SSD Install on GT70 20C-408US

I've looked everywhere and can't find info on what I can and can't do with HDD and SSD.   The GT70 20C-408US comes with a 1TB 7200 rpm HDD.  This is the limiting factor for games.  I'm trying to determine if I can install an additional SSD to support games, or if I can only support one drive.
Thank you for any assistance!

Just bought my GT70 2Oc-408US the other day; called MSI technical support, asked them about replacing the HDD with a SSD and if it would void any warranty. The Agent for MSI assured me that the Warranty would stay intact, and then directed me to a MSI website which had instructional videos on replacing the HDD.  Watched the video, replacement instructions were straight forward. I had pre-ghosted the SSD, so the replacement went very smooth.
Ran the Windows Experience Index [Windows 7 OS], came up as 7.7; I am happy!!!

  • MSI GT70 20C WIN 8.1 UPGRADE ISSUES!!!!

Hello everyone  A bit of a quagmire here.  I have a new MSI GT70 20C.  It is an awesome gaming machine to say the least.  I decided to choose the best of two evils and decided to upgrade to WIN 8.1.....
    Here is the issue:
    1:Uninstalled the old Killer E2200 LAN/WLAN/BT 4.0 Drivers.
2:Installed the new Drivers provided by MSI and all work except LAN.
3:Uninstalled everything and tried again but this time noticed that when device manager is open and installing the driver pack, the device manager refreshed about 10 times or so and it is all fine until after the program says to reboot then the LAN is not working again.  I proceeded to uninstall and re-install this time to cancel the install as I realized that there is something in the driver pack that is conflicting with windows during the install process. I restarted the system and now it all works.
This is not just a request for assistance from support but also a really strange assist.  Please respond if anyone encounters the same situation.

I've got the newer/newest gt70 dominator pro, which came with windows 8.1 installed.
So I don't have the same issue as you.
But with killer and drivers for it, ive had nothing but problems.
As of right now, I deleted the killer suite and only have drivers installed. The LAN driver in my device manager shows the yellow exclamation mark, but it works. So that's where I am and that's where im choosing to stay.
I will end up, and soon, getting an intel wireless card, but not sure if you can replace the lan as I think that might be part of the board.

  • MSI GT70 20C WIN 8.1 - Slowness - Suicidal

Ever since I've upgraded to Window 8.1 from Window 8 my GT70 20C is never the same.  I bought this laptop for gaming but since my window 8.1 update I've been having the following problems:
    - Slow start up (please wait.... for 10+ Min)
    - Slow turn off time.  Screen will be off but you can hear the fan and see the processing light flashing
    - If computer is idle for 10 min, it automatically turns into sleep mode and it takes about 20 min or so to log back in
    - While playing Left 4 Dead 2 - my mouse skips and have no control for for brief 1 second every other 20 seconds or so
    - Adobe photoshop - Start up used to be fast less than 7 second to start on the first time but takes longer now
I've download the latest video card driver and there is no help.  I've uninstall Norton Anti-Virus and there is no help.  I've deleted my first account and created a new one that didn't help.  I've changed microsoft login to local login still didn't help.  The most painful part is turning on and off the computer and when idle more than 10min the computer goes to sleep by itself and it wakes up when it wants to... I had to hold the power bottom down to do a force start every time.
I've read many different blogs and I can't find a way to go back to Window 8.  I never receive a window 8 disk which I thought it should come with the purchase and I didn't even have a product serial key on the bottom of my computer so I can reformat everything back to Window 8.
I am seriously thinking about to sell this laptop and just build a desktop and install window 7.
    Please HELP!

MSI didn't give me a copy of Window 8 - what do I do?
I upgraded from XP to Window 8.1 - Do you like Window 7 better?  I never used 7 before but I heard it's the closest thing to XP.  any1?
What do you download with that 100MB+ speed?  hahahah
There should be an option to rollback to w8.
Windows 8 has proved to deliver more gaming performance than w7 on the same hardware. If you use this laptop for gaming, then don't go to w7. Especially if you are playing Bf4 or any game that gets use of dx11.1

it depends, there are different options and configurations that's available.
you have to ask your local reseller for exact specifications of the products that are available for your region

  • HD/SSD instalation

Hello. I`ve assembled few PC rigs in my life, but i`m really fresh with laptops. I would like to add a HDD or SSD to my GT70-2oc laptop (friggin Steam is eating my GB`s like cake, and i have really poor internet connection to redownload my favourite games over and over again). I`ve recently done some cleaning and saw that theres a place for one inside;). Also there is RAM slot free, so it would be nice to fill it with some memory;). Any ideas for hardware that suits my laptop?
    Regs...

Depends on what you can afford. I put 2x Samsung 1TB 850's in my GT70-2PC in October because I wanted it to be the first & last time for this laptop. YMMV though as I said depending on what you want to spend. Install a SSD for Windoze & anything else where you need fast loading & maybe use the existing HDD for storage that might only get read occasionally ?
Whichever way you go, avoid cloning & follow Darkhawk's guide here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=179716.0. Works first time everytime, chances are if you attempt to clone it may well barf & you'll end up having to do this anyway.
With the RAM, get HWiNFO/similar & see what it reports back for the existing RAM, either match it or if you want better specced get two modules the same & replace the existing module.

  • GT70 20C Ram upgrade question

I have just recently bought the GT70 20C and I want to upgrade the memory. I got the base model which came with a single stick of 8gb RAM, the module is installed in the Dimm slot on top of the motherboard (not the easy access one by removing the bottom cover) I want to install a second dimm to operate in dual channel mode
I need to install the ram in the second slot on top the the motherboard so it operates in dual channel mode, is this a big job to do? Can you access the slot by removing the keyboard or to you have to pretty much tear down the entire laptop to access?
    Anyone had experience doing this?
    Many thanks

The GT70 0NE and GT70 20X laptops, while visually look the same on the outside, are quite different on the inside.
Aside from the obvious hardware differences (different motherboard and CPU and GPU mainly), there's a few minor ones as well (such as the heatsink problem with installing memory).
Most likely though, the GT70 20C has dual channel memory just like it's older brother GT70's did.
I would install the memory on top of the motherboard first (under the keyboard) and see if it runs in dual channel. If it doesn't, then I'd move it to the bottom.

  • MSI Hybrid Power Utility - MSI GT70 20C

    MSI GT70 20C-059US
When I click on the Hybrid Power desktop icon nothing happens. I no longer get the interface to appear like it does before updating everything. I have installed the newer firmware and bios. Everything appears to be stable at this time but I cannot get the utility to run even after reinstalling it.
If I right click on it, I get options to run it with graphics cards but when I do it tells me to open nVidia control panel.
Is there some thing that could effect it from working that I inadvertently changed?
    Thank you for your time.

I've run into this same problem on my GT70 20D just two days ago. I tried reinstalling it as well but nothing seems to be working. Anybody have any ideas?

  • New ssd install in MBP 5,3 (mid 2009 model)

    Hello,
New to ssd installing and terminology used in some of the discussion forums I have been reading!
About to install my new ssd and have a few questions before starting.  (ssd is a crucial M500 480gb)
I'll try to be a blunt as I can because I tend to ramble on.......
    1. Do I upgrade/downgrade efi? (Read in other discussions)
    2. Do I enable/disable trim? (Read in other discussions)
    3. I am currently running 10.6.8 and wanted to purchase the newest OS possible to install.  I've read of a few issues of ML and the battery drain issues.  Is it best to just stay with my 10.6.8 for now?
    4. I also purchased an 8gb ram upgrade over the current 4gb ram to do at the same time.  Don't I have to reset something once I power the MBP back up to recognize the ram?
    5. I purchased an external case to put the (currently in the computer) hdd in once I take it out.  I planned on installing the ssd, putting the current hdd in the case, and migrating only my contacts, iTunes library, iPhoto library, and my flip videos from it.  I have the original install disc from my MBP-can't I just install it onto the ssd from the DVD drive? (I hear of people installing the OS from USB-is there any disadvantage/advantage to this over my install disc?). I'm just wondering if it will give me the option of installing from the DVD drive once the ssd is installed and blank.  ??
    6. Is there anything else I should consider migrating to my new ssd?
    I think that's it.  Thanks!!

This maybe too late, but here it goes:
    1. Do I upgrade/downgrade efi?
    - do not mess about with that. I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro and am running 2x SSD drives inside without a problem. Only look in to EFI upgrading if the Negotiated Link Speed in System Information (Under Sata) is not reported as 3 Gigabit but rather as 1.5, once you install the SSD
    2. Do I enable/disable trim? (Read in other discussions)
    - some people report advantage from trim being enabled. I've personally noticed lockups during shutdown so keep it off. Typical SSD these days have grabage collection, but it is up to you in the end of the day.
    3. I am currently running 10.6.8 and wanted to purchase the newest OS possible to install.
    - don't purchase anything and download Mavericks for free, battery life will improve
    4. I also purchased an 8gb ram upgrade over the current 4gb ram to do at the same time.  Don't I have to reset something once I power the MBP back up to recognize the ram?
    - the mac will recognise the ram anyway. You should however rest SMC see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    - yes by inserting the Disk in to the optical drive and holding 'C' during startup wil take you to the boot options, where you can format the SSD drive and install the OS
    - advantage of OS on USB is faster install (quicker read speed) and for those people like me who substituted the optical drive for another HDD or SSD.
    6. Is there anything else I should consider migrating to my new ssd?
    - depending on your previous HDD size (and file sizes - looks like you have lots of photos and videos), make sure you watch what files you are bringing over as you can quickly run out of space on the SSD. You can use OmniDiskSweeper for example, to tell you wat files on your disk use the most space etc.
Hope this helps. And I am sure someone else will come up withh more suggestions

  • Mac Pro Missing Serial Number after SSD install

After installing a new SSD in an unused bay in my Mac Pro (OS 10.8.4) and setting it as my start-up disk with only System, Apps, Library and Users Folders on it, I have had a remarkable improvement in performance - things simply snap open now & I have not seen a spinning beachball/cogwheel until....
Messages will not work now - on opening, the program asks me to enter my Apple ID & Password but will not accept the entries (which I have double-checked & confirmed on my Mac Book Pro, iPad & iPhone) - I get a prolonged spinning cogwheel & then a message that it could not connect and I should check my Network Connections - I did & they are all working fine for other programs.
On line sources indicate that the iMessage Registration process involves the Mac's Serial number.
This no longer appears under the About This Mac Menu item when I click on the Version 10.8.4 line (the Build Number does appear).
This 4 year old Mac Pro has never had the Logic Board replaced.
And iMessages worked great prior to the SSD install.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    ...John

you cloned the system? used Migration or Setup Assistant?
I doubt it has anything to do with the SSD.
But you might include what you did, what make of SSD even, and some brands (but not Samsung) would need firmware update.
You also need to use TRIM Enabler on any and all SSDs (unless you paid dearly and bought an Apple device).
Before you clone, install TRIM Enabler!
And after you clone, run Disk Utility's REPAIR DISK on the SSD -- just to be on the safest side.

try creating a new user account. I doubt it is the SSD, or you, though it could be your OS install or just the common issues with iMessages. Is there not a forum for it? I'd think there would be.

  • SSD Install Experiences MacBook Pro 2011 i7

This is a report on the beastie that I installed in my MacBook Pro 2011:
    http://thranblog.info/post/8615912997/ssd-install-experiences-macbook-pro-2011-i 7

The fan normally runs at about 2000rpms - if they're loud enough to actually hear, you might have a problem. Mine can rev up to about 4000rpms sometimes and I'll hear them then, but it's nothing consistent.
To see how fast your fans are running, download the free iStat Pro widget. If they're running abnormally fast, you could try a SMC reset to see if that will help.
I would also uninstall VirusBarrier - your really don't need av software on a Mac but if you feel as if you must have something, try the free ClamXav and/or Sophos for Mac (both recommended by our resident malware/virus guru, Thomas Reed).
    Good luck,

Wow, that solved this problem. I had 5 GB of systemd logs. I deleted them (after making a backup on another disk), I limited the journal size to only 50MB, and now NetworkManager only lasts 4 seconds to start, and GDM appears 10 seconds earlier. Thanks a lot

  • Extra ssd instalation

Maybe have someone some info about extra ssd instalation into 2011 model 27 iMac (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.4-27-inch-alumin um-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html) by apple support service?
I live in the Nederlands and would like to ask support by apple to help improve my iMac (still with Apple Protection Plan).
Is it possible? and how much does it cost? and how much time it takes? and most importance - who I have to call for this service?
    thx for any help

Apple does not upgrade hard drives after the computer has been purchased. You'll have to go to an Apple Certified 3rd party computer repair shop to determine the cost. If an un-certified shop opens up your iMac, your AppleCare will be voided.

  • MBP doesn't see newly installed SSD (installed into optical drive bay)

    Hi all,
Re-posting, from an earlier post, with a more specific topic.  I recently installed an OWC 2.5" SSD, via the OWC Data Doubler, replacing my old, non-working, optical drive.  I installed it step-by-step, from their installation video.  BTW - I also installed a RAM upgrade, and, that installation (although admittedly easier than the SSD install) is working fine.  However, my MBP is not "seeing" any new drive.  Does anyone know if there is a step that I am missing?  Or have an idea what I may have done wrong?
I re-opened the machine and double checked that all 3 "connections":
    From SSD to Data Doubler Frame;
From Data Double Frame to SATA tab; and
    SATA connector to the motherboard;
WERE ALL SEATED PROPERLY.  Yet, the MBP still does NOT see the newly installed drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    MJ

    Hi,
Have you tried booting up while holding down the Option key and the selecting the SSD? Or putting the SSD in the other bay?

  • GT70 2PC SSD install

    Hi guys,
    I recently got a GT70 2PC-1253AU.
    It has the I7-4800 , 16gb ram , GTX870m and a 1TB HDD.
I want to install a SSD and just wanted to ask a few questions.
The HDD is installed in the top left slot and the bottom right is free. is the bottom right one sata3 and i can put the SSD there or do i need to swap the drives over once i get the SSD.
Also it came with windows 8.1 installed. How can i reformat the OS onto the SSD without buying a new copy of windows? Can i format it through the F3 recovery option?
    Cheers,
    Nasool

I have the exact same model as you I.E the 1253AU, and according to the documentation & what I remember of the layout when I repasted last, I'm almost certain the spare slot is an mSATA slot despite appearances. Perhaps someone else will confirm for us one way or the other (if not, MSI will with an email).
Edit to add - Just rechecked the documentation (haven't opened the case again as I'm typing on this now  ), and yep, the spare slot is mSATA, unless they changed the actual specs on the fly just before they started production & didn't change the docs, or even changed specs part way through a production run ?
It varies.....it all depends on your initial configuration....GT70's can come with the 'super raid' option which makes one of the slots accept MSATA SSD's. In other configurations, it will come with slots for 2 x 2.5" HDD/SSD's because it didn't come with a super raid adapter.
So yes, some do come with mSATA sockets, others do not. It all depends on the initial configuration. You can buy the adapters so you can put a normal 2.5" HDD/SSD into the slot instead of the Super Raid adapter, but MSI does not sell the Super Raid adapters as far as I know.
The specs/docs have nothing to do with it. It all depends on the initial configuration. Again, NOT all GT70's come with the super raid adapter.
