You may want to use a larger test size. Some controllers have up to 256MB onboard cache memory that may interfere with the results.
I got the Toshiba SSD in my T400 and numbers were just a bit higher - around 200 read and 190 write (sequential),  but I do not have the benchmark anymore to give you the break down.
Also you may want to look at AS SSD benchmark tool (http://alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?cat_id=4) as most other benchmark tools out there are not specifically designed for SSD but rather for HDDs.

  • Feb 2009 T500, SSD performance problems

I just bought an Intel X25-M 80GB drive (with the updated 8820 firmware) for read only database data files.  I installed an eSata ExpressCard 34 and put the drive in a Rosewill enclosure.  All of these items are rated at 3.0 Gb/s SATA speeds.  But, when I benchmarked the drive it flatlines at around 130 MB/s.  Oddly close to the SATA 1 or UDMA 6, so I looked into the device manager under "SCSI/Raid controllers" and found my SATALink controller.  It reads that the "Host Link Speed" is 3.0 Gb/s, but the current transfer mode is "Ultra DMA 6".  Is there a reason my new T500 laptop isn't able to run at the full speed of the ExpressCard?  I was looking forward to those 250 MB/s reads I've been reading about.

anti00Zero, thank you for your replies.  I have figured out what is going on with my situation.  It turns out that the SI processor chip on the eSata expressCard has a maximum throughput of 130 MB/s.  There is one other option that would provides a throughput of 200MB/s, but it costs $299.  It's not likely they will sell many of those cards, when one that provides 130 MB/s costs only $45.  In any event, I'll probably end up using the Intel X25 on my desktop because I dont want to have a $400 SSD go to waste at 130 MB/s.  Lenovo T500 is working great.

  • Sharing iPhoto Library from HD on iMac with SSD/HD

I'm looking for guidance on how to share the iPhoto library among users on a single iMac from the HD drive, as opposed to the SSD.  The shared folder appears to only extend to the SSD and I'd prefer to set up the machine so photo content resides on the HD.  I'm also still exploring the possibilities of restricting some user's levels of access.  I've seem helpful threads suggesting setting up a media account access and allowing other users "read" access only, which appeals to me, but I guess I need to verify that will work if the library resides on the HD drive.  If I need to allow all users full access rights, so be it.  I'm running the latest version of Mountain Lion and iPhoto (and also using the latest version of Aperture on the iPhoto library and all photos are maintained in the library (no reference photos yet, though I suppose I'd prefer not to foreclose that possibility).  Thanks in advance.

Put the Library on the HD. In your set up the HD will perform just like an external. So:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the HD.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your SSD to free up space.
Now you can share it as you wish. For Read Only access:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

  • Ssd cache performance

At this point I can only image it will help but I am trying to decide if sdd cache on the 450r is going to have a better return on performance versus a ssd drive for swap files on my VMware host. Soon to be multiple hosts.  This is not a production box but a replica site I have pieced together from some new hardware and old,.
I would like to know if anyone has any performance metrics with ssd cache.  I am looking to get 2x256GB drives in a mirror.  This is a big project since I will have all my bays filled.  I would have to find a temp location for all my replicas break my raid and rebuild everything. I am not against it, I just want to know what I am looking at for percent of performance gains.  i know it will depend on what I plan on get setting cache policy to but I am planning on write around since most of our systems are read based.
    Any info is appreciated.
Also let me know if you anyone is using iSCSI over NFS and why.  I have heard a lot about read being way faster with iSCSI but since I can't have multiple hosts on an iSCSI volume am stuck with NFS for now.

I did try eSATA as well, the WD drive was able to do 150MB/s and 149MB/s, read and write respectively. (as the QM57 chipset natively supports SATA at 3Gb/s)
The issue here is as part of the decision process to get the W510, USB 3 capability came into consideration (for having more than 1 fast external storage device).
    EDIT:
Ultimately, what I'm really after is:
    1. Have I configured something incorrectly, or misconfigured something.  Or is there's some ideal component linkage I'm missing.
    2. Is the W510's USB 3.0, at the very least, capable of delivering 2.5GT/s?
    3. I may, or may not have to file a complaint to Lenovo or BBB for misleading marketing / sales info.
    2nd EDIT:
I do thank you for suggesting eSATA.  However, if Lenovo is going to reply to this, I simply won't take "use the touchpad instead" if the trackpoint isn't working properly.

  • Performance of Modbus using DSC Shared Variables

I'm fairly new at using Modbus with LabVIEW.  Out of the roughly dozen tools and API's that can be used, for one project I'm working on I decided to try using Shared Variables aliased to Modbus registers in the project, which is a DSC tool.  It seemed like a clever way to go.  I've used Shared Variables in the past, though, and am aware of some of the issues surrounding them, especially when the number of them begins to increase.  I'll only have about 120 variables, so I don't think it will be too bad, but I'm beginning to be a bit concerned...
The way I started doing this was to create a new shared variable for every data point.  What I've noticed since then is that there is a mechanism for addressing multiple registers at once using an array of values.  (Unfortunately, even if I wanted to use the array method, I probably couldn't.  The Modbus points I am interfacing to are for a custom device, and the programmer didn't bother using consecutive registers...)  But in any case, I was wondering what the performance issues might be surrounding this API.
        I'm guessing that:
    1) All the caveates of shared variables apply.  These really are shared variables, it's only that DSC taught the SV Engine how to go read them.  Is that right?
       And I'm wondering:
    2) Is there any performance improvement for reading an array of consecutive variables rather than reading each variable individually?
    3) Are there any performance issues above what shared variables normally have, when using Modbus specifically?  (E.g. how often can you read a few hundred Modbus points from the same device?)

    Anna,
Thanks so much for the reply.  That helps a lot.
I am still wondering about one thing, though.  According to the documentation, the "A" prefix in a Modbus DSC address means that it will return an array of data, whereas something like the F prefix is for a single precision float.  When I create a channel, I pick the F300001 option, and the address that is returned is a range:  F300001 - F365534.  The range would imply that a series of values will be returned, e.g. an array.  I always just delete the range and enter a single address.  Is that the intention?  Does it return the range just so you know the range of allowed addresses?
OK, I'm actually wondering two things.  Is there a reason why the DSC addresses start with 1, e.g. F300001, instead of 0, like F300000?  For the old Modbus API from LV7, one of the devices we have that uses that API has a register at 0.  How would that be handled in DSC?
    Thanks,

  • Slow performance to read/write shared variables programatically

We are using datasocket read and write functions to read and write shared variables programatically (in the same machine) but we only achieve a performance of aprox. 200 reads/writes per second. We are using Labview 8.6 with DSC.
Is possible to get better results? That performance is normal?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Hi MMCDAT,
    I think this value can
be normal as you can see in this link:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5037
    As you can see, the
limit for datasocket depends on your Ethernet limitations, even if you as using
    it just in one PC:

  • Modbus and shared variable performance in large application

    Hi all,
I am preparing to work on an application which is going to reading from up to 500 Modbus input registers on a CompactRIO over Modbus Ethernet using the LVRT Modbus IO Server implementation.  I've put together some minor test VIs on the local network to test the Modbus connectivity and understand in the shared variable minding mechanism.
To save potential headaches in the future, do you all have any best programming/proejct management practices for using high channel count Modbus applications?  Has anyone done high channel count testing (similar to the link below) but for shared variables bound to a Modbus I/O Server?  Any caveats I should keep in mind?
Performance Benchmarks for Network Published Shared Variables

    Thanks,
    Chris
    d2itechnologies.com

If your application can deal with it I would recommend staying clear of the 'Networked Published' option.
When I started my Modbus development on cRIO....I left it enabled, and with ~100 shared variables on a 9074, the CPU was railing, and I saw a buffering behavior on the shared variables (which was not desirable in my application).
In my application I am using the old modbus library (as apposed to the new API) for cRIO to slave comms, the cRIO being the master.
I am also using the IOserver making the cRIO a slave to an external SCADA - and it passes essentially the same data arrays as I use on the modbus library for my local HMI [Not an NI product].....Which is two full Modbus frame writes (@ 120 words each, and about 60 words more for ~300 words outbound from the cRIO).
The IOserver slave was a recent addition and did not add much to the CPU load - although only 16 bytes is high speed, the balance of the total word package is at either 1 second or 3 seconds.
So, in my experince, the 'Networked Published' option adds significant CPU loading (on entery level cRIOs) YMMV.
I am huge fan of the shared variable engine (some at NI were pusing the CVT, and TCE etc...). However most of my shared variables are not the Networked Published variety (excepting local module channels) those have remained networked published for DSM (Distributed System Manager) use.

  • SLOW PERFORMANCE OF SHARED VARIABLES

    Hello,
We have developed application in LabVIEW 8.6.1 for testing mechanical equipments using cRIO 9074 (Real Time controller).
In this application we have used shared variables (Network published) for communications between Real Time controller and Host PC. All shared variables are deployed on Host PC.
Now we want to access the same application(Host PC application) from Tablet PC through wi-fi connectivity.
We have created two seperate .exe to run the application on Host PC and Tablet PC.Shrared variable response for Host PC .exe with RT controller is good, but when we run Tablet PC .exe then response is sluggish(slow).
In this case we create shared variables on Host PC (Network published) and tying to access it from Host PC and Tablet PC.
    In our application,
1)Both Host and Tablet PC operate on Windows XP.
2)Programs on Host and Tablet PC are identical.
3)Both PC's are on same subnet.
Please provide appropriate help on this issue.
    Thanks in advance....

  • W530 SSD and Memory help needed for high performance systems.

    Hi Guys,
After dealing with lots of laptops that got destroyed by daily use, our organizations is considering ordering 25 Thinkpad W530 laptops from Lenovo and we hope that they last a little longer.
Our main usage is video editing and design so we have chosen the best that Lenovo has to offer as far as hardware.
Since Lenovo charges arm and a leg for SSD and 16GB memories, we have decided to purchase these separately and upgrade ourselves.
Knowing the high need for performance, what would you recommend for 128GB SSD and 16GB memory?
The laptops are all coming with 7200 RPM drives for storage so the SSD is mainly for programs and the OS.
For the drive bay, does this part sound right to you? http://shop.lenovo.com/us/itemdetails/0A65623/460/89555ADB1CE946DA80E0E5D6FE77B164
This would be used for the HDD and the SSD would be moved to main HDD location.
Is there anything else we should know about these laptops?
Thank you in advanced for your time and all suggestions are welcomed.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  • High performance SSD for my X200 Tablet

    Hi,
I have the X200 Tablet 7450 ERG. Preinstalled in the computer is a Samsung SSD 64GB disk - but I have found no information about the form factor of the disk, and I am uncertain about what disk to get as replacement due to that (so it fits perfectly inside the machine). Just after installing the nessecarily programs and functions I use, and having a minimum of storage place for the most recent files I work on - I am left with 5-7GB of storage...
What disk can I get to increase the storage AND performance of my machine. If battery time is a little shorter, I don't care, and price don't scare me too much either.
Technical performance (as high as possible speed under all conditions without lag) and 128GB+ storage is a requirement.
Looking forward to get your recommendations!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I was in your exact situation.  I liked having an SSD, but found the small size to be rather painful.  I now have an OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD installed in my X200 Tablet.  I also have Intel SSDs in my desktops.  I know there is a 250GB OCZ, and a 160GB Intel.  Both are very, very fast, and both can be installed in the X200T.  An advantage that the latest OCZ Vertex and Intel drives have is that they have TRIM support, which helps mitigate the performance degradation issue you see in SSDs, at least under Windows 7.
Both were easy to install, although the OCZ needed a firmware update.  The X200T did not play nice with the firmware update software, and I had to drop it into my desktop to do that.
The only problem with replacing the Samsung SSD, at least the one I received, is that it's a 1.8" disk, with the appropriate mounting bracket.  Why Lenovo chose that form factor is beyond me, because the drive bay can fit a 2.5".  I was not able to find a suitable drive bracket for a 2.5" disk on Lenovo's site, but I found one relatively easily on EBay, and I assume if you call Lenovo you can order the correct part over the phone.  While I was waiting for the it to arrive, I made do with a folded piece of paper wedged in under the drive to hold it in place.  Sad, i know, but I couldn't wait, and it worked.
If you don't want to deal with the drive bracket, Intel also makes 1.8" versions of their SSDs, which as far as I know perform just like their 2.5" equivalents.  They are a bit hard to find, though.

  • [W510] - USB 3.0 SSD, poor performance.

    Help please?
I'm getting some rather poor performance on both of the USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
I have an SSD that's been tested via internal SATA II connection, capable of (sequential) read 275MB/s, and write 250MB/s. Also have a 3.5 inch WD Caviar Black 2TB SATAIII (WD2002FAEX), tested via eSATA, capable of (sequential) read 150MB/s, and write 150MB/s (think it saturated the eSATA on the W510).
However, when either of these two drives was connected via USB 3.0 (tested with three different brands of USB 3.0 enclosure), the sequential read performance was only at 85MB/s, and write was (REALLY bad) at 60MB/s (even with the SSD). This leads me to think there's a bottleneck somewhere on the W510 (because I know for certain, the USB 3.0 enclosures are capable to at least give 130MB/s read and write. The drives are also capable of performing faster than 100MB/s as well).
All drivers, BIOS, firmware are the latest. Platform is Windows 7 Ultimate - 64bit.
The NEC USB 3.0 chipset seems to be connected to PCI Express 2.0 x1 bus.  Reading on the Intel QM57 chipset spec, the PCI Express 2.0 implementation is only capable of serving 2.5GT/s (http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/qm57/qm57-overview.htm), using 8b/10b encoding (http://www.tmworld.com/article/318759-What_does_GT_s_mean_anyway_.php), that gives 2Gbps.  So I was expecting the USB 3.0 connection is capable of giving me around (not exact, as I accept there's overhead) 200MB/s.
At this point in time, a single mechanical drive (consumer level) can't quite go up to 200MB/s yet, but SSD can.  And therefore, I expected my SSD benchmark via USB 3.0 could at least give me that....sadly it wasn't the case with the W510.
This brings two questions I have for the forum:
    1. Why is my W510 USB 3.0, in combination with high performance disks and rather capable USB 3.0 enclosures, perform so poorly.
    2. If my understanding from above is correct, then isn't this "USB 3.0" feature (regardless of my benchmark result) sounds misleading?  Because the product, W510, is simply incapable of delivering a USB 3.0 experience even in "ideal" situation (limited by the 2.5GT/s).

  • New T530: same boot time after cloning HDD to SSD - what to do next to optimize performance?

    Hi,
This is my very first post here so bear with me if I have not observed any guidelines.
After I got a new T530 from Lenovo (i5-3230M, 8G RAM 1DIMM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, 1920x1080, 16GB Micro SSD SATA3, NVIDIA Optimus with 1GB), I swapped the DVD burner with the 500GB HDD and put a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro as my primary drive. I cloned all HDD contents to the SSD and removed all stuff in the HDD (I don't have a Windows 7 disk that's why I didn't do a clean install on the SSD). After these changes, I found my boot time to still be 30 seconds - which I guess is quite slow for an SSD main drive.
I've read up a fair bit on the Lenovo Community and the ThinkPad forum for solutions but have not found a conclusive answer to this problem. I guess I just want some advice from experienced users on what to do next after cloing the HDD to the SSD so that I can optimize the SSD's performance.
    1) I found the 16GB Micro SSD SATA3 is named "Lenovo_Recovery (Q". As I don't have a Windows 7 installation disk, is it possible for me to perform a clean install on my SSD C: Drive from the Recovery?
    2) If recovery is not possible, I am thinking of removing some of the bloatware(Corel burner, Nitro Pro, and many ThinkVantage utilities). But I also read somewhere that simply removing them does not help much (as opposed to a clean install). Is there anything Lenovo software worth saving (power manager maybe?)
To be sure both my TRIM and AHCI are enabled. I welcome and am grateful for inputs of other advice outside the above two questions: for example whether I should disable paging files or set paging files to the 500GB HDD disk; whether I should create a RAM disk, whether I should delete or shift system retore files, or whether I should change locations for certain temporary files.
    Many thanks for your input

You're already getting detailed advice here.  I'm just chiming it to say that the above doesn't sound quite right.
Lenovo_Recovery (Q) is normally a partition on the main drive and contains the recovery image.  It wouldn't be on the micro SSD - AFAIK.  The recovery image contains an as-shipped image of your working partitions.  Even if you used it, you wouldn't get what's considered a "clean" install (from MS media and without the Lenovo additions).  You'd get the OS as shipped - modified and added-to by Lenovo.
That micro SSD is probably part of the reason you don't see much difference in your boot times.  It caches frequently-used files and (at least once trained or pre-loaded) sort of simulates running from an SSD.  Without it your original boot time would probably have been longer.
[edit] Did you make recovery media from your HDD before removing it from the main bay.  I'm all for clean installs (how I run my T420) but that might be handy to have down the road some time.  Also you might want to pull a copy of SWTOOLS (I think that's what it's called these days...) and save it on DVD or someplace.  There are a few things you can't download from the Lenovo site (3rd-party multimedia apps, for example) that you might want to add to a clean install later. The installers are in SWTOOLS (or whatever it's called....)

  • Mixed Mac & PC PCs no longer showing up in "shared"cant add windows printer

    Hi all,
I have noticed that none of the PCs on my network at work are showing up in finder under the 'shared' section, hasnt really been a big deal, i have shortcuts to all the network folders/printers i need to access (main printer is shared from a XP machine)
but with the recent installation of an SSD drive i thought rather then clone old stuff id start fresh
installed 10.6.5 on my late 2009 Macbook, no worries
    have done all the updates.
went to print, oh thats right i need to set it up.
it is not showing the printer in the 'windows' section of add printer.. Hmm i thought, thats odd, I booted off my old drive, yep, could still print but there is nothing listed if i try to add a new printer.
jump onto a windows 7 machine, yep, there is all the PC's and macs on the network.
jump onto the iMac based 10.6 server, Hmm IT cant see any PC's or shared printers either.
now if i goto the addresses manually they mount and i can access them, but unlike windows, i can only mount volumes, i cannot mount the networked system and then select 'add this printer'
I have looked around, from editing DNS settings, changing my samba.conf file etc, nothing works.
the odd thing is that when im at home, my laptop can see the NAS, networked PC's ect no problem, so its somthing here, not this mac, but on the network.
I run an IPcop based firewall for the sole purpose of cacheing microsoft and Apple updates (I run a computer repair shop , these updates are a killer on the 'ol download allowance)
i have restarted the modem, firewall, network hubs etc, still no joy.
it was probably just over a month ago i remember adding the front counter printer to this mac on its old HDD without issue, so something in the last month has gone kaplewie.
Any suggestions are welcome but unfortunatley the network structure is a bit too involved to disconnect all systems and plug into a basic hub :/ - this setup has been working for 3 years with very little issue
what gets me, while my MAcbook is fully up to date and may be the target of blame (failed update or somthing) the iMac server has not been updated for 9 months since we put 10.6 server on it, so it wasnt not an update that caused this.
is there some odd chance that a new PC on the network maybe causing some issue?
    wow, long post.. sorry..
    any help greatly appreciated!

  • Mac Pro 2009 with SSD Problems since mavericks

I am having constant problems with my mac pro early 2009 since Mavericks. It is a standard mac pro but now has a crucial m500 ssd as the main drive.
I originally put a OWC 120gb SSD in then changed it for a 240gb OWC SSD as I blamed the SSD for my problems. Then recently I blamed OWC so bought a crucial SSD but still having all the same problems.
My list of problems (these happen 20+ times per day) I'm a web designer so use a lot of browsers and use the computer for 9+ hours per day:
Firefox is used as main browser. Every so often pages load but without loading the style sheet shortly followed by pages not loading at all. Then if I type an address and hit return it does nothing. Then opening Chrome pages work for a couple of seconds then that stops working too. Sometimes FF and Chrome don't work but safari does sporadically.
Chrome is unusable really as it crashes all the time.
During all these events, if I open certain apps (randomly) e.g. openeing system prefs it will 'fail to open' and show the crash report and reopen option which just continues with another crash report. At this stage a reboot is essential
Possibly related...if I wake computer from sleep, it takes about 5-8 seconds before I can do anything. I can see everything, move mouse etc... but if I try and click on an open tab it won't work until I wait about 8 seconds.
I don't think it is sleep related though as these browser problems happen after a reboot and no sleep. Hard disk is set to never sleep.
Here is a recent system prefs crash report.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Can't fully restore my Time Machine/Time Capsule Backup to my newly-wiped SSD/HDD

On receiving my leased, Bootcamp-enabled MacBook Pro, I saw that there were no installation discs for Windows or OSX, and that there were 2 partitions (or so I thought) for Mac and Windows: 375GB each. As I produce music using software in both OSs, I wanted to create a 185GB FAT-32 partition to store my sound samples, projects etc. I attempted to create this partition by resizing (halving) my Bootcamp partition in OSX Disc Utility. The first time I attempted it, resizing was possible, but after the new partition was created, I had problems booting and so had to edit my GPT in order to boot again. Once ‘fixed,’ (by deleting the new partition) I couldn’t resize the Bootcamp partition to fill the 185GB gap, and that 185GB was ‘lost.’ The Bootcamp partition was 375GB but its used space + free space added up to 190GB
So the other day, I tried to follow what I thought was a more logical approach, which I was *sure* would work. My plan was to:
Use Windows Backup (and/or Clonezilla, or Disk Utility) to store an image of my Windows partition.
Uninstall/wipe the Windows partition using BootCamp Assistant, creating 1 big OSX partition
Use BootCamp Assistant to re-partition the HDD for Windows, OSX and ‘shared,’ and then re-install Windows, leaving 175GB for shared music production files
Restore the image/backups (approx 70GB) and carry on as before.
During the process, I deemed that this wasn't possible on my system for a variety of reasons: My laptop already had 4 partitions (Windows Recovery, Bootcamp/Windows, Mac Recovery HD, and Mac) and my understanding is that the MBR of my SSD only supports 4 partitions in its Bootcamp + OSX-compatible state. I have never got this '5 partition' strategy working.
I was unable to restore my Windows partition after re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. As a solution, I then decided to wipe the OSX partition (at that point the only 'visible' partition on the disk) and in-place re-install Mac OS X, with a view to installing Windows after OSX.
Once I wiped my hard drive, however, restoring my files and settings, didn't work as expected. Time Machine backups etc were inaccessible after a normal re-install. Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go. The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out. Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
I can view files/backups in Time Machine but I can't completely restore my computer to the state it was on 18th May...and 11 days without a fully-functioning laptop is really annoying. I wasn't able to ‘clean’ *or* ‘in-place’ re-install OSX using my existing settings and so I'm frustrated that Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process. Migration Assistant didn’t transfer everything. Can I get things back to the way they were?
    Things that haven’t restored correctly:
None of my icon customisations at the top of the screen were there (DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, Kuvva, the way battery icon was displayed
    Safari: Top Sites, History, Plugins
Logic Pro: Downloaded sounds, presets (10+GB), recent items, plugin settings/AU manager
Mail: Settings (and I’m assuming, the downloaded/cached mail: 7GB)
    Trash can: Empty
All recent item lists apart from cloud-based services like Evernote, Notes, contacts
    iTunes library
    Dock view and settings
    Settings for most programs
And I'm sure there are more!

Thanks Pondini; I'd hoped you'd reply. I'm still getting used to this tech, no can't even quote here.

If you mean you installed OSX and created a user account, then couldn't find the backups, that's because they're treated as being from a different disk, until you either transfer your data or do a manual "associatedisk".  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #19 for details.
Yet to try the associatedisk...didn't realise this was possible until reading your guides. The explanation makes sense now. On installing OSX it said transfers were possible after installation, so I put off transferring as the first 'restore' had frozen on 10%, thinking I'd do it afterwards.
Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go
That sounds like damaged/corrupted backups. Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

You mean, on the Mac OS X Utilities menu on the Recovery HD?  I've never heard of that.  That should always be selectable, so you can specify where the backups you want are located.  Nothing happens when you click it?  Can you click the other options there?
Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
Also sounds like directory or file problems on the backups.
This is just when I go into Time Machine/Star Wars. I can't just go to the latest backup and click "Restore" (which I assume would just restore my whole computer/HDD, although I have no experience in this). I can only select files and restore them individually.
Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process.
There has never been any such thing.
I bought into the Time Machine 'hype' and thought it was an easy and reliable tool, but was a lot more difficult to do a full restore than I thought.
    Trash can: Empty
Correct.  Time Machine (like most backup apps) don't back up trash.
All the rest should have been backed-up and restored.  Do you see them in the backups?  What, if anything, was excluded from being backed-up?
As a non-native Mac user, I'm not sure where all these things are stored...perhaps in Library? I think that not having the full hard-drive just restore annoyed me...I felt that backing up my whole hard drive every hour should've allowed me to restore everything to as it was without a hitch, and when it didn't work I just tried a few things before posting on here.
If repairing the backups finds and fixes things, you might want to try again.
    Gonna try now
If not, and if you can see the missing items via the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you should be able to restore them selectively.
