SSD is the future? Not so fast...

The Bleak Future of NAND Flash Memory
I'm clinging to my huge capacity hard drives (3TB externals)  for now. I only cold boot once in a while, and to this end, I'm drawn to the hybrid SSD-hard drive approach.
" Conclusion
The technology trends we have described put SSDs in
an unusual position for a cutting-edge technology: SSDs
will continue to improve by some metrics (notably density
and cost per bit), but everything else about them
is poised to get worse. This makes the future of SSDs
cloudy: While the growing capacity of SSDs and high
IOP rates will make them attractive in many applications,
the reduction in performance that is necessary to increase
capacity while keeping costs in check may make it difficult
for SSDs to scale as a viable technology for some
applications. "
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I'm currently still staying away from SSD for my work stuff.  The capacity is just not there.

  • If I wanted to upgrade my new iMac in the future, how would I go about it?

    I have no desire to void the 3 year Applecare plan I paid for.
    I just bought the new iMac 2011, I would like to upgrade the RAM, the HDD and add an SSD in the future, without doubt. Does this mean that, in order to do so, and remain within warranty, I am going to have to bring my iMac to an Apple Store, buy the parts directly from them, and pay for labour?
    Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Greetings,
    Memory you can upgrade yourself.  It is covered in the manual for your computer: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_mid2011_ug.pdf
    --This is the only customer installable part.
    The hard drive is another matter.  iMacs are HIGHLY compact desktop computers.  Gaining access to the hard drive requires removing the LCD and the glass that covers it.  While one could do this in theory, and perhaps not damage any components in the process (which is what voids the warranty), I wouldn't risk it.
    Apple Retail stores do not in general offer after market upgrades.  You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
    Personally, I'd buy a computer with an HD that meets my needs and use external drives as needed as they are very reasonably priced these days.  Its not like you're gonna be carrying the iMac around .  Or maybe you are?  27" portable?
    Once the 3 years are up (if you keep the computer that long) you can start cracking it open if you like.  Though frankly there may something even better out by then.  Having the AppleCare ups the re-sale value so you could sell the old system online and buy something new.
    Hope that helps!

  • The programming language of the future: a philosophical question

    So after reading some of these posts and reflecting on the history of programming languages, I find myself wondering what the programming language of the future will be? As the human-computer interface evolves (touch interfaces, voice recognition, computer vision, etc) how will this influence the process of creating computer programs? Will programming become more graphical (e.g. flow charts, UML diagrams, etc)? Setting ego's aside, does it make sense for programming to be more graphical? Will we reach a point where we can essentially just sketch out a concept and let the compiler/interpreter handle the rest?
    Perhaps this question is best left to Clark and Asimov, but they're dead. This leaves you guys.

    geniuz wrote:I think the mistake of the scientist in question was not that he re-derived the Trapezoid Rule, but that he published it as if it was a new invention, while it existed and was already published in some form. That certainly could be prevented by reconciling to literature before publishing. In fact, I'd not even blame the scientist in question too much, rather the commission that approved his paper to be published in the first place.
    Sure, he didn't publish the paper in isolation - but the peers who reviewed it would have been people from the same or a related profession. My point is that this kind of error results from splintering of the disciplines. You seem to think that the splintering should be somehow undone or reversed at the level of the peer reviewer or the publisher - but non-specialists (or specialists in other areas) will not be invited to comment, because it will be assumed that they lack the qualifications to do so.
    geniuz wrote:Still, I think its a long stretch to compare the derivation of a Mathematical rule or method to the invention of a complete DSL.
    I think I didn't make it clear where I was going with that. My point was that splintering of specialisations from each other permitted this duplication of effort to take place. I see DSLs as a way to splinter disciplines from each other. Thus, the rise of DSLs would make it easier for duplicate effort to take place.
    geniuz wrote:The whole point of a DSL is that it allows experts in a specific domain to focus their efforts on creatively solving problems directly related to their field of expertise. When specific DSL's are integrated in university curricula world-wide, I hardly think there will be much duplicate effort going on.
    Sorry, but this seems a little naive to me. I can see why you might think DSLs would permit specialists to more efficiently focus on solving their particular problems, and I don't entirely disagree, but even if it's true, I don't think it's controversial to think this will lead to considerably more duplicate effort.
    geniuz wrote:Also, in the world of OSS, there are multiple tools that can perform the exact same job. Do you for instance consider the existence of both of the mail clients Mutt and Alpine as duplicate effort?
    I haven't used Alpine, but if it's exactly like Mutt, then sure, I would certainly say that's duplicate effort. The more people who use one single piece of software, the more bugs can be filed against that software.
    Also, I think this is a false analogy from the start. Mutt and Alpine are both written in C. If we're talking about the connection between duplicate effort and DSLs, let's consider the fact that "communicating and storing computational models of biological processes" (from the Wikipedia page on SBML) could be better done in Lisp, Lex/Yacc, or with the Lemon C++ library, instead of coming up with some new way of using harmful XML.
    geniuz wrote:I still don't quite see how this can be interpreted as a necessary weakness or argument against more complex systems. Sure, DSLs can be dependent upon lower level languages, but if they are considered to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of certain experts, what exactly stops them from becoming dominant and continually evolving?
    The fact that higher and higher levels of specialisation are concomitant with smaller and smaller user bases who still need to communicate with experts in other groups. I'm not saying DSLs should never be used. I just think they are essentially self-limiting, and just as bacteria will long outlive us more complicated life-forms, so too will the lower-level languages long outlive more cumbersome DSLs.
    geniuz wrote:I wasn't implying computers will ever be able to mimic the human brain, and I'm not even sure whether it is something we necessarily want to strive for. All I was saying is that computers have already become indispensable tools in virtually every scientific and engineering discipline. They are computationally strong machines able to solve numerically involved problems at rates no human can ever hope to accomplish. It is this very aspect that will continue to guarantee the succes of computers, not AI per se. Again, I believe computers will never (at least not while I'm alive) be able to truly independently mimic and outperform the human brain, especially when it comes to aspects like creativity, i.e. the very aspects of human intelligence scientists have not even been able to understand and quantify to this date. Hence, humans will always remain "in the loop" to a large extent.
    This all seems reasonable.
    geniuz wrote:Don't forget that laws of physics are "laws" that have been defined and created by humankind for its own convenience. Even recently this year, practice has shown that a concept as fundamental as the speed of light might not be as accurate as it was so widely acknowledged by the scientific community. This however hasn't stopped mankind from using these fundamental "laws" to invent e.g. radio communication and electronic devices.
    I don't think you're disagreeing with me. I'm aware of the fragile nature of what we call the laws of physics - but like you say, they're good enough that we can do things with them. It looks like our knowledge of the speed of light breaks down on really large length scales, and it looks like our knowledge of gravity breaks down on really small length scales, but the brain is in the middle. In between, our models for how the physical world works are very accurate, and it is in this regime that the brain operates.
    Also, you should note that most scientists regard those neutrino test results as residing within the bounds of experimental error, and therefore not strongly indicative that the neutrinos really did break light speed.
    geniuz wrote:I haven't said low-level languages will be abandoned completely, I think they will remain to serve their purpose as a base upon which higher level languages (like DSLs) are built. In that sense, I believe that the user base of these low level languages will become more limited to computer scientists, i.e. to the people responsible for "formulating suitable abstractions to design and model complex systems" (source).
    Seems reasonable.
    geniuz wrote:Having said that, I still don't see why it so farfetched that for the rest of the world, physically telling a computer what to do in their native tongue as opposed to typing it in some generic-text programming language, will become the de-facto standard. Hence, I will reformulate my statement by stating that programming as most people know it today will eventually become a redundant practice.
    I don't think a friendly human interface should be considered the same as programming. This thread, if we recall the OP, is about programming languages of the future, not user interfaces of the future. I certainly agree that user interfaces will become more intelligent and attractive. I only disagree that this will have any strong impact on how we do programming.

    I do not want a update automatic obligatory for the future firefox !!! Are we able to choose? PLEASE WE WANT CHOOSE !

    Hit Alt then T then O. It will open the options dialog. Select the Advanced Tab, then select the Update tab. There will be an option to not check for updates. I would however strongly encourage you to upgrade to the latest firefox. It's much safer, faster, and easier to use.

  • Can you keep extra songs on your iPod that are not in your iTunes library, and not lose these songs every time you want to delete something from your iPod in the future?

    I have all these songs that I want to store on my iPod but not on my computer, and I know that by choosing to manually manage my music I can still hang on to these songs when I add new songs to my iPod.  However, what if I want to delete songs off of my iPod in the future?  Will I lose all of the extra music that is on my iPod but not my computer, due to the fact that the only way to delete songs seems to be by syncing?

    The answer to the question in the title of the thread is yes, but it is not necessarily a good idea. At some point you are likely to find you need to restore your iPod for one reason or another, or it could be lost, stolen or damaged. If your songs aren't on your computer, and backed up too, then you will be less than happy.

    I have just over 100gig of music in my iTunes library plus what ever else I add in the future. Because of the amount I had to save my music library on an external drive as my laptop did not have the memory to hold it all. I want to back up my iTunes library and save it on a different external drive, one I store all my back ups on. Is this possible? If so how can I do it?

    To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
    Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • Ios 7 calendar does not show events 2 years in the future

    Why does ios 7 calendar does not show events 2 years in the future?
    I've entered the events more than twice and it all shows up in the OSX calendar but not on my iphone.

    Just tested it works even 3 years ahead.
    Tap Calendars (bottom, middle) is All iCloud selected (tick mark)?

  • Events created on iphone over a week into the future do not sync with mac

    Hello,
    I have the following problem: whenever I create an event on iCal on the iPhone (2.2.1 3G), this newly created event sync backs fine to iCal on my mac (macbook running 10.5.6), as long as it occurs within 7 days into the future. Any events that lie more than 7 days into the future will not sync back from my iphone to the mac.
    Example: today is 3/3. Any events create on the phone for 3/3, 3/4 ... 3/9 WILL sync back to ical on my mac. Events for 3/12 do NOT sync. Events for 3/10 8am did sync, but 11pm did not. Forget about your dental appt 6 months from now. As if there is some arbitrary "7 day in the future" cutoff.
    I called phone support, thinking there may be a hidden setting or so that I overlooked, and that was utterly useless. The Apple rep suggested to look in the app store for an application that might fix this. "Besides", he said, "nobody creates events more than 7 days in the future". ***?
    Looks like a bug to me, but maybe I overlooked something.
    Can anybody confirm this behavior?
    Is there any setting that I can try?
    Any procedure that I should try?
    ny other suggestions?
    Thanks much!
    Erik

    Before i began syncing calendar events over the air with my MobileMe/former .Mac account, I synced contact info direct with iCal on my Mac via the iTunes sync process. I had no problem syncing events created more than 7 days in the future with the direct sync with iCal on my Mac, and I don't have this problem syncing calendar events over the air with my MM account.
    I believe there is a setting under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences for syncing calendar events. I no longer have this available for my iPhone sync preferences since I'm syncing calendar events over the air with my MM account. I know the setting includes an option for syncing events in the past, but I don't recall if it included an option for syncing events in the future. There should be a setting for syncing all events. Is this selected?
    There is also a setting on the iPhone for syncing all events, or events 2 weeks back, or 3 months back, but nothing for limiting syncing events in the future such as limiting this within the next 7 days.

  • What can I do to prevent the control key from not working in the future?

    Background:
    I bough an macbook pro about 1 year and 3 months ago and after 9 months of usage my control key stopped working for about an hour or two.This happened every time I turned on or awoke my mac from sleep (lid down).I sent it to an authorized apple service center and they replaced the keyboard.Everything was fine for about 4-5 months when the same thing happened again, ctrl key stopped working but this time not when turning on my mac but at random times and for random intervals.I sent it again to the service center but they told me that this time it won't be for free because my 1 year warranty has expired.I should mention that in European Union and Romania (the country where I am from and from which the mac was purchased) the law is that any electronics device sold has to come with at least 2 years of warranty.Apple seems to ingore this law.
    Anyway, after long conversations with apple uk on the phone they agreed to pay for the keyboard but not for the labor which was 70 eur ($100).It's not much but my 2 year warranty should have covered it.The sad part is that I have no guarantee that it's indeed a keyboard error and not something else, this might happen again in 4 months and I doubt this time apple would agree paying for the keyboard (which is 150eur) ($215).
    I should also mention that before calling apple uk I tried apple's romanian number (listed on their site) and it didn't work on the 3 phone networks that I've tried (2 fixed and one mobile) which led me to believe that apple support is in fact a big joke.
    Suffice to say that I will no longer purchase any apple devices or software, I regret purchasing mac os x lion just a week ago, when I will no longer use it because I intend to sell all my apple gear (timecapsule, iphone4, macbook pro) and buy stuff from companies that value their customers and respect their contracts.
    My questions are this:
    1) why does apple ignore EU and Romanian law?
    2) what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future
    3) can I request that my macbook be more thoroughly inspected? I suspect the keyboard is not the main problem and it will soon happen again as it happened two times already.
    4) can I do something for the repair labor charge to be waved? It is illegal in my country to ask for one in this scenario...

    Everyone reading your posts here is just another MacBook Pro user. We're all volunteers, not Apple employees. No one here can speak for Apple.
    In my personal opinion, buying Apple products in a country where Apple has no stores and no corporate presence is a risk that the buyer takes knowingly. I don't think it's a wise risk, and I don't recommend that anyone take it. A small percentage of the products sold anywhere are going to have problems, and it makes more sense to buy an inferior product that can at least be serviced locally than to buy a superior product that may have to be sent thousands of miles for repair if anything ever goes wrong with it.

  • What are the symptons of macbook pro hard drive not running fast enough

    what are the symptons of the hard drive not running fast enough

    Physically the drive will be as fast as any other of its class, and if not then it's experiencing a mechanical issue that should prompt a warning or two in the system, especially if you use a drive management tool like Disk Utility that checks the drive's built-in "S.M.A.R.T." diagnostics.
    As for "logical speed," if there are bad blocks on the drive where sectors cannot be read or written to because of a breakdown of the storage medium, then this can result in a program or the entire system crashing or hanging (generally the latter is the case), where it usually pauses for a number of seconds at a time. This is usually accompanied by messages that state "I/O Error" or other similar warning in the OS X Console (in the Applications > Utilities folder).
    Beyond this, drive formatting errors such as might happen after a crash or power outage can result in similar hang-like behavior, though this is usually not as distinct of a hanging behavior as is seen with bad blocks.
    Finally, if the drive is simply full of files or highly fragmented (not as much of a problem in OS X, but it can happen), then this can reduce access time for reading and writing files, and prevent the system from optimizing the use of RAM, which can result in overall slowdowns. Heavy drive use can also cause similar bottlenecks, but this is ususally only an intermittent issue during a time when you are performing a heavy file transfer or copying process, or other task that occupies access to the drive's index and formatting (e.g., if you check it for errors with Disk Utility, then you may see the system pause or slow down during the check).

  • New Macbook Pro with a SSD.  Can it be upgraded in the future?

    The new Macbook Pro with retina display has a 250 GB hard drive.  My question is:  Can this drive be upgraded in the future (using a standard off the shelf SSD) or are you stuck with the 250 GB drive that it comes with?

    The Retina MBP is a totally closed system that cannot be hardware upgraded. Ever. Besides the fact that they used custom components, furthermore those were glued on so disassembly is close to impossible as per the teardowns carried out by IFixIt.com and others. Got a score of ZERO in terms of serviceability.
    So if you are gonna be beguiled by just a fancy screen, be sure to buy as much Mac as you can cause that's all the hardware you're gonna get.

  • An enemy to follow me around the screen but not too fast

    Hi I'm building English teaching apps but through games.
    I'd like a BUG enemy to follow me around but NOT TOO fast as I have little kids of 5 years old using this,
    Would it be something like get the coordinates of my HERO character and send the BUG there.
    I use POINT at the moment to send my HERO to where the mouse clicks.
    Could I send the BUG there as well but using less x and y increments.
    Would this be too much for the processor - too much going on with music playing as well?

    again, don't remove it:
    var speed:Number=.99;
    public function onEnterFrame(event:Event):void {
    var xDistance:Number=clickPoint.x-this.hero.x;
    var yDistance:Number=clickPoint.y-this.hero.y;
    if (Math.abs(xDistance)>10) {
    var angle:Number=Math.atan2(yDistance,xDistance);
    this.hero.x+=v*Math.cos(angle);
    this.hero.y+=v*Math.sin(angle);
    } else {
    this.hero.gotoAndPlay("static");
    enemy1.x = speed*enemy1.x+(1-speed)*hero.x;
    enemy1.y = speed*enemy1.y+(1-speed)*hero.y;
    if (clickPoint.x>=hero.x) {
    this.hero.gotoAndPlay("right");
    //trace(Math.abs(xDistance));
