SSD on MacBook Pro 9,2 (13 inches mid 2012)

Hi, I have a brand new MacBook Pro model 9,2 and happy with it. I want to speed up the hard disc usage and considering replace the internal HD with a new SSD.
My question is the following: rather than just get 1 SSD to replace the original Apple HD, if I buy 2 SSD and put 1 to replace the original HD and the second to replace the DVD using an optibay, is still is useful if I need a lot of storage? Also 2 SSD will consume more battery than 1?
Thanks in advance.

Since the largest HD in the MBP is 1TB and what you have may be smaller, why not replace the HD with a  1TB SSD to get the speed advantage, and, if you need even more space, put the HD you've removed in an external enclosure which will still be as fast as it can go when using a USB 3.0 connection. And you'll still have your optical drive.

  • I just bought a new 13" Macbook Pro. Why is it mid 2012 model?

I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro. Why isn't it a mid 2014 model?

If your new MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) is the model without Retina display,
you likely have the correct model information per the mid-2012 designator; since
the model is still in production. The Retina models have seen update or refresh
since mid-2012, and so have a different build date; but not non-Retina model that
has an optical drive. Since the non-retina MB/Pro 13" has an optical drive, the
media on DVD includes an earlier OS X version, & software, plus hardware test.

You could check http://everymac.com for other product specs and also look
into the MacBook/Pro Apple Store online product page to match spec info.
Looks like you did get the correct model for the year, check model identifier
and series build info against other databases. Apple has additional info.
If instead, you intended to get a Retina MB/Pro model, then you may have an issue.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
    I thought about RAM:

    Thanks!

    Check this out:

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

  • Steps in upgrading HDD to SSD on Macbook Pro 13 Mid 2009

I need help in upgrading the RAM and Storage in my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2009. I have bought 8GB Memory and 512 GB SSD from Crucial.com. I have watched a lot of Youtube Videos on how to install them but I am afraid I am still missing some things I need to do.
I have created a back up on an external drive and have been updating it regularly. I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did).
Is there anything else I need to do? How about the OSX? Do I need to create a back up for it? Or is it part of the back up I have on an external drive?
    Please help! Thank you.

  • 128gb ssd on macbook pro can't boot from any win dvd

Like in title, installed 128gb ssd on macbook pro and can't boot from any windows based dvd.
I’m try just everything... First I was put new ssd disk in laptop, boot and than choose windows boot cd disk for startup device. CD/DVD working 10-20 sec and after that nothing happened for 3-4 min… I can just turn off computer. I was try to boot with win7, vista, xp and other boot dvd-s for partition management… Every attemp simply freeze machine.
Then I was try to install mac os (snow leopard) from install dvd and installation was done smooth without any problem… Really don’t know why I can install osx and can’t install or boot any type of windows cd/dvd.
After installing snow leopard I was try to make new partition and install windows trough apple bootcamp 3.0 but again same problem. When machine reset and try to boot from cd it simply freeze.
Falcon 128gb SSD attached over USB workin fine eaven osx booting from external ssd. SO, next what I wish to try is to clone old 320gb with two partitions to new 120gb ssd. I'm just try eaven this and when ssd attach to laptop it says that there is no bootable device... so, they don't see ssd like bootable...
    Configuration:
    Macbook pro 15 (late 2008 i think)model 3.1
    128gb gskill falcon ssd
Mac firmware 1.3 (i think, how I can make upgrade and check fw ver under windows)
    hdd firmware (1571)
    Regards,

p.s. any sugestion for some other ssd that will work on this machine?

Does a Macbook Pro 13 inches (Mid 2012) come up with a Mac OS X install disc? What if some problems will occur regarding the OS? How can I fix it? Thanks.

No. Macs that came standard installed with Lion or later don't come with media, and, indeed, some don't even come with DVD drives to run media in.
...What if some problems will occur regarding the OS? How can I fix it?...
Such Macs come with a hidden recovery partition. You can boot from that and restore the OS if that's what's needed, or run Disk Utility to repair the HD. Check out http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 for details.

Prices have crashed. Look and you can find Samsung 128's and others for $89 sometimes.
It is not just moving the OS and data apart, though it does matter, and more from you should never have the OS cluttered with data, been doing that for... 35 yrs. 0.01 ns vs 10 ms. 60k IO's per second. Reads in 220MB/sec but held back from making full use of SATA 6G.

Make sure the RAM is rated for your vintage and model Mac, and states so from the link you buy it from.

  • Hard Drive Replacement for MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009)

Recntly, my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009) stopped working.  It would not even boot up.  I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store where they ran some diagnostics and told me that my hard drive had failed.   They said they could replace it for around $160 (labor and parts) or I could replace the drive myself and then have them install the operating system for free.  This sounds like a much cheaper option.
What I am wondering is can I buy any hard drive, or does it have to be apple specific in some way?  Does anyone have any recommendations on which hard drive to buy?  Will I need any other special tools to do this?
    Thanks.

Here's some great repair instructions for you: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15%22_Unibody_2.53_GHz_Mid_2009
There's no such thing as an Apple specific hard drive. Just be sure that it has the same connector as the one you're replacing.

  • SSD on MacBook Pro 9,2 issue with hibernation

Hi all, I have a MacBook Pro 9,2 model 13 inches with 16GB of ram and OSX 10.8.5.
I have installed an SSD internal disc replacing the original one.
I have noticed now that once the Mac goes into deep sleep (hybernation), with battery below 3 percent, when i restart the Mac/power back it, the OSX will get the menu of Apple Mail and Apple Safar missing/gone.
I have already took the Mac to a local official Apple store. They check the OSX and as I did not find any problem with a clean installation, they said that problem was the SSD model (it was an Adata SX 910 512GB SSD).
I have decided to buy than a brand new SSD. I got a Samsung Evo SSD 1TB internal 2,5 inches.
I have installed and again I get the same problem.
So at this point problem migh be either the MacBook Pro motherboard or the Mac SSD/HD internal interface cable?
    Anything to say or suggest???

    UPDATE:
I took the Mac to a local authorized Apple store. Doing a hardware check-up did not find any problem.
As it happens to the same issue 3 months ago, the technican suggested that problem is between the SSD itself and how Mountain Lion and my MacBook Pro manage the cache during the wake-up, after being into a hybernation state.
I said to him that I have already replaced an Adata SX-512GB with a Samsung EVO 1TB SSD but this did not solved the problem....
The only workaround in my case is to re-start the Mac in safe mode once. This will clean up the corrupted cache and after that a new booth will bring back the OSX to its normal state.
I am still NOT so happy with this solution but better than nothing:-)
    Anyone has something to say?
    Pleeeease....?

  • SSD Upgraded MacBook Pro 2011 freezes, hangs, until SSD is no longer recognized

    Hello.
Enough with the small talk. I have MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 with Lion that I upgraded with a 128GB Vertex 4 SSD about 8 months ago. I moved the original HDD into the optical bay and slipped the Vertex 4 into its place. Everything was all good and well until about a month ago when my computer started freezing and hanging (I'm not exactly sure what the difference is or if they're interchangeable words). To be more descriptive, I would have some applications open and it would randomly freeze, leaving me with a rainbow wheel I could control. The computer would then be essentially unresponsive other than the ability to click between apps, but if I did it a couple times everything would become completely unresponsive and I would be left with the spinning pinwheel. At first I thought the computer would right itself, but it stayed like that for 30 minutes one time, with the fan ending up blowing as hard as it could and the temperature of the computer becoming quite warm. The only thing I would be able to do at that point was to hold the power button to force restart the computer. Then the whole process would happen again, once more than 10 times a day. It didn't seem like the hanging was due to intensive use of the computer; sometimes I would literally just have one window open browsing the interwebs and it would give up on me, and other times it wouldn't happen until I had a billion tabs open streaming tv shows on every single one.
At its very worst, I had to hard reset the computer yet again, but when it booted up the SSD was no longer recognized. It was as if I unplugged and removed it so there was nothing in the primary bay and I just turned the computer on. So it booted to the that thing with the options: recover from time machine backup, reinstall Lion, get help online, or disk utility. However, the SSD does not appear in the disk utility, I can't reinstall Lion to it (because it's not an option), and I can't use the SSD as a startup disk (also because it's not an option). I was completely sure it was a faulty SSD so I sent it to OCZ, who then crushed my hopes and told me there was nothing wrong with the drive.
My hunch after several hours of digging throgh other forums is that something is wrong with my logic board, but I'm obviously posting this because I don't have any confidence in my hunch and would rather have some feedback before I go splurging on a diagnosis or - oh no! - another logic board.
    Thanks in advance, maybe.

As I mentioned I sent it back to them, and they replied with this:
"I would like to inform you that the RMA drive you sent back to us is no trouble found. Hence we will ship the same unit back to you.
Below is all the actions were performed on your drive.
    •        Writes every block on the drive many times.
    •        Verifies all data written.
    •        Reads every block on the drive many times.
    •        Tracks performance during this test, and makes sure it is within expected ranges.
    •        Tracks SMART data throughout this process to ensure proper functionality and recording of info."
    Then in a later email:
"We thoroughly tested the drive on several machines. The drive has passed all testing with no faults found. The drive is functioning correctly as received. "
I am actually praying that its my SSD or a broken SATA cable (no chance) because those are relatively cheap.
    Any ideas?

  • Installing a SSD on MacBook Pro

    Hi
I'm planning on installing a SSD on my MacBook Pro, purchased August 2011. Can anyone point me to the correct kind of disk I should buy? I have found various on Crucial's website, however they all seem slightly different - I recall Crucial being a decent make to buy from but can anyone back that up?
    Thankyou.

I've found the Crucial M4 SSD to be a great option for my primary boot disk in my mac-mini server.  However; you MUST make sure that it's running the v0309 firmware.  Here's my experience:
I had a 'spinning beachball' issue with my Crucial M4 2.5" 256GB SSD, and found the following fix.  NOTE: Do NOT update Firmware to the most recent version released 04/2012 (000F).  Make sure to have your SSD backed up prior to update, unless of course you're trying to re-load.
    ========
The SSD firmware version is stored on the SSD itself so the upgrade does not need to be carried out on the system the SSD will be used in. The easiest way to upgrade the firmware is by connecting the SSD to a system that has a CD drive.
If this is not possible, you can follow these steps to create a bootable USB flash drive and upgrade the firmware from that.
    1. Connect an empty USB flash drive
    2. Download rEFIt-syslinux from the link below. This will allow your USB drive to be recognized as a startup volume by the Mac.
    http://blog.io101.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rEFIt-Syslinux.dmg_.zip
    3. Mount the dmg. This will mount two volumes called 'rEFIt' and 'SYSLINUX'
    4. Open a Terminal and take a note of which volume is which with the command <diskutil list>
e.g. /dev/disk1 for the USB drive and /dev/disk2 for the dmg
    5. Unmount (NOT eject) both volumes, after you have confirmed the two new volumes (e.g. disk1 & disk2):
    diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1
    diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
You should get a message saying you were successful
    6. Copy the dmg onto the USB drive:
    dd if=/dev/disk2 of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m
You should get a message detailing the number of records in and out and number of bytes transferred
    7. Eject both:
    diskutil eject /dev/disk1
    diskutil eject /dev/disk2
    8. Unplug and plug back in the USB drive and mount the SYSLINUX volume
    9. Download the firmware version 0309 for the M4 SSD here:
    http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/0309/Crucialm4_0309.zip
    10. Unzip and mount the firmware ISO and go into the folder BOOT, then ISOLINUX
    11. Copy the contents into the SYSLINUX volume
    12. Delete the existing file syslinux.cfg and rename ISOLINUX.CFG to syslinux.cfg
    13. Reboot your mac and hold the option key to select a boot volume and select the eEFIt volume, then choose the "Boot legacy OS SYSLINUX' option
    14. Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

  • Samsung SSD in Macbook Pro, slow boot.

So I bought an 256GB Samsung 830 SSD for my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 2.66Ghz 15"). Anyway, I installed it tonight and I've been having a lot of problems with it as an internal drive. I had been using a 750GB WD Black for a long time and it's worked great. So first, I put the SSD in the Internal, and put the Mountain Lion Install USB in, and it would never install. I could format the drive using the USB Disk, but I couldn't install it. I kept getting an error about downloading extra components. Well I put it in an External Firewire enclosure and put the WD back in the computer, and ran the ML installer from inside Mountain Lion. Lo and behold, from Firewire, it boots up very fast and everything. So once it was all installed and setup using the external, I put the SSD inside the computer. Now, it takes about 2 minutes on the Apple screen, then I get a cursor for a few seconds, then no Apple, and a spinning grey pinwheel that never goes away. The WD HDD has been working beautifully the past year and given the SSD works great externally, i'm not sure what the deal is. I've reset the NVRAM, and SMC. So when I boot from my WD HDD in the External, it boots fine. So I went to System Prefs and tried to set the SSD as the startup disk. It won't let me, says something about the Bless tool.  Any thoughts as to what is going on? I hope the SSD isn't bad, but since it works great outside the computer but not in, i'm wondering what's going on.
    Thanks!

Also some more background: When I got the 750 WD over a year ago (about a year and a half) my computer got all sorts of freezes. Well I narrowed it down to the 1.7 Firmware. So I downgraded to the 1.6 Firmware and it fixed my problem. So I was running the 1.6 Firmware until this July, when I had to take my computer to get the Logic Board replaced (Well, screen was first but the Geniuses messed up, so they had to put a new logic board in) and the firmware is now 1.7, but I haven't had any problems with the drive since. That goes for Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. So old logic board wouldn't work with 1.7, new logic board did. I'm wondering if it is the firmware giving me fits, because if so i'll just send the drive back because there's no use running at 1.5Gbps when the drive is capable of far beyond that.
