SSD on MBP early 2011.

Hello to everybody!
I want to upgrade my MBP by installing of a SSD instead of optical drive.
Please help me to choose the best of SSD that fits to my model.
I've read a few test and made a short list of SDD. Here it is:
Plextor PX-256M5P
Corsair CSSD-N240GBGTX_BK
OCZ VTX4-25SAT3_256G
OCZ is the fastest one by tech spec, but I have read somewhere that OCZ SDD's doesn't fit to MBP as well as it kills of MBP's motherboard or something like that.
Is that true?
So please help to chose one of these 3 model or advise me an other model.
Thanx a lot.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Pesronally, I have and recommend the Crucial m4 series for Mac users. They just 'play well' with Macs and you can update the firmware on a Mac, unlike some other brands with which you need to use a Windows machine to update firmware.
It's not the very fastest drive around - but quite a few of us around here have them and have had no problems with the drives.
If the other models that you mention fit the MacBook Pro form factor, I'm sure that they would work. But I'd take a look at the Crucial m4 256GB SSD - the price/performance ratio is very good.
Go to the Crucial site and look around. You can usually save a few dollars by shopping at Amazon, Newegg, etc.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • SSD in MBP early 2011 optical drive

i have an i7 macbook pro that has been very tired lately from video editing and photoshop
i have a 500 gb hdd that i want for random files (current hard drive)
i want to run adobe premiere, photoshop and larger files from the ssd
i will be putting the ssd in the optical drive of the MBP, leaving the hdd in its place
how can i leave my old hard drive in and tell my computer to now boot from the new ssd ?
also can i just drag and drop premiere/lightroom/photoshop from current drive into ssd once completed

First off, I would NOT put the SSD in the optical bay - MacBook Pros MUCH prefer to have the boot disk in the hard drive bay - where it's supposed to be. A lot of people have had trouble with trying to boot from a storage device in the opti-bay. It may work for a while, but it usually gives you problems down the road.
So just put the SSD in the standard hard drive bay, put your hard drive in the optical bay and install OS X and all of your apps on your SSD; leaving your HD for storage.
When you install the SSD you can simply hold down the option key to boot from your 'old' drive in the opt-bay, format the SSD using Disk Utility and either clone your HD to your SSD or make a clean start of it and install ML on the SSD and then begin installing your apps on the SSD. If you're getting a 512GB SSD, you may just want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to the SSD. If your SSD is going to be smaller, just install everything 'fresh'.
No, you can't just drag and drop the Adobe applications. They have tons of auxiliary files and folders that are stored all over your drive.
Oh, and after you have your SSD prepared as a boot disk, you can simply go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select it as the boot disk.
    Call back with any questions...

  • After EFI Firmware update 2.3, MBP Early 2011 will not boot. During restart it all went wrong please help!

    Hello,
I've done an ample amount of Internet research to find an answer to this problem however nothing yet found is quite like this. I will start from the beginning.
I am traveling through Europe, and I normally live in California. When I arrived in Ireland my MBP early 2011 15 inch, began crashing constantly when I had several tabs open on Chrome and maybe one or two low CPU/Memory using applications, nothing the 8gb RAM &750gb hard drive can't normally handle. Thus I began trouble shooting.  I ran disk utility once started up and repaired both disk and permissions. Still crashing. It didn't seem like it had anything to do with a kernel panic shut down, I never would receive the usual message indicating so. After that I did an SMC reset. It was still crashing. I then upgraded the OSX from 10.8 to 10.8.4 believing it could help. It did momentarily, but then crash again. (When it crashes screen goes black suddenly and upon pressing power button does a regular boot on my single partition). I decided attempting to repair using the Internet recovery option but it appeared my MBP had not yet have it installed, so I downloaded from Apple and began installing. Here I made a mistake, I unplugged the power source as it was restarting. When the gray screen and apple appeared, the loading bar shows up as it says it will when installing the update, but when the bar fully loads it crashes every time. I've tried starting in safe mode, which then loads but never goes further (I let it stand for two hours such as that and nothing). Then I decided to allow the MBP to fully charge overnight to give it time and charge. This morning the problem has stayed the same, even with power source plugged in. Please help I need this to work.
Thank you and please ask any questions!

Your constant crashing problem is probably some type of hardware fault which no update can fix. Doing the 10.8.4 update and then the firmware update just caused further problems. you need to take thr system to a apple store to be diagnosed and fixed if cost effective.

  • Im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5

im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5.
after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie.  after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov.  i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players.  what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player.  can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export.  im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time.  please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto.  thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=j

Thank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players.  thank you again for your reply *=)

  • SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

on my macbook iphoto didn't recognise my camera or card reader after upgrading to iphoto '11,
Evenutally I went to an application called Image Capture which I seem to have already.  This read the camera contents.  I selected the images I wanted and then imported them into iphoto which was one of the options given.  It worked.  God knows why one has to go through two steps.  But I'm feeling pretty triumphant. This may help you if you haven't already sorted it.

Well, I ran the progran anyway, TechTool that is and looked for updates within the program and it said I was running the latest version 3.1.3. I ran the program and it crashed. I was the crash test dummy.

  • How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?

Had since May/June last year i5 13" and only since I applied all updates few weeks ago it seems to be louder than it was before?
It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?
    None.
The machine should only make noise if the Superdrive is being used or the CPU's heavily used, going by my Early 2011 17".

It's possible it wasn't installed correctly and/or the case is slightly off so it's resonating the hard drive vibrations.
Make sure you have a internet connection (don't move) and reboot the machine holding the d key down like forever and Hardware Test will run.
Backup your data off the machine, if the hard drive dies under 1 year or three years with Applecare, then go get a new one. else you can replace it yourself with a better one and not void your warranty if you don't break anything doing so. Add more RAM while your at it.

As you know Mac's are made by hand by young Chinese women working 12 hour shifts performing the same function every 7 seconds for only $1.20 a hour. They live 7 to a box room and have to pay 70¢ a meal.
All in all I would say they are very tired, and it's possilbe a few defects made it to your machine.

  • Downloading ML over 80 min's......how long will this go on???  MBP early 2011 running 10.7.3

downloading ML over 80 min's......how long will this go on???  MBP early 2011 running 10.7.3

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

  • Does Mac osx 10.8.2 support FDE SSD drive on early 2011 MBP?

  • MBP early 2011 battery life

I have the early 2011 release of the 17" MBP (8gig ram, 2.2ghz quad i7, 500 gig harddrive) and it seems like the battery life has just been cut inhalf. It lasts me about 3 and a half hours from just general use. Is my battery faulty? Really appriciate any feed back

That battery looks pretty good, capacity is really strong for so many charge cycles, but the voltage looks low, would expect it to be in the 11.5 to 12.5 volt range and you are showing 11.27 volts. A little low but not critical.
How have you been handling that battery with respect to discharge/charge?  While Apple has a lot of material talking about periodic deep discharge to shutdown and charge as a means of calibrating the battery, in reality that does not calibrate the battery itself.  That only serves to calibrate the charge reporting circuitry built in to Lithium-technology batteries.  In fact, the Battery University, an independent group testing batteries, has shown that repeated deep discharge behavior significantly shortens Lithium battery lifetimes.  The optimum balance of use (discharge) and line-connection seems to be around 50% discharge before charge.  Deeper reduces cycle life very fast, lower discharge makes for a very high cycle life but why buy a portable?
Anyway, just some thoughts.  Use of high intensity applications, including other operating systems, looks like it is degrading the charge time but the battery itself looks healthy.
Just keep using it, perhaps try not discharging below 50% for a while and see how it behaves for your.

  • Garbled display at startup when connecting to External Monitor - MBP Early 2011.

    Hi,
When i connect my Early 2011 MBP to an external display i get a garbled display at startup.
I then have to disconnect the hdmi cable to the external monitor, after which the display clears up (on the laptop) and then when i reconnect the external monitor, it works fine. The problem with this process is that i have to do it each time i start/boot my laptop with the external display connected. The display mode is currently set to mirror displays if that helps.
Would appreciate any advice users with this kind of set up can provide. Thank you in advance.

    Welcome!!
It could be that you are using the external in "mirrored mode" with the res set above the max res for the MBP screen. On my Late 2007 MBP, the F7 key toggles between mirrored mode and "spanning" (or "extended desktop") mode and System preferences will let you set the two displays independently. I use an external monitor in spanning mode and have not experienced a problem as I have the internal display prefs set to a comfortable res for its hardware.

  • Apple care protection for MBP early 2011

Apple care came with TechTool Deluxe but my early 2011 MBP came with Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, Tech Tool states that it has not been fully tested with Lion. Short of buying a new copy, is there a way to get Tech Tool for Lion?
    Thanks

  • I had to restore my MBP early 2011 and when i reinstalled lion i didnt have Ilife 11 how can i get it back?

Ok more deatails, i bought a MBP 13' early 2011 model and it came it ilife 2011 on it. when i upgraded to lion it was there and then one day the hard drive gave out on me so i had to erase it completely and reinstall lion. when i did that i didnt have i life 2011 as expected so how can i get that back? would the Application install disc that came in the box work?

You can most certainly try running the bundled app installer off the 10.6 machine specific disks, however I think it's going to barf on you.
You then use Pacifist from CharlesSoft to extract your god given right to free iLife and place it back onto your 10.7 drive, run the update and it should get updated.

  • No on-board audio on 15" MBP - early 2011

    Hi,
Hardware: Macbook Pro early 2011, Core i7, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD
    Software: OSX Lion 10.7.2
Since yesterday my MBP speakers are not showing any audio available. Whenever I click the audio buttons on the keyboard, it shows the audio increase/decrease with a cross on the audio button showing that no onboard-audio is available for the system. I have searched Apple Communities for the possible causes and tried everything, save re-installing the OS / updates, e.g. killing coreaudiod application, reboot, repair permissions, starting in safe mode, deleting BezelServices preference files, connecting / dis-connecting a headphone etc.
One last thing, when I connect the headphone, the output audio starts working. But as soon as it is disconnected, the on-board audio goes away.
Could anyone please suggest the possible cause? I also use VMWare Fusion, MS Office for Mac 2011, Skype, Trillian etc, so not sure if one of them could be the cause of this.
    Thanks for the help,
    Mayank

    Hi,
I again see this issue happening on my machine. It started suddenly after my MBP had a kernel panic (the machine froze and I had to push the power button for a few seconds to switch the machine off and then restart). Since then the sound is not there and the icon in the menu bar is shown "grayed out".
Per my earlier try, I re-installed the MacOSX10.7.2 Combo update but it did not work. I also tried to reset the PRAM and NVRAM (per suggestion from TheSmokeMonster) and it did nothing apart from taking me to Mac OSX Utilities page from where I just restarted.
However, I found out that occassionally the sound comes back (for a few seconds) when running youtube videos. However the problem is still existing.
Any suggestions on fixing this will be appreciated.
EDIT: attaching the current audio midi setup screenshot
