SSD as second hard drive, now CPU fan isn't working?

Warranty issues aside, I recently installed an OWC 115GB Mercury EXTREME Pro SSD as a second hard drive in my 27/i5 Mid 2010 2.8GHz iMac.  I did not change any other configuration setting and the original hard drive is configured as shipped.  After shutting everything up the internal fan(s) spin extremely loud (especially on the left/cpu side as you are facing the screen).  I installed istat pro and while the temperatures look good to me, it says the CPU fan is not running.  I've been searching online for days and can't find anyone else that has the same problem.  I've taken the iMac apart twice since the problem started and can't find anything broken, connected upside down, or plugged into the wrong spot.  Has anyone by chance run into this before?  Thanks for the help!  I posted a copy of the istat readings below.

Hey,
I heard something about this problem with 2009/2010 imacs: putting in harddrives by your self causes problems with the fan (spinning at full speed all the time), because they are using special harddrives that have a heat sensor built in. without this built in heatsensor, the system doesnt know the temperature of the hardware and runs the fan full throttle just to be sure it doesnt get to hot.
i only have a german source for this though: http://www.macnews.de/mac/imac-2011-festplatte-lasst-sich-dank-proprietarer-appl e-firmware-nicht-austauschen-173448
According to that source there are two ways to fix the problem: eather you use a harddrive that carries a built in heat sensor, or you put in an externel heatsensor.
aaah: just found an english source:
http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
this should be your issue. i hope i could help!

  • CPU fan isn't working on Hermes 845GV full and Lite

    well
i have here an hermes 845GV and when i switch it on, the cpu fan starts for about half an second and stops then, same problem with the lite version.
so, can this problem be solved or do i have to send it back to msi? (both comps are new)
    thx schBORG

it works fine, except the cpu fan isn't working, it only starts for about half a sec when u switch it on, when u connect the cable with the plug for the 2 side fans it works fine, but when the cpu fan isn't working, the cpu gets too hot and the computer crashes, and so the os installation is destroyed, that's the reason why i found that problem

  • Upgraded hard drive, now only Photoshop from CS5 works and other programs do not

I recently changed out my hard drive for a bigger one during a computer upgrade.  I deactivated my CS5 through Photoshop, and then changed out the hardware.  I brought the programs back over and now only Photoshop works and the other programs of CS5 do not work.  Is the license unique for each one?  I assumed I only needed to deactivate one member of the CS5 family.  What can I do now that I have a new hard drive?

If by "brought the programs back over" you mean you somehow transferred them from the old drive to the new one, transferring does not usually work.  Adobe programs need to be installed using installations files.  If you need to you can download those files thru the following page: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-product-downloads.html

  • Windows 8 will not activate with new SSD (second) hard drive

I added a new SSD drive in the second hard drive bay. I used the HP restoration media to install Windows 8 on the new SSD drive. Windows 8 will not activate. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with HP support (and paying $150), they told me to contact Microsoft. After spending some time with Microsoft, they told me that the Windows product key is being locked by HP, and there is nothing they can do.

    Hi badgerbuzz,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publically post ( serial numbers and case details).

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board.  Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!
    Win 8.1 64 bit.
This is the hard drive I plan to buy.  The spec says XP, Vista, Win 7, but am I right in thinking it should work with win 8.1

As I said to you in the other cross posting (desktop hardware):
You can obtain 3.5" hard drive cage from here for $11 shipped.  Granted it has a 120mm fan and space for 4 drives, but for the price, you can mod/cut all you want.
Now your other issue/question:  You will want a SataIII 6GB/sec drive 2TB, 7200 RPM.

  • Installing windows 7 on second hard drive in macbook pro 7

Dear fellow forumers. I am currently having trouble installing windows 7 on my second hard disk as whenever I restart my laptop after the bootcamp assistant has made a partition in the HDD, instead of going into windows installation, my laptop screen shows a blank/black screen with a blinking dash at the top corner. I am currently using a 15" macbook pro 2011, installed an OWC ssd as my primary hard drive where I run my os Lion and windows (in another partition). Due to insufficient disk space with the applications in both OS, i am now attempting to install a second windows 7 in a second hard drive which I split the HDD equally into two partitions (one formatted for windows installation and the other for data storage). Just for the information, I am also installing the windows 7 via an external optical drive.
I have been running out of wits as I have been researching whole night about possible oslution but it seems that my problem is quite a peculiar one. Will really appreciat any help that I could receive.
lastly, is it possible to run parallel desktop from my ssd (Primary hard drive) and then attempt to import the bootcamp from my second hard drive?

Well it's not particularly hard, I just don't see why its necessary. It seems silly that I've got to physically start removing hardware from my computer just to get an OS to install on a specific drive.
I was under the impression the Boot Camp gave the option of where to install Windows, as in other drives from the ones with OSX on them.

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.
Anyways I would appreciate all the hel I could get, thanks
    Thank You

  • W540 second hard drive

I have just ordered a w540 and I'm wondering if I can add a second hard drive (actually what I want to install is an SSD) to it. Apologies if this has been answered before, in which case I failed to find the appropriate message
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hey guys,
I'm using my W520 now for more than 3 years and now I'm looking for a new one. I use a second ssd in my w520 and love it. This ability is a must have for my new laptop.
I've done some research and found three different adapters. They are called "Hard Drive Bay".
There is the version 3, which I have I think, ??mm: 43N3412
Then there seem to be a version 4, 9.5mm: 0B47315
And it seems there is another type, also version 3, 12.7mm: 0A65623
I'm not quite sure if the dimension means the hdd thickness or the bay thickness.
Furthermore the version 3 is listed as an official accessory for the W520. But no bay is listed for the W530!! For the W540 a list doesn't exist yet.
I hope someone can bring more light into here

  • Question about a second hard drive..

    13" MacBook Pro, Mid 2012 (Non-Retina)
Hello, in early December when in the Apple store, I was torn between a MacBook Air and Pro. After talking it over and hearing the basics from the Apple store guy, he mentioned how many people use the DVD Drive space in their Pros to fit a second hard drive! Now I'm all set up with my Pro, I'm wondering what kind of benefits this could have, so I have two questions...
    1.  How do I do this? Is there a spare HDD cable inside the machine? :S
    2. When I fit a new HDD in the DVD Drive space can I use it as a 'seperate backup' for the other? E.g. When on the system open Time Machine and select the other internal drive as backup.
Also, I'm considering buying an OCZ 240GB SSD drive for my main and maxing ram to 8GB!
Thanks for taking the time to read and potential answers!

Others on here have done this, you can search in the box with the blue Search button towards the upper right of the page.  But it is involved.  You should also check the impact on your warranty and AppleCare if you bought that...Apple only permits installation of ram and replacement of the hard drive under the warranty.
There are advnatages to keeping the optical drive, such as burning disks, loading software, files, etc.  An external hard drive is a good solution to the extra storage issue, and so easy to just plug in and partition and format how you want them to work.
I like having the option of the optical drive plus the external drive, which is why I have external drives for all of my Macs.

  • Problems installing second hard drive in HP Pavilion M7-1015dx laptop.

I just bought a new HP Pavilion M7-1015dx. I have successfully installed an SSD drive as the primary hard drive and now I want to use the 1tb hard drive that the computer came with as data and install it in the second hard drive bay. I have a cable that I used from my old HP DV7 when I had a second hard drive but I am having issues with my M7-1015dx laptop.
When I plug the sata cable into the second connector on the laptop and attach my hard drive (I have tried several hard drives) and go to power the laptop on, the power light just blinks a few times. Now I know there is something wrong for I just purchased the laptop two days ago... I got the idea to try the cable that I used to plug into the second connect to check and see if I plugged it into the first and I got the same issue, power light blinking. So I am wondering if it is the cable... is this possible? Are there different rated sata cables? I also tried the cable the came with my new laptop to make sure that it just wasn't the second port - I tried plugging it in to the second port with a hard drive attached and the laptop this time turned on but asked for a bootable disk because it requires boot disk to be in the 1st hard drive bay connection which I knew. I just want to give all the information so that I can get this fixed.
    Please help me

    Hey Brother-Brad,
I'm sorry you're running into issues installing a second hard drive. Your issue may not be the cable. Do you have a working hard drive installed currently with Window on it?
    If so,
    1. In Windows, Click the Start button.
    2. Type 'hard disk'
    3. Click on 'Create and format hard disk partitions' (aka Disk Management)
    4. Look at Disk 0 listed at the bottom in the middle. Does it say Basic or Dynamic?
    5. If it says Basic, right-click it and select Convert to Dynamic.
Hard drives must be set as Dynamic for dual hard drives to be recognized.
Let me know the results when you get a chance

  • Problems with second hard drive

I bought my PowerMac G5 new in 2005 and about two years after I got it, I installed a second internal hard drive. I didn't have any problems with the drive until about six months ago (which was when I moved, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it). Around that point, I started hearing a single, loud click followed by a slight winding down noise. Then, my computer would almost completely freeze. After a few moments, I would hear a bunch of soft clicks and my computer would go back to normal. I figured that it was a problem with one of the hard drives, but I wasn't sure what to do.
Later on, the problem got more severe, lasting more like 30 seconds. When my second drive unmounted during one of these episodes, I shut my computer down, opened the case, took both plugs out of the second hard drive, put them back in, and started up my computer again. After that, my computer was running great again. But, a few weeks later, the symptoms started up again.
So, I've gone through the same cable un-plug and re-plug process whenever the drive unmounts. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't seem to help at all. Altogether, I think that the second drive has unmounted about five or six times. I haven't had this problem at all with the original hard drive and I haven't noticed any other problems with my computer. (Well, okay, there's the rare occasion when, instead of going to sleep, it turns the screen black and puts the fans on full blast.)
Could the drive itself be going bad and it has nothing to do with the cables? I have a utility installed that always monitors the SMART status and it hasn't reported any problems. Are there any other troubleshooting steps I should take? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Before I bought DiskWarrior, I thought I'd try some troubleshooting with the software I have on hand. But while I was doing that, the problem got worse. Now, I'm having major problems just getting the computer to boot. I'll give you the rundown on what's happened. It goes through a few boneheaded twists and turns and goes on at great length, but I thought I'd relate it all in the hopes that someone can see a likely pattern.
My first thought was the Apple hardware test, which I had thought was on the Mac OS 10.5 install DVD. So naturally, I didn't see the hardware test listed under Utilities. But while I had it up, I used Disk Utility to do repairs on both hard drives (checking both the disk and permissions). It found no problems on the 2nd hard drive, but found a few errors with "leaves" on the booting drive. It also found a bunch of issues with the permissions, but I don't think it was anything out of the ordinary.
Just for the heck of it, I asked it to run the repairs again. Not long into that, I got what I think is a kernel panic (overlaid message saying I needed to restart my computer in a few languages). It also sped up the fans.
I pushed the power button to shut it down, then started it up again. I heard the startup chime, then nothing but a black screen and the ol' hyperactive fans. I went through that several times before I was finally able to boot from the DVD again. Then, I changed the startup disk back to my usual boot volume and restarted. I had to go through the black screen and insane fans several more times before I could boot normally.
Next, I thought I'd try OnyX to see what it could do. Which might not be much, but I had it repair the disks again and also had it run the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts.
I checked into the black screen & hyperactive fans booting problem elsewhere in the forums, and saw that it was recommended to run the Apple hardware test and also found the correct procedure for doing so, which was to insert the PowerMac G5 install disc (not the Mac OS X upgrade DVD) and press Option when booting. I loaded the disc, restarted, and held down the Option key, but before I could get anything to actually load, I had several more sessions with the black screen of fans.
Regarding that boot problem, I've sometimes seen the red light inside the case turn on almost immediately after I turn on the computer. Other times, it will not light up by itself. But, when I hold the power button in to shut it down, the red light briefly turns on before the unit shuts down. I've also noticed that the light on the Caps Lock button is coming on and staying on when I'm trying to start the computer.
So, after several tries, I checked my G5 User's Guide and it said to disconnect any external devices before trying the hardware test. I had a USB thumb drive plugged in and a FireWire drive hooked up for Time Machine backups, so I took both of them out. Once again, I tried starting up with Option held down and this time, it worked. The fans started running at full blast after I selected the hardware test, which I hoped was normal. So, I asked it to run the extended test and it found no problems. I restarted my computer without reconnecting anything and, at least for now, it's working normally.
    Any new thoughts?

  • Hello, I have a G5 PPC. I want to install a copy of Entourage on the second hard drive. Can I do that or will it create problems for the processor?

    Hi everyone
I had a very old intel iMac from late 2006 which was dying now dead. I just managed to copy the Entourage folder onto an external hard drive before the iMac gave up the ghost. But I could not open the Entourage copy on the G5 PPC. each time i tried to do so the PPC copy of Entourage would open instead.I have emails on the PPC copy and do not want to lose them. I was wondering if it would be possible to install another copy of Entourage on the second hard drive? I was hoping that by doing that I could access the information from the iMac which has been copied to an external hard drive.
Any help would be very very welcome.

I don't think MS lets you install Entourage outside of an active system folder. However, you can install a fresh copy of Entourage on the G5's hard drive (if you have Office 2008 or lower), then use Entrouge's Import command to move the data files from the old hard drive.
We're done this several times as we've upgraded either computers or Entourage.
However, I think that, before you act, you should also ask in Microsoft's user forums here:
    Office for Mac forums
They are excellent and often an employee of their Macintosh unit will assist in answering.
