SSD for Media Cache and Preview files ...bad idea?

Hi guys!
Today I killed my 3rd SSD.I used both of them for store Media cache and preview files with Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5.
1st was OCZ Vertex 3 240GB than I replaced to a new one. After few weeks later the 2nd OCZ Vertex 3 dead.
And now Corsair Force 3 is gone.I dont worry because all of them still in warranty period, and I havebackup from my projects.
Just asking maybe these SSD-s is not stable for this thing? I mean often write and read datas?
Maybe better to replace to a simple HDD (maybe 10000rpm)?
Or just I was that lucky guy who catch 3 defected ssd-s in the last six months..:-(

No, I don't think that you killed them; the OCZ Vertex 3 series, and many other SSDs using the same Sandforce controller, are having way too many issues where Adobe is not being used at all.
Do check your firmware on these drives too; there have been lots of updates trying to make these seemingly seriously flawed drives work more reliably.

Jim

  • Movie lost, cache and preview files

I am in a bad situation. I created some  movies of personal memories with premierePro and the medium they were on died. All i have left is the cache/preview (is there a difference between them?)files. Is there any way that i can use them to retrieve the videos..or is there even a player for them???

If you can spin up your dead HDD, maybe a recovery program, like Stellar-Phoenix, can recover your data. I've used it a few times, and it has been a real life-saver (or file-saver, as the case may be).
    Good luck,

  • What Size Drive for Media Cache?

    Hi there,
I'm about to edit a large project (5TB of 4K RED footage and counting) on a laptop and am intending to use the setup below for disks. Ideally I would have gone for a "4 disk" setup, but I've maxed out my eSATA connections and would have to use USB for anything else. If coincidentally you can see any problems with this configuration please let me know!
    Disk Setup
    C Drive 750GB (OS, Programs)
3x 2TB Drives in eSATA docking stations (Media, Projects)
Second internal hard disk (Previews, Media Cache, Exports)
I'm intending to install a second hard drive in my laptop to use for the  Media Cache. What size/speed drive should be used for this purpose?
    Thanks!

Perhaps only that the predominant holy grail on this forum is achieving a high PPBM score, not necessarily edit 4K.
I've worked with 2K and 4K files on very slow machines, and I am not an editor - a systems integrator.  It's being done.
Personally, I wouldn't dedicate a disk or a volume to media cache and DB - I believe that money is better spent on the main media volume's speed and capacity.  People who have done it on modern (not old) systems haven't reported much of a performance boost.  But if you find otherwise, I'd love to hear about it.
In your case, since you don't seem to plan to have a relatively fast main media volume (e.g. an eSATA RAID0), a separate drive for media caching and database may have a performance benefit.  The size of it depends on the size of your projects, how complex your project and timelines are, how much rendering they require.  Usually even a small disk (under 100GB) will do just fine for the purpose; the current "sweet spot" is around 256GB SSD and 500-750GB 7200rpm mechanical drive.

  • Whre does oracle cache and temp files are located?

    Hi
thank you for reading my post
Please do not shoot me if i have misconception.
I come from netbeans world and for netbeans there was some folder that we could delete to make netbeans cache fresh (so more speed).
for Jdeveloper i can not find such folder and its some times that Jdev works really slow.
once i delete the system directory and all my settings gone with that (specially server that i registered / database connection /libaries)
    what should i delete to
-keep all registered server / librarye/database connections
-make Oracle Jdeveloper to work like a new installation.
    thanks

If you wish to exclude anything from the backup simply drag the item into the Exclude list. For example, you can save considerable space by excluding the /System/ folder. Cache files would be found in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ folders. Each folder contains a folder named Caches. There is no specific folder in which temporary items as stored that is visible to the user because the operating system will usually delete temporary files on its own. This may not be the case for a specific program, however. Browsers may maintain their own reserved cache and temporary files, and manage them on their own.
I do not think, however, that TM backs up caches or temporary files. I find no such items in my TM backup - only the folders. I do not back up my /System/ folder.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the version of OS X that originally came with your model if you have a model that supports Internet Recovery - 2010 models and later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.

  • Time machine backups cache and temp files?

Just bought a new external usb disk and used it as the time machine backup volume. All time machine configurations are remained as default, so it would backup all my current HD. While watching it estimating the time that the first backup would take, a question jump out in my mind:
Will time machine backup all files "honestly"? Will it make a copy of every file including the Internet cache and temp files when I'm browsing websites? I'm used to watch youtube a lot, and the temp flv file would be large (though I don't know where it is stored on Leopard). If these files would be backup-ed as well, I think it would be a great waste of disk space.
Can anyone confirm that those caches and temp files would be copied or not? If it would, how to prevent this? Thank you.

If you wish to exclude anything from the backup simply drag the item into the Exclude list. For example, you can save considerable space by excluding the /System/ folder. • Can I enable pof serialization for one cache and other JAVA serialization

you can control serialization on a service-by-service basis. You can specify which serializer to use for the service with the <serializer> element in the service-scheme element corresponding to the service in the scache configuration file.
Be aware, though, that if you use Coherence*Extend, and the service serializer configuration for the proxy service does not match the serializer configuration of the service which you are proxying to the extend client then the proxy node has to de- and reserialize the data which it moves between the service and the client.

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

why can't I print a pdf file, it's asking for a password and I have no idea what it is it never asked for one before?

Good afternoon SaraThanks for responding. Yes, I have been able to open these files before without a password. Funny thing is it is happening on both my husband's laptop as well as mine. I'd appreciate any help you could give me but the file is very personal. So, if you can assist in a way that won't compromise the security I would be grateful for your help. Thanks and have a great day!Kim Morse

  • Using Sym Links for .dbf, .log, and .ctl files?  Will this work in 10g?

    Hello,
We have an old database server we use for testing/development and it's running very low on diskspace on one of the filesystems on the box. At this point in time, adding space is not a simple option for several reasons. However, there are several other data partitions on this server with plenty of space available.
I read a paper published by Sun Microsystems that advocates the use of symbolic links for dbf, ctl, and log files:
    http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0103/817-1048.pdf
Are there any drawbacks/caveats we need to be aware of, or is this really as simple as just stopping the db, moving a few files to another fs, symlinking their locations, and restarting the db?
    Thanks for your input/advice.

I think you should verify this with Oracle Support.
This is the perfect measure to have them drop the phone on you.
