Ssd mbp 2011

Hi,
Bought an OCZ Vector SSD drive for my MBP 8.2 (early 2011). The drive works fine externally on an USB-SATA cable. I formatted it and used CCC to clone the Toshiba HDD. I can boot from the external drive.
However, when I build the drive into the main bay using the SATA connector internally, the MBP doe not recognize the disk!!
When I replace the Toshiba disk, the machine does boot again, so the SATA cable is ok...
What is wrong??
Can anybody help??

Both bays, obviously, have 6.0 Gbps SATA connection - but that doesn't  mean that you're going to get 6.0 Gbps negotiated speed.
A lot of people have reported problems, here, with OCZ drives. I'm afraid that the only thing that I can suggest is getting in touch with OCZ - http://www.ocztechnology.com/ - you may want to try the forums first, before contacting tech support.
Not sure what else to tell you - I've a Crucial m4 series SSD and it's just worked since day one...
Sorry,
Clinton

  • 13" MBP 2011 - SSD vs HDD & RAM

I'm looking to upgrade a 13" MBP (2010) for a new 13" MBP (2011) with either a 500GB HD or 256GB SSD and a new portable external HD. I'm split between the HD and SSD.
Either way ... how do I determine if the 8GB RAM is that much more advantage over the 4GB RAM? Will the RAM being doubled ultimately change the way the MBP operates?
Looking toward the future release of Lion ... and planning ahead.

with MAC, 4GB is adequate and should be for the next 3 years unless Apple is planning on releasing some fluffed up garbage OS like the Windows Vista nightmare. MAC OS X uses just under 1 GB (as will the new OS X to be released this summer). The MBA runs fairly well on just 2 GB to put memory into perspective. The next model up with the MBP 13" (i7) doesn't perform much better than the i5; you can read into this further through sites such as anandtech.com and cnet.com by observing posted benchmarks. Also, if you go to cnet.com and check out the new MAC OS X Lion, you will see that most of the systems running it are entry level MBAs (2nd gen); check out the following link:
    http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_4-20042355-12.html?tag=contentMain;contentBod y;1n
Personally I would have a MBA if they had the new Sandy Bridge in them and more memory for the 1299.00 model. Considering that I didn't want to wait for the next refresh, I went with MBP. The MBP is not far off from the MBA.
If paying the extra $90 will give you peace of mind, then go for it. Personally I'd rather apply the cash to a protective case etc...
Also, I mentioned I'm a student; I just retired from Active Duty service in the Army as a Signal officer. I will be going back to college to work on my MBA. I somewhat have some credentials and experience in the hardware side of the house lol...
In regards to the MBA and MBP; to each his own. The 13" MBP comes with much more with similar dimensions, but also comes with the weight penalty.
Also, what are you doing with the system, most processors these days are more than adequate for the average or business user. How fast do you really need to go; 300MPH or 350MPH? Processors are fairly maxed our for most of us; most deciding factors now will be efficiency and battery life.
Being military, I understand the problem of carrying additional items on you; power, weight and size are everything. Out in the combat zone and being an officer managing 30+ soldiers and over 7 billion in assets, my HP netbook worked fine with my external for movies with moments of sheer boredom; the MBA is a powerhouse in comparison; the MBP 13" 4GB would have been flawless.
Back on topic, 4GB will more than suffice for the average user, unless your getting into gaming which the 13" MBP isn't even built for. 8GB of ram; decide on that if you are going for the 15 or 17 in model. Your dilemma is probably more of buyer's remorse; just get the ram and give yourself peace of mind.

  • MBP 2011 13" - SATA III SSD's issues

    Hello,
    I have a MBP 2011 - 13" i5 and SATA III 6/3 from week 23 (June).
    SSDs have issues:
Patriot Memory Wildfire fw 3.19 120 GB is unrecognized - The MBP can't find the SSD.
Crucial M4 fw 009 128 GB - Installing time Snow Leopard > 1,5 h, freezes, beachballs all the time, impossible to use.
I had a meeting at a Genuis Bar and the guy said to me: That isn't a cable issue because the HDD is recognized.
    What can I do?
    Best regards
    alex547

This is starting to sound similar to the mid-2009 MacBook Pro issue. Those machines shipped with a chipset that supported SATA 3.0GB, but the firmware had them locked at 1.5GB. After people realized this and started to complain about it, Apple released a firmware update enabling 3.0GB support. Unfortunately, tons of people ended up having problems with trying to use third party 3.0GB drives (Apple shipped the machines with SATA 1.5GB drives). Basically, Apple's only response was that they didn't support third party drives. That issue was never resolved. After thousands of posts... it just faded away:

  • How to limit SATA III to SATA II speed on MBP 2011

I've bought an 240 GB SSD with SATA III interface. The SATA controller detects the device correctly and sets up a 6Gbit/s connection.
With this set up my system - and according to many public postings many other systems, too - experience temporary failures of the connection, i.e. the system repeatedly stops sending data over the sata connection. Some information hint that the SATA cable doesn't support 6Gbit/s because it's not shielded well.
I would like to solve this issue by limiting the SATA-sped to 3Gbit/s. This should be possible somehow...
Does anybody know how to configure the SATA-controller to set up a SATA II / 3Gbit/s connection to the SSD?
    Thanks in advance!

This article (in German) describes a thorough test.
    http://www.mactechnews.de/journals/entry/Macbook-pro-2011-und-sata-3-Erfahrung-6 10.html
    Another one is
    http://forum.hardmac.com/index.php?showtopic=9957
(google for "ssd sata 3 macbook pro 13 2011 hang" and you will find many reports of incompatibilities.)
The author tested one sata II and three sata III solid state drives in an MacBook pro 13" early 2011.
There are many articles in the net describing problems with MBP 2011 and sata III ssds.
I hope that limiting the sata controller to 3Gbit/s will solve the problem.
I would prefer this solution over buying a sata II ssd. First, because all modern ssd have sata III support and second, because I will be able to use the ssd when I switch to the MBP 2012 at some time in the future.

  • MOUNTAIN LION ON MBP 2011

BEEN READING IN REVIEWS THAT ML IS CAUSING A LOT OF HEAT ON MBP 2011 EVEN WITHOUT USING APPS, FAN AND PROCESSEUR RUNS FULL BLAST. DID ANY OF YOU EXPERIENCE THAT ??

Good morning, i got an early 2011 MBP i5, 4GB w SSD, ML 10.8.1, using it most times with Ableton Live. The GUI of Ableton is very simple, in my old MB 2008 Unibody i can use it on my 2nd bigger screen without any Fan-noise. In my MBP 2011 i can use it on my  13"-screen without noise, or better without much noise. When i open a 3rd-party plugin, the fan goes up, but this happened on my old too.
Last week i open Ableton Live and start it with 2 Miditracks (i think, this 2 got togehter 5 or 10 KB!!!) send them to  an external synthesizer, no virtual instrument, effect, no midi-effect or 3rd-party plugin was runing... CPU in iStat pro was 2-3%, CPU-temp goes up to 75°C... S E V E N T Y F I V E . Gold-Medal, really.
If anyone made music here, he or she knows what i mean. A 2000 Euro Laptop with this noise is unacceptebal to me. Perhaps i should seen it like the win-user: it´s not a bug, it´s a feature
Anyway the MBP is a very fine machine, but i think, only for users of iLive-Suite.
Greetings from Germany, have a nice day

  • Mini DisplayPort - VGA and MBP 2011 not working

    Hi,
I can't get my 13" mbp 2011 to connect to VGA screens. I've bought a mini DisplayPort to VGA converter (an Apple one, not a no name) and if I connect a display over VGA the screen stays black. My mbp recognizes the display, I can see the display's model, resolution etc but no signal. I've tried multiple screens, none work.
I don't have other converters so I can't test if HDMI screens for example do work.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 2011 13" i7 and am having the same issue when connecting it to my LG TV through the HDMI adapter. However when I connect it to my HP external monitor it works but it's VERY blurry... so blurry that it hurts the eyes to look at it for more than a few mins.
My previous MBP (2010 13") works fine however with both the TV and monitor. I even reconnected it just to make sure and they both work flawlessly.
I only have 14 days total to return this new MBP and 5 of those days are used up so if I can't get this fixed by then I have no choice but to return it and go back to my old MBP.

  • No 1920x1080 output to external monitor from MBP 2011 OSX 10.6.8

    Hi, I have a MBP 2011 running OSX 10.6.8.
I have recently purchased an Asus ML249H Monitor and the Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable 10 ft (3 m) MDPHD10FT.
The monitor should display at 1920x1080 natively but does not. The MBP max output resolution is 1600x900 on this screen. Is this a known issue with the MDPHD10FT cable or is it OSX? What it the work around to get 1920x1080.
    Thanks

i had to go into iCal Preferences and delete my account and then put it back in.  Everything is working fine, now.

  • My MBP 2011 can't detect microphone, why?

My internal microphone works perfectly fine but when I insert an external microphone, my MBP fails to detect it.  When I go to System Preferences>Sound>Input, nothing changes in the "Line In" area when I plug in my microphone.  When I try to speak into my microphone, it's not picking up any sound at all.  My headphone port works fine.
NOTE:  My MBP 2011 went in for a logic board replacement/repair 2 weeks ago at an Apple Store.  Is it possible this microphone issue is caused by a logic board problem?

This because line level is not Mic level, line level requires about 60 dbv/dbu or more or less of electrical gain (depending on voltage in to load specifications, db short for decibel is not necessarily a measuremet of SPL, sound pressure level, it is a mathematical equation reducing complex equations to a unit of measurement to use in math expressions...very simply put) than a microphone can generate.
You would need a mic pre-amp/mixer to provide a line signal, a mic can not provide anywhere near this level.
This is a very simplified explanation of the electrical therory at work here, and I don't think you are probably interested reading quite complex math equations that "crunch these numbers.
If you do an online search you will find a plethora of pre-amps that will boost this level up to line level, or you can look in to something like the Griffin iMic USB interface which will allow you to use a mic level signal into your USB port easily and affordably.

  • Backlight keyboard issue (MBP 2011)

Well I installed Lion and my MBP 2011, brand new illuminates when starting up.  It goes bright then dims down to the setting I have (off).  It's annoying but how can you stop it from illuminating at start up.  I tried a SMC reset for my intel MBP i7 computer.  Any other suggestions?

Try System Preferences>Keyboard and UNCHECK  'Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light'.
    Ciao.

  • MBP 2011 Early fans issue

Hi, i've recently bought brand new MBP 2011 (early) version, and i wanna know is it ok when fans becoming so noisy when i play the game, or run some huge application. I worried about that this can harm my laptop. thanks.

the fans spin up when the computer is under heavy load, as a result they get quite noisy in order to disapate the heat generated by the Processor and Graphics Card, also these computers generate a vast temperatures that the fans can just about cope with, under load i have seen my 2.2GHz i7 2011 Macbook Pro hit 92-95 degrees Celcius far too warm in my opinion.

  • Upgraded to Maverick, now MBP 2011 has black screen while booting

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Maverick, and I am already regretting it. Upon installation, my MBP (2011) was running slow, so I restarted it. Now, when my Mac is trying to boot, the brightness is at (roughly) 25%, and I can barely see what's happening. It looks like the loading cursor is present onscreen. The good news is that I can hear the startup chime. However, after 10-15 seconds, the screen fades to black. When I press any key, I can hear the default error sound. I tried Command+R, but that didn't do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what happened. Upon the umpteenth time restarting the laptop, the scree is now at 100% brightness. I was able to log in as well. All is good.

  • After SMC reset, MBP 2011 with Yosemite OS cannot restart

My MBP 2011 which I recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite has been giving me endless problems when it restarts or reboots. when the power button is turned on, it starts up with an apple icon with a loading bar below it. The bar progress rather slowly and somewhere before reaching the halfway mark, the whole computer shuts down and restarts by itself. This process can actually go on for like 24 hours without a single break and the last experience I had was thaynir has been restarting and shutting down for the past 72 hours!!! Finally, I did a SMC reset by removing the battery cable, pressing the power button without the battery (5secs) and got the unibody assembled, plugged in the MagSafe and tried turning it on.
to my utter shock, after the SMC reset the MBP now cannot be turned on, no lights indicated at the MagSafe and it is completely dead. What do I do??? Please help folk!

You need to take it to your local Apple Store and have it checked by a Genius. Thats the best and safest option available to you now.

  • MBP 2011 freezes and Kernal panic using Netflix?

Anyone have an issue with MBP 2011 13" i5 16G RAM freezing while using Netflix? Genius Bar diagnosed it as a bad motherboard. This issue started over a year ago the screen goes black and get three beeps chime sometimes i have to reset the RAM in order to clear it.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.
    Hope this might help...Thanks again.
