SSD sleep and iMovie issues

Hi everyone, I asked this question on the iMovie forum but think it might be relevant here as well.
I have installed an OWC SSD in the 2nd optical bay on my Mac Pro. OS and only a few apps on the SSD, less than 30% used. All my photos and videos are on a 2 drive RAID 0 where they were before installing the SSD. Before the SSD iMovie would launch and load projects etc. in 11 sec first time then 6 sec subsequently. Now it takes 40 seconds to load the projects etc. every time I launch it. (The app launches in a second or two it's just loading the content that takes the time)
Photos on the RAID open in PS5 quickly, just iMovie is slow. (The iMovie library is about 400GB)
There are some other issues as well: When waking from sleep the computer often hangs in weird ways.
Sometimes I can launch, say, Safari but it won't load a page and if I launch iTunes it will try to launch then stop then everything is unresponsive needing a hard reboot. Other times after waking from sleep nothing will respond. I have "put hard drives to sleep" unchecked.
Could this all have something to do with the drive being plugged into the mother board? Is there a difference between that and the normal drive bay connectors?
Final bit of info..I still have the old boot drive installed but in the optical drive bay with the SSD. I have renamed it "Old Macintosh HD". I deleted iMovie and all the preference files from it.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Hi Hatter, The home user account is on the SSD but all content (video and photos) is on the RAID.
I did a clean install of SL on the SSD.
I seem to have resolved the iMovie issues by one or more actions including demounting the old Macintosh HD, deleting empty projects and event folders in the movies folder in the home folder and ditching the iMovie prefs.
The sleep issues remain though.
When waking from sleep if I click on Safari it just bounces in the dock and never opens. It stops bouncing and basically gives up after about a minute. Same if I click on iTunes.
I can click around the desktop but the selected actions just don't happen. If I choose retart nothing happens and I have to do a hard reboot.
Last time I woke it from sleep though I waited at least 10 seconds before trying to do anything and it was OK.
Also it seems as though the HDs are spinning down when not in use even though that pref is unchecked.

  • 10.5.3 Sleep and shutdown issues

I'm truly confused about the current issues I'm dealing with since my choice to upgrade to 10.5.3...
Since I upgraded, everything seemed to be fine until I closed my macbook and moved it into another room just to open it again. What happened? Nothing! That's the problem! The normally pulsing LED on the release button now stares at me with a constant, unchanging glow. I tried to open it and nothing happens! I was forced to hard boot my machine by holding down the power button only to be stuck with a lengthy boot back into the OS. Once I FINALLY got back to my desktop, I was able to hold option-apple-eject to put the macbook into sleep mode. The LED pulsed once again! I thought my troubles were over! Unfortunately, I was wrong. I figured it might be a good idea to cleanly shut down the machine and reboot it to reset the environment. My macbook never shutdown completely! It sat still with a black screen appearing to be off with the LED again.. Constantly glowing, unchanged... no pulsing... I let the machine sit there and do it's thing for several minutes and it never shut down... I was forced to hold the power button down to shut it off once again. Once the desktop arrived, I then tried again to do the apple-option-eject to place it into sleep and it gave me the unchanging, staring glow... Hard boot? AGAIN? What's going on here?
The most confusing part of this situation is it repeated the same symptoms after reinstalling the operating system from a complete erase and install. The only update I performed was the 10.5.3 combined upgrade after installing bare-bones Leopard from the installation DVD.
My kingdom for the ability to install 10.5.2 again! I've never had these issues before and I'm beginning to lose the faith I once had in the stability of this amazing operating system.

I've had the problem where my MBP doesn't wake up from sleep when I closed it recently. I think the problem is that when you close it, it writes all the information to the hard drive so that it can "hibernate". I've found (especially if I have a lot of things open) that if I open it too soon after closing, the best thing to do is close the lid until the light goes from solid to pulsing. This lets you know that the computer is actually asleep. After that, it should be ok to open the lid.

  • Sleep and Shutdown issues after upgrading to Windows 10

Hi there,So I'm having issues with sleep and shutdown after I upgraded to Windows 10, the laptop won't go to sleep or shutdown properly. The screen turns off, but the power LED stays on and the fan as well. If I chose sleep it won't wake up no matter what I try, and I'd have to perform a hard shutdown everytime.Any solution for this problem? Thanks.

**I have posted this in another area with the same issue** YES!!!!! A Solution that worked.  Spread the news.  It has to do with the Intel Virtualization Tehnology. Didn't know what that was until this issue came up in Windows 10. First, find out if this is your issue.   1. I installed the 'Intel Processor Identification Utility' directly from Intel.2. After installation, open the program and go to the 'CPU Technologies' tab.3. If it says 'YES' for Intel Virtualization Tehnology, proceed. Solution...(at least on my system) 1. The next thing you have to do is go into the BIOS.  If you have not done this before, proceed at your own risk.         You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (for me I hit F10 at the HP screen)2. Within the BIOS, there is an 'Advanced Options' section3. In this section there is a line for 'Intel Virtualization Tehnology' and it will say enabled or disabled.  My computer said disabled.4. If this is the case, change the option to 'ENABLED'; then SAVE and EXIT from the BIOS.   The Computer will restart and from that point on Shut Down, Sleep, etc. has worked.  WOW this was a frustrating issue. Almost went back to Windos 8.  I take no credit for this solution, I pieced it together from other posts on this issue.  Hope this helps.

  • X220 resume from sleep and boot issues

This is driving me crazy! I have an X220 with Windows 8 and UEFI boot installed.
It all started when I first installed Windows 8 a few months ago which required me to update my BIOS to the latest version. The installation process often got stuck when booting from the Installation CD (the round circle stopped spinning, the display was at full brightness). Eventually I managed to boot into the Installer (when the boot logo doesn't get stuck, the display is then dimmed to minimum).
I was quite happy to have a superfast lightweight OS which booted in an instant.. When suddenly it started to get stuck when booting (same issue with the boot logo not spinning anymore). This happens quite randomly, but I often manage to boot (maybe 2-3 times a week, I don't boot often though..). Now, the booting hangs are less of an issue for me but more often that that it fails to resume from sleep. The LEDs flash and then it instantly drops to sleep mode again (well at least the sleep/moon LED is active). This happens quite often as I sleep/resume up to 5-10 times a day (changing lecture rooms, meeting rooms, save battery when the lectures are boring, ...)
Now after researching and spending hours in debugging this issue, it seems that I'm not the only one having this (or a similar) issue, but often without any definitive solution being specified.
This is what I have already tried:
    * Upgrade BIOS and SSD firmware to latest
    * Install/update latest drivers
    * Mess around with BIOS options
    ** UEFI/Legacy First options
    ** Intel Virtualization/vt-d
    ** Others..
I know based on other threads that I'm not the only one experiencing exactly these issues. Has anyone managed to fix this?
    Thank's in advance
    Fabio Scala

I had a similar issue, as soon as a described even a little bit of it to warrenty support they sent someone to swap the board
It seems thats the only fix, its been fine since

  • Sleep and Battery issues-- Back to Tiger?

(Half of this relates to a thread of mine called "Dead Battery?"-- I tried all the fixes proposed and it's still unclear if my battery is fine or dead.)
I'm having battery and sleep problems that started after installing Leopard and I'm wondering whether I should:
    1) Go back to Tiger and see how things are.
    2) Format and install Leopard again (I didn't do that the first time)
    3) Do something else.
    The details are:
My battery shows 0%, the computer recognizes it's connected to the AC adapter, but "Battery is not charging" shows in the drop down. Coconut says the current charge is 0 of a maximum of 4164mAh (Apple System Profiler agrees with those stats). Yesterday it said my capacity was at 94% of it's original, but I pulled the battery last night to reset the PMU and now it can't give me the original capacity. It also listed 111 loadcycles, but now (post PMU reset) it and profiler say 0 Cycles. My battery was working fine the day before and would give me a few hours of use on a full charge.
My computer has also had issues coming back from sleep. The screen will stay sometimes stay dark, but repeatedly holding the power button will suddenly bring it back. I was using it this morning, closed it for five minutes, and when I came back it would make a noise (the mechanical "HD waking up noise"), give me 4 seconds of my screen, and then the screen would go very dark (but not completely out). If I held the power button I could get 4 more seconds. This repeated until I ctrl-apple-power and it restarted just fine. I've never seen my machine do this before.
I have reset the PRAM and the PMU and tried different power adapters.

I use SoundHound, had no such problem.

  • Sleep and maintenance issues

I understand that the Mac will perform routine maintenance at night, if I do not allow the computer to sleep. But suppose I select "never" for computer sleep but check off "allow hard disc to sleep when possible". Will the computer still perform the maintenance? Also, I would like to know what maintenance is performed. Is it everything shown in the ONYX freeware?

But suppose I select "never" for computer sleep but check off "allow hard disc to sleep when possible". Will the computer still perform the maintenance
    Yes.
Also, I would like to know what maintenance is performed. Is it everything shown in the ONYX freeware?
No, the only tasks that are run automatically are the periodic scripts.
    See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
FWIW, The other scripts run by OnyX, Cocktail, Yasu, etc., are not considered to be a part of a normal maintenance regimen, though many people use them that way. Cleaning caches, deleting rotated logs and the rest are tasks that would be recommended as troubleshooting steps, and running them can slow performance (startup, application launches...) until these caches rebuild themselves.

  • 10.4.9 update, sleep and QT issues

After the update it takes several tries to get the computer to go into deep sleep using the keyboard commands.
Also in the finder viewing some video the controls are missing and replaces by a mess of odd lines, the playback still works.

Since upgrading to 10.4.9 (from 10.4.8), last week,
    1) I am getting erratic (wired, mighty) mouse behavior. Shows up as spontaneous, unwanted cursor-leaps OUT OF Safari browser window, most often to upper left (origin) of desktop, but occasionally to random locations on the right side of the desktop. But I have to figure out where the cursor disappeared-to, by wiggling it around, then reposition it where I want it.
    2) I have had fairly regular disconnects in iChat. Occasionally I get a message saying that AIM is not available. But the party at the other end just sees that I am (suddenly) not online. Even after relaunching iChat. I strongly suspect that this is related to 10.4.9. It has NEVER happened while using 10.4.8.
If I could, I would back-out to 10.4.8 but - you guessed it - I did not back it up.
Any suggestions, or similar observations from anyone else out there?

  • System sleep and shut down not working after upgrade to windows 10

HiI upgraded my OS from win 8.1 to win 10.After the upgrades the system shutdown and sleep are not working properly. It's like when I shutdown/sleep the system ,the screen shuts down but the power key keeps glowing and also the battery keeps draining. So eachtime I have to foercefully press the power button to shutdown the system. I have updated the display driver . Please someone  suggest, what to do ?

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and seen that you are having issues with your HP Pavilion 15-n260tx Notebook PC and the Sleep/Shut down options. It sounds like you might be having an issue with one of the features of Windows called Hybrid Shutdown that is used for the Fast Startup feature.  Here are a couple of links for you about Fast Startup, Hybrid Shutdown and How to Shut down your Notebook completely. They also have some troubleshooting steps in them.   1. Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10.2. Shut Down Computer in Windows 10. If those do not work, I do have some more documentation for you to read and try.  1. Shut down (turn off), sleep, or hibernate your PC - This document is from Microsoft. 2. HP Notebook PCs - Managing Power Options (Windows 8)3. HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 8) Sometimes a BIOS Update will work. You can update all of your drivers by going to the HP Driver's website or by using the HP Support Assistant. On the Driver's page there is not an update for the Windows 10 Column, but there was an update that just came out under Windows 8.1 on Aug 7, 2015 that should work for your Notebook.  Another fix that may work is to Run the Troubleshooter. Please follow this link to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.   I hope this helps!  Have a great day!

  • 990FXA-GD80 sleep and post-sleep issues

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded to an MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard paired with an AMD 8320 Black Edition CPU. My previous set-up was with an MSI 790FX-GD70 and AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition. I also put in a new PSU (see below).
    Full spec
    Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80
    Bios: Version 13.1
VGA: Asus DirectCU II TOP Radeon HD 7970
    PSU: Seasonic X-Series 650W (54A 12V rail)
CPU: AMD FX 8320 Black Edition 8 Core Processor Socket AM3+
    MEM: 8GB Mushkin DDR3 PC3-12800 Redline Ridgeback (7-9-8-24) Dual Channel kit (2x4GB)
    Boot HDD: Corsair P128 128GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD
    Storage HDD: 1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1
    COOLER: Noctua NH-C12P
    OC: None
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Home
Rather than do a complete reinstall, I simply removed all of the old drivers that I could, replaced the hardware, and let windows do its thing with the updates. Then ran LiveUpdate and cleaned up any further remnant drivers I could find. Everything seemed to work fine.
The RAM is running at auto frequency, timings and voltage - I know this is under its rated values, but I wanted to make sure everything was in good shape before mucking about with OC settings.
I'm having a few minor issues though.
When the board goes in to sleep mode after being left alone for a while, it can only be woken by hitting the power switch. After a search of these forums, I see that can be altered in the BIOS - no problem.
Once the board wakes from sleep, however, performance is extemely sluggish. Load times for games more than double, and frame rates drop to about 30-40% of where they were before.
Rebooting fixes this, but I really shouldn't have to be doing that every time the board goes to sleep.
Would updating the BIOS help with these issues (I've read a few negative comments about v 13.1)? If so, which version?
Are there some power management, or other settings, in the BIOS that are causing the RAM or CPU to only partially wake up?
How can I stop the motherboard going in to sleep mode at all? I'm pretty sure I found a BIOS setting to do this on my last board, but am missing it on this one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks (in advance).

Yea..I've seen a lot of odd stuff. I don't blame MSI, I think it's a combination of the newer UEFI BIOS, all the green power stuff, and BIOS changes to make Windows 8 compatible.  Every motherboard seems to have it's quirks these days.
You are basically doing what I do now. My computer is set to never sleep, and monitors off in 15. I normally turn my computer off manually when I'm done with it, unless I'm downloading from Steam or something...then I want it to keep running. So this "work around" has me happy.
I hear you on the clean install. It's such a pain in the butt getting all my software back in order. I literally spend a week just getting all my games downloaded from Steam, lol. I'm riding the AM3 platform until I absolutely no longer can.
The good news, our CPUs, while never being as fast as their Intel counterparts clock for clock will get faster over time as the software industry get's more and more in line with multi-core programs.  Just keep feeding them new vidoe cards.

  • Mac Pro freezes after sleep, wont shut down, and 5870 issue

    Hi,
I just got my new Mac Pro 3.33Ghz hexacore a couple of days ago and I've been having some issues with it.
    1) When waking up the comp from sleep and its been cold for a while, the Mac Pro freezes. I can still move the mouse but that's about it. So, I have to do a hard restart. But...
    2) Since last night I'm not able to turn the MP off. When I try to shut it down from the menu it closes all the apps and nothing but the background and dock shows and it gets stuck there. So I have to do a hard restart, but when pressing down the power button it just goes to sleep rather then shutting down, so only way to turn it off is to pull out the cord.
    3) And the last problem I'm having is in bootcamp. When I play games (Battlefield Bad Company 2 or Crysis) the computer freezes after 3 min or so. The screen either turns blue or black and I have to shut it down. I am able to do the hard restart in Windows 7, in fact I just have to press the power button ones and it shuts off correctly.
I'm really frustrated since in the last 2 months I've had 3 iMacs and this MP and all have had problems. My old 20in iMac has been running for a couple of years now and has never had any problem...
Also, if I have to take it to the Apple store, is there anyway a tech can come to my house? I'm tired of going to the Apple store all the time, its a big hassle taking the comp there, plus I don't feel like they're really helping me.
    Thanks for your help!

just wanted to update you guys on what the official stance of OWC is on this situation. I had the same problem like you guys. I have the 240GB OWC extreme pro SSD in my Mac Pro 3,1. When it goes to sleep, and i leave it sleeping for a day -- upon returning, it will freeze up with the spinning wheel of death.
This is what they had to say about it:
"While Sleep will work with our SSDs, there have been reports of system hangs in relation to hibernation mode which is the deep state of Sleep. We suggest not using ANY program that puts your computer into hibernation mode when using an SSD. SandForce is working on this issue and it will be addressed in a future firmware update.
Normal, automatic sleep mode functions perfectly with no issues. But if you need to try and fix the hibernation issue with your Mac revision, please Open up Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and go through the following steps:
    Type: sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
    Press: return/enter.
Type: your password when it prompts you to, then press return/enter again.
You have successfully disabled hibernation! Go ahead and exit Terminal.
Also, some have chose to use the application SmartSleep, which is free online. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26979/smartsleep
SmartSleep is an application that you can use to set the hibernation mode on your computer.
I apologize for the inconvenience. I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter and hope you will continue to bear with us as our extreme SSD product line transitions through these evolutions and unforeseen road bumps. Please let us know if there's anything else we may do to help."
--I would like to add that the OWC SSD is great. And since Downloading smart sleep and disabling deep sleep aka hibernate, the issue has been totally resolved. Im pretty sure the terminal entry works just as well. But I liked the added convenience of the other features of smartsleep. So there you go guys.

  • ILife 08 and iMovie 06 compatibility issues?

Sorry if any of this has already been covered in other threads...
Has anyone had a chance to thoroughly test the 6.04 version of iMovie (download version if you install iLife 08) and know what compatibility issues there are?
I.E. How well does iPhoto 08 play with iMovie 06, or iMovie 06 with iDVD 08. Are the third party plugins problematic with v6.04?
From what I saw at the Apple store, iPhoto08 and iDVD08 would be the only apps that I would really want since iMovie08 seems to be a step backwards and iWeb is still lacking in everything that I wanted improved. But I don't want to waste the money to discover all sorts of "gotchas" with trying to get iMovie06 to play nice with the rest of iLife08...
Also, has anyone done an install excluding iMovie08 entirely? Do you still need to download 6.04 if installed this way? Are there any pitfalls?
This is like Deja vu or something...When iLife06 first came out, I installed everything but iMovie and stuck with iMovie05 for a long time cause of all the bugs and how long it took to get the third party plugins working...

Of all the things for people to moan about with iMovie '08, the real unfortunate thing is it's inability to import effects, etc. (essentially your completed movie) from iMovie HD. One could somewhat forgive Apple for this debacle, if only it played nice with iMovie HD. Then it could be everything it's supporters say it is, i.e. "a different app," "a simple app for simpletons in a hurry" (although I find it's lack of tools and compatibility issues more difficult to manage).
...and a lot of us feel like this is the thing we're going to be stuck with going forward.
I keep thinking that something else is going to happen, because this can't be right. I think this diver/video engineer who came up with this concept is suffering from the bends.
Apple doesn't need the money, (as in making us buy Final Cut Pro for decent video editing), trust me, so I don't understand why it would take the PR hit.
iMovie '08 spoofs are already on YouTube, etc.

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:

I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

    Turn off Voice Control.
Otherwise, basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

  • Toshiba USB Sleep and Charge causes s3 wake issues

    Toshiba Satellite P500-ST6844
    PSPGSU-0Q2012
    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
I have posted before about an issue with my laptop not waking from sleep properly, (see here)
    basically my problem is this:
I put the laptop to sleep and everything appears to go normally. but when i go to wake the system up, the Toshiba boot logo is shown, and i have lost my windows session. the system acts like it is cold booting, except for a 30 second pause following the boot logo. Just to be clear, once my windows is up and running again my session is not restored, so my system has not gone into hibernation.  this issue does not affect hibernation mode. Hibernation mode works perfectly. Only taking out the battery and unplugging the machine and then pressing the power button for 30 secs. seems to alleviate the issue. but the issue always seemed to return. after much trial and error, I have narrowed down the cause of the issue. if the Toshiba USB Sleep and charge feature is used, the sleep problem is triggered, even if the sleep and charge port is not being used. This issue occurs even in a clean state (clean from a factory restore using restore media). this sleep issue has been occurring since i bought the laptop in 2010, but it has been only in the last 2-3 months that i have been able to narrow down the exact trigger for the issue.
I have updated to the latest version of the sleep and charge app for my laptop, but this does not seem to help any. the issue does not seem to be triggered by just activating or deactivating the USB sleep and charge feature in bios, but using/configuring the sleep and charge feature using the Toshiba application in windows, does.
I don't know if this is indicative of a bios, software, utility, hardware, or power supply issue. I am hoping some one here might have an answer for me, or at least point me in the right direction on where i can go from here.

this behavior even occurs in a "factory fresh state" - (restored from OS recovery media). In that state, only toshiba stuff is installed..
Sounds like you found a bug.
    -Jerry
