SSD 128 or 256

Is a 128 ssd capacity large enough on the MBP 2011? It will be the boot drive which will only hold the os and apps. However I will need to install windows 7 as there are a few programs that I have will only run on windows. My files and backups will be on a external dock HHD.

It depends what the applications are that you are referring to. For the most part however, 128GB should be fine for OS X and Windows 7 and applications such as Office. Unless you need native GPU access for 3d graphics, I would suggest installing Windows 7 via virtualization (Parallels, Fusion, VirtualBox). This will allow you set up a virtual hard drive that will take up a minimal amount of space and expand to what you allocate only if you need it. Using BootCamp requires you to actually partition your drive and dedicate a set amount of space.
It's always nice to have the extra drive space, but I have been able to easily manage with a 128GB drive... especially if you plan on using in conjunction with an external drive.

  • MacBook air 128 or 256 flash storage

    Should I go with the MacBook air with 128 or 256 flash storage?

    I should just follow Dominic23 around the MacBook Air and post this link everywhere -
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Air_2012
    So yes it is possible to upgrade your MacBook Air with a larger SSD if you decide in the future that the current capacity is inadequate.
    Without knowing your needs, it's really impossible to determine if the upgrade is necessary. Do you have a lot of media (Music, Movies, Photos) on your current computer? Do you intend to continue to add to this collection? What is your purpose for the machine? How about applications, do you use multimedia applications or application suites that require a significant amount of installation space?

  • Video Memory 128 or 256 ? Second screen would works on an iMac ?

    I'm planning to buy an iMac 20". Here are my questions :
    1) I would want to play to X-plane. Is there really a difference between 128Mo and 256Mo on tha ATI ?
    2) Is it possible to plug a second flat screen on an iMac ?
    3) (Is an iMac really worth spending $1500 ?)
    Regards.

    I can't answer #1 because I am not a gamer although I would guess that the 256 ATI would work better after all it is a better card. #2 Yes you can hook a second screen up. #3 Yes and it's also worth buying Applecare which extends you warranty to three years. Good luck.

  • Hi guys ... broken SSD 128 GB ... the "Air" is consuming 0.5 GB !!! each minute !!! help me !!!

    yesterday evening i was printing out a calendar using iPhoto.
    it printed out 6 pages instead of 28.
    it said it was completed.
    i printed it out again.
    and everythng worked fine.
    but the system was very very slow.
    at the end of the print process, i reset the system several time.
    but nothing changed.
    now, i discovered that the system is "using" 500 MB each minute.
    i had 77 GB free ...
    now, doing anything, i have only 23 GB free.
    i checked the SSD, ad the disk utility said that the disk is broken and it needs to be fixed up, booting from another device ...
    but, with the Air, it is impossible (it seems to me).
    so ... anyone of you have an idea about what do i have to do?
    thanks.
    Mauro.

  • Flash Pro CS6 - not enough JVM memory - change 128 to 256, flash doesn't start.

    Hi,
    working on very large projects, I often get the "flash ran out of memory for the jvm" error.
    Restarting flash does the trick for another couple of hours, until I get that error again.
    It opens the jvm.ini file to let me increase Xmx memory value.
    I change it from -Xmx128m to -Xmx256m
    I restart flash, get the error: "Error initializing Java Runtime environment. You may need to reinstall Flash"
    I change it back to -Xmx128m, and flash starts again.
    But obviously, I again get the "not enough memory" error.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Also,
    after installing Flash Pro CS6, previously installed Flash Pro CS5.5 does not start, gives me the JVM initialization error all the time, regardless of which Xmx value I put for CS5.5

    back to square one again. The error message just popped up. So annoying.
    update:
    I removed some of the images I embed using the '[Embed tag'. And now it publishes again without the error. Weird because the published swf is only 1.8MB. Nothing crazy. So the problem seems related to embedding images using the [Embed tag...
    update 2 / FIX:
    Instead of using the embed tag to embed images I now have an 'assets' folder that I add to the AIR project (publish settings) that contains my images. Then I load the various images using the Loader. After an image is loaded I convert it to a Texture to use in Starling like so:
    var bitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(new BitmapData(currentBigTextureLoader.width, currentBigTextureLoader.height, true, 0x00000000));
    bitmap.bitmapData.draw(currentBigTextureLoader);
    bigTextures[aBigTexturesToLoad[nCurrentBigTextureToLoad]] = Texture.fromBitmap(bitmap);
    You can then use these Textures to display an image in Starling like so:
    var base:Image = new Image(bigTextures["CollectionBase"]);
    Bit of a workaround but al least I don't get the Java Error anymore

  • Installing system on m.2 SSD on Probook 650 G1

    I am going to buy Probook 650 G1 (L8T52ES) and I would like to buy m.2 SSD (128 or 256 GB) that would be used for system (Windows 7 or 10, I am not decided yet), keeping the 750 GB SATA for data. I have several questions:Can the m.2 SSD be used for system? Will it be detected by the Windows installer? Is there any tutorial or manual how to do this? Can this drive http://adata.com/us/ssd/feature/291 be used?If I buy a care pack from HP, will it be affected by the additionally installed m.2 SDD? Will the care pack cover also the m.2 SSD? If not, is there any way to get the notebook from HP with a m.2 SSD already included? I found some information about using m.2 SSD on Probook 650 G1 in forums, but it does not seem complete and provided solutions seem to be rather workarounds that direct methods to achieve what I am interested in.

    what bios version you are using?
    can you list the exact M.2 SSD (Transcend 256 GB)  mode/part number?

  • MBP for a New College Student - 128 SSD or 750 Serial ATA Drive?

    Hi, I'd like to start by thanking anyone who will take the time to answer my questions and have the patients to work with me. Also, I appologize if this thread is a repeat of another, I have searched and googled extensively, and have not found a thread that answers all of my questions. Lastly, I also appologize if I have posted in the wrong section, if you could please direct me to the correct section.
    So, I have just graduated high school and am entering college next week, and decided to purchase a Mac. While I have long been an iPhone user, I am new to Mac's, and am relitively clueless about computer hardware. When I purchase my computer, I plan on using it atleast 4 years, and maybe longer depending on my financial status entering graduate school. I don't plan on doing anything super extensive with my Mac, basic student needs, music, some pictures and hard core web browsing. I used to be big into PC games, but don't see myself going back, and do enjoy graphic designs with Photoshop and Illustrator.
    What I had in mind was the upgraded 13" MacBook Pro
    2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x4GB
    Does this seem fitting for what I had described? Then, my main question is the 128GB SSD worth the 500GB decrease in memory? I will always be on the move with my computer, I bring my current PC everywhere, and plan on using it in most classes. How big of an advantage is it to have no moving parts? I cannot afford more anything more than the 128GB SSD, but if I get the 2.5 GHz MBP, I can afford a 256GB SSD.
    Thanks again for any and all help.

    I wouldn't buy the Apple SSD - they simply want too much for it. Just buy the least expensive hard drive that is sold and upgrade the SSD to a 256 or 512GB yourself. It's a very simple procedure and you only need two screwdrivers to accomplish the installation. Apple wants, I think, $1000 for a 512GB SSD and you can get one for about $400 and install it yourself. 128GB just won't be enough - 256GB might be just right for you.
    You should also purchase an external drive for backups. I use Time Machine and have been quite happy with it -- it's saved my arse on two occassions.
    Good luck - call back with any questions.

  • Add 128 ssd to GT70 2PE-1041US

    have bought 2 adata ssd 128 can i add it to the existing sandisk ssd for raid 3
    or will there be trouble getting them to work together.
    How would i set this up either the 3 or the 2 together.
    have done burn recovery will this be ok to reinstall

    lol...I misunderstood.
    I would suggest you use the same manufacturer and the same model.
    I personally used 3 Sandisk SSDs to build the RAID before, one is bought several months ago and the other two are bought later. They are the same model in the same brand "Sandisk". They are just different batches of the products from Sandisk's factory.
    But one day one of the SSD failed. Then I bring them to one of my friends who is BIOS engineer. According to his experience, there's still a slight difference on the SSD's firmware (yes, it has firmware) even if I used the same models & the same brand of the SSDs. It just failed to boot up anymore. The RAID status also shows failed. So I removed the older SSD and rebuild the RAID configuration. Now it works fine.
    If you are trying to build the RAID on different models by different manufacturers, you'll put yourself under unpredictable situation more than that I met.

  • Logic X with rMBP SSD 16gb RAM insane CPU problem.

    Hi, just got a brand new MacBookPro retina SSD 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 gb RAM. The reason I bought this was because I was told it shall solve efficiency problems when working with LogicPro. Well, it didnt. It acts 10 times worse than my older MacBook. A few instances of native synths and plugs completely freak out my CPU. Just having Logic open eats up 56% of my CPU. On my older MacBook (with 8gigs Ram and a regular HD) I could run huge sessions with no CPU spike ever!!
    This is insane, why is it happening? I updated to the latest version of LogicProX, my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle - like when I was working FL studio on a crappy PC a decade ago... All that, on the latest "bad-***" laptop there is out there.... Is there any hope to work professionaly with this machine, or did I just waste a lot of money?
    P.s. I use a Metric Halo 2882 firewire interface connected via Thunderbolt. I tried to listen to the session after swithcing to built-in, same problems occure...
    H e e e l p  ! ! ! !
    Thanks : (

    my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle -
    If you didn't mistype.....
    You have set up things completely the opposite to what you need for your setup.... and so, to help prevent the issues...
    Go to LPX's audio prefs... and try the following;
    Your i7 has 8 cores not just 4.. (4 real and 4 virtual) so set according...
    Having the I/O Buffer size set to minimum increases the loads on the system, not decreases.. so change that setting... If you have it set to 32, increase it to 64 or even 128 or 256 samples... and test with each change to see how you get on....
    Also what do the actual latency figures show.. (Just below I/O buffer size...) after each change...
    Finally, check what you have set the Process Buffer Range to.... If it's set to small.. set it to medium and test... and then to large and test.... and again see how you get on.

  • Value of SSD in New MacBook Pros?

    I just sold my 2.6Ghz MBP and have the money to get a 2.93 15" MBP. Question: I was considering getting the 2.66 and using the extra money to get a 128 or 256 gb ssd instead of the standard sata drive. are there any sites that show the speed benefits of SSds in MBS? What about battery life?
    I know it's a big expense but if it truly is faster and helps battery life then I'm all in.

    I'd rather put in the investment in the faster proccessor now, as you can't (practically) upgrade it later, while you can easily swap out a hard drive for a SSD as they become more affordable.
