SSD for ASA 5515X

hi all,
we have an opportunity to sell cisco ASA 5515X firewall. and i have one doubt.
do i need to order SSD drive with ASA 5515-X with IPS?
Please note that i dont want to have CX software, i just want to enable the IPS software on the firewall.
and if i dont need it, where the IPS logs will be saved?
thanks in advance.

No SSD is required for IPS on the 5500X series. You do need to license the feature and order the device accordingly - e.g., ASA5515-IPS-K9 part number.
IPS event logs are stored locally on disk0 or optionally can be retrieved by a remote server such as Cisco Security Manager (CSM).

  • Upgrade from 8.2 to 8.6 for new ASA 5515X

    Hello,
My customer has a rather complex configuration on an ASA 5510 running version 8.2
They are migrating to new ASA 5515X models which of course only version support 8.6
How can i convert the configuration from 8.2 to 8.6 since the new ASA's do not support the earlier versions?
The X series seems to be a great option for new deployments but what about replacements of existing older models?
    Thanks for any ideas everyone!
    Chris

    Hello,
I would say go to 8.4 From there you will have the same syntax.
There will be new commands and features on 8.6... That for sure but you are going to be on the same path.
Any other question..Sure ..Just remember to rate all of the helpul posts

  • Remote Desktop Connection to ASA 5515x

    Hi Guys,
I have ASA 5515x and it has already Internet Connection since my firewall is not "production". So right now I'm trying to configure a Remote Session just for a test and eventually I was not able to connect from it. I followed the instructions from technotes but still Remote Connection dropped. Here's my sample configuration on my firewall, btw I also configured a service policy rule and ACL just to make sure if I can able to access the Server inside my network but Session also dropped.
Feel free if you guys have any inputs on my concern. Thanks a lot.
    nat (inside,outside) source static 1.1.1.1 2.2.2.1
    access-list 110 extended permit tcp host 3.3.3.1 host 2.2.2.1 eq 3389

The service-policy is not needed in this scenario. But your ACL has to use the real address of the internal server:
    access-list 110 extended permit tcp host 3.3.3.1 host 1.1.1.1 eq 3389
And is the ACL bound to the outside interface?
    access-group 110 in int outside

  • Adding SSD to ASA 5555X or 5525X - general questions

I am prep'ing two HA pairs of ASAs for FirePOWER. I have (hot) installed the SSDs (two in 5555X and one in 5525X) and did not see the SSDs in SHOW INVENTORY. Upon reading the instructions in the ASA hardware guide, it says that you must reload the ASA to recognize the SSD. I reloaded the non-active 5525X and the SSD still did not show up in SHOW INVENTORY.
    Questions:
    1) when you install the SSD, is the old non-SSD drive still active? (Yes, because the non-active ASA reloaded with no problem, but please verify)
The instructions say to "image" the SSD. My thought was that the FirePOWER image would be the only image I would put on the SSD and I would continue to use the non-SSD for other files like the ASA and ASDM images.
    2) Can you use both the non-SSD and SSD drives in a single ASA?
    3) Do I need to move the files from the non-SSD to the SSD? From the instructions, it seems both are referred to as DISK0: so I'm not sure how to reference both drives individually. How would I load the FirePOWER image onto the SSD if both non-SSD and SSD are referenced as Disk0:?
The SSDs lights are illuminated after the drives were installed.
    Thanks.

I do believe ASA 9.1(1) is required as a minimum. See the matrix in Table 3 in the ASA compatibility matrix.
Also the release notes for ASA 9.1 note under "New Features in ASA 9.1(1)" that they introduced support for the SSD-based CX SSP.
You have to move up to at least 9.2(2.4) for for FirePOWER Service module.

  • Cisco asa 5515x web user management

    hi all,
i bought recently a new asa 5515x, i'm also new to it especially if i can have user login to internet before they can use the internet.  my 5515 security license is a plus license.  and also if that user management can be integrated with active directory 2008 r2.
thanks for any comment you may add.

The ASA should be able to talk to your AD via either LDAP or Kerberos..
And yes, you need the CX to perform content filtering on the ASA itself, or you can look at the Ironport appliances or Cloud Web Security (scansafe) fir additional filtering options

  • Creating a 20MB bandwidth using two cisco asa 5515x with a hub (10/100/1000)

    hi all,
I would like to simulate a bandwidth of 20MB for my DR project testing on my two cisco asa 5515x and with a cisco hub (10/100/1000).  I was thinking to make two connections on my "outside" vlan with both speed of 10 and etherchannel it and do it again on the other asa.
Do you think it will simulate 20MB bandwidth?  Or any other suggestion?  Please add any comment, thanks to all.

    Hi Nicholas,
You have the HSRP running between your core devices. You can have your core A - ASA1 & Core-B - ASA2.
In your core switch you need to have a sepearate VLAN to connect the uplink to the firewall and asusual in asa you can have the primary and standby address configured and in core also you can have the vlan with hsrp ip configured.
But make sure that in your firewall you should mention the static routes for each subnets pointing to the core device hsrp.
The other scenario is you have make you ASA a standalone firewalls and in one firewall you need to have route to core a as primary and core b as secondary and in the other firewall vice versa. So that your traffic will get load balanced.
Please do rate if the given information helps.

  • ASA 5515x and web content filtering

    hi all
i tried adding a content rule on my asa 5515x, it say i don' t have one configured in configuration/firewall/url filtering.  when i got there, i need to configure either websense or smartfiler.  Are those free or I need to purchase that from those vendor?  My 5515x is security plus, is that included there?
does asa 5515x have it's own filtering without going to third party vendor?
thanks for any comment you may add.

As already mentioned, the MPF has the capability to filter on URLs. But that is quite limited and in my opinion not usable at all (unless you only have a couple of FQDNs to filter that don't change often). If you need more functionality and you want to stay on the ASA you could deploy ASA-CX. Otherwise you could deploy a dedicated proxy and force your users to use that proxy. That could be the best solution in your environment.

  • How do I use my SSD for apps and HDD for documents?

    Hi, everyone.
I just installed (myself) an Intel 120GB SSD into my 2011 iMac (3.4Ghz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD). I kept the HDD.
I run Logic Pro 9 and have around 200GB of additional sample plugins (VSL Solo Strings, Ivory Grand Pianos, Superior Drummer, etc..) and
I want to know how I can successfully transfer the Apps (Logic, Sibelius, Pages, iTunes, etc...) onto my new SSD while keeping the plugins on my HDD and using them simultaneously.
I having been searching for a way to do this all day to no avail.
    Thanks! If you can help.
p.s. since some of the apps require registration, I cannot simply drag them to my SSD from the HDD and expect them to work. I get an error.

My suggestion is to move you entire home directory on to the hdd and leave the ssd for the os and your key applications.

  • What is the best way to use a SSD for Photoshop/photo editing?

Computer hardware newbie here: I do a significant amount of photo editing work and for a very long time I've experienced Photoshop, Bridge and Photomatix crashing constantly (usually due to insufficient RAM) or just generally taking forever (Bridge took forever to load the thumbnail/preview extractions in a folder full of images, Photoshop took forever to save images and Photomatix took ages to load/merge a set of bracketed photos).  Here are the typical error messages I'd get: http://pastebin.com/J9byczse
As a professional photographer, constantly running into that sort of thing is quite aggravating, so to hopefully avoid ever having to deal with that again I invested in a new custom built computer.  It's Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 32GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD; I'm using the 240GB SSD as my boot drive/OS, all of my programs are installed there, and the page file.  My photos and data are stored on several HDDs.  I have yet to install any of my photo editing software (Photoshop CS6 Extended, Lightroom, Photomatix etc) to the new computer yet since I'd like some advice first.
My basic question is this: what is the best way to take advantage of the SSD (and the computer in general) when it comes to my photo editing software?
    Specifically...
    1. If I have a folder of photos I'm working on, should I move it to the SSD and then work on them from there in order to take advantage of the speed of the SSD?  Would this make any difference in terms of speed if the photos are located on the SSD vs. an internal/external HDD?
    2. Most of what I've read online seems to recommend two separate SSDs, one for installing/booting the apps and one for cache/scratch.  Does it matter if I use my 240GB SSD for both?
    3. This is a fairly new computer and the SSD is already almost half full (102GB used, 120GB free) *WITHOUT* any of my photo editing software installed yet.  I'm concerned about how fast that remaining 120 GB may fill up.  As it fills up will I lose the speed advantage of the SSD vs. a regular HDD?
    4. Sort of similar to #3, but should I bother moving any of my other non-photo editing programs/caches off of the SSD to a HDD and would there be any major difference in the speed/lifespan of the SSD if I did so?  It's mostly Firefox and Chrome and their caches that I'm concerned may be a problem if they remain on the SSD.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have an SSD you can run the cache and programs on the same drive.  However, many recommend a scratch disk size of 100-200 gigs so that will not work here unless you opt for a larger SSD.  Otherwise an internal spinner is recommended that does not contain the program files, or idealy any other files that may want to get acessed at same time (only one read/write head per drive).
With 32 gig of RAM you may not need the constant use of the scratch drive unless working on large images with lots of layers.  So see no advantage to moving folder to SSD for temp work environment.
From what I read the new crop of SSD do not have the wear problems of the older versions.

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

If you have the two allotted activations already and one was lost on the hard drive that failed then you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.

  • I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system.  Restored drive from backup.  Now logon password doesn't work.  Account password still works.  Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
    SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

  • Should I use a 16gb SSD for my /boot and / partitions?

Should I use a SSD for /boot and / partitions or just not even bother with one so small?
EDIT:  For the sake of another thread.  You think Arch would run just fine on a PIII 733mhz, 128mb RAM computer?  Grandmother gave it to me after she got herself a new one (one I built lol).

  • What's the best SSD for a Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010?

    Hello.
I will upgrade my 2010 Macbook Pro. I need to know what's the best SSD for my Macbook Pro. I was thinking about those:
    - Kingston SSDNow V+200 (SVP200S37A/120G) - 120 GB
    - CRUCIAL SSD M4 128 GB
    - CORSAIR SSD  Force Series GS 128 GB
    - SAMSUNG SSD 840 Series Basic 2.5" - 120 GB (MZ-7TD120BW)
    - CRUCIAL SSD interno Crucial v4 - 128 GB
Those are the easiest to find on Portugal.

It is my understanding that SATA III is backwards compatible to SATA II so that should not be an issue for your selection process.
As an aside, you might be interested to know that your MBP can now have 16 GB RAM installed.
