Ssd and the Mac App Store
I have an ssd for my boot disk and keep everything else (including my home dir) on a separate hdd. The only applications I keep on the ssd are the OS X applications (in /Applications) and my own "key" applications (which I place in a separate directory on the ssd).
As I understand it (based on reading since I haven't updated to 10.6.6) downloads from the App store go directly into the /Applications folder. The way I control my system (a) I download all stuff to my ~/Downloads directory, (b) test out the new download to decide whether it has problems and whether I want to keep it, and (c) I decide where I want to put it and whether to get rid of the previous version if the download is an update.
Now of course I have backups so keeping previous versions is always available. But I don't like the idea of this app store stuff downloading directly into /Applications which is my ssd. It's an ssd, an OWC 120GB ssd with the Sandforce controller, but a ssd none the less. So I'm always concerned about needless wear on the ssd.
Comments/Opinions?
I was in a simmilar boat as some of you. I had bought a 60GB SSD, but my boot drive was currently using 180GB of data, where should i put all that ****? It wasnt gonna be enough to just move my home folder (althought that would have done most of the job). I looked around online and found symlinks. Think of symlinks as alias's that are way way more powerful. Basicly they make the computer think a given file or folder is on the boot drive, where it should be, but in relaity, its on your secoundary drive. See the link below for more info. Heres the rather short list of files i moved to my secoundary drive, just to give you guys some ideas:
1. Steam games ~60GB
2. Apple dev documentation 1.4 GB
3. GarageBand libraries 1.4 GB
4. iPhone backup files 7.86 GB
5. iTunes lib ~60GB (you can use itunes to move it instead
6. iPhoto lib ~15GB
7. sleepimage file (this is the file that backs up your ram when you put your mac to sleep, its the same size as yoru RAM) 6GB
now my boot drive is a comfortable 40/60 GB, but most of my homefolder (including the system files that you want to be accessed quickly) are on my SSD, but all the big stuff, is safe on my HDD. My symlinks didnt break when i cloned from my HDD to my SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner. All of this is free, and took me under an hour, but save me a boatload by not having to buy a bigger SSD drive.
Hope this answers your questions

PS. I have an OWC 60GB 3g drive, it works amazingly fast

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro from 2008 which is the model before they became unibody. I have been having trouble using some of the built-in apps ever since i updated to 10.7.4. I cant use mail or the Mac App store becuase when i go to click on a link to purchase something in the Mac App Store of create a new email in Mail, the app just crashes. I am then asked to reopen the app and i try to do the same thing again and they same thing happens. Its really painful as i want to download applications and access my mail on my mac. Could you guys please get back to me on with somethings that i could try to get these apps working again.
ThanksHi Richard,

Is there a difference between apple app store and the mac app store
i keep hearing about the mac app store, is there a difference between that and the regualr app store i use for iphone
Depends upon to whom you are speaking. There is the iTunes Store, sometimes called the App Store, from which Apple vends apps for iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Then there is the Mac App Store, MAS, also sometimes referred to as the App Store rather than the Mac App Store where Apple vends software for Mac computers.

OSX Lion and the Mac App Store
I have 2 computers... I need to buy OSX Lion two times (one for each computer in the mac app store) or I only need to buy it once and I can install it in my 2 computers?
Thank you!!ricardofromvalencia wrote:

Clean Lion install and the Mac App Store issues
Hi,
I'm having a great week with lion.
First FileVault failed and encryption, causing corruption on the disk. Then the timemachine backup was corrupted in continous progress status.
After formatting my iMac hard drive and doing a clean install and slowing piecing my data together from the failed timemachine backup and a old CCC backup, I've found I can't reinstall the apps I got from the Mac App Store. The apps are marked as installed but ofcourse they aren't since I formatted my hard drive.
Seriously Apple is this a beta release? I thought only Microsolf used its user base as application testers. Is there a fix or do i need to download the apps again from the developer site if they are available?ricardofromvalencia wrote:

What is the difference between regular FaceTime and the Mac App Store FaceTime?
The one in the App Store costs €0,89. How is this one differend?
Yup.
The difference is about a bit.
It's a bit that, when set, allows a database to be in a permanent state of recovery, allowing repeated applications of redo. When a particular recovery operation has finished applying its quota of redo, the database sits there waiting for the next dollop.
A normal controlfile doesn't have that bit set, and when you do 'recover database' to it, it gets to the end of the redo stream and says 'Media Recovery Complete'. No further redo can then be applied to that database, meaning you can't keep a normal database in a permanent state of being recovered. -
HT4710 Updates for iPhoto and iMovie in the Mac App Store
Hi,
I recently bought a new computer running Lion. When I started using the computer, I opened the Mac App Store and signed in with my Apple ID (the same one I've always used for buying apps from there, music from the iTunes store, and apps for my iPhone). I am able to easily access and download my old purchased apps to my new computer without a problem. However, in the updates section it shows updates available for both iPhoto and iMovie, but when I go to update them I get this message, "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." iPhoto and iMovie came on the new computer, and the only Apple ID account that I have ever used is the one that I am currently signed in under. Does anyone have any idea how I can get these updates, or at the very minimum, get rid of them so that they do not show up anymore (frankly, I find the red circle very annoying, and I don't really use either of these apps so I'm not too concerned about them).
Thanks!
Sorry, I found a few other questions about this same thing after posting, so I'll try those solutions.Open iTunes on the new Mac, sign into your account and view your account information. There is a section for Purchase History where you can view the invoices for everything that you have ever bought from the iTunes stores and the Mac App Store.

How do I use my Itunes credit on the Mac App store
I have a credit in iTunes which I wish to use to buy some apps on the Mac App store. However it doesnt seem to be taking that payment method. How do I solve this?
iTunes and the Mac App Store are the same account and credits redeemed for one are available for the other. The issue may be that you have not allowed for the sales tax that the US store applies in the final steps of a sale. US prices do not yet have the local sales tax added. If the credit does nt cover the total the sustem will ask for another payment method to cover the remaining balance.

Is there a way to get receipts for previously purchased items in the Mac App store?
I just switched computers and did not save all of my receipts from my previously purchased items from the Mac app store. I was wondering if there was any way to retrieve receipts that showed how much I paid and when I bought the items.
Open iTunes on the new Mac, sign into your account and view your account information. There is a section for Purchase History where you can view the invoices for everything that you have ever bought from the iTunes stores and the Mac App Store.

I bought the djay app for my MacBook, but now I wanted to transfer it to my iPad. I was just curious if this was possible? Cause I don't really want to have to pay for it again. Thank you!
Hello,
Sadly you can't do that.
The App Store in iTunes is for iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and the Mac App Store for OS X. -
Can I use my iTunes money, that I redeemed off a gift card, in the Mac App Store
I have money on my iTunes account and was wondering if I could buy apps on the App Store with it???
You should be able to - I've used iTunes gift cards to purchase from iTunes, iTunes app store, ibookstore and the Mac app store.

Cannot connect to; Software Update, iTunes or the Mac App Store.
I updated to Lion on launch day and had problems with Software Update, iTunes and the Mac App Store connecting to the internet.
I was completely connected to the interent, so people told me to wait it out as the servers were probably struggling.
However, it's been two weeks and I still get this message:
It's the same with iTunes as well as the mac app store.
I'm at a loss as I can't update my computer.
Anyone else have the same problem?same problem here
This solution work fine with me :
1. Systems Preferences -> Network
2. Under "Wi-Fi", click on the "Advanced" button.
3. Under the "DNS" tab, add the Google Public DNS - 8.8.8.8
4. Click OK, then click Apply.
5. Turn WiFi OFF, then turn it back ON again.

My Mid-2011 Macbook Air 13-inch (OSX 10.8.1 Mountain Lion) becomes hot to the touch when trying to delete large documents, watching videos after waking it from sleep-mode and when installing applications from the Mac App Store. This has also been happening with OSX Lion before I upgraded it to Mountain Lion.

What needed to be done the day that you set up the new Mac was go into the Mac App Store (MAS), sign into your iTunes/MAS Apple ID, go to the Purchases pane and Accept the iLife apps that would have been there in a special section. That would have sent you Mac's unique identifier code to Apple's servers and verified that this Mac was eligible for the bundled iLife suite and then registered these apps into your MAS account.
You might try going to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist, delete the adption plist, restart the Mac and then go to the Purchaes pane and see if you can Accept the apps into your account. -
Tried to open a file I created in Numbers a while ago, which I modified on 11/4/13, and got a message that I needed a newer version of Numbers. When I went to the Mac App Store it shows that the new version is already installed and there doesn't seem to be a way to reinstall it. When I checked "About Numbers" on my MacBook it shows "Numbers '09 version 2.3". Any suggestions as to how I can get the new version installed?
Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

I am trying to download new version of iTunes from App store having purchased it on my laptop. When I try to download on my iMac I get the following message:
Error message when I try to download new iTunes as follows: iPhoto 7.1.5 is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App Store - and then I am asked if I want to buy it again. I don't understand the error message and I don't want to purchase the new version again.
Also, since upgrading to Lion my videos (from Sanyo Xacti camera) do not play on iTunes. I can only open photos.
Thank you.Make a back up of your Library. Now you can update without fear.

Checking Repair History on Used MacBook Pro
I'm thinking of buying a used MacBook Pro off of someone. I believe there is a link where you can check the units repair history via its serial number? Does anyone know where that link is on the Apple Website? Thanks JB
