SSD keeps using all space available

My new SSD boot drive is 240GB and only has Win7 and Adobe Master Collection, about 90GB but keeps filling the rest of the 240 GB SSD.  Is this a SSD problem with Win7, Adobe?  I use two 3TB HDD's for capture and export, storage etc.  I only keep the OS, Adobe programs and Nero along with the motherboard monitoring SW etc on the C drive SSD.  Its a Corsair GTX 240GB.  All brand new this year.  System is PC.  Motherboard Asus Sabertooth X79 with  i7 3.4 CPU.  64 GB RAM.

Virtual memory is still handled by Windows as it was back in the early days of Win 3.11 and the times of very limited memory. I also use 64 GB and I have a 1 GB static pagefile. Windows suggestions are based on systems with 2 or 4 GB memory, but since it uses such an antiquated algorithm, you get bitten by the sheer lack of logic of Windows when you have much more memory.
Do make your pagefile static, minimum = maximum size, and do not allocate more than maybe 4 or 8 GB for it when you have 64 GB memory.
Where is the logic that when you have 16 GB memory, the recommended pagefile size is 24 GB, but when you have 64 GB, the recommended size is 96 GB? That makes no sense at all. It is all caused by the old algorithm of 1.5 times physical memory, which was great on 2 of 4 GB systems, but is no longer valid today with massive amounts of memory.
Regarding the hyberfil.sys file. You can't just open CMD.EXE. It needs to be opened as an administrator, otherwise it will not work. If you have modified all your accesses to system files to include hidden and system directories, you can look if it exists, but if for instance your 'appdata' directory is not showing all contents, you have to modify your access rights first, otherwise a search for hyberfil.sys will not show up. Can you see in the root directory of your C:\ drive:
bootmgr
BOOTNXT
pagefile.sys
swapfile.sys
If hyberfil.sys is included in that list, you still need to adjust your power settings and delete it. If not, you are OK.

  • VHD Size is Maximum Size Allowed Without Using All Space in OS

Hello - I have a Hyper-V VM whose maximum size allowed is 700GB. Currently, the VHD file size is 700GB yet the OS is only using ~400GB (300GB free). Shouldn't the VHD size be about 400GB instead of 700? Every other VM I have checked matches the size being
    used in the OS.
As I was typing this I think I answered my own question. This VM has a fixed size and all of the other VMs we have are dynamic. I assume this is why? It is a SQL server so I guess it is fixed for better performance. I didn't set this up
Can I safely shrink the VHD down a little bit? When trying to get replicas of this VM, it keeps crashing the VM due to space limitations. It is on its own Cluster Disk but it only has a few GB free which is why I believe it is failing. How much free
disk space is needed where the VHD is located in order for replication to work?
This is our SQL server so I am a little cautious in what we do with it.
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

    Hi Mike ,
Based on my knowledge for vhd , when you delete a file then this file was not deleted on disk  thoroughly , just give it a deleted tag (the "old space" was not recycled until there is no new space for writing).
I think you can not make it smaller via shrinking .
Maybe you can try to compress the vhd file ( "edit disk..."  ), before you doing this please backup your VM first .
BTW , it is recommended to use fixed disk for SQL server .
    Best Regards

  • FF4 starts using all of available CPU after several hours, needs reboot.

This used to happen in the previous release version of FF, and it's apparently still the case in FF4.
Everything works fine after I start FF4. I have 50+ tabs open and visible through TabMixPlus and FF is fast and snappy just like I want it to be, but after several hours (most often when I come back to the PC in the morning) it starts hogging too much CPU. I don't care so much for memory, I have plenty of that to spare, but once it maxes out a core once per second, FF completely slows down about that often and becomes completely unusable. I have to reboot it every time to fix that.

    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to skydrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do

  • I have 16 GB physical memory and my kernel_task file grows to use all my available memory. How do I fix it? It is now completely utilized and Kernal_task is 9.3GB.

MY computer is acting strangly and now my physical memory of 16GB is completely utilized all the time. I noticed that the kernal_task is now 9.3GB and I don't know why. If I restart the system I am only using about 6GB and then it starts to use more until it is completely utilizing everything WHY?

  • While no applications are running, something is writing to the HD, using all available space

Very strange issue - This a White Mac Book, probably 6 years old, running 10.8.4 with 4g ram, 160G HD.
There's some process writing to the hard drive while no applications are running, using all the available disk space. I can watch the available space become less and less. At the same time, everytime I try to move anything to the trash, I get a prompt to authenticate. Once a password is entered, the files don't get put into the trash, but become deleted right away.
Things I've done to attempt to correct:
    Flash P-Ram - no effect
fsck -fy from single user - disk structure is ok, no errors.
Run verify and repair permissions from the recovery partition. Had no effect.
There is no AV app installed, but there's no space to install to check for viruses. Whatever is writing to the disk uses any available space which won't allow anything to be installed.
Can't create a new user as there's no disk space.
Only option I see is reinstalling the OS which I'm trying to avoid if I can.
    Any thoughts/Suggestions? Thanks.

If you haven't done so, try a Safe Mode boot ..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If that doesn't help, try locating a diagnostics log file.
Open the Console app located in HD > Applications > Utilites
Select:  System Diagnostic Reports  on the left.
Copy and paste the most recent kernel panic or crash log in your Reply.
Hopefully that will narrow down the problem.

  • Macbook Pro not using all available resources

    Hey All,
I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Late 2013) with the 750M and 16 GB RAM. I monitor most of my resource stats with MenuMeters and I've been noticing that it doesn't use all the available power to complete a given task, I assume to save battery life. What I'm wondering is, can i change some settings to allow my processor to run faster (not overclock, just use a higher percentage of available CPU power)? For example, I was updating league of legends, and the launcher was scanning itself to check for discrepancies. It took a minute or two and I noticed that my CPU percentage hovered around 20-25% and my SSD read speeds were not even close to the theoretical maximum (I've got the PCI-e interface). Is it just poor programming that doesn't let my computer work its hardest? I feel like I have a Porsche with governor on it.

Expanding on the above, with 64-bit systems like Mountain Lion, RAM becomes critical. 4GB is a bare minimum. And will fall short if you add a few hungry apps. What happens then? Unix's fallback for low RAM conditions kicks in: virtual memory. The system tries to simulate what it does not have: extra "RAM" in the shape of a chunk of hard disk space where unneded stuff gets dumped to free real RAM. Now the system starts to lag as it desperately tries to guess which part of stuff in RAM can be moved to the disk and waits till the slow disk operation concludes. Worst case is when space runs out in the drive and all comes crashing down.
So, upgrade and give the big cat at least 8GB RAM. Can go up to 16GB. And always leave AT LEAST 10% of the drive empty.
Lastly, if you want to know what your cores and threads are up to, start up Activity Monitor. Click on the CPU tab at the bottom part of the window. Then double-click on the CPU graph. A new window will pop open, showing the load on each thread the CPU can handle concurrently.

  • MBP not using all memory while rendering video

    Hey,
When I do rendering in Adobe Premiere Por CS6, my Mac is not using all the available RAM: 2773 MB used....5416 MB free
    Memory Pages:
                                  1658 MB active....1099 MB wired
                                  5420 MB inactive....11.2 MB free
it also says that:       3 swap files at peak usage
256 MB total swap space (20 MB used)
350 GB free storage space( total 750 GB)
    I have a MBP (OS x Lion) late 2011 with i7 2.8 GHz and 8 GB RAM
Adobe Premiere Pro is set to use 6.5 GB of RAM but not even while working in the programme it has ever used that much of memory.
During rendering, it is the only app running, except for Google Chrome.
If this info is not enough, just ask what do you need to know...
    PLEASE HELP, rendering takes forever.
    Thanks,
      kund

You never said what model Mac you have. Since this is the MacBook Pro forum, I assume you have some version of the MBP. 390% CPU would indicate CPU-boundedness for a quad-core CPU without active hyperthreading, or a dual-core CPU with hyperthreading active.
Given the high CPU usage and the low swap usage, it seems unlikely that memory usage is the problem, but I'm not a Premiere Pro user, so I couldn't guess what it.
You might try posting your question in an Adobe forum for Premiere Pro.

  • How can I make app use all available space in window?

    Hi,
I'm trying to embed my flash app in a browser window and have
it use all available space. I've found plenty of tutorials online
that tell me how to make it take up the whole window, and they
work, but that isn't what I want. I have other content on the page
(a bar of links across the top). I thus want the flash app to take
up the full width and almost all the hight, leaving enough vertical
space for the link bar at the top. Right now, I have it set to 100%
for both height and width in the object tag, and it displays the
link bar, but the bottom of the flash gets chopped off (an amount
exactly equal to the height of the link bar). It seems that setting
height=100% means 100% of the full window height, not the unused
height. Is there any way to make it do what I want?

I believe the 100% will be relative to the parent container
    of the Object/Embed tag.
If the Flex app is in say, a DIV that is correctly sized,
then 100% will fill the DIV. So I think you will need to get your
div sizing dynamically. A CSS expression maybe?

  • I have the iphone 4, i want in intall the update for ios 6. it says that i need 2.4 GB, is the update going to use all of that space? that is the only amount of space available i have left on my phone.

i would like to update my iphone 4 to the ios 6. i have 2.4 GB available and it says that in order to update my phone i need that much GB available. If i download this update is it going to use all of the remaining GBs that i have left? or will i still be left with 2.4 GBs?

From my experience, it doesn't. It will download the file, then will have to extract the file for installation, and after that, delete everything not needed anymore. That's what seemed to happened to me.

  • 500 gb hard drive 14 gb available --How do I determine what is using all of the space? Macbook os 10.6

I recently acquired a Macbook that has a 500gb hard drive but I cannot find what is using the space. OS 10,6 installed and I do not have recovery disks. I would like to wipe and re-install/
    Thank you.

Phone AppleCare and order replacement original disks, or if the computer shipped with 10.6.2 or earlier and you don't need the iLife applications, buy a Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD from the online Apple Store.

  • Other using all available space after update to iOS 8.3

Before updating I had at least 10GB of free space, but ever since I updated to iOS 8.3, I am repeatedly receiving the Storage Almost Full error.  The last couple days I have deleted 2 or 3 GB of data and apps to free up space, but the error returns the next day and I have no space available even though I haven't added anything that would take up that much space.  Looking at apps under Manage Storage, there is nothing taking up the space that was previously unused.  When I plugged my phone into iTunes, is says that Other now takes up more than half the available storage on my phone, and I have the 64GB model.
Other had previously taken up quite a bit of space, and I know that this is mostly documents and data from my applications and messages, but there's no way it should have jumped so dramatically in size.  It seems to be just growing to take up whatever available space there is on my phone.

i had the same problem. did a lot of research..my phone became unusuable. do you use the htc mail? if so that is your problem. there is a bug with it that it keeps eating your memory until you cannot use your phone. i had to do a hard reset. back to factory condition..not happy! but then went to the marketplace and got k-9 mail. that is now my default mail program. i have not had any issues since then. this is what i kept reading over and over for complaints on this phone. it is a major glitch and the only way, as of the time it happened to me, to fix it..

  • ITunes Match on the iPhone 4 uses all free space

iTunes Match on the iPhone 4 uses all available space (8GB). The deactivation and reactivation does not work. The problem persists! Even unplugging the Apple ID and opening the Music app there are still all the artists, playlists, albums, etc. etc. (in the settings app music occupies 0 bytes! Have not saved songs). I have already restored three times! restarting iPhone available space returns to 8GB, opening the Music app after a few minutes iOS noted that the space is occupied.
iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS regularly work with the same Apple ID!
    Any advice?

I am also reporting the same behavior.  I, like billybaloney, have an almost "topped-out" iTunes Match collection (I actually have to manage keeping the matched content under the Apple 25K limit, but that is a different matter).  Whenever I open Music app on my phone - 4S, iOS 7.11 - I see my available storage go to nil, and I start getting the "Storage Almost Full" messages.  Which, if you have received them, also puts a significant drag on the performance of the device.
I am fully aware of the download locally (device) of "played" content, so I expect the number of songs and albums I have played to be resident on the phone after, and that requiring manual cleanup.  I can see this by taking the phone offline (airplane mode, or literally out of coverage), and then opening the Music app and seeing only what is truly on the device.
I suspect that the "eater of free space" in the iTunes Match arena, for users with a large library of iCloud selections, is as simple as the iTunes library info to render for selection (not the music, but the artist, album, song and playlist lists, and the album artwork).  Resetting your phone is a PITA for workaround.  Something needs to be done, but I have a feeling nothing will.  Or it will require an iOS update to a newer version that my devices won't be eligible to load.
Any insight or help would be great.  Workarounds are only that: work arounds.  Solution is what is needed.

  • Compressor 4 is using all my hard disk space?!

    I have a Mac Pro, 3.7 Ghz Quad-Core Intel, 12 GB Memory.
Im trying to compress a video from FCP X (10.1.3), but Compressor (4.1.3) is using all of my hard disk space. The video I am trying to compress has 4 one minute HD interview segments and about 100 different photos. It's a tribute video that combines both forms of media into a presentation. The total time for the video is 11:23.
The project library itself works off an external hard drive that has 1.45 TB available. The only thing that goes locally to my hard disk are the FCP X backup folders.
I received a message saying that I needed more Virtual Memory, but am having a hard time understanding virtual memory and how to free up more of it.
    Any advice?

This is the message from my last attempt.

  • SSD not displaying the accurate amount of disk space available (Macbook Air 2011)

Weird issue and dont know if this is a bad SSD or just a bug in Lion BUT I have an i7 18 ghz 2011 macbook air with 256GB SSD. Now the issue is if i click on "Macintosh HD" and press command +I i get a one number, later i go into disk utility and it says a whole different number (space available). I deal with large files for video and im always deleting some and adding others. I reformatted twice and had everything re-installed, but after a few days of usage the symptoms come back. Anyone experiencing this issues? can it be a hardware issue or a bug in Lion? I called support, but they told me is out of my 90 days and i live way too far from an apple store.
    see the picture below.
Disk Utility says 69GB free, while the Finder says 199GB free? that is a HUGE difference.

If you have Time Mashine turned on, and no external drive attached, TM will keep "snapshot" backups on your local drive.
Actually, it will make "Local Snapshots" whenever Time Machine is ON, not just when the normal backup destination isn't available.   See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.
