SSD as system disk while users folder + data on HDD

Hey there, I want to install SSD in my Mac Pro and since its only 120GB - use it only for system and Apps. While all my user data (photos, movies, music random files) I want to store on my HDD. Is it possible to do it that way, so the system knows where it should put Apps and where downloaded content and all the other stuff should go?

~/Library is hidden unless you unhide. It HAS to exist where user accounts are.
The link is not what you want, it is hybrid SSD Fusion HDD setup.
I leave ~/Library where it is, right, and don't worry and just link to other hard drive - after playing and trying to move user account to another drive, I swap boot drives a lot and it was easier.
NetInfo and later Accounts control panel and now is it "Users"? but it is easy for anyone to point to another disk drive.

I went from 120GB SSD (and that after trying to use 40GB) to 250GB and eventually 500GB SSD

  • How best use the four internal disks for user folder?

    Hi everyone
    With the addition of a new boot disk in the second optical bay i wish to restructure my user folder. It has so far lived on one drive which i have backed up every day to one of the other internals (i also have external backups). One reason i have installed a new boot disk in the optical bay is that i have run out of space on the user folder drive (and its backup drive).
    I am now wondering how i should set up the four internals if i want to use all of them for the user folder and an internal backup. Performance is an important consideration for me.
    I know raid setups are not backups but given that i also have external backup could i use, for instance, raid 1 or 1+0 to mimic the current two-disk setup? Which would be preferable and are there other alternative (such as having some subfolders of the user folder, like photos and documents, on one disk and the rest of the subfolders on another disk)?
    Thanks for your help
    /p

    I said forget those fancy software 0+1 or 10; they aren't supported, have high overhead, and you need 4 drives of same and would still not have enough space. Why bring it up again, it's still no in my book and from trouble it can be.
    I'm not even a fan of Apple mirror arrays. they are fine for where 24/7 and live audio recording and to protect from the rare drive failure is all. And then I use SoftRAID.com ($149).
    Full to me means less than 20% free. Though I tend to keep drives closer to 35-40% free. Less than 10-15% or less than 10-20GB can be hazardous.
    Don't put scratch on boot drive. Get more RAM, have another drive or two for scratch if necessary unless it doesn't impact you. It should though. Spotlight can get in the way, needs to be disabled so having a dedicated volume on another drive has always worked best.

  • Message "insert system disk" while booting Portege M700

    Hello everyone,
    my friend give me his old toshiba Portege M700 and I have problem with it.
    When it starts up just shows toshiba logo and then this "please insert system disk and press any key when ready.
    I haven't any disk from where can i download the iso and then burn to disk or something like that, I really don't know much about pcs and sorry for my bad english, please help me if anyone can
    thanks a lot

    Hi
    Unfortunately, its not possible to download the Toshiba image.
    In case you dont have a recovery disk for your notebook model, visit this page to order such disk: http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
    But Im not quite sure if you will be able to order the disk because of the notebook age
    However, the message: insert system disk appears because the system is not installed on the Toshiba Portege notebook, therefore it asks for the disk.
    Of course you can use the clean Microsoft Windows disk to install the system the essential drivers are available on Toshiba EU driver page therefore the Toshiba image is not necessary to reinstall the system if your are own a MS Windows disk

  • Ssd as system disk

    I'm trying to add an 120 GB OCZ SSD to my envy d7 7223cl with a 600GB HD. I can not get the system copied so that it will boot from the SSD in the first position. This is true whether or not HD is in the 2nd position. 120GB is plenty for the OS (win 8.1) but it doesn't seem to work even when the copy to the smaller c: gets all the data.

  • Do validations on fields while User enters data thru SM30

    Hi All,
    I am creating a custom table and would like to validate the data when user is entering the data thru SM30 manually and display appropiate status or error messages if the data entered is wrong. Also i have to allow only those users that are assigned for that role to access the table and should be able to Add and Update but not delete any record from the table. This is Urgent as i have to get this done real quick and then test my program on it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I contain my OS purely on a small SSD drive, but store all user data on an additional internal HDD?

    Solid state drives are still pretty expensive, but the main benefit of SSD we all want doesn't require a lot of space. How do I keep the OS and Applications on the solid state, and the user data on an additional HDD inside of a Mac Pro?
    I'm afraid that if I just store my media/docs folders on the second drive (which, obviously take up the most space), I'm still operating within a small (ideally 64GB SSD) solid state. Which means any time I save something to my desktop or downloads folder I'm taking up space on the SSD rather then the HDD. On the flip side, I dont want put my whole user folder on the HDD because (correct me if I'm wrong) won't the apps launch from the HDD? Then you would lose the benefit of solid state (other then I/O times...).
    Does this make sense? I feel like there has the be a straight forward way to do this.
    Thanks for your help!

    A small home folder - yours - on the SSD is a way to improve performance because it does take a lot of hits and I/O's and while there is the "protect your SSD from writes" drives are also there to be used and as long as it isn't too tiny and has 40GB+ of free space, a month's worth if writes, use it and let the firmware and controller inside do all the agressive background work, even w/o TRIM.
    As I said I only want my key apps on the SSD and less used stuff off it.  If I wanted to fully maximize the disk performance then of course I would keep everything on the SSD.  But I prefer the convenience of having a common home dir across any volume I can to boot from.
    Putting the /Users on another drive via hard link didn't always work.
    I certainly never suggested that and I agree, its problematic.
    Not having a small user makes it harder.
    As I said above I always have another boot drive available to fall back on I also always have root (and lets not debate the pros and cons about root).  And then there's also my unmounted external backups too.

  • Snow Leopard How to install User folder on another hard disk

    I am going to install a new hard disk on my macpro.
    I would like to have everything installed on my old hard disk but user folder installed on my new hard disk.
    Is it possible ? No problems ?
    What´s necessary ?

    Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your entire home folder from the old HD to the new one. Then go to System Preferenes -> Accounts -> right-click your account -> Advanced options -> type the path to your new home folder in the Home directory field. If, for example, your new home folder is on the disk named "External", the path would be:
    /Volumes/External/yourusername

  • How do I move my user folder back to my main drive

    A while back, I bought a 265 GB SSD. It was too small to accommodate both the system and my user folder so I moved the user folder to another drive.
    Now that SSD prices have come down, I have purchased a larger SSD. I want to add this drive, install Mavericks and then pull my user folder back to it.
    What I am thinking I can do, but would like input, is the following:
    First, this is a Mac Pro so the old SSD, the new SSD, and HD containing my User Folder are all inside.
    1. Install Mavericks on the new SSD and create an account with the same name as the existing one. (This should create a new, relatively empty user folder on the new SSD).
    2. Use Advance User settings to point to the current user folder on the HD and reboot.
    3. Drag contents of the User folder from the HD into the New user folder on the new SSD.
    4. Use Advance User settings to point to the new User folder on the New SSD and reboot.
    Does anyone see any problems with this? Any assistance is appreciated.

    If you create another user on your new drive, then drag your old user to the Users folder, then create amother user with the same name, then it should ask if you want to use the current folder.

  • How To Copy User Folder/Application Folder To Fresh Drive

    I have a friend's iMac G5 whose hard drive went south. Fortunately I was able to copy its contents onto an external firewire drive before it totally lost its data. I installed a new hard drive in the iMac and put on a fresh copy of Leopard and iLife '80 - using my friend's same name for the user folder. Migration Assistant won't see the folder as it is on a connected but not bootable drive. So I need to manually drag over her data but I am concerned about just how to do this in a way that won't put me (and her) in "permissions agony." What's the best way to do this? Her system was running Tiger 10.4.11.
    Plus the same is the case for her old applications folder. How can I get all that including the files that go into various libraries. Migration assistant would be so wonderful as it handles all that stuff...any help with this part also?
    Thanks in advance.

    I was able to have a fairly successful conclusion to my dilemma. I had copied her information using Retrospect's Duplicate function and all her data was copied onto a firewire drive. This was done as her drive was going south before it totally deteriorated. I made a new administrative user with a slightly different user name (adding a 1 to her name) and copied all the user folder data over. Then I deleted the original user (and the 1 on her new user name) and was left with all her stuff in good shape with no permission problems that couldn't be taken care of with Disk Utility. Of course the Applications folder was one I didn't bother with because of how so many applications install things all over the place, preferences, application support folders, etc.; but, after a reinstall of most of her applications, things to seem to be working quite well. A few of her applications that I had no install for, I copied over successfully from her old application folder itself. Not bad.
    I bought a Time Capsule for her use and am backing up that way for her...as well doing a Super Duper incremental back also onto the Time Capsule.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Copying over "users" folder from Mac OS 10.3.8

    Hello,
    I am doing an upgrade from a G4 with 10.3.9 to G5 with Mac OS 10.4.8
    Can I simply copy over the users folder from 10.3.9?
    I have a feeling this will not work....?
    Better to do it with Migration assistant, or just grab specific things I need, such as pluggins I installed for my audio applications such as Protools & Logic Audio...

    Scott:
    Here's an alternative from Niel:Copying Over an Account to a different Volume
    Copying an Account directly by dragging or by cloning will not change the NetInfo information needed for the Account to be properly recognized.
    To properly set up NetInfo
    *Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts
    *Click on padlock and authenticate
    *Click on plus sign under Login Options to add a new account.
    *Set up an account and check box to allow user to administer.
    *Log out of current account and log in to new Admin account
    *Connect computer (Host) to computer with account to be transferred (Target) via Firewire ports.
    *Start Target computer and hold down “T” key immediately after chime to mount HDD on Host computer desktop via Firewire Target Disk Mode
    * Drag Home folder from Target Disk to Users Folder on Host and rename it. (If you get an error message about permissions when doing the copy, click button to Authenticate and enter your password; alternatively, you can turn permissions off for the source disk in the Get Info window.)
    *Switch names between copied Folder and Home Folder (with house icon) by putting 2 after Home Folder name, and naming newly copied Folder with account name (original home folder name).
    *To see that copied folder is owned by the account that is logged in select folder and Get Info (Command + i), then go to Ownership & Permissions.
    *Log out of account by going to the Apple Menu and selecting Log out Account Name (Command + Shift + Q)
    *Log back in to account.
    *If the account was successfully copied, you may uncheck Allow User to Administer option in Apple Menu/System Preferences/Accounts if you choose.
    with thanks to Niel
    Good luck.

  • Need to add number of days to users end date.

    Hi,
    I have a code where we are adding number of days(30) to current date and then updating user's end date in IDM DB.
    Now we have a requirement where we need to add number of days(30) to existing end date of user instead of adding to current date.
    *public String incrementDate(int daysToAdd)
         // Start date
         log.info("NotifyLastDayOfService::incrementDate(): Enter");
         SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd 00:00:00");
         Calendar c = Calendar.getInstance();

         String newDate = sdf.format(c.getTime());
         log.info("NotifyLastDayOfService::incrementDate(): Exit");
         return newDate;
    Have any body implemented this scenario?
    Please suggest.

    Hi Nayan,
    Here is the code:
    System.out.println("----inside increment date method-----");

  • No system available for user mapping in create new group.

    Hi Experts,
    I faced this problem when i create a new group
    "There are no systems available for user mapping for the selected principal."
    i checked that my server is running well with other groups.
    i would just like to ask what determines the "selected principal"? is it because i select the wrong roles or the roles does not need the system?
    i'm confused as some previous groups i created works well until this new group, i've tried to create a new 1 but the problem still exsist.
    Thanks.

    hi,
    Define permission to the system that you have created.
    right click on hte system that you have ccreated  - > in properties dropdown go to permissions -> search the group/ user for which you want to map this system - > and give permission as enduser.
    this will make your system accessible while user mapping.
    regards,

  • Migrating a two ssd macbook pro to newer model (1ssd for system, 1ssd for user home folder)

    I want to migrate / transfer the two fast SSDs I have now in an end 2008 macbook pro into a newer mid 2012 macbook pro that is empty and could not find any good instructions on how to do such a move. Both are running the latest version of Mavericks.
    On one SSD (265 gig) is the system and applications and on the other 1TB SSD in the optical drive slot are the user accounts - except one safety user account with admin priviledges on the system SSD.
    My understanding is that it is not recommended to just swap the system drive from the old macbook to the newer one since there might be complications with drivers etc building up.
    My current guess for the best process is to
    1. migrate with migration assistant the system from the current SSD to the new slower spinning hard drive on the new macbook pro.
    2. swap the two (putting the SSD from the old one to the new macbook, starting in recovery mode and installing mavericks and migrating the migrated system back to the new macbook pro)
    3. put the 1TB user folder SSD into the optibay on the new macbook pro, create a new user account with the same name as the one used on the old macbook pro and it should find the user directory with the same name on the second harddrive, ask me if I want to use it and do so ...
    Is this was the geniouses out here would recommend also?
    My secondary problem is that I have already 5 computers associated to my apple ID and thus am wondering how I can do this transfer without running into problems caused by this - all hints and tips most welcome.

    I have done what you suggested. However, I have to disagree with you about the 'third party' comment. Although those minor issues were on there which I picked up on shortly afterwards, they were easily removed. It hasn't CHANGED the symptoms I described about my mac. Both items are removed (growl only tends to make your mac 'lag' and that's not the problem I'm having)
    I am still having all the above issues, regardless of my mac being fully minus third party items. This mac hasn't had any heavy use, or had many applications installed on it ect, there is really no reason for it to be failing. I'd understand if it was old, but it's literally only just passed being 3 years old.
    If you can provide any more help that would be appreciated, thank you!
