SSD in a H210? Is the HDD Controller SSD aware

Hi, I have a 5 year old LNV300 H210 E5200. Can anyone tell how I know if te HDD controller knows SSD's and if I can upgrade the controller so that it is SSD aware? My options are to put and SSD in the current machine, live with the old slow PC I have now, or buy a new one.I know it doesn't pay to put a SSD in a machine if the controller deosn't recognize SSD's I just don't knwo how to get that info about the controller. Thanks in Advance.

hI DavidBNYC,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Yes. The SSD's are backward compatible even up to the old Sata I 3gbps.
Here's one site that promote the drive ans an example
Holpe this helps

Yes the dv9700 is SATA-II compliant for the hard drives.

  • Tecra A50 PT634E - Need details about the SATA controller

    Hi
I'm looking for detailed specification of Toshiba Tecra A50 (PT634E-00800JPL).
I need to know what is the version of internal SATA port.
Is this SATA II or SATA III ?
I want to change the hard disk to SSD and buy the most suitable one.

Install freeware hardware diagnostic software like for example SANDRA Sisoft, Everest Home Edit or HWiNFO32.
Such tools provide you all essential information about the built in parts and the HDD controller.
Please post some feedback would be interesting to know what SATA controller details would be reported by such tool.

  • KT3 Ultra 2 (MS6380E) - Not booting, D-bracket indicates problem HDD controller

I wonder if anyone could help me. Just yesterday my whole PC (4 1/2 years old) crashed suddenly (black screen, HDD spinning down) I tried to reboot it but to no avail. My D-Bracket indicators are as follows: upper two red, lower two green, which is during the initialisation of the HDD controller. I have already tried to boot it with the bare minimum but the problem persists. When i press the power button i hear all fans in the case spinning and the HDD spinning up but there are no beeps from BIOS and the screen remains blank (can't acces BIOS either). There are also some clicks coming from the DVD-ROM drive (reading light goes on and out) for about 5 seconds and then the clicking stops. I have already tried reseating and/or replacing with other models: PSU, memory , videocard, HDD and clearing CMOS both by using JBAT jumper and removing the battery for half an hour. Does anyone know other things to try? Thank you for replying.
    KT3 Ultra 2
    Athlon XP 2000+ FSB133
    512 mb DDR333
    400W PSU

    Thank you for the replies.
Regarding the CPU fan (Zahlman), everything is working fine, never had any problems with it, no thermal issues with CPU at all.
The D-Bracket indicators do not flash during boot but immediately illuminate top two red, lower two green. Shouldn't all four indicators be red to indicate a CPU failure (according to my manual) ?
The clicking of the DVD-ROM drive also has me worried as it seems to indicate something's wrong with the IDE controller, but I could be wrong. Something I also noticed is that when i boot the PC with HDD but without DVD-ROM drive the HDD activity LED stays illuminated all the time, but when I connect both the DVD-ROM clicks and the HDD LED goes off after three seconds. I tried another DVD-ROM drive and the clicking stays. I don't know if this is significant for troubleshooting this problem.
Will disconnect all components again as suggested and leave the mainboard without battery overnight. Should i also set the JBAT jumper to clear data during the night? I think i will unscrew the mainboard as well (but leave CPU on it) and build the PC up from scratch.

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • (Mac Mini mid-2011) Installing an SSD drive as a replacement of the HDD

    Hey all,
I just got myself a Crucial M500 240GB SSD drive for my mid-2011 Mac Mini. I intend to replace the standard hard drive with this one.
Here are a couple of thigs that are still unclear to me :
    - what will happen when I first boot my Mini after I replaced the HDD with the SSD ? As of now, this drive is in stock state, I guess not even formatted and empty.
    - how will I be able to make a fresh install of Mavericks ? I made a bootable Mavericks install usb stick, but haven't found out a way yet to boot on it (I have a wireless Apple keyboard, and holding the cmd key when booting won't pop any disk manager)
Any further details on how I should proceed are appreciated, thanks !

    Hi,
First off, thanks for taking the time to answer.

You have to hold the Alt key while your computer is starting up in order to show all bootable partitions, so you will be able to choose the OS X Mavericks installer flash drive.
Then, format the SSD with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
In case you want to clone your HDD to the SSD, you can use the Restore feature in Disk Utility to do it. Get a USB to SATA adapter, connect the HDD and follow these steps with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html Choose your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination". When you have finished, restart and disconnect your HDD.
Just so you know, what I'm trying to do is a fresh install of Mavericks, from scratch. I do not want to clone the install I'm running know on my standard HD.
I tried to use several keyboard combinason without any luck. I Googled that and found out that this is normal behaviour on a Mac with a wireless keyboard. How am I supposed to get into recovery mode then ?
    Thanks !

  • How can I install only OS on SSD and have the HDD only for apps?

I am looking to buy an SSD and install it in my CD area of the macbook pro with an adapter. But I wanted to know if it's possible to instal only my OS on the SSD and have the HDD only for Apps/Software....Is this possible and if so how can I do this?

I suppose you could do this by just installing Mountain Lion onto your SSD, and then move your applications folder and documents to the HDD.
But I would be wary of doing this because:
It seems like it would defeat the purpose of having a SSD, that is to make your computer fast. The computer would have to switch back and forth between the SSD and the HDD. Sounds like that would unnecessarily complicate things.
I like to keep things simple. I think the software engineers at Apple know what they are doing and I just keep things installed simply and the way they intend them. Then they seem to work. I put a SSD in my laptop about a year ago and it works perfectly. I haven't had a problem with my computer in a very, very long time.
This doesn't mean that you can't have a lot of files stored on a secondary drive somewhere, whether it is on an internal or external drive. But I'd keep the system software and apps where they belong, on the drive where the installer puts them.
And this doesn't mean that you can't try your plan and see how it works.

  • What the best way to go about replacing the HDD in u410 with an SSD

I've just been given a U410 for Christmas.  My initial experience with the pc, bearing in mind that I've only had a it a few hours, is that it appears to be quite a good little laptop.  Then again compared to my previous laptops it wouldn't take a lot to beat them.
Anyway what I would like to do is replace the standard 500gb HDD which came with the laptop, with a spare 240gb SSD that I acquired earlier in the year, while keeping the contents / os from the original drive.
My initial plan was to clone the drive to the ssd and then just swap them out.  However this was not to be, as Acronis is not picking up the HDD and Clonezila will not complete the process as the drives are of different sizes.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tackle what I initially thought was going to be a relatively simple process.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I hadnt found this but sucessfully completed it with the todo backup utility and a few manual changes. I suppose you could also use the EasyGiG that comes with Cruicial SSD drives for cloning. (I chose a 250GB Cruicial M4)
See this posting for a great description of those partitions:  Making Sense of drive partitions
    Here's what I did.
    1. First I copied the filed formt he 20GB partition that held all of 1 GB of data over to the WIndows partition, this is a stupid partition that only holds drivers.
    2. I removed the stupid partition in the windows disk manager and expanded the Windows partition to use that data as well. You can do this after the clone as well but I didnt want the clone to create that partition.
    3. I cloned the the SATA drive to the SSD drive using Todo Backup, it was very quick... Under 1/2 hour.
    4. After cloning, the partitions on the SSD did not have the same attributes as the SATA drive did, which caused it to not be able to boot. The windows diskpart utility is your friend here.
    5. open a command prompt and run: diskpart (i actually used 2 command prompts side by side for easy reference)
type 'list disk' to show your disks, 'select disk' to give focus to a disk, for mine disk 2 was the SATA drive and disk 3 was the SSD.
type 'list partition' -> 'select partition' to change which partition you are working on (there are 6 or 7) on the SATA.
type 'detail partition' to get the details of the partition you are working on.
    6. Now heres how you make the changes, be sure to only make changes on the SSD at this point as the changes are immediate and could cause you problems if you modify the SATA drive you are running from.
get the details of each SATA partition and look for the line called ''Type". You need to note the string next to it that looks like: de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
on the corresponding SSD partition you need to change that value to mathc the SATA value by using the command: set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac (or whatever it was on the source partition)
verify the change with "detail partition" and "list partition",  rinse and repeat for each partition
    7. Now swap the HDD's and for me it booted immediately, and significantly faster performance all around. A worthwhile upgrade, even considering the drive space you sacrifice. ( get an external or a NAS to store your big files )
Good luck, no warranty on this procedure, it worked for me, YMMV.

  • Replacing the hdd to a ssd.

I would like to know if the action of replacing the hdd will void the warranty, and also which is the size of the hdd?

    Hi:
There should be no problem with the warranty as long as you don't break something trying to install the HDD.
HP will not support the SSD however and your recovery disks won't work because the new drive will need to be the same size as the 500 GB HDD you removed.
I have a workaround for the recovery disk issue...
According to your PC's system specs it came with W7 Home Premium 64 bit.
It has to be the English, French or Spanish version too.
If so, download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file at the link below.
Burn the file to a disk using a DVD burning program that can burn ISO files so the DVD is bootable.
Burn at the slowest speed you can.
Then use the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook to activate the installation.
Visit your notebook's support and driver page to install any drivers you need.

  • Can I replace the HDD in my Satellite C70D-B -00P model with an SSD?

    Hi
My question is in the subject line. If anyone has done this I would appreciate some tips.
    regards Stuart

Generally speaking yes, you can do this but problem is that your notebook model doesn't have HDD cover at the bottom side.
To have full access to the HDD the bottom cover must be removed completely but it should be done by authorized service only.
Of course you can try to do it alone but Im afraid you may lose the warranty.
If possible contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country, explain the situation and ask for help.

  • What is the latest model of MBP I can swap out the HDD on?

My late-2011 MBP is finally dying – I think the graphics card has come loose. Currently I have it working by forcing it to use integrated graphics only (as soon as I switch to dynamic the screen gets totally garbled and it eventually freezes up). Obviously not a permanent fix.
So I need to swap it out in the next couple of days. I figure I may as well upgrade to a newer version, if my budget can handle it.
Currently I have a ~1TB SSD in my computer. Ideally I'd like to just yank it from this computer and swap it into my replacement laptop. I know some of the newer ones make it difficult to switch out the HDD (and I'm not sure I can just use any SSD even in that case?). I'm wondering what the latest version of a 15" MBP is that I can just switch out the existing HDD for my SSD.
Ideally I'd have two ports for monitors, since I currently use a ridiculous contraption to use my two external monitors. But if that's not possible, the HDD swapability is more important.
Thank you all so much for your help!

Yup, non of the ones there will have the old SATA drive. Only the 13"
    There is a Retina 15" there w/ 1 TB:

The disadvantage there would be the lack of 3 years of AppleCare.

  • Windows 7 and HDD controller drivers

I need a compatiable HDD controler driver for windows 7 for a  Slimline s3500F.  When I try to run a clean install on those desktops, windows 7 can not find a HDD to install on.  This is not an upgrade.  The drives have been formated in the windows 7 cmd term so nothing is on the disks.  I just need a HDD controller driver.
I have already tried expanding the nForce 430/6150se chipset driver from nVidia's site (32bit Vista/win7 ed.), but none of the sata drivers in the archive are compatible with my hardware according to the Win7 install app.  If the Slimline s3500f does not use the nForce 430/6150se chipset, what does it use?  Getting any information for this computer seems to be difficult. On a personal note from myself and the company I work for, If we can't get any concrete answers to these questions I will be forced to upgrade our office PCs because the Slimline s3500F pc doesn't currently have an OS on them which is clearly unaccaptable.  If I am forced to upgrade, my company will never by HP again, this lack of clear documentation is appalling.
    Extra information if it's helpful.
A recent office move has resulted in the loss of our s3500F restore CDs.  Since we never purchased a copy of vista, and because XP seems to be impossible to install on them (errors after the xp pro Install coppied files to the HD & restarted), and because both IT and admin refuse to buy a real copy of vista, our only option right now is to get win7 on these PCs A.S.A.P.  We are using the 7227 Ultimate RC until Win7 goes for sale at retail.  However, as I've already said if we can't get our s3500F PCs online we will be upgrading our office equipment, (most likely canidate is Dell due to superior documentation).  I don't care about GFX, sound, or even card reader drivers.  I just need the Disk controler so we can get a base OS on them.  As long as they are operational we can wait for extra drivers.

Assuming you have a genuine "Full License" version of Windows 7, open the motherboard BIOS and change the DVD drive to the first bootable drive and the Hard Drive as the second bootable drive.  Insert the Windows DVD in the DVD drive, save your new BIOS settings and upon restart you should be able to boot with the Windows 7 DVD.  When the setup menu appears, select the option to delete any existing partitions, then create a new partition and proceed to install Windows 7.
I appreciate the reply but did you even read my post?  The problem isn't that I can't boot the windows 7 install DVD, the problem is that I can't get the Windows 7 installer to see my hard drive.
    For clarification puposes:
I can boot off the windows 7 DVD
The DVD rom in all of the s3500F systems is the primary boot device.
There are no partitions to delete in the Win 7 setup screen because it can't detect any supported hardware to install on.
This is a Driver issue - not a bios issue.
I have been able to determine from multiple websites now that the chipset in the s3500F is a nForce 430/6150SE.  The current revision (nVidia-15.49) of the driver with windows 7 support does not work.  I am currently in the process of trying older version of the nForce 430/6150SE to see which version of the SATAide driver will work with the s3500F in windows 7 ultimate.

  • T61, OCZ Agility 3 doesn't fit in the HDD cage

    Hi all
So, I finally bought myself an SSD for my old ThinkPad. Works wonderfully - except that it doesn't fit quite right.
The OCZ Agility 3 is slightly too wide for the HDD cage, on the bottom of the drive. Recall that the drive sits bottom side up in the ThinkPad, and that the cage sits on that side. My drive doesn't fit that way, however it does fit beautifully with the HDD cage turned upside down (obviously you can't screw the drive to the cage this way, but that is not a problem)
Now for my question: there is two metal tongues in the top of the HDD compartment, that I'm quite sure should be in contact with the HDD cage - which they now are not. Is my drive now not electrically shielded the way it should be, or what is the purpose of these?
I could cut some plastic off from the drive and make it fit the right way, but I'm pretty sure that would void the warranty of the drive, something I don't want to do. The ThinkPad on the other hand, is long out of warranty. Answers, information and suggestions is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely /O8h7w

That is strange that the drive is wider than a normal drive!
You don't really need the cage. You can get away with just sliding on the rubber boots, and put a piece of wide tape folded over on the drive so that you can pull it out if needed.
    Enjoy the SSD!
