. Is there any possibility to turn thoose "interface checks" off.
    Thanks Marcus

Never mind I just figured out that thoose checks just run after the boot cdrom command.

I think a protocol interference may cause this, but I don't know what really... thanks

Start by changing the wireless names to SMB compatible names.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Make sure the HP is in range of the router.
You can use the WPS setup via the utility main menu. There is no WPS button as such but apple has had to provide some way to handle this directly.

  • Cisco Prime infrastructure Change severity Switches and hubs - link down alarm

Hi, I want to change the severity of the link down alarm in the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3, but in the menu Administration -> System Settings -> Severity Configuration i can not find the alarm. Some body knows where is it? o where i can change the severity of that alarm?
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hi Rollin and Daniel,
the first test i did changing the severity was with a new installation, with no devices added and it worked, when i did it in a Prime infrastructure with devices added it didn´t work, well, for this Prime with devices i upgraded it with the patch for 1.3 version and now it works too, the alarms is ok as the alarm severity, this is the link for the patch:

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.0 Link-Down Alarm severity level

    Hi,
i have been looking for a way to lower the severity level of link-down Alarms. I use the threshhold utilization feature and want to generate an alarm when CPU or Memory goes over 90%, this works fine. Problem is that when you enable "Switches and Hubs" or "Routers" category to receive alarms under: Operate -> Alarms & Events -> Email Notifications, you define only Critical alarms should generate an email and Link-down is by default Critical.
Well you figure that you should be able to change this, but i can't find anything to change the severity under: Administration -> System Settings -> Severity Configuration.
Do anyone know if this is even possible? If so please tell me how..

    Hi,
    Yes it is possible.
    Changing Alarm Severities
You can change the severity level for newly generated alarms
    Note Existing alarms remain unchanged.
To change the severity level of newly generated alarms:
Step 1 Choose Administration > System Settings .
Step 2 Choose Severity Configuration from the left sidebar menu.
Step 3 Select the check box of the alarm condition whose severity level you want to change.
Step 4 From the Configure Severity Level drop-down list, choose the new severity level ( Critical , Major , Minor , Warning , Informational , or Reset to Default ).
Step 5 Click Go, then click OK.
Check the attached screen shot ..
    Thanks-
    Afroz
