SSD unmounts randomly
Hi all,
I have an issue for the past 1 month.
I bought the samsung ssd 840 evo 1 month ago and i did i copyied (throught the Time Machine) the current hdd to the ssd. For the first boot i had some strange problems with some programs that i fixed in the way. The only problem that i cannot find a solution is that the SSD randomly unmounts. This is hypothetical because when that is happening the skype is closed with an error telling me of an "I/O error", i cannot open folders, save work, chrome cannot open tabs etc.
The only way to bypass it was to hold the power button and hard restart the system.
So that lead to a completly crash after a month and 3 days ago i did a complete format and reinstallation of the system without using any restore point from Time Machine to be sure. I run hardware test to the whole system and everything looked perfect for 1 day.
Today i have exactly the same behaviour without knowing what else to do. I've searched all over the internet without any luck. My only solution left is to return the SSD to the vendor but they can check it and see that the hardware tests say that the SSD is perfect.
Any suggestions about the problem ?
My macbook specifications:
Macbook Pro 13'' 2011
OS: OSX 10.9.3 (Maverick)
Processor: 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3
So to update what I've done since my last update,
I decided to eliminate that SSD, I have 3 Evo's lying around the place in computers so I swapped one out for the one inside the MBP.
A different Evo had the exact same issue as before with it powering down while in use (I even got a message saying I should eject first), at the time I was using carbon copy to clone from a external HDD which I'd booted from onto the new Evo.
The old one which was originally showing errors in now running in my Windows Desktop with no issues or signs of failure.
Also I've tested both SATA ports, with a HDD Caddy and the power down is present from both ports which rules out the SATA cable.
What I'm left with is no problem with the SATA cable and no issue with the SSD, as I'm currently running off a spare HDD I found and put into the MBP which has no issues so that rules out a problem with power delivery. I'm left with a problem with Compatibility, There was a firmware update late last year which was released after most of the posts have been made about no problems with the Evo, or a Failing controller that can't handle SATA III as all of the drives I've used are SATA II.
On a final note I notice it tends to power down after writing large amounts of data as it turned off most frequently when installing or cloning (After about 20GB). although ran with no issued for 3 hours with general use.

WD MyBook or My Book unmounting randomly
I work for a Mac Support company in NYC, where we setup/teach/troubleshoot for homes or small businesses all over the city. However, I'm stumped by some recent issues with the WD 1TB My Book drives we've been purchasing for clients. In the past, WD has always been a reliable brand, so I'm wondering if anyone else is having these problems, or if someone thinks it might be Leopard related.
Running Leopard on all machines, recently 2 or 3 of the My Book 1TB drives have started unmounting randomly. But of course since Time Machine is supposed to be a "set it and forget it" solution, the client doesn't notice this until we get there (which is about once every couple weeks), and at that point they may have lost a week or more of backups (not a huge deal, but they're still not getting the full convenience and functionality of Time Machine). The drive, however, seems to be "on", and running, though not mounted (and does not show up in Disk Utility). So, to fix this, we simply turn it off and on again, and it shows up fine. Sometimes we have to do more than that, like disconnect it, turn it off, reconnect it, etc. I've had this happen on different machines, all running Leopard, but all with the WD My Book 1TB drive (though different My Book drives). Most of these drives are connected using Firewire 800, but some are using 400.
Unfortunately, after recommending these drives to numerous clients, I've since had to return 2 of them because 1 of them mounted sporadically and for the most part, not at all, and also was very hard to get to stay powered up, and the other one wouldn't turn on at all (lemon, bad power button). Had I had these problems from the outset, I may have recommended other drives. However, now, I'm hoping against hope that it's just Leopard, and not just horribly made drives! Unfortunately, I don't have a Tiger machine at most of the client homes to test it out on.
HOPEFULLY this is not a problem with the drives, which I have read only good reviews about, but rather is a problem with Leopard, which I assume will be updated in January (10.5.2) with some sort of fix. However, any advice or suggestions others have would be appreciated.
Thanks!
RyanWould the problem possibly be this sleep issue?

I have 2 External Hard Drives...one is a 180gb FW Lacie about 2 years old, and the second is a 500gb FW Fantom Drives about 3 months old.
I upgraded to Leopard about a month ago and ever since, both HDs are randomly un-mounting from the desktop with the "(!)Device Removal" dialog coming up. I've searched other forums and haven't come up with any good answers. I haven't lost any data, and the hard drives seem to stay mounted while I'm reading/writing to them. But, while they are sitting idle they seem to unmount and then remount minutes later completely spontaneously, without any recognizable pattern. I should mention that both HDs are hooked up through a 20" apple DVI display and then to my Powerbook. I would think maybe that it was the HD if it was only one of them, but it's both.
More than anything it's an annoyance at this point because I haven't lost any data, but I don't want the problem to get any worse and cause me to lose anything.
If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
ScottHow, more precisely, is everything interconnected? For example, is the LaCie Firewired to the display, and the Fantom Firewired to the LaCie?
I'm not on Leopard, so do not know issues there. LaCie power supplies have a poor history. I can conjecture that if the LaCie power goes bad, and the other drive is daisy chained, that both could go offline, until the supply "recovers."
In other words, try removing the LaCie completely. You might also try the drives direct to the Mac, bypassing the display. -
Bootcamp on Thunderbolt SSD freezes randomly
Hi.
I have an iMac late 2012 (27" with GTX680MX - i5)
I installed windows bootcamp on the internal Fusion-drive at first - it worked fine, but the performance was too slow.
So I invested in an external thunderbolt SSD.
After installing Windows 8 on this (leaving a 20 gb partition on the fusion-drive), windows starts up fine.
But after a few updates and installs, it starts to freeze randomly for 30-60 seconds.
I have done two complete re-installs ... same issue.
I updated SSD firmware... same issue.
I have tried to set windows to high performance and PCI-E to not use power safe.... no luck.
Anyone know how to fix this or why it happens? Thanks for your reply.
I thought that since tunderbolt is based on PCI-E it would behave the same way as an internal drive.
The installation is very straight forward via bootcamp, and it runs fine, except for these random issues... which might then be due to windows generally not liking external hookups.
(Yes, I do need a PC as I work with marketing in the gaming industry... and I just needed something that could hang on the wall and still be capable of running games. No current PC manufacture does this well)
PS! I am posting this from the win boot. -
External SSD disconnects randomly
I have a new MacBook Pro Retina 13". Because storage space is limited, I'm using a Samsung SSD as an external drive. This drive is in a USB 3.0 a case from OWC. The Aperture library I'm working from lives on that drive, so it needs to be a reliable connection.
The problem: When I step away long enough for the screen to go blank, I wake it up to find that the external drive has been disconnected. I see an error message admonishing me to eject disks properly. I cannot re-mount the disk by any means except to log out/back in. Logging out takes ages, so that I generally have to shut the computer down by holding the power key. It mounts up just fine when I re-boot or log back in.
Computer is plugged in
Energy Saver settings are set to allow system sleep after ten minutes or so, and to put hard disks to sleep when possible
Console log is jammed full of info around this timeframe, but i don't see anything relevant (maybe i'm not interpreting it correctly)
Any thoughts?same/similar problem with a Dell monitor
Aug 2010 Macbook Pro
For some reason it worked for a while (though often I had to restart) and now it is not working at all - external monitor is black & flashes the desktop every minute or so.

Intel Z68 Sandy Bridge chipset and SSD caching....
For those of us considering a move to the Sandy Bridge/Z68 platform, we will eventually need to sort out whether to take advantage of the chipset's ability to "improve" ONE hard drive with a smallish (64GB or less) SSD.
Results I have seen indicate read speeds considerably slower than an SSD drive alone but acceptably improved performance over a bare hard drive. It seems like a promising situation. Capacity of a TB hard drive with read speeds nicely bumped upwards.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/z68-express-lucidlogix-virtu-ssd-caching,2888.html
Question: If a user followed Harm's and other's suggestions in setting up a basic 3- or 4-drive computer, which drive should take the cheapo SSD?
Thoughts:
1) Assume the Z68 platform is loaded with all 16GB of memory that the four-slot Socket 1155 motherboard can typically accept. Would CS5 or 5.5 load enough program data into RAM to render placing the SSD on the OS drive for editing with Premiere minimally beneficial? Or would it simply make sense to put the SSD on the OS drive for so many other reasons that it's a no-brainer?
2) If it's a close call, which other drive should get the SSD? If I understand correctly, this hybrid drive won't write data all that much better. The improvement will primarily be on reads. And on that, random access reads, not sustained throughput. This is especially the case with cheaper 40GB-ish SSD's. (Some one please verify this.) Most Sandy Bridge users opting for the lower end, 20 PCI-e lanes platform won't be big-time power users. (You guys are waiting for the Socket 2011 platform.) Many of us will be getting our footage from DSLR or other AVCHD sources. AVCHD is so compressed that a single drive can supply more than enough layers for the Joe Blow amateur editor.
Unless we use Cineform NeoScene to lighten the load on the CPU, which will result in a much larger bitstream coming off the media drive for each layer, Would it make sense to help out a single drive in this situation? Or would it be universally better to set up a simple 2-disk RAID 0? Paying $65 for second drive and taking advantage of motherboard RAID 0 would seem to be a better solution if the media drive can't keep up.
For any situation, if the media drive(s) is already fast enough, would caching the media drive offer many benefits? I'm under the impression that feeding Premiere with footage is a sequential read situation, not a random access deal. Isn't the strength of an SSD in random access reads, and wouldn't the best usage be to place it on a disk that primarily is used by Premiere in random access data fetching?
3) Good grief. If it doesn't go on the OS or primary media drive supplying footage, where else? Projects disk? Scratch drive?
4) Might the most useful thing be to avoid setting up a RAID while getting some of the speed benefits a RAID 0 offers? Many casual users can build a straightforward computer but have never set up a RAID array, even a 2-disk RAID 0.
40GB SSD's are under $100 now. I suspect a lot of people will use this feature of the Z68, if the hybrid drive isn't hard to set up and is reliable. I'm curious how the Premiere crowd will make use of this feature, and will it make a palpable difference on a relatively simple editing rig? No Areca RAID cards and only 16GB memory. Nothing more than 3 or 4 single drives.Frankly I don't see how an inexpensive SSD would help the "caching" for editing with Premiere CS5, since a typical 7200 rpm 1TB drive can perform substained writes at about 2x what a typical small SSD does.
Premiere CS5 continues to beg for lots of drives!

Best practice: 1.8 inch msata ssd to use as system disk?
Can I use a msata 1,8 inch ssd as a systendisk in the Y500 ? and wil it be faster dan the HDD ?If yes, I doubt using the Kingstone KC380 240 GB or the 120 GB. I need 70 to 80 GB for the OS all my programs, filesys etc. . So both will do, but is both are good I buy some reserve capacity. Only the disavantage of the 240 is that it has random reading :21.000 IOPS ?? and the 120 GB : 54.000 IOPS. (the sequential readin and writing is for both 520MBpS).is this random reading speed difference relevant for what I want? are there other reasons to prefer one to the other ?Thanks for informing me, I have no clou. Iris
It will definitely be much faster than the normal HDD you have. The sequential read/write is usually noticed when moving large files from/to the SSD. Random reading speed is basically how many operations are done in random 4KB files around the disk, and is a measure of fast you'd move pictures, for example. A big folder with lots of small pictures will take longer. 21,000 is a low number when speaking of regular SATA-3 SSDs, but I'm not so sure if its a normal number speaking of m.SATA.

I have a new Mac Pro (2014) with latest updates. Any time I use my SSD it randomly restarts itself. Could be doiing anythign as simple as transfering one file or something like multi-track recording audio. The drive is Kingston SSDNOW KC300. (SSD is formated OS Extended) I am using a Apricorn SSD to USB adapter.
Here is the report from the last time it crashed.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Automator crashes in OS 10.6.8
Running OS 10.6.8 on my late 2006, 13 in macbook2,1. Last few weeks have had multiple applications crash unexpectedly. Have verified and repaired disk permissions numerous times, verified hard drive a few times too. Took macbook to Genius Bar where they said may be because of RAM hungry applications but when they tested it said something wrong with the hard drive. Initially they talked about needing a new hard drive, then they decided to erase the HD and re-install the OS and I used Time Machine to restore applications and documents. I still had the same problems. Thinking some conflict with some application, I deleted the HD, re-installed the OS once again and this time did not restore from Time Machine. Same problem.
Finally decided to go for the SSD that I have had my eye on for a long time. Replaced the HD with the SSD and wow, amazed with the rate apps open. However today which two days after installed new SSD, other random apps and Automator crashes unexpectedly. the 32 bit box in the information panel for Automator was unchecked. I have tried it with it checked and still no help.
In the last 5 years I have never had any trouble with my macbook until now. All updates current. All firmware upto date.
Below is the crash report and any help will be gratefully received. As can be seen from the report have already suffered 32 crashes in the last two days with new HD.
Thank you.

My brand new Maxtor 1TB drive kept dropping the connection during large TM sessions. The fix (so far) for me was to update to 10.5.6. The combination of TM and Carbon Copy Cloner is awesome. Has anyone else has FW conection problems with the Maxtor 1TB drive? (no push button)
I am having the same problem with Western Digital MyBook (1TB). But only if Time Machine is active. The drive will unmount randomly.

I have a 20" iMac G5 (ambient light sensor), iPod 5th Gen, iPod 3rd Gen and iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen.
My question is, how many iPods can I have plugged in AND mounted AND in their docks charging?
I've noticed that I used to be able to have both the 3rd gen and 5th gen mounted at the same time... however, now that I have the shuffle, as soon as a 3rd iPod gets plugged in, one of the other two will unmount (randomly out of the 3).
This is kind of annoying as I like to have all of them charging. The unmounted one seems to not charge when this happens. Is this an issue with the iMac or simply a limit in the OS or iPods or iTunes? It's more of a convenience factor than anything... To be able to plug into their docks and sink and not worry about if one is not synced, then that is ideal (I do a sync just before leaving my computer so that calendars et al get updated).... but if the only way to do it is one at a time, then I guess I have no other choice. A small price to pay I guess for the great devices

Issue with HP QuickDock 2.0 on HP DV7 running Windows 7 - Randomly Mounting/Unmounting
Greetings!
I recently purchased an HP QuickDock 2.0, because I have two external harddrives, a USB charger for my phone, and a printer attached to my laptop just about all the time.
The dock works great usually, but several times a day, it will randomly unmount and mount itself, which in turn causes my hard drives to do the same (not good - I have experienced some data loss as a result). I've tried updating drivers, searching high and low on support forums, uninstalling in Device Manager and letting it reinstall, etc. No success yet.
The only thing that looks fishy in the device manager is a yellow caution triangle beside "WD SES Device USB Device" under "other devices." For whatever, reason, it isn't finding a device driver for one of my externals now that the dock has been installed (was not like that before). I've tried to uninstall the device and let it try to find the driver again. No luck. Odd thing is, both of my harddrives still function perfectly, even though one apparently does not have a driver. The WD SES problem did not exist prior to installing the dock.
I've downloaded and installed these drivers (http://cid-cafafbf93acdb073.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Drivers/HP%5E_USB2%5E_docking%5E_stati...). No change.
I'm not sure what else to try. Any suggestions? This is definitely from malware - it happened to me last night and I checked online and found 2 many guesses. I managed to resolve it moments ago - and I'm typing with the same computer / keyboard. It is hard to resolve but here is the link to the virus description (which does not mention the specific symptom of losing the 2 W S X keys). I lost the function immediately, and suspected malware right away: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/threat/encyclopedia/entry.aspx?name=TrojanDownloader%3aJava...
So this is how I solved it: I had Microsoft Security Essentials and it was up-to-date. However, it does not find it by itself. Spybot finds something but is unable to fix it - even upon a reboot. I installed Trend free atHome(?) virus scan - it does not find it. I installed AVG full Internet Protection - it does not find it. However, while AVG was running (a few hours) Security Essential found it - just like that! So, it appears that when the malware was adjusting itself to avoid being detected, that it was discovered by MS Security Essentials. I fixed it while AVG was running, and tested my keyboard right away. At first the x worked, then the other keys.
This is malware - not hardware, so please stop telling people to clean or replace their keyboards. -
2nd ssd can't unmount or write after update
I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro i7. Intel chipset is series 5 it says.
I bought a new intel ssd that I put into the main drive bay, and then I put the Apple/Intel SSD drive that I had in previously into the Optical bay.
The drive is fully readable but no write operations are permitted.
I have checked permissions, and it is totally fine, read/write for everyone even (777) and yet I cannot copy files, rename files, delete files or create files on the drive. I cannot unmount the drive with disk utilities either.
If i boot up into the Lion recovery image I have the same issue, the dive still won't get any love.
I noticed when I look at 'about this mac -> storage" the main bay drive is listed as "Solid State SATA" but the 2nd drive is listed as "Flash Storage".
I am pretty confident this worked totally fine when I had Snow Leopard installed, but after update it stopped working.
Pulling my hair out I have since formatted both drives (by removing and connecting via USB) and installed a clean version of Lion on the may bay drive, and simply have formatted the 2nd drive as Journaled HSF+
===
My theory at this point is that Lion has updated some drivers that no longer work against the optical bay + ssd, or Lion has added a built in restriction to prevent 2 SSD SATA connections for some reason.
I have tried swapping the drives and when I do, whichever drive is in the optical bay has the same issues.
Any ideas. There are a few other people on different boards that have this same issue, so I'd love to pass along any solution I find.
Thanks in advance!Make type brand model? that might help.

GRAID 3 (external hard) randomly unmounts
I have just purchased a GRAID 3 external HD and for large project, but am quite surprised at its random unmounts. Happens quite frequently actually. Tried all that crossed my mid, but no answer. Is it sort of a normal behavior or am I missing something. I connected it via Fire Wire 800. would esata adapter help? Any advice?
Also I searched the forums about it and came up with a problem people keep talking about, and it's about Time Machine. People keep complaining about TM destroying their external hard drives, here's the link - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1215979&tstart=30 , and considering the date of the topic I may have (being a new MAC user) missed some solution to the problem. I'm bringing this up only in reference to my own problem, could TM be the cause of the random unmounts, considering I used GRAID to be my TM disk? I have turned TM off for the time being, please advise whether the problem has been fixed.
Furthermore, people also complain about FireWire drivers being less then satisfactory to say the least, corrupting HD's as well, here are two links on the subject -
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5694554
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1220884&tstart=0
I'm bringing it up also in relation to my own problem. Is the problem a faulty FireWire connection, should I revert to eSata or USB to connect GRAID?
Noteworthy - after changing the Time Machine update drive selection to "none" the unmountings have stopped so far (about an hour or so, will confirm after further testing), but in Final Cut Pro the error " autosave scratch disk drive cannot be found " appears every five minutes, but when I go to the system settings the drive is there as if I have already selected it.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance.Start with http://www.videomaker.com/article/14042/ and note that it's probably not worth the expense unless the machine has an eSATA port, which I don't see WRT Mac Pro specs.

Random music disappears when ipod is unmounted. help.
i have music on my ipod that is only accesable when it is attached to my computer. when i unmount the ipod the music doesn't appear in any of the menus. plug it back in to the computer and its there and can be played through i-tunes. i've installed the current update and tried a reset. it seems like a bug involving the table of contents or something.
have you heard of this or do you know what i can try to get my ipod to list and make availabe all the music currently stored on it?i always eject my ipod and any other drive before i disconnect it.
i also shut down my computer before i do something like remove the battery.
i'm an audio engineer and i know how to use a mac and the drives i have connected to it.
the problem with my i pod seems to be with the software on it. it has the mp3's stored on it. i can locater them through various apps on my computer. they just don't appear in any menu (artist, album, genre, etc.) when the ipod is not connected to the computer. when it is connected they are available to be played from the itunes interface. i click on my ipods music menu and they are there and i can play them. this alone indicates that the files are not corrupted, have an identifiable script for their name, are organized properly by artsit, album, and so on. but after i eject the ipod they can't be accessed through the menus. like the menus on the ipod need to be updated so that they contain a path to the music on the ipod. and to be clear this is only random files. most of my music appears in the menus.
as a side note, my wife has an identical ipod and all the music on mine was also put onto hers on the same day. these files can be accessed on hers when it is not connected to the computer, once again indicating that the files are fine and that the problem is with my ipod alone.
