SSD in old MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3) - worry about NVIDIA controller issue?

Hi!
I have the old MacbookPro5,3 - (Core2Duo 2,66 GHz with 8GB RAM), so a SSD would really make it go for another year og two. I do realize that I will not benefit of the full speed of the SSD because the machines max speed is SATA2/3GB/s: That's no problem - but I really can't be bothered with any problems like not be able to use it properly or the "slow" 1,5 GB/s-problem that some people have reported..
As fas as I can read this problem orginated from the NVIDIA controller (AHCI).
So my questions are:
- Have this problem been fixed, e.g. by driver upgrades from Apple or something else?
- Do all never SSDs have this problem fixed, or is it still an issue?
- Should I look at some specific drives or brands to avoid this spefic problem with compability with the NVIDIA controller..?
I'm looking at Samsung 840 256GB or Intel 530 180GB.. If the problem is specific to some drives and you would mind giving me some advice in that case..?

I have the same machine and installed a TOSHIBA THNSNC512GBSJ (from system report) and was amazed at the improvement in speed. Added a good two years of life to my MBP. Apparently this wasn't the fastest drive, but I valued the improvement in booting times and application start up. I got it from OWC on sale at the time so it was an excellent price too.

I've bought a new macbook pro 13" 2012 to replace my old macbook pro 2010.
In my old macbook pro 2010 I was using an Sandisk 480 SSD that has everything working and installed, as I sold the old one, I put my hard drive and format it to sell to my friend.
In the new macbook 2012, I soon I receive it, I replace the HDD with my old SSD an everything works normally except some problems that I'm discovering now!
MY new macbook boot without no problems and until now every software that I've testes is working ok! Some of them ask me to register again but all of them is working.
My problems starts with my VPN configuration, the new macbook looses all my VPN connections, but as it wasn't so much (only 6) I'm reconfiguring them as I need it.
My worst problem is happening with time machine backup. When I start my mac with the tima machine disk, it ask me if I want to inherit the old backups and I click to accept it, but the systems spends a lot of time searching for the time machine disk and them shows an error telling that is impossible to write on the disk.
I've checked the disk in disk utility and it's mounted as read/write. But I've tried to create a new directory on the disk and receive an error of operation denied!
What or where should I look to solve this problem?? Thanks!

You can resolve that by installing the 10.6.6 Combo Updater instead of the smaller incremental updater.

with your cc apps you should try to use the sync feature. that's never worked consistently for me, but when it does work, it's helpful.
there are preference folders and presets and settings that you could copy but you're better off installing fresh because a common problem for people with adobe program issues is a settings issue.

Old MacBook Pro slow and hangs frequently, hard drive problems?

I have an old Macbook Pro (one of the originals, from about 4 1/2 years ago). Recently I've been noticing that it runs really slow, especially when its been running for a while and there are multiple programs open. It will take a long time to switch between windows, opening a tab in Safari will usually cause a spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds and Safari crashes frequently. Other programs have similar problems, but don't normally crash. It's running Snow Leopard and has 1GB of RAM. Obviously I expect it to be slower with lots of stuff open, but my usage patterns haven't changed and its performance certainly has. The harddrive always seems to be being accessed when I have these problems.
The hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified," and I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came out fine. But I'm still really worried that something could be going wrong, especially with the hard drive and since I am going away in a few weeks to work on a project and will be away from my backup drive I really want to make sure any problem is taken care of beforehand.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the the problem or about anything I should try?

With lots of concurrent processes and insufficient memory you will experience slow performance and beachballing. This is because the OS is forced to use the hard drive to replace the non-existent physical RAM. See the following:

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Also, a small hard drive with too little free space and a system lacking in any regular maintenance can also lead to slow performance. See the following:

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

This should give you a few things to start sorting things out and getting better performance from your computer within its limitations.
If you have a Core Duo model then 2 GBs is the maximum RAM you can install. If you have a Core 2 Duo model then you can install up to 4 GBs but they system will only make use of 3 GBs. As for the hard drive it can be replaced. Notebook drives in the 250 to 500 GB - 7200 RPM range are relatively inexpensive. Visit OWC for pricing on drives and RAM. If I buy a new MacBook Air will the Apple Store help me transfer everything from my old MacBook Pro?

Will Apple help to copy over all the settings, apps, programs, files, etc. from an old MacBook Pro 15" on OS X 10.6.8 to a new MacBook Air 15"? Will it work easily and painlessly? Will they help me set it back to factory once everything is copied so that it can be sold or given to someone else? Will they charge for this?

This is really disappointing. Buy a $3,000 computer from them and then buy another one for $1,000+ and all they want to do is screw you over, nickle and dime you and price gouge you on setting it up.

[Solved] Beachballs on late 2008 15" MacBook Pro MacBookPro5,1 with SATA II HD

Each time I upgraded hard disks in my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro ( MacBookPro5,1 ) I experienced increasing beachballs. The worst was my recent upgrade to a Seagate 1TB SSD hybrid drive.
I had lived with this pain for years and it appears a simple jumper change could have solved it. In my opinion all or at least some models of the late 2008 MacBook 15" Pros do not reliably support SATA II 3 Gbit/second.

From what I uderstand my late 2008 MacBook Pro was designed to support SATA II 3 Gbit/second with it's Nvidia chip set. In fact every model from late 2008 appears to have support for SATA II.
Then in early 2011 they added support for SATA III 6 Gbit/sec which the 1TB ST1000LM014 hybrid drive also supports. ( Hopefully they got SATA III right in their first 2011 model year. ) Unfortunately for me I do not think they got SATA II right in their first late 2008 model year.

Hi Mike,
I am not sure it is same issue if drive is not even recognized. But I would not give up hope. I know my late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 has this problem even though it was designed to work at SATA II 3 Gbit/second. It may be possible that your 2009 model has a similar issue.
If the jumper works for you, then please cut and paste your MacBook's Hardware Overview. It would be nice to see the Serial-ATA hardware too. Go to:

Semi-experienced user - Western New York.
System was operating nominally until I opened it from 'sleep' mode after ~1 hour of inactivity.
No idea what's going on. I had just installed a Flash Player update [not an atypical occurrence] at ~6:00 PM this evening, but used the system without incident after that. Re-Start attempt does not appear to succeed, the circular pre-OS icon never clears and displays the authorization screen.
Anyone with an idea how to help would be greatly appreciated. We have so much personal and business data on this machine!!!

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.
The fact that you're worried about the data implies that you have no backups, or that you don't have confidence in your backups. Your first priority must be to back up all the data you intend to keep. Ask if you need guidance.

SSD on old Macbook 3,1

Hello,
I have an old Blackbook Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHZ (3,1) with 4GB of Ram, still with the original 160GB HDD. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
It has definitely slowed down and I am not looking to by a new one it any time soon. So I am considering replacing the old HDD with a new SSD to buy me a little more time. I am obviously not looking for super-performance, just improvement. However, I am not sure what SSD I should purchase.
From what I have read, my Macbook will only work at 1.5Gbps. Most options out there right now are SATA II (3Gbps) and SATA III (6Gbps). Though I know they are both overkill for my current machine, I am wondering if it would be smarter to get the SATA III in order to future proof a little bit. When I finally do upgrade my laptop, I could transfer the SSD to the new machine.
So here are my questions:
1) In the future, would I be able to use the SSD as an external drive, in case I can't put it in the next computer?
2) Would it be smarter to save the money and get a SATA II now and not worry about what I will do with the drive down the line?
3) I am hoping to spend around $100 for ~128GB SSD. What are good SSD options for an older Macbook (Crucial v4/m4, OCZ, OWC, Kingston, Samsung)?
4) I saw a Samsung 830 128GB on sale for $100. Is this over-kill for my set-up? Would it work? I read somewhere they are actually smaller drives. Would they even fit in the older Macbook?
5) What are the key terms/features should I know when making this decision? People talk about the connectors and some causing problems with Macbooks. Others mention firmware updates. I just want to make sure I don't jump on a seemingly good deal and then find out there is a well-known issue.

Sorry for never updating this post.
I ended up buying a Crucial m4 128GB SSD that I scored for $80. It has been great in my older MacBook. I had some issues when it acted slow or hung when it was full, so I deleted some files and followed some instructions from crucial to leave my computer in a log in stage for a day so that it could clean itself up. After that, everything has been great. I keep it with about 25-30gb free just to avoid any other complications.
I know that I don't benefit from the fastest speeds, but it has been amazing to see the difference. It is hard to imagine what it would be like if I did have SATA III! There is no way I am ever going back to hdd.
Actually, my work just got my the latest MacBook Air with a 256gb ssd and I actually find it to be slower than my old MacBook. Startup times are about the same, but shut down is way faster on the older laptop. Supposedly there is an issues with mountain lion, so I hope an OS update fixes that. There is no reason shutdown should take over 30 seconds on a brand new MacBook Air when it take 7-8 seconds on my old MacBook.
I conclusion, I am happy with my crucial m4. There seems to be a new generation of ssd that would be interesting if I were doing an upgrade now. The Samsung 840 looks great, though I am sure finding a cheap 830 would be a great call. Anyone looking to do this now has a lot of great options and should definitely not spend more than $100 for an excellent 128gb ssd. Though spending an additional $50 for double the space might be worth it. For me, being able to connect external hdd by USB 3.0 to the Air makes up for any space issues. My old laptop is another story, but I have no complaints using USB 2.0 with a 2tb drive at home.

I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

How do I transfer files from my old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro?

I am trying to transfer some files, not all, from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, but it doesn't let me choose what I want to transfer (only generic things like "users" and "files and folders"). I have tried to use Firewire. Now here is the funny thing. When I put my old mac in target mode it doesn't appear on my new mac anywhere. But, when I put my new mac in target mode, it pops right up on the dashboard and in finder. The problem is I have tried using my new mac as the target and just place the files into the icon, but the don't stay after I eject. I get a prompt that says downloading and when all files and apps are transferred I turn off my new mac then turn it back on and nothing. I've done search after search and repeated this process 3 times and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Time Machine will not "overwrite". New back ups are added to what is there, without erasing.
Connect the Time Machine back up, double click on the icon and navigate through its contents - the back ups are chronological, so you just select the date then go through the contents just like on any other drive. You can select any files you want and drag and drop on the new Mac's desktop (or anywhere else).

I agree with the optical drive, mine acted strange, and i thought people were crazy and my drive was shot, but a simple cleaning disc worked miracles.
But- are you trying to reboot with both the USB install and the DVD install both plugged in? that would definitely cause confusion.
Do this, reboot with NOTHING plugged in. Once you hear the Mac chime, immediately press and hold option.
You should only see the Mac HD, and Recovery Partition.
THEN plug in your external DVD, and wait a min or two, you should see a disc icon appear next to the recovery partition that says something like windows. If that doesnt appear after a min or two, unplug it and put the USB stick and do the same thing. I had to do it this way on my mid 09 MBP.
Let me know if this works to start the install. If not we may have to start over with Bootcamp Assistant

How can I connect an old macbook pro with that does NOT have a Thunderbolt connection to a new 27 inch iMac? I only need to do this for one specific purpose, to be able to see the work I'm doing on the laptop in InDesign on the iMac's larger screen (at a larger size as it were, so I can see a double page spread (or even a whole page would be an improvement) in one go)? I gather it might be possible to get an adaptor but note that Apple don't seem to sell one. I know I could do this with the cinema screen but would rather do it with a new imac as that will have more use to me overall. It's a work laptop which I don't own so I don't own the Indesign to just be able to use that on an iMac. I have tried to connect monitors to the laptop in the past, but with no success at all. I hope someone can help . Thank you.

Im pretty sure you are talking about the M8536 which has an ADC Adapter.
you will have to daisy chain a thunderbolt to DVI adapter with an DVI to ADC Adapter.

I have had to "re-instate" "Mail" on my 5yr old Macbook Pro after it got "lost"during an s/w upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6.8. In reinstated version all my Email archive folders are now missing from the screen. How/where do I find them ??

I recently purchased Snow Leopard v10.6.3 in order to upgrade the OSX platform on my 5 year old Macbook Pro. That loaded without trouble. Then I needed to do an online upgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 (via 10.6.4) and there the trouble commenced !! Somewhere along the way, the "Mail" application simply disappeared! On advice from Apple telephone support, I did a "selective" reinstall of "Mail" from the Snow Leopard disk, but the version of Mail it loaded (v4.5) was wrong for use with OSX v10.6.8 and so it kept asking for the 'latest" version (v4.6) and just would not work. I tried a "Fix" download provided on the Apple site, that didn't work.
I spent 2 hours at the Genius Bar of my local Apple Store and they finally found a fix, after some difficulty. Apparently there had been a programming error somewhere in one of the Apple update downloads.
So now I have "Mail" back - but the Mailbox folders now not as they were before - particularly they do not contain my archive Folders that I had been using to store certain historic emails.
I think the folder structure on "Mail" is now identical to that on my "BT Yahoo" screen - whereas before they had been different. My local Apple Store told me that it was practice now to synchronise the "Mail" screen and (for example) the BT Yahoo screen to be identical. This is well and good going forward - but does not help me with access to my historic "email filing system" !!
Anyone help me find those missing folders ?? They must be stored somewhere, but where ??!!

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.
