SSD for HP Envy 17 3d (new model)

I'm trying to find a suitable SSD for my new laptop. I read somewhere that I cannot boot from the new SSD...is that true? Something about the SSD not being the "primary drive". Does anyone reccommend a particular ssd that would work with my new laptop? Thanks.

You have two hard drive bays in the laptop.

You can use any SSD you can afford...just place it as the primary hard drive so it will be bootable.

  • Can I use a recovery disc on a new 120 GB SSD for HP Envy 17 that previously had 2 500GB RAID 0?

I currently have a HP Envy 17-2070NR.  I would like to install a new SSD (120 GB) to replace one of the 500 GB HD that are currently in the laptop (the 2 drives are set up RAID 0).
If I install the new drive and remove the two old ones can I use the recovery discs to reinstall windows/drivers/default programs?

The 500GB MyBook Pro should work fine. Just be sure to use a Firewire connection (not USB) to your Mac and format the drive as Mac OS Extended - Journaled. It will come from the factory as FAT32, so you'll need to reformat it. But wait - don't reformat it until you offload the ButtonManager, FW Driver and Retrospect software. You will need the first two to install your drive.
And that's one of the reasons I stay away from the MyBook drives - they were really designed for Windows systems, not Macs. For one, they have their own FireWire drivers and I see no reason to be required to install device-specific drivers on my Mac in order to use a consumer-grade hard drive. As far as I'm concerned, that's just bad design (or, perhaps design for systems other than Macs ...).
The 500GB Lacie Big Disk did get a bunch of bad reviews. However, the 500GB Lacie d2 Extreme is the same price and has much better reviews. The Lacie d2 Extreme drives are quite reliable; I have many and not one of them has failed me over the years. The 320GB d2 Extreme is currently $140 at newegg.com. See how that compares to the price of the MyBook.

  • Replace HDD with SSD for HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC

I'd like to buy a HP ENVY 15t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC and a HP v300a 120GB SATA Solid State Drive with Upgrade Kit.
Now the SSD has a 7mm thickness.
My question is if I can replace the HDD with this SSD? How thick is the HDD bay in the laptop.
If it's more than 7mm will the SSD move inside it?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
The old HDD on your machine is a bit thicker but with at least 4 screws I don't think new SSD will floating around in the case. I actually put new SSD in one of my laptop (not HP) and no problem BUT I don't move this laptop around. If needed, blue tac may help.

  • SSD for HP ENVY 17-j184nr

I am getting an HP ENVY 17-j184nr with the 1Tb HDD.  I would like to add an SSD and make it the master drive.  I have 3 questions:
    1. Can the HP ENVY 17-j184nr date a second drive and can it be an SSD?  I believe it can based on the compatibility report at crucial at http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=ENVY%2017-j181nr
    2. If it can take an SSD what size and any recommendations on what manufacturer would be best?
    3. As it is coming with Win 8 installed on the HDD I will have to switch to having the SSD as master and install Win 8 on it.  Any walkthroughs on how to do this?  I have not found any good resource for Win 8 and the HP ENVY 17-j184nr
As an extra upgrade question is there any significant difference between crucial memory and corsair?

    Hi,
    Q1: Yes
Q2: I don't think the newest laptops have any limitations so amost any SSD should work. Crucial, Corsair, Samsung or Intel are decents drives.
Q3: Samsung drives come with some cloning software for an easy OS transfer. Don't forget to disable the "Secure Boot" feature in the BIOS before you start the upgrade.
The Corsair module has a lower CL (10). Means it's faster. I would recommend Corsair modules anyway. Use them for a while and no troubles.

  • Ssd for hp envy m6 1105dx

Hi i was wondering if someone could please tellme how to install a ssd on a hp envy m6 1105dx laptop ive installed to different ssd in the computer and both havent worked.I tried using the recovery software that i bought from hp for this computer and both stop at the same point.I was wondering after reading if i have to get a full install copy of windows and install it that way

    Hi,
If you want to replace your current HDD with a SSD, you can do that however in that case you may need to reconfigure Raid for your mSATA and SSD drives. Raid configuration utility is not available for the PC, this has to be done at repair center of HP.
or just remove the mSATA and HDD drive from PC, install ssd and complete the recovery.
also, when you run the recovery without mSATA, you may need to change the date from BIOS to december 2012, complete the recovery and again change the date to current(if you do not make it back to current, ACtivation of windows 8 may fail).

  • OWC 120GB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD Solid State Drive Best SSD for a Mac?

ive read that OWC is the best for mac. Is this true. what is your recommendations for a SSD for an 08' Macbook

Yes. Your model has a SATA II bus that only supports up to 3 Gb/s drive interfaces. Thus, there is no point in spending more for a SATA III drive. If you expect you will soon want to move the SSD into a new model that does support the faster interface, then be sure the 6G model is downward compatible with the 3G bus. Most, but not all 6G SSDs are, so it's best to ask first.

  • Which SSD for x220

    Hi,
I'm planning on ordering an x220 pretty soon, but I'm not sure which one to pick. There's one at 128 GB that just says Solid state, and one at 160, from Intel. Now, how much difference is there (besides the 32 GB, obviously)?
Is it worth the extra money and more than 4 weeks shipping time?
    Thanks!

I've got x220 4290-CTO with Intel 320 Series SSD 120 Gb. It's the new model more fast and reliable then x-25 with 9,5 and 7 mm form factor (I've got the second one). The factory configuration of laptop was with Hitachi HDD which has been replaced by me. I've just transferred partitions, Windows system, applications and data using Intel Data Migration Software (based on Acronis sw) which works fine. Then I've tuned and optimized the SSD and system with Intel Toolbox as these operations are absolutelly needed. And NOTE - there aren't any POST delay issues in my laptop.
There are several guys at this forum who've fitted 9,5 mm disk w/o prolems they've claimed. As for me there is a little but solved problem with laptop case for fiiting 9,5 mm disk.
I guess the Factory Recovery disks can't build the new partitions clearly as the size of hdd and ssd is different. But I may be mistaken. For this reason I've used the special Intel sw.
I assume also that 160 Gb SSD, factory installed in new x220, isn't an Intel 320 Series as this disk is new and more cost expensive.
Why to wait 4 weeks and to pay expensive price while good result can be reached by yourself, faster and more cheaply?

  • Migrating a two ssd macbook pro to newer model (1ssd for system, 1ssd for user home folder)

I want to migrate / transfer the two fast SSDs I have now in an end 2008 macbook pro into a newer mid 2012 macbook pro that is empty and could not find any good instructions on how to do such a move. Both are running the latest version of Mavericks.
On one SSD (265 gig) is the system and applications and on the other 1TB SSD in the optical drive slot are the user accounts - except one safety user account with admin priviledges on the system SSD.
My understanding is that it is not recommended to just swap the system drive from the old macbook to the newer one since there might be complications with drivers etc building up.
My current guess for the best process is to
    1. migrate with migration assistant the system from the current SSD to the new slower spinning hard drive on the new macbook pro.
    2. swap the two (putting the SSD from the old one to the new macbook, starting in recovery mode and installing mavericks and migrating the migrated system back to the new macbook pro)
    3. put the 1TB user folder SSD into the optibay on the new macbook pro, create a new user account with the same name as the one used on the old macbook pro and it should find the user directory with the same name on the second harddrive, ask me if I want to use it and do so ...
Is this was the geniouses out here would recommend also?
My secondary problem is that I have already 5 computers associated to my apple ID and thus am wondering how I can do this transfer without running into problems caused by this - all hints and tips most welcome.

I have done what you suggested. However, I have to disagree with you about the 'third party' comment. Although those minor issues were on there which I picked up on shortly afterwards, they were easily removed. It hasn't CHANGED the symptoms I described about my mac. Both items are removed (growl only tends to make your mac 'lag' and that's not the problem I'm having)
I am still having all the above issues, regardless of my mac being fully minus third party items. This mac hasn't had any heavy use, or had many applications installed on it ect, there is really no reason for it to be failing. I'd understand if it was old, but it's literally only just passed being 3 years old.
If you can provide any more help that would be appreciated, thank you!

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the version of OS X that originally came with your model if you have a model that supports Internet Recovery - 2010 models and later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

You don't.  Apple's warranty provides for replacing your device with an identical model (same model, carrier, capacity & color).
And you aren't getting a new iPhone.  You'll be getting a remanufactured iPhone, which has gone through a more thorough inspection than any new iPhone ever does.
If you want a newer model, then trade-in or privately sell your current device and use the proceeds towards purchasing another device.

  • Is there a compatibility guide for SSDs in the late 2011 macbook pro model?

Is there a compatibility guide for SSDs in the late 2011 macbook pro model? I'm looking to purchase a 15.4" Late 2011 Macbook pro and was looking a SATA3 SSD that was supported (outside of the ones provided by Apple). Does anyone have any success stories they wish to share? I assume the problem with secondary bay and SATA3 has still not been resolved.

Have you looked at the OWC web site?  They specialize in Mac peripherals and they have a good line of SSDs and secondary bays as well.  My experience with them has been good but I am not ready for SSDs.  For my needs the cost/benefits are not there.
    Ciao.
