SSD Internal Drive Showing Up As External Drive!

Hello,
My Internal SSD is showing up as an external drive.  I did a backup of all the data to another drive, erased it and re-partitioned it but it is still showing as a removable external drive.  I don't know what to do as it "was" my startup drive so in the meantime I installed OSX on another drive for now.  Would there possibly be a terminal command to change the drive to internal or something else I can do?
I appreciate the help.
Here are some pics to help hopefully.

As LexSchellings said, anything not on the built-in internal bus is considered external by the OS.
By the way, don't look at your device using System Information because that will really set your head spinning:

    Hello!
I am nes to Mac computers and I love ITunes. I have bought some TV shows and I am running short of storage and I have some questions.
    1) Can I transfer my TV shows to an external drive?
    2) If I erase these files, can I download them again? I bought a movie I erase it to make space, but I went to the Itunes store again and it says I have to pay for it.
    3) Can use ICloud to store my TV shows? and how is it done if possible?
    Thank you so much!!

You can move the files to an external drive.  Delete the entry from your collection but don't let iTunes delete the file.  Copy the file to the external, then drag to iTunes to add it again.  Hold down the option key while doing this so the file doesn't get copied to the internal again.
Alternatively use: Dougscripts: Relocates selected files to a folder of your choice - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected - replaces "Move Files To Folder"  to move files.
    2) I wouldn't trust Apple or the media companies.  They could decide tomorrow to not allow a second download and you'd be stuck.  The media company could decide to pull an item from iTunes Store.  You are the only person who can be relied upon to ensure you always have access to your media copies.

I have my itunes media stored on my external hard drive.  On this external drive I have a folder called "TV shows".  I previously cut and pasted itunes TV shows to this folder to free up some space.  How do I incorporate this folder (TV shows) back into the itunes library?

assuming the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked in preferences > advanced, drag the folder into an open iTunes window while holding option (⌥).

  • I am trying to deactivate my photoshop Elements 9 on a crashed c drive, now on a external drive conn

I am trying to deactivate my photoshop Elements 9 on a crashed c drive, now on a external drive connected to my new computer. When I open, from the old C drive the deactivation option is not highlighted on the drop down menu- its not available. How do I deactivate this version on the old C drive(now external) so I can Activate on my new drive?

Probably the simplest solution is to contact activation support:

There's usually a place in that window where you can start a chat session and get it straightened out right away.

  • My itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive,  rather than my external drive ( originally set up to as default ).  How do I re-set itunes to look for my library on the external drive ?

Suddenly, after a year of good operation,  my itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive, rather than the external drive it had been set up to as default   How do I get it to search for the stored library on the external drive again ?

    Quit iTunes.
    On the external drive;
1 - Create new folder called iTunes (or whatever you want).
2 - Move your music folder into this.
3 - Go to the the C: drive iTunes folder.
4 - Copy the iTunes library.itl file into the iTunes folder on the external drive.
5 - Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
6 - Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library.itl file you just copied to the external.

  • Files not showing up on external Drive

I'm having this really strange and irritating issue with my external hard drive in 10.5.
I use a folder named "incoming" on an external usb HDD for all my miscellaneous downloaded files, but for some reason, when the transfer completes in the download application, the new files don't appear there. Similarly, when I unzip or create new files on this drive, they'll inevitably either disappear, or folders will appear empty.
Even stranger, I can actually see all these files and use them like normal if I open my external drive by typing "open /Volumes/Storage" in Terminal, but if I browse through Finder, half are missing.
I was using this drive in Tiger with no issues, it's HFS+ formatted and I've tried running Verify/Repair in Disk Utility to no avail.
UPDATE: Upon looking at the mount point of the drive in finder, it says it's mounted at "/Volumes/Storage 1". When I open that mount point in Terminal I can only see some of the files, but when I open "/Volumes/Storage" I can see all the files.

I have a customer also reporting this same issue with files copied to an external RAID not showing up in Finder, since the 10.5.2 update / Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates. Zapping PRAM fixed the problem temporarily but after a day it's come back. [This is only one of four identical iMacs updated in the same manner that is showing the problem].

  • Can I move a TV Show to an external drive without losing it?

I have a 60 GB video iPod and a MacBook with a 120 GB hard drive. I have 9 GB of TV show files that I'd like to keep but I don't need them on my hard drive because I doubt that I'd watch them again anytime soon (the packrat in me won't let me just delete files that I paid for at the iTunes store). Can I just copy the folder for that show to an external hard drive and delete it from my MacBook? and import it back into the library if I wanted to watch it at some time in the future?

Thanks-I was pretty sure that was the case, and it would be no loss in this case, but it helps for future reference.

  • How to backup internal A/V hard drive (not the OS drive) to a 2nd external drive (not the TM drive)?

I'm a new Mac Pro user.  Now running OS X Lion.  Always used Windows platforms before with Seagate hard drives and their included backup software where I was able to setup different backup schedules to back up various drive and file combos individually/separtely.
Here's what I would like to do on my new Mac Pro:
I have TIme Machine already setup to backup my OS X hard drive (internal #1) to external hard drive #1.  that works fine.
I have a 2nd internal hard drive which i only want to use for FInal Cut Pro X media files (video and audio for various projects) and I would like to back that drive up to a different external hard drive.
I do not want to lump these files into the TM backup i have already setup for the OS on ext. drive #1.  I want to keep a backup of my Final Cut media on external drive #2.
Any suggestions?  How do video professionals usually backup their A/V drives individually and regularly (as I am sure most of you do not store your media on your OS drives).
    Thank you!

There are software back up tools like Roxio's Retrospect, though many professionals use RAID systems with redundancy that automatically mirror their main media drive.

  • Internal Hard Drive Boot  Failure leaves external drives locked

My three week old Mac Pro decided not to restart this morning. It's a long story, but after consulting with Apple Support I had to do a clean install. After restoring my system I discovered that two of my external My Book drives are now locked. These came from my old PPC setup. They mount on the desktop, but I can't open the drives. Permissions are set to custom and a little lock appears on the drive icon. Two other drives, a Maxtor and Acomdata are not affected. It's the same with either FireWire or USB. The support specialist said it's because those drives use Apple Partition Map (APM) instead of GUID. I can read the drives if I log on as Root Administrator, but I can't write to them nor change permissions. This was not an issue up until today's failure. The support spec. basically said that I would have to reformat. These are my media backup drives and I'll have to purchase an additional 1 TB to temporarily move the data. Does anyone know about this issue of APM vs GUID? Thanks.

Search is indeed my friend. I found this thread which solved my problem

  • Why does Firefox show as an external drive on my Mac when I download.

When I download Firefox using the 3 step guide for my Mac, the icon is shown as an external drive and not the usual Firefox icon. I drag it into the Apps folder as suggested, but when I try to follow the next steps to place in the dock it will not do it. I try clicking on the icon to open firefox but nothing works. Can you help? Operating system Mac 0S10 .4

    Hi.
Thanks for getting back to me.... You are right I missed the bit where you have to drag the icon across on the display that pops up. It is not clear that you have to do this. I was dragging the dmg file from the desktop into my Apps folder which was the mistake. All good now and Firefox is working nicely. Thanks

  • Hard Drive upgrade for secondary external drive

    Hi experts,
    I have the 300Gb internal drive (#1).
I also have a 650Gb external drive (#2) I use for Time Machine as well as storing other files (overflow).
I'm looking to get a network attached drive (#3) so I can
    - access it through my home network
    - expand my storage
    - use it to backup my internal drive, and my extra file contents in my external drive #2.
Can TM backup my internal drive and external drive(s) (or can I only pick ONE)?
Will I be better buying two MORE external drives? I'm really confused with backing up external drives, and I don't really think I need a RAID solution, just HD crash recovery.
    Ideas?

What I really want to do is have a NAS to share stuff so that my TV has access to it, have a bit more space and have backup protection on all my data. This means I would need to reconfigure as such:
existing internal drive (1) essential os, applications (A)
existing external drive (2) work, tv shows, movies (B) (remove TM backups to free space)
new external drive (3) Time Machine backup (to backup A + B)
NAS drive (4) to store tv shows, movies copied manually
I guess the limiting issues is that it doesn't seem like NAS data can get backed up with Time machine so it can only be used as a target. What I mean is I can't use a NAS drive directly because where would ITS backup be?
I thought maybe I could solve my problems with one huge NAS, but that only frees up some space on my existing drive and only gives me a larger backup repository.

  • Problem erasing MacBook drive while booted from external drive

    Hello,
I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this.
When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:
    Disk Erase failed
Disk Erase failed with the error:
    Could not unmount disk.
When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted."
When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine.
As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.
    Any solutions to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Hello Jason and welcome to the discussions. You could try to re-partition the internal drive while booted from the external. Using disk utility from the externals Application/Utilities folder click on the internal drive (the manufacturers #, should be above the internal name) and select the partition tab.
change the partition table and then restore it back to the original. This will wipe out all the partitions and should show the drive as empty. Then I would erase all the free space using the erase tab and selecting your Macintosh HD or whatever you named your new internal startup drive the click on the "erase free space" button. Select "zero out deleted files" then erase. It will warn you that the drive is full when it gets near the end...thats okay just click to ignore or proceed. That should do it.
    Cheers,
    Glynn

  • HT1751 What is the best way to move my iTunes library from an external PC drive to a Mac external drive?

I just make the move to Mac computers.  My iTunes library is currently on a PC formatted external drive.  I would like to move it to an external drive that i have formatted for Mac.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the entire library on the external drive or just the media folder? If it is the latter, and you still have access to the PC then see make a split library portable.
If the drive is in FAT32 format you can connect a portable library directly to the Mac, holding down Option as you start iTunes. Otherwise you either need to copy it to a local drive (Mac should be able to read NTFS) or install a full service NTFS driver so that the library can be read and updated.

  • I'm attemping to back up my system, entire computer, hard drive w/ LaCie 500gb external drive.

I am attempting to back up my entire computer w/ an LaCie external drive.  I don't have "airport", so I guess time machine will not apply, ? work. ? I am theathered w/ firewire 800.  I have formated the disk, and need to know how to copy - back up the entire system, hard drive, ?  I tried to click and drop it, but...
How do I accomplish this task.  I want to have a back up of everything in case, (God Forbid), it happen's.  And I have to turn my computer, and Iphone over to a frenesic firm to establish my surfing record.  I could use any advice you have there as well.  I tried the Apple store, but they just do repairs.
    Thanks, Blessings, Bob

You certainly can use Time Machine. Firewire 800 is a great way to go.
You just have to activate Time Machine from System Preferences and tell it to use that LaCIe disk.
