SSD slow bootup time
Hi,
So I installed a Samsung 830 512gb ssd onto my Macbook Pro. From what I've seen the bootup time should be about 15-20 seconds. However, mine is about 40-45 seconds and I'm not sure why. I cloned my orginal hd onto my SSD, could that be the reason? Thoughts?
Thanks.
Just fixed it:
The fix is to go into System Preferences >> Startup Disk and select your new solid-state drive. This prevents a 30-second timeout before the boot starts.

Bootup time is now 13 seconds! Sweet.

Slow bootup time with new installed SSD
Hi
Installed a Samsung SSD 830 256GB into my MBP 15" after duplicating the hard drive via disk utility. But bootup times has nearly doubled from 35 seconds of the old HDD to 63 seconds with the new SSD when it's supposed to be the other way round! Applications do startup and run very fast though. Tried repairing my permissions but that hasnt helped. Any help or suggestions? Thanks!richee wrote:

Go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select the SSD. -
How do I ammend slow bootup time on my Macbook Pro??
My comp takes 3-5 mins to boot up. I want to know how i can speed up boot up time?
The cause of slow bootup could be any number of things. Maybe your hard drive failing? Maybe the hard drive is full? Maybe the directory structure is messed up? Who really knows?
quickest method to fix...backup your files, erase the drive and reinstall the OS. -
I don't know why but my macbook pro's bootup time is very long, usually taking approximately two minutes to get to my desktop. It usually takes 30-40 seconds before the apple logo pops up when I start up the computer. I only have six login items (growl, logitech for mouse, itunes, caffeine, quicksilver, istat menus) but after the long bootup everything else is fine. As shown I'm running 10.5.6 and I've already clean installed once in the beginning, about one year ago, when I got the macbook pro brand new. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi,
How much free drive space is there?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data. Not enough available drive space can cause the slow boot you are experiencing.
Check your boot disk for errors and repair if necessary.
Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
If you don't use a disk utility for maintenance, you can force background maintenance tasks...
go here:
Six login items is a tad more than usual. You might one to try deleting at least one app from login items in System Preferences/Accounts and see if that makes a difference.

X220 with Intel 310 ssd slow boot times
I recently bought an x220 i5-2520 and installed an intel 310 80GB ssd.
I cloned C: using the intel Acronis tools, updated all drivers and firmware and all works well.
However, my boot times are over 1 minute - much less than the 20-40 seconds I see posted on the web.
I have cleaned out a lot of unnecessary items from startup using msconfig, but no major difference.
It seems to me that most of the slowdown is happening after the login. It takes around 30 seconds after that to get to the desktop.
Why are my boots 2-3x slower than others?Hi,
I'm running a slightly different configuration, with bios at 1.21, the I7 processor, the Intel 310 ssd and a samsung SSD in the primary drive. I generally average about 20 seconds to ready for input after inputting the HD & Windows password.
I did create the "Recovery" CD/DVD set and installed to the Intel 310 using the Recovery disks without any problem. My boot time included the standard Lenovo/ThinkPad software and usually that doesn't cause much delay.
My other software is iTunes, Office 2010, Picasa, Adobe PhotoShop, and VMWare (my real work). Even the virutal system run quit quickly.
What SW are you running?
I did a couple of tests with 320GB original HD, and boot time was only 2-3 seconds more.

Optical Drive/s eject on startup - SSD Slow Boot time also
Hi guys,
Been researching this problem over and over with no avail.
I have installed a 240GB OWC 6GB SSD in this machine:
Mac Pro MID 2010
32 GB RAM
240 SSD
3 x 1T 7200 RPM Drives (bays 2 - 4)
8-Core 2.4
DVD Super drive
LG BluRay Drive
Sonnet USB 3.0 Card - (Nothing plugged in)
Black Magic Intensity Pro - (Nothing plugged in)
Stock Graphics Card
USB Keyboard (mac)
Trackpad
Wacom Bamboo Tablet
Software:
FCPX / Motion
Adobe Suite
Lion 10.7.3 FRESH / CLEAN
I have done a fresh install of lion 10.7.3!
I have selected my SSD as started up disk
I have reset the PRAM
I have reset SMC
I have no apps running at startup
I have trashed the prefs
I have run disk utility and repair permisions on the SSD boot Drive
I have let Onyx do its thing with cleanup etc.
When I boot, the white screen appears for upto 30sec - 1.5mins, once I see the apple logo, it takes about 10sec to give me desktop and all is good. Everything is lightning fast, and I couldn't imagine my machince lacking performance in any way besides boot time. Shutdown is approx 2 seconds.
It appears that it waits for other possible boot drives, then gives up and boots from the SSD.
Sometimes my optical drives open during white screen on boot???
Any suggestions to solve this?
ThanksMe brain-storming & thinking out loud about how I would go about troubleshoot this:
Every time you zap pram you need to reset the default boot volume.
I never use Onyx after looking at it and keeping it around for awhile, I have mixed idea that people are looking for a problem to fix and do I trust it? gets mentioned enough.
LG BR - can you take that out of the picture to test with it not connected?
Wacom Tablet - take it out of the equation for testing
USB3 - CallDigit? that has USB3 + SATA and looks and sounds good.
Try w/o it also.
Just because there is nothing connected - I've seen a cable that just by being plugged in was the cause of slow boot.
Clone the OS to SSD? sounds like you didn't do that which in the past has had mixed results (sometimes with bad consequences and hard to know why, too many variables) but a clean install should be perfect. One person's though took "ages" to do what should have been very quick.
I assume you would also clone the SSD to backup as image or to another drive.
How does it boot from a 300GB partition off a platter?
3 x 1TB: are these an array? do any of them have a system on it? sounds like you don'[t as it might otherwise choose non-SSD boot drive.
An SSD from restart sometimes is fast(er) but from cold boot the system may not know it is there and how to send a signal to it?
What does OWC say? about SSD, about the USB3 card.
Even having 32GB RAM can take longer to POST. -
Slow Boot Times after installing new SSD and Lion
Can anyone please help interpret why I'm having slow boot times? I have copied my console printout during the boot and it seems to be doing a repetitive action while booting.
Thanks

I replaced my old hard drive with an SSD, and I'm getting boot times much slower than expected, between 40 and 45 seconds. I have already set my SSD as the startup disk in System Preferences, repaired disk permissions, performed a PRAM reset, and turned on TRIM. Application launching and shut down are extremely fast, so I'm not sure why I'm getting such slow boot times.
I'm running a Macbook Pro 15", early 2011, 2 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB RAM. My 256GB SSD still has 160 GB available.Could it be related to the fact that the SSD is listed as disk two in the EtreCheck report?

Very slow bootup for windows 7 home premium on x200
hi i had recently bought the windows 7 home premium upgrade for my x200 with ocz vertex ssd. x200 model : 7459 p57. since i have install the os, i got a very slow bootup at the welcome page. anyone facing the issue or any solution? previously using the windows 7 rc edition with the ssd, there's no issue. can anyone help me?
You can probably simply download all the Windows 7 versions from the Lenovo Web site. Win 7 by itself will install enough to get you running for the most part.

Hi,
Recently I installed a MSI Max2 Motherboard/P4 1.8Ghz with Maxtor 7200rpm ATA133 harddisk and Windows98.
The bootup to Windows98 is very slow. The Windows98 startup screen will stay for at least 30s before going to the desktop. What could be the reason?
Also how come the ratio settings on the bios is displayed as "Locked" and I could not change the ratio settings.
Pls help. Thanks.Quote

Your problem is probobly that you need to assign a manual IP to the NIC in order to prevent the IP being negoshiated each time.
control panel->network
find the component TCP/IP->intel Pro 10/100 (or whatever the NIC is showing up as).
Choose in the proporties to assign a manual IP such as 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 (for example).
Thanks! I did what you advise to add in a dummy IP address. It does improve the bootup time but still slower compare to my previous system. By the way it took 1min 15sec from bootup to Windows Desktop. Slow right?
Could it be the IDE cable, I mean is there such a cable call ATA133 or ATA133 uses the same standard IDE cable? :O -
Bootup time for 2012 MBP?
Needs some help in deciding whether to upgrade to SSD or not.
I know for a fact SSD will speed up bootup time incredibly. How much difference in bootup time we are talking about here?
My friend recently got a MBP (5400rpm HD) running Mountain Lion and the bootup from the time powerup to the time the login screen comes up is like close to 55 seconds. Are we talking about at least half the time with SSD?
Thanks.I have never actually clocked my boot up time for my SSD in a while, if I remember correctly though it was about 15 seconds. The reason is there is no spinning disks to spin up and then find all the information on. SSDs are more like ram. The computer is directed to where the information is and it has it. I am very happy with my SSD, not only a fast boot up, but programs and files open quickly. Also read and write speeds can so much as tripple, so duplicating, and moving files is also faster, and OCZ has a 5 year warranty on there SSDs. I like the fact that storage bays in all MacBook Pros 2011 and newer are user upgradable. That means if you are savy enough, you can put it in yourself without voididng the warranty, and when you buy a new mac in 6 years or so, you can transfer it if you would like. Check out OCZ here! The Vertex 4 has a write speed of 560 MB/s, mine is about 550Mb/s.

Slow boot time (Video included)
It takes 44 seconds from first hitting the power button to my desktop appearing, it's not until around 22 seconds that anything even appears on my screen and the POST process starts so I don't think this is Windows related etc? I have tried with and without RAPID mode on my SSD and strangely it's actually 2secs quicker with RAPID OFF, either way 44 seconds is extremely slow for Windows 8 on an SSD?!
Worth noting that I had the exact same slow boot times while on my previous non EVO SSD and Windows 7 on this exact PC, have now just updated to Windows 8.1 on a brand new SSD but still have slow boot so guessing its something BIOS or MOBO related?
I've posted a video in the hope that maybe the LED indicator on the mobo might help someone point me in the right direction?

I will of course unplug all but the mouse and keyboard and time it again, but I do think I've already tried that in the past.Quote from: RipGroove on 30-December-13, 20:46:21

My system takes ~15 secs from Power button to desktop display (I'm booting from a somewhat slow Seagate Sata 2 320GB drive)--of course stuff is still loading at this point in the background. My Windows 8.1 Start up-sequence boot timer says ~12 secs--but I don't think that is right and think it's cheating a wee bit... Anyway, just looking at this stuff here's what stands out to me:
*You don't need the CD/DVD device ahead of your Windows boot drive in the boot order. I only do that when I specifically have to boot from DVD for some reason, which isn't that often. By knocking back the DVD drive in the boot order it shaves maybe a couple of secs since there's no check for bootable DVD disk done before the boot is handed off to your really fast boot drive--and hey, if you *do* have a DVD disk just sitting in there that you don't want to boot from (this is my situation far more than I need to boot from the DVD drive)--that can take a couple more seconds, I think. Where it really costs you boot time is when you have a bootable disk in the DVD drive that you don't want to boot from... The "....hit any key to boot from DVD" will maybe 8-10 seconds to your boot. Best policy: Don't put the DVD drive first in the boot order. This one is minor, though, compared to the next one:
*Your list of start-up programs is roughly 3x longer than mine... I can see there are several programs running in your boot sequence that are entirely unnecessary in getting your machine up and properly booted--and every one of those unnecessary proggy's takes time to load through--during the boot process. Most of those programs will easily run after boot when you need them to run--they just don't need to be run at boot-up. Try disabling a bunch of them selectively until you get the reduction in boot time you're looking for. I just checked my boot sequence in the 8.1 task manager...I have 11 programs in the sequence BUT...8 (eight) of them are disabled...! They have nothing material to do with my boot so why should I let them clog up the boot process? I think you can make big time gains there. Another waste of boot time is stuff like QT task--you can update manually whenever you want after you boot--doesn't need to clog up the boot process, imo. You'll be surprised by how much you can excise from that program list without noticing it except in faster boots. (I don't run MSI fast boot, either.)
You are certainly right, though--your boot shouldn't be taking nearly so long. Fortunately, it appears there's a lot your can do about it..! Oh, yea--take AVG and shove it through the nearest window... Be kind to yourself. In 8.1, Defender is more powerful than MSE in 7 and Vista and XP, and MSE is not only great at protection, it also has a very light footprint and is the very antithesis of AVG in terms of being the sort of invasive, layered, resource hog that AVG is (at least, in my experience.) He who travels light travels best, etc... -
Hi,
I have installed Leopard since it came out in October. After installing it, I performed disk utility task to repair permission. I found that, the bootup time is longer (from the time I press the power button until the desktop screen) compared to Tiger. Does anyone have this problem? Is there anyway we can speed it up?
STanOften resetting the PRAM will help slow boots.

If that doesn't help there are more suggestions in this article.

Hello! I re-installed arch linux on my computer using the Beginners Guide from the wiki. But now when I use the computer i turns slow over time, I'm talking if I leave it on for 3 hours+. By slow I mean that I am typing this sentence, and I'm expecting to see it 3 seconds after pressing the ".". It's fine when I reboot, running blazingly fast but after that 3 hour mark, happens no matter what I use to computer for. It's weird as the first time I installed arch this didn't happen, after having searched high and low on Google I have no re-installed the OS three times (every time with the same problem). I would love to add some files explaining the problem, but I really have no idea where to even begin looking, so I'll just list some specs.
I'm running:
Gnome
64 bit arch, not using testing or unstable
Normal use would be cmus, libre office and chromium running.
Hardware wise everything should be OK, when in windows I'm running battlefield 3 and other hardware hungry games without problems, also the same problem does not happen in windows. Let it be noted that Windows is on a harddrive, and arch is on a SSD drive (120 GB Kingston HyperX)
I have checked my hostname, rc.conf etc and they all seem to be OK, any suggestions?Hello! The problem is still persistent, I've just "lived with" ubuntu for some time as I've had my exam period + two new jobs so there has not been time.
It is a desktop, with rather powerful hardware (running most modern games on full without problems)
I did check /etc/hosts and it matched with /etc/rc.conf.
Again it's blazing after a reboot, but a few hours on (like now) it's very, very slow. even typing text is laggy.

Since last time I posted I have re-installed arch, re-installing did not change any thing.
Hardware:
Intel i5 2500k
Nvidia GeForce 5600 (with the nvidia + nvidia-utils driver)
ASUS P8Z68-V motherboard
Windows and Ubuntu is both running fine, but really, I'd much prefer using arch.
again, thank you for all replies : )
I run "pacman -Syu" every day. -
I just updated my RAM (replaced the two 2 gig cards with two Corsair 8 gig cards) and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times with Photoshop and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.

The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.
